Nick Young: ‘We Think We Could Make The Playoffs, For Sure’

As part of the NBA’s highest scoring bench unit, Nick Young is experiencing something of a renaissance under Luke Walton. Young, who was rumored to be close to getting waived by the Lakers in the offseason, is averaging 14.7 points per game and is shooting 47.6 percent from the field, 40.3 percent from three and 100 percent from the stripe for the 6-4 Lakers.

Los Angeles finished 17-65 in 2015-16, but the fast start has the players and fans feeling optimistic. After Saturday’s 126-99 win over the Pelicans, Swaggy P was asked if he thought the Lakers could compete for a playoff spot, to which he responded, “we think we could.”

Have the Lakers shown enough to suggest they can compete for a playoff spot?

“We think we could, for sure,” Lakers forward Nick Young said. “If we continue to play how we’ve been playing…..”

Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson then interrupted Young and asked about the subject matter. After Young caught Clarkson up to speed, the two playfully chastised a reporter for bringing up the topic.

“It’s not nice. You put pressure on these young guys,” Young said. “Now we have to make the playoffs when you said [before] we were the last team in the world.”

Point guard D’Angelo Russell was much more brash when asked about the team’s playoff chances, saying the team is “capable” of earning a spot:

“We don’t want to just be a team that has a winning record,” Russell said after Thursday’s win in Sacramento. “It’s not satisfying for us. I know we’re capable of being a playoff team. That’s the main focus.”
