Top 50: Tim Duncan, no. 6

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Russ Bengtson

The best book ever written on the nuts and bolts of writing was originally published in 1919. Called “The Elements of Style,” it focused primarily on usage and composition. It was 43 pages long. Later revised by New Yorker writer E.B. White, who added an introduction and final chapter, Tim Duncanit expanded to 71 pages. But the key piece of advice—one that appeared in the original version and remained unchanged through all the revisions and editions—was a single, short sentence: “Omit needless words.” That’s all. Follow no other directive but that one, and you will become a better writer.

At this point you’re probably asking what a slim, 90-year-old book on writing has to do with Tim Duncan. The answer is everything. Basketball, much like writing, is only as complicated as you make it. The basic rules of both are simple. In writing, it’s ‘tell the story.’ In basketball, it’s ‘score more points than the other team.’ Duncan has understood this since he entered the League, if not since he entered the world.

As a rookie, Duncan averaged 21.1 points and 11.9 rebounds on 55 percent shooting. Last season, he averaged 19.3 points and 10.7 rebounds on 50.4 percent shooting. His career averages are 21.4, 11.7, 50.7 percent. If he’s on any sort of decline, it’s the most gradual of slopes. At 33 years old, Duncan is pretty much the player he’s always been. And if he’s relatively unaffected by age, it’s only because he was similarly unaffected by youth. It’s not like he’s had to figure out how to play when his athleticism started to decline. He never used it even when he had it. Assuming Timmy ever had it in the first place.

In both writing and basketball, it’s easy to get carried away. To mistake complexity and creativity for real accomplishment. All the adjectives and adverbs and flourishes in the world don’t mean a thing if you fail to tell the story. And a killer crossover or an otherworldly vertical doesn’t matter much if you can’t shoot or play defense. Tim Duncan has made it abundantly clear that he wants to tell the story. With four championships and counting, he’s told it very well indeed.

Best PF of all-time. He is better than Dwight, and it’s not even that close. As I’ve already said, Dwight makes 2-3 moves a game that makes you wonder if he started playing ball last week or last month. Ugh.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

    What Myles said.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Tim Duncan is the only good thing about the spurs for me.

  • Mr Anonymous

    Dirk over Duncan? Come on.

Duncan is a better defender, rebounded better, shot better percentages, blocked better and had more assists.

Duncan was playing like an absolute beast pre-injury (and his end of season stats were still damn good). If he’s unaffected by injury, which is an assumption I guess the guys used, he’s a monster.

And here’s what I think the Top 5 should finish like:

    5) Dwight Howard
    4) Kobe Bryant
    3) Dwayne Wade
    2) Chris Paul
    1) Lebron James

Interesting point about Tim’s athleticism. Did he ever really have it? I mean, he’s def slower now but was he ever that quick to begin with? He always ran the floor well, but that was about the only thing that you ever noticed about him as an athlete.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

howard ahead of duncan? i know they play different positions, so it’s tough to make comparisons, but…whaaaaaaaaat?

  • tavoris

@ Bryan-oh yea…he seemed to be much better offensively on the Nuggets tho, Maybe it was because people could never double off of Abdul- Rauf or Bryant Stith. Those Hawks with Mook and Steve Smith were pretty nice too…but Deke was like 45 y/o by that time.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

howard ahead of duncan? i know they play different positions, so it’s tough to make comparisons, but…whaaaaaaaaat? (actually mine would be “Duncan ahead of Nowitzki, whaaaaat?) comment pyramids are fun.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    What it should be:
    1. Kobe
    2. LeBron
    3. Wade
    4. Paul
    5. Howard.
    SLAM’s actual list:
    1. LeBron
    2. Kobe
    3. Wade
    4. Paul
    5. Howard

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Darksaber
When Dirk plays both sides of the ball he can pass Tim Duncan. And learns how to be a better passer.

  • tavoris

    Allenp, and wins 4 rings

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@Jukai: Felt a little short? It seems you missed the whole point. It’s harder to write a short piece than it is a long one. Great write up Russ.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

By SLAM’s actual list, I mean my prediction for what it will be.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’m not sure who’d I’d take on this list though; Paul or Wade?

  • rog123

Duncan used to throw it down nasty back in the day. I wasn’t a fan his first couple years but thank god for youtube. He throws it down sooo sick on everyone!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Best power-forward of all time, I agree.
So who’s second? Karl Malone or Barkley?

  • TADOne

    1) LeBron
    2) KB
    3) Wade
    4) Howard
    5) CP3

  • rog123

Call me crazy but id rather have duncan lead my team than anyone who’s not named kobe or lebron! Actually if you want anyone besides those 3 guys leading your team, you are the crazy ones

  • rog123

Second goes to the mailman, he coulda maybe been first but that jordan guy always ruined it

  • rog123

I get that this piece was supposed to be basic, simple and meaningful like duncans game , but come on. A top 5 player deserves a little more ink. Did u even describe his game other than fundamental or consistent? Shot blocker, one of the best low post scorer in the ever, top rebounder, one of the best teamates and leaders ever in all sports. And he is clutch. So clutch that u better not leave him open at the 3 point line shaq!!!!

  • Sigurður Einar (Iceland).

This is the real top 5.

    5. Duncan
    4. Paul
    3. Lebron
    2. Wadde
    1. Kobe.

Basketball is not always about puting upp numbers. It about the litle think that dose not show in stats. Kobe is MVP. Lebron will be the king but not right know.

  • tavoris

rog123, I thought that was Dirk that left him at the 3pt line…

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

    5. Sebastian Telfair
    4. The guy who stopped prep TMac
    3. White girl
    2. Kobe
    1. LeBron

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

People really don’t understand how great Duncan is on both ends, or at least how good he’s always been. The sole reason why the Suns couldn’t be the Spurs was Tim Duncan. He was it. His ability to dominate both sides of the ball regardless of the tempo was what prevented the Suns from getting to the Finals.
The fact that Dirk and the Mavs actually beat Duncan to get to the Finals that one year is impressive. Granted, it was a horrible play by Manu that was the difference, but Dirk did lead his team over one of the greatest players of all-time.
Although, Devin Harris was the real difference in that series.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Even I the biggest spurs hater on this site can say duncan is truly great. He’s still great 19 and 10 with almost 2 blocks in like 33 minutes game? Beastmode.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Tavoris: motumbo had one post smash hiss ass into the defenders crotch back up and use his long ass arms to drop in some bap hook shot.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    Post move*

  • tavoris

Bryan…that was Mutombo’s only post move…hell, he even did that to Shaq

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Deke was ugly on offense. Really ugly. But, strangely effective against some people.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Dwight does that same Mutombo post move. Where he just horizontally takes big layup steps across the lane and does an awkward running hook shot.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Allenp: Right. Duncan is the sole big man in the last decade who plays at both ends of the court at the highest level of skill and intensity, with the possible exception of KG. Shaq, while offensively without peer, has the defensive ability but slacks off a lot. Dwight and Amare are each only great at one end, and mediocre at the other. Yao is decent at both O and D, but like all giant big men he suffers from injuries and immobility.

  • D12FSU

Why is everyone hating on Dwight, he’s coming off a season where he became the 5th player to lead the L in both blocks and rebounds, a playoffs where he beat 2 teams no one thought they had any chance of winning, and giving orl it’s first finals victory every (the Cleveland lebrons have 0)….and o yea…he’s only turning 24 in dcember!!!! I don’t care if he only has “3 moves” he averaged 21 a game, so as long as the ball goes in, I don’t care how.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Everybody is hating on Dwight because he has obvious problems in his game. Period.
And we’re not talking about minor problems, we’re talking about massive gaping holes.
Dwight can’t make post moves, can’t shoot free throws, and can’t pass. He got abused by Pau Gasol in the post.
Dwight is nice against inferior teams but the simple truth is that against top flight, skilled big men, he’s lacking.
Which is why I would prefer to have Duncan (if healthy) next year.

  • Omar3

Only Duncan and Kobe have 4 rings on that top 6 list. Actually any rings besides D-Wade. CP3, Dwight, and Bron are good, but they haven’t proved to really be on this list with a championship. Duncan will get his fifth this year and next year’s top 50 yall will all have him in the top 5 for sure.

  • Garett

I would argue anyone in the NBA is amazingly athletic, and even in that range TD still isn’t as bad as he’s often made out to be. Yes, on the NBA athletic ability scale TD’s not the highest, but a 7 footer that can move like him is impressive. He doesn’t jump the highest (most visible sign of athleticism in basketball), but his lateral mobility, coordination, strength etc. likely scores high amongst his peers

    Good spot for him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Garret
Good point. Duncan is like Steve Nash when it comes to athleticism.

  • http://dfkjslf.com Jukai

Duncan’s defense has dropped drastically last year. Tis true.
I like that line, “Duncan is like Steve Nash when it comes to athleticism.”

  • K3V1N3o5

Duncan RIGHT NOW is still better than Dwight.I do think Dwight expands his game more this year and takes the crown for best big man in the L. 5)Duncan 4)CP3 3)LeBron 2)D-Wade 1)Kobe

  • jdote

dont agree with the ranking but this was a cooooooooooold write up. good looks

  • Omar3

So is this the NBA lineup?
    PG CP3
    SG Kobe/Wade
    SF LeBron
    PF Tim Duncan
    C Dwight
    ???

  • la huey

howard ahead of duncan? i know they play different positions, so it’s tough to make comparisons, but…whaaaaaaaaat?

  • jdote

does duncan impact the game as much as howard still.. i mean d howard, despite not having much of an offensive game still causes a lot of havoc..puts people in foul trouble and attacks the offensive boards much harder than duncan..he can play more minutes as well.. id take duncan n e dai though..

  • http://yahoo.com kva45

GOOD SPACE FOR THE GREATEST BIG MAN OF ALL TIME!FOR NOW.I EXPECT HIM TO BE HIGHER NEXT LIST.WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP PUTTING CPCHOKE IN THE TOP FIVE?HE HAD ONE REALLY GOOD SEASON AND YOU GUYS THINK HE IS ISAIAH THOMAS! D-WILL KILLS HIM ALL THE TIME! YOU GUYS NEED TO REALLY WATCH BASKETBALL AND STOP LISTENING TO THE PRESS.CP3,LBJ AND DWIGHT ARE ALL PRESS BOYS. 1.KOBE 2.MELO 3.CHAUNCEY 4.TIMMY 5.D-WILL.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

KVA its pretty obvious that you think your caps lock changes the meaning of your words and you obviously don’t understand basketball all that well….and your prolly from denver. Melo is terrible at defense, implying he is a top 5 player in the league is ignorant. Chauncey Billups, 3rd in the league? haha and then Deron is 5. Your not a smart person

  • rog123

Defenders can leave howard alone when he is outta the paint, they gotta stay with duncan pretty much everywhere inside the 3 line. Defenders have trouble with howard because he is so strong and agile for a center, but defenders got trouble with ducan because they can face guard him but they can’t stop his post moves

  • tavoris

Joel…that’s Patrick Ewing’s move all the way

  • tavoris

nbk…I saw those caps and immediately ignored everything kva said

  • http://slamonline.com Nbk

tavoris: i saw those caps and thanked god it wasn’t you….haha jk, i saw them and immediately knew what i was dealing with

  • tavoris

Garett, I think Brian Scalabrine defies your logic about everybody’s athleticism…

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

I wouldn’t underestimate anyone in the nba, its like kenny smith once said on the back page of slam “steve will give you 50!”. And its true just about any 14th man on an nba roster will come to your town and scrub you up.
