Top 50: Kobe Bryant, no. 2

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Ryan Jones / @thefarmerjones

…in which we discuss Kobe Bryant’s greatness, through the words and opinions and clever turns of phrase of men who never heard of Kobe Bryant, because they’re dead, and mostly hKobe Bryantave been since long before basketball was a thing that existed; but, as these were clearly smart and opinionated guys, and as some of the smarter and more opinionated guys I’ve met in my life watch basketball, this method of observing Kobe Bryant’s greatness seems right and just, if not in fact infallible.

The fact that their definitions of greatness differ wildly is beside the point. And at least half the fun.

And: Because no matter how tedious this might turn out, writing about the things Kobe has done and still can do on the basketball court would be infinitely more tedious. You know. You’ve seen it. There are no secrets. There is nothing left to know.

Plus, quotes from famous dead guys fill space.

“It is true greatness to have in one the frailty of a man and the security of a god.” —Lucius Annaeus Seneca

What Lou Seems to be Saying: That we humans are defined by our faults and weaknesses, and that those among us who rise to places of prominence and accomplish significant things do so with an almost super-human confidence that defies the very faults and weaknesses that define us. This is as close as any of us will ever get to immortality.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 124%

“Goodness does not consist in greatness, but greatness in goodness.” —Athenaeus

What Athenaeus Seems to be Saying: Admitting that he’s a socialist pansy is what.

Perhaps that’s harsh. Regardless, having watched Kobe adopt his focused-guy/meanie face en route to leading a team that was finally, indisputable his to the NBA title last season, it seems he has lifted one more tainted page from MJ’s book. And it worked, so why not? He’s got the offseason to be “good.” The season is for motherf*cking your way to the Larry O’Brien.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 17%

*

“Great and good are seldom the same man.” —Winston Churchill

What Winston Seems to be Saying: Athenaeus was a chump.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: Exactly 50%

*

“Great men never make bad use of their superiority. They see it and feel it and are not less modest.” —Jean Jacques Rousseau

What Jean Jacques Seems to be Saying: That he was Swiss, and as such, doesn’t know sh*t about the art of war or the game of basketball.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 8%

*

“You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration.” —James Allen

What Jim Seems to be Saying: Keep it in your pants, dummy.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 91%

*

“The herd seek out the great, not for their sake, but for their influence; and the great welcome them out of vanity or need.” —Napoleon Bonaparte

What Napoleon Seems to be Saying: Riding or dying with a guy you’ve never met and probably never will, and who mostly likely wouldn’t give a sh*t about you if you did, is stupid. As such, this reflects more on the herd than the great one, and the individual in question can only be blamed so much. Especially if he’s got a Nike deal. Herds buy shoes, too.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 63% (Note: Accuracy as a Description of LeBron James’ Greatness: 64%)

*

“No one ever became great by imitation.” —Samuel Johnson

What Sam Seems to be Saying: “Be Like Mike” was just a marketing slogan. You weren’t actually supposed to try.

That said, if you manage to pull it off…

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 2%

*

“He is great who is what he is from nature, and who never reminds us of others.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: Pretty much what Sam Johnson was saying a minute ago.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 1.9%

*

“To be great is to be misunderstood.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: I think I’m paraphrasing Russ (though he may have been paraphrasing me paraphrasing him first), but I don’t think Kobe even understands Kobe.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 439%

*

“No great man ever complains of want of opportunity.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: Nobody likes a whiner.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: –99%

*

“A great thing can only be done by a great person. And they do it without effort.” —John Ruskin

What John Seems to be Saying: Assuming he means the great ones make it look easy…

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 87%

*

“There is a great man who makes every man feel small. But the real great man is the man who makes every man feel great.” —Gilbert Keith Chesterton

What Gil Seems to be Saying: This is probably why LeBron got more votes than you.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 99.8%

The lesson? Greatness is hard to define. And so is Kobe.

Thanks for your time. Feedback, as always, is welcome.

Ryan, you wrote a good piece. It really says everything there is to say about Kobe without tired analysis or statistical data. It says Kobe’s game is beyond those things, he is simply great – so there it is.

No.1 shoulb be kobe! His early career is better than LBJ at least!!

  • young HP

what a f*cki*g disappointment. are u kidding me? u guys consider yourselves the best basketball mag in the plabet and yet u guys couldnt even do a “best player list” right. well, u guys could say that lebron has better scoring, assist, rebounding, steals averages but all those dont mean shi*t cause at the end of the day, its the rings that count, its what defines a “great player”, in kobe’s case, the “best player” in the world. 4 rings as opposed to none, damn, not even worth debating for.

People kill me saying Lebron hasn’t won anything yet. First of all Kobe won his first championship as the undisputed leader of his team… before then he was always Robin to Shaq’s Batman. Secondly all these short-minded Lebron haters are all probably too young to remember but most people considered Jordan the best player a good 2-3 years before he even won 1 ring. Now that Lebron is doing his thing and has a much more well rounded game then Kobe (he is becoming the triple double King) he hasn’t won anything yet. To all them I say… haters… please.

  • ball4life

F*ck that kobe should be #1. He is one of the top 5 players of all time. Lebron is good but hes not on kobe’s level yet. Its’s like comparing Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler.

  • http://gmail Akash

Number 2? What the?? He averaged 28 points per game, was second in MVP voting,Finals MVP,and his team was second in the league.LeBron is a beast player but I still KB24 is the best.

  • http://gmail Akash

Kobe should be number 1 because he’s a hell of a player who knows how to pass, score, and defend. He was MVP in the year his team lost in the finals.

  • kobe… no joke its my real name

Lecrap hasnt prooven himself to be better, where r his rings? he is amazing, but kobe can beat em any day

  • ERIC G

KOBE is the best player in basketball right now FOR EVER AND EVER

  • http://mbuzzy.com joe salgado

Kobe is the one I honestly beleve u will never see a better player than kobe!

  • bigstriker

I’m a huge kobe fan and have been for years…but i am also a huge basketball fan and can look at the game without bias.I don’t believe kobe is 2 but i also don’t think bron should be 2.at the level these two guys are plying at with the respect to each other’s age (and the miles kobe has put on his body) it should be a tie for number 1.they really are untouchable right now in the league.I won’t go into the differences in their games and how they are both great but they really should be 1 and 1a.
P.S. this article really was a boring read.

  • rafael

I’m a Kobe hater first and foremost. One and two should be between Wade and Bron. He should be #3 if its up to me. He can’t guard anybody on his level positions 1 to 3. What I’m saying is, he can’t guard another star like himself. Yes he can score 40 plus a night but he takes just as many shots, so you do the math. Each shot is worth 2 or 3 points multiply by how many shots his taken not including free throws. He is not anywhere near MJ’s nut suck. So, please don’t mention him in the same breath as MJ. If he is the best right now then why is it even debatable whose numero UNO. After MJ won his first title untill his last. There was no debate who was #1, every day its not even a question!!! Yes, you won the title last year ’cause of who? D. Fisher- you don’t believe me? look at where they were at after he left the Lakers and when he came back! All those big shots to win the Lakers championships is taken by who? Robert Horry and Derick Fisher, so there I rest my case!!!!

  • bill breedley

two 60 win seasons where he does not reach the finals… another record of Lebron kobe will never ever break. so much for lebron being slam’s no 1.

  • Cesar R Lopez

If Kobe and the Lakers beat the Celtics…you guys better fix these rankings or lose a lot of cred about your basketball knowledge. Because what Kobe is doing in these playoffs should speak volumes that he’s not done and that his skills surpass that of Mr. James.

  • DreXnaW21

Kobe Bryant is the greatest basketball player in the NBA. LeBron James needs to win a couple of championships in order to become one of the greatest to play the game. Kobe is better than LeBron in everything.

  • johnpebenito

kobe is the Better than lebron – Michael Jordan the GOAT

  • johnpebenito

KOBE IS BETTER THAN LEBRON – MICHAEL JORDAN!

  • bill breedley

    Kobe > Sidekick

  • adub

    KOBE should def be #1…

  • adub

5 rings and yall put him at #2.. what the hell does he not done..

  • SoCalHoopsFan

    Kobe > LeBron
    5 rings talk
    Kobe pre-injury was MVP
LeBron has athleticism but lacks skill
LeBron left to be Wade’s sidekick!

And Durant has gotta be in top 5, at least above Duncan at 6. Duncan hasn’t been top-6 for over 2 years!

  • http://curlymorris.wordpress.com/ Curly Morris

It’s amazing. I wonder if any media outlet worth their ink would have ever decided to suggest that anyone other Jordan was the best in the game while MJ was pounding out titles. The lack of respect that Bryant gets is still befuddling. The LBJ – Kobe debate is like comparing Dominique to Jordan during their heyday. Wilkins was a superior physical specimen and could even jump higher than MJ, but nobody ever questioned who was the better baller…the Larry O’Brien trophies answered that question. Astonishing.
