Michael Jordan: Air Jordans are ‘Much Bigger Than Michael Jordan’

For younger sneakerheads, Michael Jordan is mostly known as the logo on their crispy kicks and that guy flying around in grainy YouTube footage.

MJ can’t figure out what’s behind the relentless mania associated with the shoes bearing his name.

Jordan, the greatest basketball player in history, thinks that his sneaker legacy will eventually supplant what he did on the court.

Per USA Today:

“I can’t explain it and no one can explain it,” Jordan said. “And if anybody could explain it or duplicate it, they would have done it by now.”

Various versions of the original 1985 Nike Air Jordan are listed on eBay for up to $7,500, not including shipping. But Jordan said he’s struck most when he sees kids too young to have watched him play basketball wearing Air Jordans.

“That’s amazing,” he said. “To me, it’s much bigger than Michael Jordan. It’s going to outlive me in terms of what I did for the game of basketball. It’s going to be something that’s going to last for a while.”
