Dirk Nowitzki: Steve Nash Overcame a Lot in His Career, Like ‘Being Short and White and Slow’

Following Steve Nash’s official retirement from the NBA over the weekend, there’s been an outpouring of kind words from former teammates, coaches, opponents and admirers. Clearly, throughout his legendary career, Nash made an impact on everyone who was anywhere near him on a basketball court.

None more than one of his best friends in the League, Mavericks big man Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk didn’t let a chance to rib his buddy pass though, joking during a radio interview that Nash’s career was so impressive because he was short, white, slow and unathletic.

The full quote is actually: “He overcame a lot in his career – his health and being short and white and slow and unathletic. And to be one of the greatest ever is an unbelievable achievement.”

You can hear the audio of Dirk saying all that and more via ESPN Radio here.
