Top 50: Kobe Bryant, no. 2

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Ryan Jones / @thefarmerjones

…in which we discuss Kobe Bryant’s greatness, through the words and opinions and clever turns of phrase of men who never heard of Kobe Bryant, because they’re dead, and mostly hKobe Bryantave been since long before basketball was a thing that existed; but, as these were clearly smart and opinionated guys, and as some of the smarter and more opinionated guys I’ve met in my life watch basketball, this method of observing Kobe Bryant’s greatness seems right and just, if not in fact infallible.

The fact that their definitions of greatness differ wildly is beside the point. And at least half the fun.

And: Because no matter how tedious this might turn out, writing about the things Kobe has done and still can do on the basketball court would be infinitely more tedious. You know. You’ve seen it. There are no secrets. There is nothing left to know.

Plus, quotes from famous dead guys fill space.

*

“It is true greatness to have in one the frailty of a man and the security of a god.” —Lucius Annaeus Seneca

What Lou Seems to be Saying: That we humans are defined by our faults and weaknesses, and that those among us who rise to places of prominence and accomplish significant things do so with an almost super-human confidence that defies the very faults and weaknesses that define us. This is as close as any of us will ever get to immortality.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 124%

*

“Goodness does not consist in greatness, but greatness in goodness.” —Athenaeus

What Athenaeus Seems to be Saying: Admitting that he’s a socialist pansy is what.

Perhaps that’s harsh. Regardless, having watched Kobe adopt his focused-guy/meanie face en route to leading a team that was finally, indisputable his to the NBA title last season, it seems he has lifted one more tainted page from MJ’s book. And it worked, so why not? He’s got the offseason to be “good.” The season is for motherf*cking your way to the Larry O’Brien.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 17%

*

“Great and good are seldom the same man.” —Winston Churchill

What Winston Seems to be Saying: Athenaeus was a chump.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: Exactly 50%

*

“Great men never make bad use of their superiority. They see it and feel it and are not less modest.” —Jean Jacques Rousseau

What Jean Jacques Seems to be Saying: That he was Swiss, and as such, doesn’t know sh*t about the art of war or the game of basketball.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 8%

*

“You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration.” —James Allen

What Jim Seems to be Saying: Keep it in your pants, dummy.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 91%

*

“The herd seek out the great, not for their sake, but for their influence; and the great welcome them out of vanity or need.” —Napoleon Bonaparte

What Napoleon Seems to be Saying: Riding or dying with a guy you’ve never met and probably never will, and who mostly likely wouldn’t give a sh*t about you if you did, is stupid. As such, this reflects more on the herd than the great one, and the individual in question can only be blamed so much. Especially if he’s got a Nike deal. Herds buy shoes, too.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 63% (Note: Accuracy as a Description of LeBron James’ Greatness: 64%)

*

“No one ever became great by imitation.” —Samuel Johnson

What Sam Seems to be Saying: “Be Like Mike” was just a marketing slogan. You weren’t actually supposed to try.

That said, if you manage to pull it off…

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 2%

*

“He is great who is what he is from nature, and who never reminds us of others.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: Pretty much what Sam Johnson was saying a minute ago.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 1.9%

*

“To be great is to be misunderstood.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: I think I’m paraphrasing Russ (though he may have been paraphrasing me paraphrasing him first), but I don’t think Kobe even understands Kobe.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 439%

*

“No great man ever complains of want of opportunity.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Ralph Seems to be Saying: Nobody likes a whiner.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: –99%

*

“A great thing can only be done by a great person. And they do it without effort.” —John Ruskin

What John Seems to be Saying: Assuming he means the great ones make it look easy…

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 87%

*

“There is a great man who makes every man feel small. But the real great man is the man who makes every man feel great.” —Gilbert Keith Chesterton

What Gil Seems to be Saying: This is probably why LeBron got more votes than you.

Accuracy as a Description of Kobe Bryant’s Greatness: 99.8%

*

The lesson? Greatness is hard to define. And so is Kobe.

Thanks for your time. Feedback, as always, is welcome.

They already got one for Magic. I’m not saying it’s right, but he’s the closest thing to MJ L.A. will ever have to call its own and he’ll be a Laker for life so…yeah its happening.

  • Slam Reader

Are you nuts! Kobe Bryant supposed to be number 1!!!

  • Slam Reader

How can all of you not understand that Kobe Bryant is the greatest human being playing basketball just because he made himself the player he is at the moment, that is completely his accomplishment and anybody else’s!!!
But your place number one (I don’t even wanna call his name, coz this is all hilarious, I mean the way it’s now with that man being number one) is unfairly given because Lebron was just born that way and this is not his merit, he is just a nature freak!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Brad Long: Yeah, Kobe’s took the Lakers to the playoffs with Smush Parker. And I do think he’s kind of better than LeBron.
But LeBron took the Cavaliers to the FINALS by himself, with Daniel Gibson and Damon Jones as his point guards.

  • kadavour

aw man, i don’t know where to start. The quotes were great. Didn’t get the argument about how Kob’s performance last year projected him as the number 2 man this year though. guess because it didn’t happen. most of these quotes were about Kobe the person, not Kobe the baller. If we learned anything at all this week, its that much of the NBA’s greats are AS$HOLES, and i don’t think Kobe will ever match the likes of Magic, Bird, Isaiah, and Jordan in those respects. Kobe the baller’s team won less regular season games than LeBron’s team. However, Kobe’s team managed to beat same the team (Orlando Magic) that beat LeBron’s team in the playoffs by the same margin (4-1). People don’t realize how much LeBron is like AI. He commanded the ball more than MAGIC did in the playoffs, as such, his skills don’t accommodate other primary scorers, ESPECIALLY since he doesn’t have a mid-range game. Tell me this, put Bron on the Lakers with Bynum and Pau, and you face overloaded zones like the ones Thibodeau and company are going to throw at you, where does the mid-range threat that keeps those defenses honest come from?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

the more i think about it, the more i think it’s appropriate that Ryan wrote this article. i see so many comments bashing this article as terrible and lazy, when in fact it takes much research and thoughts to put a piece like this together. maybe one doesn’t appreciate this style of journalism, but people hate because they don’t understand, which is exactly the same way Kobe is being treated.

  • b

    Great spot for him

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

i dunno albie, it reads like it too him 20 minutes – google “greatness”, hash it together, get bored after first two and just write one sentence witticisms thereafter… i don’t see us getting 1000+ comments this time… ego not soothed… poor Farmer Jones…

  • Shem

    Im done with SLAM

  • Ryan Jones Sucks

i’d be okay with kobe being #2 if there were reasons/explanations for him being at this ranking. however, this article failed to do so. Ryan Jones, THIS ARTICLE SUCKS. SOMEONE FIRE THIS PATHETIC WRITER

  • Slam Reader

    I’m done with SLAM either!!!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    That was brilliant.
I loved Jones’ subtle “keep it in your pants” line.
    That just made it.
    Awesome.

  • Outlaw

    SLAM has gone retarded
    Kobe >>>>> LeBron
    LeBron is overrated

  • max

@albie1kenobi first i thought you were joking when you said it takes a lot of time to write an article like this, but you seem to actually be serious…
It takes like 30-45min to write an article like this. Just google greatness + quotes and kind of analyze (“kind of” as only quotes 1 and 2 are analyzed) the quotes or write uncreative-meant-to-be-funny stuff under them.
So dont give me the “brilliant”, “smart, “creative”, “funny” for this article, however i do think jones meant to write the article the way it is (quality and everything) to mock exactly those people who are now outraged by how bad this article is. The last lines kind of gives it away.

  • Jrooks

    Kobe 1

  • Omnixyience (Philippines)

This should be one of the worst articles I’v ever red….

it’s so awful the lines, the meaning even the position! WTF! what gives you the right to put Lebron above Kobe? does Lebron have rings? I can go all day arguing about this..

If you talk and arguing is because Lebron has higher stats, is that all you can do? all you think and say is “this is all about stats”. It’s stupidity, stupid article, stupid author!

  • kevin moore

kobe 1 BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO kobe is 1

  • Vish

this article was lazy and garbage. on the other hand, you just gave Kobe even more fire to win it all. Thanks SLAM..

btw, until Lebron wins anything, he will never be #1. Sorry.

  • josh

kobe should be number 3… Wade, Lebron and then Kobe. These articles are about what they are predicting that they do this year right? so kobes “rings” argument has no bearing in the placement… they dont mean sh!t when talking about what happens this year. Obviously many Laker fa gs .. i mean fans, dont get that. Oh yah, it was pretty entertaining watching the melo-less thugs beat LA in LA. I really dont like either team since I am a Blazer fan, so I didnt no which team to cheer for, but you cant go wrong cheering against the lakers. Laker fa gs, shoot.. i mean fans, better hope gasol does not have continuing injury problems throughout the season. Without Gasol, Lakers drop quite a few spots in the west.

  • Tim

Kobe will never get the respect he deserves. Kobe>Lebron. 4 rings. Count em.

  • Lazarus

NO DWAYNE WADE, CHRIS PAUL AND DWIGHT HOWARD! are all better than kobe

  • intlong

“This is probably why LeBron got more votes than you” Are you kidding me ?john, have a look at Kwame Brown ,The Grim Reaper,Trevor Ariza and Paul Gasol…look their perfomance at lakers and other teams. How can you say that LeBron is better than Kobe?!

  • intlong

  • alfonsia

u know kobes not doing another slam cover.

  • alfonsia

u know kobes not doing another slam cover or article right?

  • andy

very funny, thoughtful article + a Mitch Hedberg joke hidden amongst the tiresome comments = me happy. thanks SLAM (and Izzo)

  • theo

quotes? thats all? wow for a player with 4 rings, u just write quotes? and i understand that this is just the 09-10 season but still kobe is the best leader in the nba. lebrons numbers are going a bit down with shaq-a-claus

  • Nick

What is this Lebron love crap, he hasn’t accomplished anything in the league. Kobe has four rings, and is 50x more skilled the LBJ, this is BS

  • Real ballers know

wow kobe #2? not a very intelligent position for the man who can do anything on the basketball court. well whatever, kobe will see this as a challenge and play even better next season

  • http://gmurray8@hotmail.com Garett

Bill Simmons should have wrote this piece

  • Raj

Its quite clear Kobe is #1 and has been since about 2000. Just like Steve Nash winning 2 MVPs when Kobe deserved it, Lebron is riding his athleticism coupled with media hype to #1 on many rankings. LBJ is an incredible athlete with MEDIOCRE skills, his dribbling and shooting are limited and were EXPOSED by the Magic. His defense consists of cherry picking, and relying on the rest of the team to do the work. Kobe is a refined fine wine, getting better ever year, adding more moves and skills. LBJ still doesn’t have the footwork, shooting, or D of a 21 year old Kobe, let alone 31 year old Mamba. Its says here that Kobe is #1 followed by DWade .. then who cares, this article alone was a complete embarrassment to SLAM with its fluff and lack of effort. Quotes? Really? Did you get paid for this?

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS

@RAJ…….:you write “with MEDIOCRE skills”. Are you drunk…?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

RAJ, your comment sounds like mines: This article to me is lame. Kobe Haters will like this article, because it does not focus on Kobe’s game which right now getting to the level of MJ. Lets not talk about Kobe’s game, but quotes about dead men, who thought they were smart. WOW. Kobe deserves a better article. SLAM, can I write the Kobe article for the next top 50, because Kobe is the PLAYER OF THE DECADE, over Shaq, and Tim and Is only behind TIGER world wide and he gets quotes. Lets talk about Kobe’s leadership last season to his fourth title and number one to some of yall dudes, but the last title KObe went off, should have been Finals MVP, with Shaq that year, but sill lets talk about Kobe’s moves, the fake spin shot, the wet jumper or post and added post moves or lets talk abotu Kobe’s desire to be the best basketball player ever, something Lebron doesn’t have, lets talk about Kobe’s willingness to let his stats drop so they can win a title, Lets talk about how Kobe, has matured into a complete basketball player, but he was already that, just had scrubs and still went to playoffs, Lets talk about Kobe if winning two more titles will be top 5. KOBE for the real MVP trophy, because we get sports writers who are fans now, who vote based off teammates they don’t have—–EXAMPLE Steve Nash-two time MVP. KOBE is still Doing Work, so write about his Work. The real King who has the right hardware.

  • Jayceon

f**k dem both MICHAEL JORDAN betta den all these wack players these days

  • http://celticknightk3@aol.com Celtic Knight

People like Seed are totally delusional or just very ignorant to NBA Legends and their history and I would have to agree with Jay. Jordan, Magic, and Bird are untouchable by all the players that came after them. Just looking at the statistics and championships… Do I need to say more?… No I didn’t think so. :/

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS

The Seed…….:1) you write “quotes about dead men, who thought they were smart” . They didn’t “thought”,many of them are some of the greatest minds of all time, influencing mine and yours everyday life in much more ways than M.J. or any today pol*tic*an will ever succeed to do so…
    2) “Is only behind TIGER world wide ” there are at least 5 soccer players EASILY M-U-C-H M-O-R-E popular world wide than Tiger in the last decade. And that is only soccer……this was one of the most comic-blindsighted statements i’ve read in a while…..i mean, you don’t even have to get out of your room to understand this, just take a look at world press to see who is on everydays front pages for the last 10 years (Ronaldo, Messi, Beckham,Kaka,Zindan,Bolt,Schumacher, etc…)

  • don

    #1 lebron.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Celtic Knight your stupid, Larry and Magic played on stack teams, MJ did the most with less, Jordan is the only untouchable, Even Magic said Kobe is close to the level of Jordan and guess who Larry Bird favorite player is Kobe Bryant yes and Larry had the most help with at least two of his teammates avearging close to 20 or more points get real dude. PLus Larry numbers are similar to Kobes, Kobe plays different positions Larry just played with better scorers and had more rebounds. Larry and players go look and didn’t Larry only win 4. Magic won 5. Ok and Magic played with Worthy, Kareem, Scott and many more. Larry had Mchale, Johnson, Parish, Ainge and more. Dude Kobe played with way lesser talent than that. Kobe has 4 and will end with 6 titles to me. Did you cat will watch people defintely move Bird and Magic out the way.

  • http://yahoo KEVIN45

KOBE GETS RINGS! HE DONT WORRY ABOUT STATS OR COVER BOYS!(LEBRON) DUDE IS A PUNK! GO BRAYLON.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS those dudes don’t influence me first all, I can care less about dead dudes who try to say important things at their time in life. I know someone who has more real quotes and truths than them and can really make you think about your life without some silly quotes. Get real man, I can care less about MJ views. Next go to CNN they did polls and Kobe was behind Tiger, Soccer is not big in America, COme on, I know about those dudes you are talking about, but in America soccer is a sport behind hockey. Get real Greek dude, soccer is big in other parts of the world, but America fuels which sports stars get seen, but the avearge urban kid does not care about soccer. Thats why a lot AMericans thought Beckham was going to be good, but I know a little about soccer and knew he was washed up and not a top player any more, but people in AMerica thought they were going to see a great player now, NOT and in America people play other sports if they truly have atheltic talent than soccer, so World wide, like CNN said FACTS Kobe is number 2, you forget Kobe has the number one selling jersey in Europe, China and America. YES and Kobe clearly sparks interest if you like him or not. GREEK GUY go watch some soccer on a channel nobobdy watches.

  • nashty

you guys sound like a bunch of whiny school girls. The list is for the up-coming season and don’t read it if you don’t like the aritcle. Jesus….

  • mookie

Kobe is just like Slam magazine. Slam gets no love for being a great Basketball Mag. Labeled as a “wanna-be” mag. Slam, after 15 years, finally got some votes in NBA awards. Kobe just started getting love from basketball writers, is labeled as a “wanna-be mike”.

  • Richard ESQ

Kobe is better than Lebron in my book because to quote another great man, Herman Edwards: “You Play To Win The Game,” and no player in the NBA will cause a team to win more than Kobe Bryant right now. Lebron may be bigger stronger faster, Lebron may do more things overall, but head to head, one on one, with everything on the line, Kobe will continue to beat Lebron. He will continue to do so until his body breaks down.

At this point in their careers, Kobe is a champion, Lebron is a tape confiscator.
