Denver is understandably eager to lock up its franchise player, and Melo would like to extend his contract before the new Collective Bargaining Agreement goes into effect in 2011: “Since Anthony, who turns 26 later this month, isn’t a free agent this summer, he is free to discuss an extension with his team prior to the opening of the negotiating period July 1. The Nuggets, fully aware that Anthony would be in high demand in 2011 among teams that strike out in their pursuit of James, Dwyane Wade and other marquee free agents this summer, are hopeful that this will be the first step toward ‘making Melo a Nugget for a long time,’ one of the people familiar with the team’s strategy said.”
