Celtics/Magic Game 4 Recap

The “What If” factor.

by Sammy Newman-Beck and Andrew Beck

1986—The Boston Celtics win their 16th championship going away, dominating the Ralph Sampson led Houston Rockets. It’s June and the weather in Boston is beautiful.

Life is good.

The Bird Era is set to continue the run of the NBA’s champion of all champions—Red sitting smoking his stogie and the Celts have the 2nd pick in the Draft due to a trade of Gerald Henderson (the father, not the son). Waiting in the wings is Len Bias, a 6-8 Michael Jordan, a ferocious man with a jumper and elevation that can’t be created only imagined. What would that look like? Bird, McHale, Parrish, DJ, Danny and Len Bias. Oh my, another five or six championships added to the rafters. Good night NBA.

A day later, a dollar short. Len Bias is dead. Cocaine intoxication; tragedy strikes. A nightmare on Causeway street. Go back to sleep Celtics. Bird gets hurt, McHale breaks his foot. Days drift into years. Rick Pitino comes to save the day. Larry bird ain’t walking through that door. Maybe Tim Duncan will. Celts have two of the top six picks in 1996?

Visions of dunce starting the championship engine drift into Boston, but the nightmare won’t end. Tim Duncan in green? Not in this lifetime—green as in dollars maybe, but not in Celtics. More “what ifs.” More  losses. Twenty year’s worth.

Until KG, PP and Ray Ray. One can’t help but wonder…

This is a game of “What Ifs.” What If Shaq stayed in Orlando? What If Doc Rivers never left Orlando as a coach? What If Len Bias never passed? We wouldn’t be sitting here watching the Celtics with the Big 3 (and I don’t mean Pierce, Ray and Rondo). The Celtics would have won in the 90s. Rick Pitino would still be coaching in the NBA.

– What If the Celtics had Tim Duncan and not “The Truth”?
– What If KG won in Minnesota?
– What If Pierce went Big Babyout last year in the Playoffs when he hurt his knee?
– What If Jameer Nelson wasn’t injured. What if KG was healthy?
– What if Rajon Rondo never developed?
– What if my last post about Game 7 Celtics vs. Bulls was about a C’s loss?
– What if Big Baby didn’t hit that jumper last night?

What If the Celtics lost last night? The NBA Playoffs wouldn’t be quite as exciting for sure. The Celtics with a loss last night would be done, season over, nada mas. On a night where every Boston-bread sports team took home a victory. “Nothing Is Impossible” was last year.

This year: “What If.”

Motto Of The Night (quoted by Doc Rivers): “Trust The Pass.”

SIDEBAR: How bad were the refs last night? And I still believe Joe Crawford has major ego problems.

^Stupid Comment. Great shot by Big Baby.

“How bad were the refs last night?” That should be the motto of this year’s playoffs.

  • AlbertBarr

“What If” the Refs knew how to call a game.

    Umm….OK….big win.

    big baby = conceited
kg says rawr @ big baby = big baby =’(

  • Tommy Patron

I wonder if some of the Celtics will realize they’ve become big phonies once KG is gone.

So happy for Big Baby. And Doc for that matter, dude is real and he lives and dies with his squad. And Baby nearly bowling that kid over and not looking back was hilarious!
Did anyone get the license plate on that truck that just ran me over? Dayum!

Oh, and Joey Crawford is a piece of sh1t. The league needs to clean out some of the dinosaurs they’ve got reffing games.
Anyone else think that too many of these refs have “dirt” on Stern or “The League” so they can’t ust be replaced?

  • that dude

Joey Crawford looks like a clown out there, you really get the feeling he’s a psychopath

THIS IS THE WORST GAME RECAP EVER

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Yeah thats rather true, Miguel Garcia of Mexico. I couldn’t tell from this recap the winning margin or any of the actual details in the game denoting a RECAPPING of sorts, other than this sentance …”What If the Celtics lost last night? The NBA Playoffs wouldn’t be quite as exciting for sure…”.

All I can say is someone took the lazy road out before hitting hooters for a beer and peanuts.

  • chintao

Easy guys. I think that the Beck boys probably assume that most people saw the game. Besides, you can go anywhere to get that information. We need something a little different here.

  • BostonBaller

What if …What if Any Thing is Possible still applies to my Celtics? I believe.

ps..I know that a lot of people think the C’s are a favorite of the League office and has been since the dawn of time but the Tim Duncan draft proved otherwise..What better odds were there than to have two of the top six picks in 1996 draft? No one could have said there was a fix but we didn’t get that pick did we. lol

Now things will heat up. lol

CHINTAO… If most people saw the game… (I can easily say the majority of Australia didn’t) then what is the need for a recap? This wasn’t a recap in any event and it took two people to prepare? I say they went for the hooters/peanuts option.

  • chintao

Fair enough, Dacre. Seeing as how these guys didn’t even bother to step-up and defend themselves, I guess I have to admit I am wrong. I will say, however, that a recap can be many things. For instance, it could be a recap of things that went on during the game, but which are unrelated to what actually went down on the court. One of the things that I like about SLAM is that the writers usually put alot of themselves into their work. That makes it more like sitting around, talking ball with friends. Still, I can appreciate that people may have seen this as lazy and/or misleading.
