Marreese Speights Signing With the Golden State Warriors

by July 09, 2013

Free agent big man Marreese Speights is headed to The Bay — the Golden State Warriors will ink Speights, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, to a multi-year deal. Per ESPN: “Although the financial specifics were not known, sources say Speights received a two-year deal with a team option entering Year 3. The deal won’t be made official until after the league’s annual moratorium on signings and trades is lifted Wednesday. One source close to the process said that the move for Speights does not impact the Warriors’ pursuit of free-agent center Jermaine O’Neal, whose former agent is current Warriors general manager Bob Myers. Speights should help fill the void left by power forward Carl Landry, who agreed to a four-year, $26 million deal with the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. Speights averaged 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in the final 39 games with Cleveland after coming over in a trade from Memphis last season. He will likely come off the bench for the Warriors at both power forward and center. The 25-year-old Speights was drafted 16th overall out of Florida by Philadelphia in 2008. He has averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in his first five NBA seasons.”
