Team USA Invites Kyrie Irving, Tyler Zeller and Dion Waiters to Minicamp

According to the Plain Dealer, a trio of Cleveland Cavaliers — point guard and current SLAM cover subject Kyrie Irving, shooting guard Dion Waiters and big man Tyler Zeller — have been invited to take part in a mini camp this summer by Team USA. (DeMarcus Cousins also got an invite): All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving and Cavaliers teammates Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller have been invited to take part in the USA men’s national team mini-camp in Las Vegas from July 22-25, sources said. Tristan Thompson will take part in the Canadian equivalent. According to USA Basketball’s chief media/communications officer Craig Miller, this year’s camp is primarily held to identify and evaluate some younger players who could eventually be added to the 2014-16 national team roster from which the 2014 USA World Basketball Cup Team (formerly known as FIBA World Championship) and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team will be chosen. The 2014-16 USA national team roster will include veteran players who were members of the national team program in 2010-12; any older players who have emerged; and younger players selected from the 2013 mini-camp, Miller said.”
