Cavs Sign Coach Tyronn Lue to Five-Year, $35 Million Extension

The Cleveland Cavaliers and head coach Tyronn Lue have come to terms on a five-year, $35 million contract extension according to multiple published reports.

Lue took over last season for David Blatt, and helped lead the Cavs to their first NBA title in franchise history.

The new deal’s first four years are fully-guaranteed; the fifth year is a team option.

Per the NEOMG:

The Cavaliers and Lue had begun negotiations soon after the NBA Finals. Sides were optimistic a deal would be completed before Summer League. However, it dragged out into late July.

Due to the delay caused by the negotiations, the contracts of assistants Jim Boylan, Phil Handy, James Posey and Vitaly Potapenko expired July 1. Larry Drew had a team option for the 2016-17 season that was picked up; and Mike Longabardi inked a multiyear deal when he was acquired mid-season.

Lue never signed a head coaching contract when he took over for the fired David Blatt in January. He was working under a four-year, $6.5 million deal as Blatt’s top assistant, and essentially bet on himself by not signing the three-year, $9.5 million deal originally etched out by the team and his representatives.
