Cavs/Magic Game 3 Recap

Cleveland needs a solution. And fast.

by Todd Spehr

Can you win a series despite being outplayed in each of the first three games? Cleveland’s going to find out.

Not quite sure what the saddest part about Game 3 was from the Cavs’ point of view: That Dwight Howard basically didn’t play in the first half (Marcin Gortat kindly gave us 17 minutes of his time); that Anderson Varejao did a better job of annoying himself than he did Howard; that four of Cleveland’s starters had four or more fouls, with two fouling out; that the backcourt combo of Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston had identical output to Delonte West and Mo Williams; that LeBron James had 41 of their 89, got to the line 24 times, and probably had an “average” outing; or just the fact they’re down 2-1 and were one landmark play from being in an insurmountable hole.

It’s probably unfair to make this all about Cleveland because Orlando has been really good. The Magic have responded to, for lack of a better term, the bad stuff (like deficits, or foul trouble) better than the Cavs.

Just for something different, it was Orlando who opted for a first-half, double-digit lead in Game 3 (16-6), but Cleveland reeled that back in and led 41-40 at the half. The core of the Cavs’ being in the LeBron Era is holding opponents in the low 90s, and the pace suited. But in the second half it was Orlando. The Magic shot 35 free throws in the second half, and their superior depth showed. And when things got a little chippy, a little physical, they seemed to only get better.

Howard got his 24 on eight shots, took 15 free throws after halftime, and his night’s work consisted of little more than a half. Hedo Turkoglu made one field goal yet flirted with a triple-double. If there’s such a thing as the Dominique Wilkins theory, it’s that if you can’t make a shot from the field, you get your points at the line. Turkoglu did that. Mickael Pietrus, though you wouldn’t know it, has been darn-near pivotal since the clincher at Philly in round one. Sure, his defensive prowess might be a little overrated (in an Ariza kinda way), but he’s athletic, he has showed up for every important Orlando game in the postseason (not to say there’s an unimportant playoff game, but you know what I’m saying), and he had 16 big points Sunday.

Keep in mind, this is an Orlando team that just dusted off the defending champs, swept the season series with the Lakers, and has won four of six against their conference finals opponent in 2009, including outplaying the Cavs in Cleveland, where they lost just twice all year. People keep talking about how Orlando’s not respected, how could they possibly be disrespected now? Not only do they have an All-NBA center, but because they have essentially two shooting small forwards, they cause weird mismatches, spread the floor, and aren’t exactly punished on the other end as Cleveland doesn’t have a scorer over 6-10. It’s exactly the type of team that can – correction: do – cause the Cavs trouble.

Cleveland needs to make an adjustment. Somewhere. And preferably before the end of the series.

To say Mo Williams left his jumper in Cleveland would be wrong. He didn’t have it there. And it’s not in Atlanta, because he didn’t have it there, either. Really, Williams hasn’t seen the thing in about three weeks. But he probably would want to find it soon; he was 5-for-16 on Sunday, his night more notable for head-butting Anthony Johnson’s elbow and his subsequent “bigger fish to fry” post-game chirp.

LeBron’s amazing series, where he’s dropping nearly 42-7-5 nightly, is in part due to Williams’ offensive ineptitude. But that ineptitude doesn’t roll one-deep – a fact further enhanced in Game 3. West has struggled with his shot, ditto for Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and that so-called deeper rotation was good for more fouls (10) than points (8) on Sunday. Teams usually buckle at the sight of a defining effort from James; if anything, Orlando has welcomed it. They’re almost “Nash-ing” LeBron – you get yours, we’ll shut down the others.

But remember, it’s only 2-1. Cleveland is a win from getting home court back, but also one loss from near-extinction. This is the NBA, and it’s the playoffs; adjustments are made, things are tweaked. But how about Cleveland just finding their swagger? As silly as it sounds, where is that “stupid” confidence they exhibited all year? Not just when LeBron is snapping fake pictures of his scrubs prior to games, but that arrogance they played with in the opening rounds. They need that back. We know what LeBron is bringing – he’s scored 43% of his team’s points through three games – it’s the supporting cast that needs to man up. It’s either that, or a 3-1 ditch.

scary how orlando is winning basically without superman in this series…
the nashing reference is spot on.

  • neaorin

The saddest part is that nobody except LeBron is playing right now.

  • D12FSU

do people still not understand that ORLANDO IS SIMPLY THE BETTER TEAM! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • http://nba.com Reflex

    ” it was Orlando who opted for a first-half, double-digit lead in Game 3 (16-6) ”
Small typo, presumably you meant quarter instead of half.

As I said elsewhere, The Magic have somehow become my favourites to win the whole thing, just think, the Cavs were one buzzer beater from potentially being swept in the ECFs, who would have seen that coming?!

  • D12FSU

and btw, orlando had the 41-40 lead at halftime….not the Lebron’s

  • http://www.slamonline.com Justin Walsh

solid recap. I honestly think we could have a Lakers Magic finals. And that would be the most exciting matchup.

  • http://slamonline.com Todd Spehr

@ Reflex – No, I meant first half lead. Cleveland did it in each of the first two games.

@ D12FSU – Nope, Cavs up at the half.

  • http://slamonline.com Todd Spehr

Actually, ESPN has Orlando up 42-41 at the half; Yahoo has Cleveland up 41-40. I need to check the tape.

  • D12FSU

are you sure? might wanna check your math. http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=290524019 thats the link to the box score, Cavs scored 17 then 24 =41, Magic scored 24 then 18 = 42…..so really we were both wrong, but still Magic had +1 at the half…also i clearly remember watching Gortat (aka THE POLISH HAMMER) miss two free throws, and saying d@mn, that woulda given us a 3 point lead

  • Phil Dailey

Da SternBot somewhere is on da phone to the powers …that Be so if say the Cav’s get to the line nextgame & they do win game4 well their yea know, cause its all bout the mighty , money what sells largemarket team vs—small market team thats the American Dream coming from no-where & make it, da Under–dogg.

  • Prison Mike

I read somewhere that Stern isn’t concerned about match ups as much as everyone thinks. The NBA already gets paid from their contract with ABC, ESPN, and TNT. It’s the tv stations that worry about ratings.

  • so so geoff

mickael and marcin = pietrus and cream
    LOL

  • knock knock

CLEARLY from watching the game, the refs are taking this the hardest. They were ONE call away from getting the cavs back in the ball game. Lets see if they rebound in game 4 and win the game for cleveland.

  • ABIMATOR

    Great analysis Todd

  • http://www.blacknaga.com sherman johnson

i got called “stupid” and even got called out of my name by somebody too illiterate to even leave theirs for questioning Cleveland’s bench in the first round against Detroit when the Pistons’ bench came back from twenty some odd points like the Magic did in the first two games of this series. The kid who called me stupid was quoting numbers from 2007 and referring to players on the bench who have yet to step up.

So my question now again is where’s the Cleveland’s bench?

  • http://www.commuto.com steve

Prison Mike – Stern is concern. If not for the current contract he has with the tv stations but for the renewal. If the stations get high rating then the NBA gets to negotiate for an increase once this contract is over. If the stations don’t, well then…

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Well if worse comes to worse we could always present the larry o brien, bill russell and the newly minted greatest ever award to lebron at his house? He still gets all those things right?

  • http://slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/fear/ Freedom Fries

Ok here it is – LA vs. Magic game 6, in a heated battle both KB and Howard pick up their 7th technical and have to sit out game 7 – - – — ohhhh DRAMA

  • AlbertBarr

Realy, for me, the most impressive part about last night magic win was how Howard knocked down his free throws. I think he was like 11-15 or something? For Howard that is REAL good and it helped the Magic ice the victory in the fourth …I think over the summer Howard will develop some better offense/work in his free throws and is going to be even more dominant. In general, the Magic just look like the better team and the hungrier team and the tougher team mentally. Cavs are going to have to gut check and hope they find the will to compete.

  • Hawkfan

Mo Williams is a bum…cant shoot, cant guard, and cant create for teammates. I remember earlier this year when he did his TMobile “Fave 5″ clutch shooters and he picked himself. I dont recall him ever hitting a big time shot, and yet he has the attitude that he is an elite player that has established himself for a decade. This is the first year he has done anything, and it took a pity vote from David Stern to pick him as Lebron’s sidekick in the all-star game after 3 players bowed out due to injury. Most overrated player in the league, hands down!

  • Jacob

just think if lebron missed that shot in game 2, we’d have a 3-0 magic lead now, lebron needs to get his help from everyone else (im looking at you mo, big z, delonte, sasha, varajiao, etc.) if they want to win this series, its starting to look like the magic are going to take this is 5 or 6, and if lebron doesnt get his help the magic will win this in 5 or 6

  • Stan

Lebron looked very tired half way through the 4th quarter, he can certainly not drive and dunk all game but you almost don’t see that happen to MJ when he was playing. Lebron is just 24 right? If petrius just allowed mo to receive the ball near half court in game 2 this would have been a 3-0 series. I want the Magic to win just so Lebron can move to NY, along with Amare =)

  • George B

somebody forgot to tell the magic that lebron is suppossed to play kobe in june.

  • Kas

stan, what the hell do you need amar’e for?

  • bill breedley

The King without a Ring was exposed as a farce when all the face powder fluff he likes playing with in the start of games cleared up. Without David Stern’s help even Fat boy Paul Pierce is better.

The King without a Ring is a farce, exposed to be as poor a teammate as Kobe with his “clone” himself garbage. Two Lebrons would have too big an ego to agree to even play on the same court at the same time. Sorry Lebron jockers, your boy is a bigger farce than Kobe. He is an egomaniac and douche like Kobe and MJ before them.

  • bill breedley

…so much for “Lebron makes his teammates better”. Dude should trust his teammates and set them up so they gain confidence in the end. He should pace and not think about topping Kobe’s 41 the day before. This is not an alpha dog contest, this is the conference finals. Memo to the King without a ring, you are lucky to not be down 3-0.

“Not just when LeBron is snapping fake pictures of his scrubs prior to games”
    puahahaha
    come to chicago, lebron

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Denver and Orlando in the finals. There is no king in cleveland. The king is dead.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!!

Jacob, are you gonna be saying that when Denver is down 3-1?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Did you guys even watch the game!? Saying that LeBron didn’t set his teammates up when he watched Z and Mo miss countless wide open jumpers is RIDICULOUS. Breedley, you were on his back for precisely not being an alpha dog and now you’re saying that LeBron doesn’t trust his teammates. If anything, he trusts them too much! After a Cleveland loss, the Cleveland haters show up. After a LA loss, the Lakers haters show up. It’s tiring. Yeah, the Magic are a problem to Cleveland. They have no answer in their frontcourt for Shard and they can’t go that small because their 3 is 6’10. Mo Williams is shooting below 33% and Boobie is nowhere to be found, Wally is too slow to play. However, they win tomorrow and it’s back at square 1. LeBron wasn’t the best player in the history of the L after last game and he doesn’t suck after this game. Perspective, folks. He’s AVERAGING 35-9 and 7 in the playoffs. Can’t be that bad, eh?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’m done with the comments. I don’t have time for this. The actual articles are enough for me since nothing substantial ever comes out of the comments.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Nice recap, Todd. First of all, the Magic give any team in the league matchup problems. Its scary. And as bi polar as SVG may be, hes still the best coach in the league as far as scouting, preparation and establishing/executing a gameplan. Hes certainly outcoaching the Coach of the Year (HA.) and sending him scrambling for adjustments that simply arent possible. Even if he puts Bron on Shard, Wally, Delonte or Sasha cant eff with Hedo. And then theres Pietrus and Lee who are far too athletic for any of the Cavs either. This is all beside the fact that Dwight Howard is unstoppable when hes making his FT like last night. (Charles Barkley….) And first of all, despite the matchup problems theyre facing in this series, the Cavs are simply overrated. Deabte til your blue in the face about whether Bron is better than basketball itself, his team performed poorly against the leagues elite this year. They lost 3 of 4 to the Magic, both games against the Lakers and I believe they split with the Celtics. Those are the teams theyd face en route to a championship and the Pistons and Hawks may as well have been a first and second round bye. I know I wasnt the only one referencing last years Laker team when watching the Cavs easily handle teams that shouldnt even be in the playoffs. That doesnt build the mental toughness and mettle needed to grit your way to a title when trouble inevitably shows up. And just like the C’s of last year, the Magic had that grit by pushing their way through two close and character building series. I still have no idea why people were bold enough to pick the Cavs in 5 despite all evidence to the contrary. This was on of the most overrated 66 win teams in history. And for that reason I have to say I hope they do win this series, because if the Lakers do make the Finals, the Magic very well may beat them too.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!!

If the magic win the finals, the world will implode.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!!

And there still will be someone whining on the commments board.

  • http://jakeandamir.com tealish

Agreed with Myles about SVG. He’s pretty damn underrated. Sorry, Shaq.

  • Bruno, RJ

my last comment should be on quotes.
and by the way… F…Lebron Up.
    .
funny how when the cavs have the best record, Lebron is god and the other players “helps a little”.
now, when they lose, Lebron is still god and the rest is losing the games for them.
    hahahahahhaha
how about all the 5 or 6 freebis that he misses on the 4th quarter? how about the almost airball FT(again).
Lebron is putting number cause he is CLEARLY protected and he is throwing every ball up, but he is taking his team’s soul away.
    like it or not.

And the room service in the ATL can’t make any money since everybody was cooking on the street. They were cooking ribs and fried chicken and fish sandwiches. Lord have mercy, those fish sandwiches were good! And if you hurt yourself eating the fish sandwiches don’t worry about it because the paramedics are standing by.

They got a lot of hip-hop music playing but I’m still doing the bump and the four corners but I don’t want to sweat too much because girls don’t want to dance with guys who sweat too much. I don’t want the Chocolate to melt. Can’t be Fe-Fi-Fo-Funky.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.
And that is why I succeed.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

We would be very welcoming to you in New York, LeBron.

  • Nawlins Realest.

I agree with whoever said Mo was the most overrated player EVER. I still remember when he guaranteed during the Celebrity All Star Game that they would be in the finals…..This guy wouldnt be anywhere if it wasnt for lebron.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Fouling Dwight out on that block was vile.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    Myles and everyone, basically.
I think everybody is underestimating the importance of match ups in the playoffs. Cleveland is still an elite team. They just don’t match up very well with Orlando. Same thing with LA who had match up problems with Houston. Orlando got pushed to 7 by a Celtics team sans Garnett which the Cavs would have trounced so they’re not invincible or anything. Maybe I’m insane but I believe that Orlando is actually the toughest draw for the Cavs out of all the remaining teams. Their bigs just arent mobile enough and it’s showing. Okay, now I’m done. And I love how Myles take those thinly veiled shots at Bron, well done. Were you suggesting that his team were having trouble against the NBA elite because of his performance? That would be pretty bold. Okay, done for real now. Peace.

  • AlbertBarr

That block was epic…I really cant beleive it was called as a foul…

  • Stan

Lebron needs Amare with him because having a verajao and an ilgauskas is not enough to win him a championship. The knicks could pick between bosh and Amare but i’d go with Amare. Howard always goes to his right for a hook shot so the Cavs need to double on that side.

  • that dude

Dwight did well passing out of the double team instead of fighting it like game 2. And Courtney Lee is that dude!

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

why does Bron get off easy? you guys remember when Kobe had no teammates in 06? he still went up 3-1 and blew it. He got killed. LeBron has way more talent on his team, still putting up awesome numbers like Kobe, but he’s still losing. I’m putting this on him. He can’t will his team to victory. and man lebron, can you make a jump shot?
that 3 was lucky as hell in game2. we all know that

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Z – I think myles was just saying that cleveland struggle all year against the leagues elite because, they aren’t as good as them. Sure if your going to pick the leagues 4 best teams you can’t have a problem with saying that Cleveland are 4th. You have the Lakers, then Orlando, then the Celtics with a healthy Garnett and then Cleveland. It’s that easy. Cleveland won’t get to the NBA finals this year and it’s simply because they are a one man team at the end of the day.
