Cavs/Magic Game 1 Recap

Superman knocks the King off his throne.

by Rodger Bohn

The atmosphere pre-game outside of the arena was something that the city of Cleveland has not seen in a long time. Being a Cleveland native (Ohio City stand up!), it was breath taking to see thousands of people standing outside of the Q chanting “MVP, MVP” two hours before the game was set to tip. For a city that ranks amongst the poorest in America (thank you Detroit from taking that honor off of our hands), one would think that you were in an area not hit by the economic downfall.

The sea of maroon and gold was at it’s capacity far before tip, giving the feel of a college game rather then a playoff game with seats that averaged out to nearly $70 a pop. After going through “The Shot” with MJ over Ehlo and then MJ over Gerald Wilkins a few years later, Cleveland fans are dying with optimism and this appears to be their year. Superman has made it clear that he’s going to try to be the next Cleveland villain.

Now on to the game:

-It appeared that the Magic started out in a 2-3 zone. Then I just realized that it was Dwight Howard plotting in the key.

-After Orlando’s first miss, Dwight Howard swiftly moved Illgauskas out of the way for a monster dunk that literally broke the shot clock. A few Cavs fans ran in terror in fear of the shot clock crashing down on them, but luckily for myself, the Cavs’ PR people placed me behind the opposite basket.

-Hate to say it, but Tony DiLeo was right…Dwight Howard is a walking three second violation, on both ends of the floor.

-We now have to deal with the lovely shot clocks in the corner of the court. Nothing better then looking towards the far right corner of the hardwood when trying to manage the clock.

-Cleveland native and Lakewood St. Edward’s graduate Jawad Williams looking smooth at the end of the bench, collecting his paycheck while being on the inactive roster.

-Two minutes into the game and it’s already looking like Dwight Howard is really going to get off this series. Big Z doesn’t look like he can get around the way he used to, despite the time off. It’s going to be scary if Dwight can knock down that left hand jump hook with consistency.

-Rashard Lewis should kill Varejao off of the bounce, yet Van Gundy doesn’t seem to want to exploit that mismatch at all early on.

-4:55 left in the first quarter and the Magic score their first points by someone not named Dwight Howard.

-LBJ with his first bucket around the 3:45 mark in the first, though he’s got more dimes then a parking meter.

-Patrick Chewing has really been rubbing off on Howard, as seen with that sky hook.

-LeBron took off from outside of the key for that dunk at the end of the first quarter, no lie. He then hammered Dwight Howard on the other end and didn’t get a foul called.

-Someone desperately needs to step it up as a second option for Orlando. 1 point per quarter between Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu on 5 shots is not going to get you to the NBA finals. The Magic’s role players have been solid thus far, though. Magic down 33-19 at the end of 1.

-Dwight Howard is a monster. Big Ben and Joe Smith cannot guard him now. 5 years ago, maybe.

-Before his career is over, Dwight Howard will break a hoop. He’s almost done it twice so far in this game.

-Wally Szcerbiak is guarding Hedo. Someone please give this Turkish assassin the ball.

-While Hedo didn’t get the ball, the Polish Hammer got a dunk. Let’s see who he criticizes in Poland about the pass.

-FINALLY Van Gundy is letting Rashard go to work out there. The guy is one of the more versatile power forwards in the game, let him be that.

-Hedo and Rashard with back to back buckets. Things could get interesting.

-If LeBron keeps advancing his post game and gets more consistency on his outside shot, he very well could become the best ever. There, I said it.

- Mickael Pietrus, Courtney Lee, and Anthony Johnson are doing all of the little things that don’t show up in the stat sheet, keeping Orlando in the game.

-Sitting here pondering who can get their head higher above the rim: LeBron or Dwight?

-Unfortunately I’m on the opposite end of Stan Van Gundy, so I can’t comment on his spazz outs up close and personal, although we all know they’re surely happening during this time out.

-Hedo is straight nasty once he gets it going. I personally love when they run the high pick and roll with him, but apparently Van Gundy doesn’t since they haven’t done it once so far and it’s nearly halftime.

-LeBron is the master of the European third step. Basketball purists may not like it, but it’s effective and he get’s away with it.

-Hedo is starting to go to work, but why settle for fadeaways against 6’3 Delonte West?

-Best 10 seconds of basketball I’ve seen in a long time: LeBron James pull-up, the Polish Hammer with yet another dunk (who doesn’t love that), then Mo Williams with a 70 footer at the buzzer.

-Halftime now and I’m going to enjoy a complimentary Diet Pepsi in the media room, as the guy behind me yells “You don’t see that in Chicago!” to Jay Mariotti, who is sitting next to me.

-Why are the Cavaliers up by 15 at halftime? 14 assists, 0 turnovers. Yes, you read the right…not one single turnover in the first half. LeBron’s 26 points help too.

-LeBron shows why he’s the MVP with his block on Dwight Howard, prompting fans to yell “Get that weak stuff outta here!” a famous Austin Carr saying.

-LeBron is then posterized on the next play by Courtney Lee.

-Skip to my Lou has finally arisen, remembering that he’s playing in the Eastern Conference Finals and not an AND 1 Mixtape.

-Rashard starting to get it going on the pick and pop. Could be the remedy to Orlando’s problems offensively outside of Dwight Howard. For all that Howard complained about how Stan Van Gundy utilized him in the last series, Rashard should have a similar gripe after this game.

-Dwight Howard dropped the ball three times in the air before laying it in backwards, seriously.

-A strong argument could be made that the Cavaliers have the worst mascot in the NBA, Moondog.

-It’s scary that as bad as the Magic have played, they’re still only down 5 with 3 minutes to go in the third.

-Apparently the NBA’s zone defense rules don’t apply to Dwight Howard. I now empathize with Sixers fans around the world.

-Mickael Pietrus is getting it done. Though his numbers don’t always reflect it, he’s a glue guy and worth every penny of the mid-level exception.

-LeBron has officially reached superstar level, as seen by the phantom foul calls that he receives on occasion.

-With the Cavs up 82-78 at the start of the 4th, it appears that Van Gundy may have wanted to save himself the criticism, going to Lewis two straight times. Not coincidentally, this resulted in 2 straight buckets for the Magic.

-Hedo off of the high ball screen finally! Result: Assist to Anthony Johnson for a wide open three., which he made giving the Magic their first lead.

-If the Cavaliers lose this game, expect the streets of Cleveland to be filled with rally towels.

-Uh oh. Wally Szcerbiak is in, so expect Rashard Lewis to immediately attack him.

-Throw it anywhere near the rim and Dwight Howard is going to get it Isn’t it laughable 5 years later that there was a serious backlash over the Magic drafting him #1 ahead of Emeka Okafor?

-Superman is shutting up all of his critics that claimed he had no moves on the blocks. His offensive repertoire is reminiscent of a less smooth Patrick Ewing, minus the 20 pound knee pads.

-How about ex-Cavs third string point guard Anthony Johnson doing some serious damage against his former squad? He’s controlling the tempo of the game and taking care of the basketball at the ripe age of 34. One can only hope that we see one of his nasty running dunks that you can catch on youtube.

-Hedo is playing the point forward role to perfection, even though he only has 6 points. The Turkish pearl has 12 assists with only one turnover with 5:30 to go. If only he would stop settling for those fadeaways…

-As I type that, he drills a fadeaway three in his man’s face to put the Magic up by 3! Looks like I may want to pick a new profession.

-Now come the high ball screens for Turkoglu, about three and a half quarters late. He can get to the rim on basically anyone, regardless of size.

-LeBron James makes me often wonder if he’s ambidextrous with the off balance left-hand layups he hits on the regular.

-Rashard Lewis is shooting straight daggers. Don’t you think the Rockets are feeling a bit silly for leaving him crying in the green room back at the ’98 Draft?

-Dwight Howard has received limited touches in the fourth quarter…do I smell a call out coming?

-If anyone remembers Anderson Varejao when he played in Europe for FC Barcelona, you remember him as a pretty darn good athlete. Why now can he barely jump over a piece of paper?

-LeBron’s court vision is what sets him apart from his peers. The game that he’s having tonight is straight nasty, but knowing the competitor that LBJ is, it will mean nothing unless he walks away with the W.

-Remember those phantom calls for LeBron? How are you going to foul Dwight Howard out on a play like that where he jumped straight up and down with his arms extended? LeBron initiated all of the contact, but I guess being MVP has it’s perks here and there.

-Houston’s finest Rashard Lewis keeps shooting those daggers. This would have been completely different for Orlando had they got this guy more then five shots in the first half.

-It was an open look for Delonte, but don’t you want the MVP to take the last shot?

-While Dwight was killing early on, I’ve got to give my Co-MVP of the game award to Hedo Turkoglu with 15 points, 14 assists, and 6 rebounds with only 2 turnovers along with Rashard Lewis for being Mr. Clutch and dropping 22 and 7. LBJ finished with 49 points, 8 dimes, 6 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers on 20-30 from the field. Not much more you can ask for out of the MVP.

-On a final note, as I was walking to my car, I almost tripped over one of those lovely rally towels.

James was a BEAST last night but I’m not sure his playoff performances have been the greatest of all time, especially since the competition he has gone against in the 1st 2 rounds were less than stellar. The teams were afraid to guard James where as teams were physically beating the heck out of the likes of Jordan, Bird, Magic, Dr. J etc etc. Before we elevate players to historic levels we need to know the history. ps. I guess the Cav fans can put away the Swifter b/c there will not be a sweep. 7 game series, please…..

  • BostonBaller

Mo Evans is indeed a Hawk, he was with the Magic last year. He has also played for the Lakers, Kings and I think Detroit. I’m not sure who drafted him.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

So, I guess I’m the only person who thought the calls were sided towards the Orlando Magic, huh? The invisible bumps that were sending the magic to the foul line, the off-the-ball CHOKES and ELBOWS that were throwing Mo to the ground and turning Varejao purple… good lord.
I hope Myles comes to this thread IMMEDIATELY and sees this.
Where were all you guys when Kobe was losing to the Rockets?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I mean, you know those five times when the crowd went “ARGHHHHHHHH” right after a call was made? That was because that call was replayed on the jumbotron and the fans realized it was a BS call. I don’t think, in Cleveland, they were complaining because the Magic got cheated.
And what’s up with all this Lebron hate? The ONLY thing Lebron did wrong was not taking the final shot. I guarentee that wont happen again.
The blocks were clean (contact is allowed after the ball is thrown away from the player, and it doesn’t matter anyway since both times, Howard smacked James in the face on the way down), Lebron spent very little time driving to the basket and I think I saw one play which could be considered a travel, unlike Hedo, who pretty much just floats.
I’m upset with the loss and I think the Cavaliers played awfully, atrocious. None of them could step up? I mostly blame Mike Brown, taking Lebron out in the beginning of the fourth when the momentum was on Orlando was near inexcusable (proving Coach of the Year is a joke).
But for Lebron having one of the best playoff games, if not THE best playoff game of the season, to be given crap for this loss, man… GO back to LA, idiots.

  • knock knock

lebron faced 2 teams that if in the west, wouldn’t even be in the playoff picture. Horrible teams.

    Moose in da house.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Jukai, the oddest thing about all of this is that it is assumed that if you saw something you didn’t like out of LeBron or Cleveland, your automatically a Lakers fan (other than James the Balla). Speaking objectivley, those blocks by LeBron were mighty clean. If Varajeo wants a call, he needs to stop frigg’n acting like he’s having a cardiac arrest for every other time someone caresses his shoulder.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Oh, Spaceship Jay, totally agree. He HAS to cheat to get the calls. And I don’t really like it, because I am a Suns fan who was crippled by the Spurs who would do that all the time. I don’t know if the Cavaliers can bounce back from this, but if they do, it’s cause the Orlando Magic is gonna get into foul trouble.
Also, a lot of these cats ARE Lakers fans, Spaceship Jay, I’ve seen them post before under Kobe-Lebron debates. Not just saying that cause they’re bashing the Cavaliers.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I don’t know how people can blame Lebron for that loss for scoring 49 points on 66% shooting with eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and three blocks. Man.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

And I swear watching a NBA2K9 version of LeBron last night 20/30? Crazy. Why didn’t he take the last shots of the 4th quarter? That’s not for you to answer, but I think that he defenitley should have kept shooting and/or driving. At a time like that, the comradery is OVER.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m so confused by all of this.

  • scruffz

Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, but sometimes when I watch Cavs games and I see how that whole team acts and celebrates, I get the impression that they are pretty over-confident right now. Looks like it bit them in the a** last night.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

What the @#$% was Pietrus gonna do? Draw an offensive foul?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

That was the first loss the Cavs had had in over a month, right?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

    Spaceship Jay: I -AGREE-
I was screaching at the TV, saying “They’re ISO’ing Lebron! FREAKING SHOOT LEBRON!”
The only thing I can think of is that Lebron was legit tired and really was cramping up… but if you watch other things like his 48-point explosion against the Pistons, where he can keep playing and then collapse and not be able to move or talk… I don’t know… I don’t blame him for anything but the last shot. He should have taken the last shot.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m 1000% positive there was a series two years ago that people jumped on Lebron for not taking a potential game winning shot in the Conference Finals in a loss to the Pistons. That same year, the Cavs got to the NBA Finals. Just saying.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

So let me guess this loss means nothing right?

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Lol, that sounds like some straight-up Baptist Church-Holy Ghost stuff. “Oh, the spirit has LEFT ME!” LeBron wimpered, as he collapsed onto the hardwood, eyes flickering to the back of his head.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Nothing.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Well, actually, it guarentees the series goes six.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

I still have faith that the Cavs will take this in….5 more games.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

LeBron has surpassed Kobe. It’s over. Really, the torch has passed.

  • Eric

The Cavs matched pretty well against the Pistons. The same cannot be said about the Cavs and Magic. This was a huge win for Orlando, and if Cavs falter tomorrow night, for all intents and purposes the series is ovah!

the cavaliers have know offense i stated that all day yesterday on the other article they rely on lebron to much an he is awesome but they WONT win a championship playing like that… the cleveland team remind of the 76ers team of 2001 give to iverson get out the way, make a shot when i pass it too you

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Hmmm warr.. I never thought of it that way.

Yeah back in 2007, Bron kicked it out to Donyell Marshall in the exact same spot Lonte was last night, Marshall missed, and Bron took the game winners the rest of the way. I think he was just physically worn out and couldn’t really lift up when he left his feet (likely due to cramps) I still would’ve liked to see him shoot that Pierce style pullup that he was murdering all night. It was a tough loss, but anyone who wants to blame Bron for it is out of their freaking minds.

  • http://www.cavs.com MooButter

Will someone at SLAM please put up a slow motion video of the Lebron block on Dwight Howard. I would really like to see it again. To me, it looked like all ball. Someone posted on this article that it was all arm. How are we seeing to very different things?

  • http://www.cavs.com MooButter

Also, Lebron’s footwork in the post was fantastic. Great pivot and he jumped off that pivot foot. Not a travel, and not a “Euro 3-step.”

  • http://slam warr

i find it someone amusing of the lack of posts this morning….

Moose the only torch we can talk about today is the fact that “Green room” crybaby rashard torched “king” james’ behind.

this torch thing is overhyped. timmy is the most dominant and biggest winner of this generation so stop talking about torches when these two overhyped “greatest” players have yet to carry their teams to a chip.

you highschoolers think the game is about dunks and highlights. he who leads their team to the chips is basically the greatest. hence, timmy and then shaq comes second for this generation. til kobe or lebron do the same on their own, they are second tier in my eyes

why the hell did Dwight only have 2 Ft attempts???? Lebron with one foul? Next game Dwight better shoot at least 10 fts and the cavs need to start using their fouls…

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

We should have fouled when we were up 2 with 25 seconds to go.

  • breeze

he 24 no excuse to be tired im sorry….this is your job and you had a crazy layoff…no excuse…he did no more than kobe and melo and they didnt fall apart like the ginger bread man

  • Eric

Breeze, who said Lebron was tired? Cramps don’t equal tiredness. And he did do more than Kobe and Melo. The difference is that the Lakers and Nuggets helped their star players. Going down the stretch the Cavaliers did not. That is all.

  • breeze

they called a timeout because he was looking worn out…then the cramps came….and what game did you see when the lakers helped kobe..yeah fisher 2 three ariza steal and three..no diffrent from delonte west and joe smith output….dont you dare blame this on the cavs..the issue is while lebron holding the ball the all watching him liek we are at home …what are you gonna do …if this was a game of hot potatoe he would lose EVERYTIME…

  • Eric

“they called a timeout because he was looking worn out…then the cramps came” Or he cramps and Mike Brown just thinks it was because James was tired. And correct me if I’m wrong, but it was commentators who said he was tired.

I assume that the they that you say were just standing around is the Cavs? If it is shouldn’t they(the Cavs) be blamed for just standing around? And obviously what Fisher and Ariza did was different since what they did led to a win.

Bottom line, to me, is that LeBron played an absolutely magnificent game on his home court…and lost. The Magic aren’t just gonna roll over and die. (Also, Doug Collins may as well wear a WITNESS shirt for the rest of the series. He was seriously f*cking embarassing last night.)

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

This report was truly non-partisan. That’s some amazing objectivity for someone who apparently dwells in one of the cities being represented in the ECF. Hats off on this recap.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Cramps are usually due to a lactic acid build-up, which comes 90% of the time from tiredness. So, yes, in this case, the cramps were from tiredness.

  • Eric

Hursty,90% of the time doesn’t equal 100% of the time.
