Links: Odds and Ends…

by Lang Whitaker

Yo. Tuesday, and I’m exhausted from the Hawaii trip. I left Honolulu at noon on Friday and walked through my door at home in New York at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Flew from Hawaii to San Fran, had a one hour layover there, then went from San Fran to New York on the red-eye. Then I stayed up until about 6:00 a.m. the last few nights, trying to sleep but just not being able to. And last night, for whatever reason, the cable and the internet was on the blink, so I was forced (forced, I tell you!) to play video games all night.

Which reminds me: I wrote a few months ago about how I was thinking of buying a PS3. Well, I bought one. And I love it. And while my Xbox 360 taunts me with the 3RLOD, the PS3 has been a welcome addition to my gaming arsenal. My one complaint is that the thing tends to get really hot and, in turn, really loud when the internal cooling fans kick in. I did some internet research on it, and it seems that being in an enclosed space (my PS3 is in a box in my entertainment center) is a bad thing. I thought about buying a little fan they sell at the game store, but from what I’ve read it’ll just blow the hot air around. So I guess I might have to cut a hole in the back of the entertainment console in order to let air circulate through there. That’s going to look really classy.

I’m trying to catch up on a few things this week, because I was out of the office all week last week and am basically going to be gone all week next week, too. So these Links are more of a cursory effort than anything else. Much like a rainbow after a storm, today’s links are symbolic of my promise to write at least a little something every day.

• A big shout-out goes to Barack Obama and his campaign. Two weeks ago I put it out there that Obama’s people had been spectacularly unhelpful to us thus far in our attempts to get an interview. I don’t want to jinx anything just yet, but it’s safe to say that they’re not being unhelpful anymore.

• I assume you saw yesterday’s post with the new SLAM cover and the KG notes. That was such a fun interview that I’ve been biting my tongue the last month not to spill the beans about it. Linkstigator and SLAM contributor Chris O’Leary asked if we could get him a big version of one of those KG pictures that he could use as a desktop pattern, and that reminded me of when we used to do desktop patterns from each issue.

Let’s hope this works…

• For Sam and the rest of you nerds who watch Heroes and probably watched Star Wars while dressed like characters from the movie, here’s a cool video of a bunch of nerds who built a huge X-Wing fighter and tried to launch it into space, with bad results. And if you’re into Star Wars, this is pretty funny…

• Continuing our look at foods that are gross, how about Hardee’s new “Country Breakfast Burrito”? (Which country is it, exactly?) According to the article, it has…

Two egg omelets filled with bacon, sausage, diced ham, cheddar cheese, hash browns and sausage gravy, all wrapped inside a flour tortilla. The burrito contains 920 calories and 60 grams of fat.

Amazing. Two omelets! And I love that it has all that stuff in it, plus the sausage gravy. Also, it has hash browns in it, or you can get it as a meal with hash browns in it.

As their marketing guy says, “We don’t try to hide what these are. When consumers go to other fast-food places they feel like they’ve got to buy two of their breakfast sandwiches or burritos to fill up. This is really designed to fill you up.”

Or, you know, kill you.

They should definitely sign Eddy Curry to endorse it.
