IMG Basketball Training Series: Dribbling

Dribbling

All exercises with 2 balls

Purpose/Benefit: These drills allow the athlete to work on strength and quickness of fast twitch muscle fibers within the fingers, wrists, hands and forearms. It also enhances or creates muscle memory for the many types of dribbling.

1) Windshield Wipers, Broken, Push-Pull

Instructions:

All of these drills are on the cadence of the coach who yells “Wipers, broken, push-pull”

a. Windshield Wipers – In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand bounce the balls back and forth in front of you like windshield wipers.

b. Broken – In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand bounce the balls in towards each other and then out away from each other like broken wipers

c. Push Pull – In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand bounce them back and forth and from front to back

2) Ball Crossover and Behind Back

Instructions:

a. In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand, pound the balls to the ground twice and then cross the balls over to the opposite hand. Repeat 15 times.

2.a

b. In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand, pound the balls to the ground twice and then swing one behind your back while crossing the other ball over to the opposite hand. Repeat 15 times.

3) 1 High, 1 Low Dribbling

Instructions:

a. In an athletic stance with a ball in each hand, dribble 1 ball at ankle level while dribbling the opposite ball at waist level or higher.

b. On the coach’s command you will cross the balls over in front of you and then switch which hand is high and which hand is low.
