Lakers/Nuggets Game 1 Recap

The Nuggets were ready to steal home-court.

by John Krolik

-The Nuggets came out with the kind of run that usually decided the game in the Lakers-Rockets series, getting out of the gate to the tune of a 10-2 run. But the Nuggets aren’t as good, or at least as committed, of a defensive team as the Rockets, and this is going to be much more of a series of runs than Lakers-Rockets was, where both teams were playing downhill.

The Lakers come out providing extreme help on Billups to trap him on pick-and-rolls and take their chances with the Nuggets bigs, neither of whom have any sort of discernible range. Both Nugget bigs ended up adjusting, with K-Mart employing some sort of bizarre floater-type shot from about a step inside the free throw line that somehow goes in without ever seeming to go above the rim. Nene, meanwhile, makes hard cuts for two dunks and a layup in the first quarter while the rotating defender employs a defensive strategy best described as “contemplative.” I’m going with Nene as the most underrated player in the playoffs right now-nobody really understands how important of a skill it is for big men to finish when they get the ball around the basket, and Nene does it as well as anybody.

-The Nuggets absolutely dominate the first quarter, but two quick threes from the Lakers, a missed open look from three by Chauncey Billups, and two free-throw misses from Billups allow the Lakers to finish the quarter only down by 8. Failure to close out quarters will, to put it mildly, become a theme for the Nuggets.

-Kobe doesn’t appear to have it going-the looks are better and he’s getting to his “happy spots” from 13-15 more, but it’s a lot of fadeaways he’s not able to step into. Meanwhile, Carmelo Anthony is absolutely immolating.

-Even Anthony Carter is doing a decent job on Kobe-Kobe wants to back him into the post, but Carter is keeping him far enough away so that he can’t get an easy shot. Anthony Carter must be STRONG.

-The Nuggets get a little stagnant, and a Fisher three allows the Lakers to steal the half and go in up by one even though the Nuggets executed much better.

-The second half is where things start to get physical. The Lakers, to their credit, are taking the ball to the basket, but the Nuggets are right there to meet them and the refs aren’t doing them any favors. Meanwhile, the Lakers are picking up cheap fouls left and right. The crowd is getting antsy.

-Gasol is, once again, just not getting it done when they go to him for a back-down, but he’s a monster on the offensive boards and is getting his that way, even with every rebound becoming an absolute battle.

-You know how some things look really weird at first, but over time they become completely normal and you can’t even remember how it looked before, like with Kobe wearing 24? Kenyon Martin’s “lips” tattoo is not one of those things.

-Someone tell J.R. Smith that nothing good happens when he puts the ball on the floor.

-Kobe on Billups: an absolutely amazing decision. He’s not going to beat you with his speed, so there’s no reason not to put a bigger guy on him if he can stay out of foul trouble.

-Kobe’s getting his, but he’s working for them. Then again, maybe the most amazing thing about Kobe is how you can watch him and think he doesn’t have it that night, then you look up and he’s already got 28.

-Every time the Nuggets threaten to pull away in the fourth, the Nuggets come up with an empty possession or Kobe wills in a basket. Denver fans must have their hearts in their throat.

-And then, the stretch. Everything Denver has to do to win this series and was doing for the first 3.75 quarters of the game completely breaks down for them when it matters most.

Kobe, who’s been made to work, sticks a jumper and finds a wide-open Derek Fisher for a three. 5-0 Laker run, 1-point Laker lead.

Carmelo commits the charge, his lone moment of humanity in an absolutely amazing game.

After Chauncey drills a huge three and Gasol clanks two free throws, the Nuggets fail to grab the offensive rebound and give up two more Gasol free throws, which he makes.

In a tie game with a minute left, the Birdman ends up taking the shot, and Odom forces a tie-up on the loose ball and wins an absolutely massive jump-ball.

Kobe misses the jumper-if the Nuggets grab the ball, they have the chance to get a possession off and give the Lakers 12 seconds to either win or tie. But with Martin boxing his man out 10 feet away instead of going for the board, Billups has to try and leap over Gasol for the rebound and tips the ball out of bounds.

On the second-chance, Martin gives a stupid reach-in foul to put Kobe on the line. You hate to see the refs decide things in such a crucial moment, but K-Mart had his hand in the cookie jar.

Anthony Carter throws away the inbounds pass, and then tries to make up for it by trying to pick Kobe off the dribble. Kobe blows by him, gets hammered, and drills two more free throws to put the Lakers up 4 and 2 more after a Billups three to ice it, and grabs the game-ending rebound. Free throws and rebounds aren’t the most spectacular way to close out a game, but Mamba certainly got it done.

The Nuggets definitely showed they were game, but with Phil’s track record after winning the first game and the feeling the Lakers absorbed the Nuggets’ best shot and got the win, this looks like a very bad omen for Denver. But if there’s anything we’ve learned from these playoffs, especially when the Lakers are involved, it’s not to look too deeply into one game. A lot of pressure is on Denver, but this series has all the makings of a classic based on how these teams bring out the best in each other.

Whoever was a Laker fan that spoke poorly of Derek Fisher and his ability previously need to all shut the fu*k up and go away forever. Around here, that’s all of you (every one), so this place should be that much more enjoyable.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

DFish was still like 2-7. The two he hit were HUGE, but Farmar and Shannon Brown arguably played just as well, if not better.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I remember Fish hitting critical J’s and taking a charge that stopped a run, Farmar and Brown, not so much.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Derek fisher shoots some bad shots sometimes. And the one beef I have with the lakers is from the 4th when they didn’t go to kobe on like 5 straight possesions even though denver had a lead. The masheen was the most guilty of looking kobe off a few times to take bad contested shots.

  • http://slam warr

YOU DONT EVEN KNOW ME AND UR MAD HOW IT FEEL TO BE A HATER NOW I KNOW EXACTLY HOW IT FEEL TO BE A LAKER

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Farmar and Shannon Brown hit back to back threes that capped a nice run by their bench and got the Lakers back in the game during that second quarter. They, admittdly, weren’t nearly as big, momentum wise, as the two Fisher hit, but I don’t think DFish’s performance was anything for Laker fans to be excited about.

Zee, Kenyon is not an offensive-minded player (his game is built off offensive rebounds, lobs and interior feeds.) JR’s game is all about “from inside half-court and in.”
When his mid-range game (it does come out every once in a while)is on, he becomes borderline, unstoppable. He’s one of the few guys in the league that i would use that term for, as well.

It just doesn’t happen enough for him to be a All-Star-caliber, prominent player….. yet.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I LOVE JR Cub, and I hype him at pretty much every chance I get but I can’t even really defend his performance last night. Some of those TOs were SO effing bad, he tried to do too much once he got the ball, rather than just rise up and shoot (which we know is what he’s best at and exactly what he wants to do). His D against Kobe was probably the best part of his game last night, which is beyond shocking.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

This game showed why Kobe is the best in the league right now. Kobe willed his team to victory, while expending energy on defense shutting down Billups in the first half and holding down Melo in the second half, that is the MVP and to the Nuggets fans are yall stupid, this is one of the better played game by the Nuggets, only person who did not play well is J.R. Smith-who cares about him. Let him shoot yall out of games, also Melo was on fire and yall still lost, this game is telling, I have said since the Lakers beat Rockets, Lakers in 5. Kobe is doing work.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

…and personally I liked Kmart’s offensive game last night. He attacked the rim consistently (the bang on Powell was RIDIC) and I’d rather him shoot those weird one handed flosters than his, equally ugly, midrange jumper.

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

That was NOT Denver’s best game. JR was non-existent, and Kleiza wasn’t even there, really. Nene in foul trouble hurt…if JR hits for his normal 16-18 off the bench, or IF THE NUGGETS HIT FREE THROWS…they’d have won easily.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Uh, not sure if you were actually watching the game Seed, but Melo ate kobe’s lunch last night on both sides of the floor. Kobe’s line only looks as good as it does because of how many times he got to the line in the fourth.

oh, and when all time an Laker great, Ex-GMs who even drafted Kobe, are saying that LeBron has passed Kobe up, its time to give it a rest. You can obviously think whatever you want but Kobe didn’t prove anything as far as being better than bron bron last night.

  • breeze

@cub j.r might be border line unstoppable but thats against everyone except his self for every good shot he shoots 3 bad ones , in which you cant do against the lakers. if anyone thinks teh lakers are in trouble this series after taking nearly the hardest blow melo can deliver and the rest of the nuggets you are quite fooled. gasol did not have an productive game niether did odom , and i guess chancey really didnt either but if it comes down to melo vs kobe mamba wins everytime!!!

  • http://nbainchina.com NBA China

Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Andrew Brynum could be the scariest frontcourt in NBA history..instead they keep embarrassing themselves getting scored on by the likes of Houston and Denver frontcourt nobodies.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Dumbies, Melo ate Ariza up, Kobe put work on him in the 4th, Lebron only rebounds better and has to pass in his offense to get his guys going. Kobe doesn’t have to pass or rebound in his offense, it call the triangle offense for a reason, Kobe goal is to mainly score and facilate the offense. Jerry West is old and dumb, how you think we got PAU GASOL. I like his statement-gives Kobe more fuel to DO WORK!!!

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Eboy, if you had a tv in the last few months you would understand why Lakers fan’s are/were mad at Fish for his shot selection, his horrible fg%, and the fact that compiled that with terrible defense. His shots were big last night, but before he started wetting from behind the arc, he was 2-7. And was shooting barely 30 percent in the previous series. Farmar and Brown hit a few buckets at different intervals which kept the game from ballooning in the 3rd quarter. I still think Fish needs to find more of a consistent shot for the Lakers to spread the floor more, and have a better chance at winning. Otherwise Denver is gonna keep camping in the paint.

@Cub, I hear ya about J.R.’s ability to get hot. I just think you have to make sure that he’s accounted for and play somewhat tougher D than New Orleans and Dallas, it was like they were telling themselves: “ok he’s gonna miss this one, no wait, this one”. I just think that the Lakers will at least ATTEMPT to contest him a bit more than the previous series, but if he’s gonna get his maybe the Lakers should let him get his and focus on everyone else. Oh to be Phil Jackson.

  • Michael

As a huge Laker fan, i think Denver is a better team than the Lakers right now. Bynum doesn’t have his timing back and Odom is obviously hampered by his back. But that doesn’t mean Denver will win this series.

I actually agree with Bill Simmons, It comes down to wether or not Pau can play well.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Zee, you know less than nothing, but it’s all good. Your team won.

  • breeze

@mike i dot agree that denver is a better team..its a diffrent when you playingwith momentum and just being plain better. if i ask you was denver a better team be for the la vs rockets series i bet you answer would have been diffrent…the dallas mavs are not the rockets and especially is not the lakers ..the game is about match ups period..and none of those teams that the nuggets played possesed a dominate shooting gaurd. mamba wins !!!

  • http://slamonline.com tina

So if a player goes to the line for some of their points their numbers don’t count?

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

If you could kill any Laker without getting caught, who would it be?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Hmmmm tough question Anton. Probably Masheen. Maybe Kobe, nah too obvious. But honestly the question should be which SLAMonline Laker Stan would I kill?

  • tweaks

It’s funny but…to me it looked like the lakers were only a bit taken by surprise by the nugget rythm….however…now that they adjusted to their system and they got their Rocket-system out of their soulders sort to speak….i just can’t imagine anything else than Lakers in 6………..easy

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

Do people forget that JR, Kleiza, and Chauncey (for the most part) didn’t do anythign last night? The lakers had a tough time in the paint, and if Denver can eliminate the paint for the lakers, Denver can still pull this thing off. If they come home 1-1, look out! If they come home down 2-0, it would take a huge turnaround to stretch the series. Denver is tougher at home than the Lakers are right now. Game 2 will be huge.

  • Michael

The Lakers are not better than Denver. Denver has better players, they’re more athletic, and just tougher. Denver did exactly what they did in the previous two series. They controled the games on the road but lost in the last couple of minutes. At home they dominated.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Eboy, another witless yet classic response. And you wonder why people question your sense, but it’s ok your team is at home.

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

GOOD POST FROM ESPN: Denvers in Great shape. LA has played 4 bad games in the playoffs and Denver has played 0 bad games. LA has proven to be inconsistent and that will cost them this series. You are what you are. Two of Denver top scorers had bad nights JR smith and Billups and a ball throw away with less than 30 seconds left and 12 missed free throws and LA gets out at home by 2. LA is happy to beat this team period but Denver is in the driver seat. Kobe has not had back to back great games in the playoffs so expect a 7-30 game on thursday and Denver to win by double digits.

  • Michael

I hate that agrument. If thats the case, then the Lakers won a game where neither Pau, Lamar oy Bynum did a thing.

This series can go 1 of three ways.

1.These teams are reallt this evenly matched and it’s going 7 and someone will win

2.Phil was right about the Lakers not really Knowing what to expect from Denver and that the Lakers were going to have to play on energy and emotion. Once the Lakers get a chance to look at tape and see what happened on the floor they’ll make adjustments and roll Denver

3.Game two goes exactly the same whay as game 1 but Denver doesn’t blow the game and they go home and roll the Lakers and close it out in 5 or 6.

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

    Have to wait and see.

  • illydiva

Sucked that the Nuggs couldn’t pull this one out, but did anyone else hear that Brian Grant has Parkinson’s disease?

  • bigdoggchad

@Michael That’s what they are saying it was more shocking that Smith and Billups had a bad game because they have been more consistent. Bad games from Pau, Lamar, and Bynum are more common. Especially from Lamar and Bynum think they have had 5 good games combined in the playoffs.

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

    b. Grant and Michael J. Fox can hang out together now.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

    Nuggets got next 4 games.

  • Steve

that was FAR from nuggets “at their best”, watch what they play like at home, its just insanity how they feed off that crowd

Melo has the best supporting cast of any superstar left (him, lebron, kobe, dwight) and it isnt even close

I think Kobe has the worst, he doesnt have one guy in that lineup that can create their own shot from the wing or perimeter, and sure he has a good post-up presence and probably the best 2ndbestplayer in Gasol (him or Billups) but the other teams have more weapons than just two

Bynum a weapon? If you consider Kendrick Perkins a weapon……..

Odom a weapon? He doesnt even start. Same with Farmar, the only other guy that can create besides Odom and theyre BOTH on the bench. if either one started(Farmar over fisher or odom over ariza) the lakers would be unbeatable

Ariza and Fisher are defenders and spotup shooters, and ariza isnt even a GOOD shooter.

Then look at the nuggets. Kenyon Martin, former allstar, great 4th best player. Chauncey billups, champion, all-nba pointguard, top-3 pg in the league undoubtedly, can create for himself and others, Nene in the post as efficient and good as Pau Gasol but doesnt get nearly as many touches, reminds me of Big Z or Sheed when he gave a damn, plus the bench is GREAT, absolutely GREAT

Lebron has Delonte and Mo that can both create their own shots, plus has the best defense of any team left helping him, and Big Z in the post averaging as much production-per-minute and efficiency as Yao Ming, plus dpoy anchor in Ben Wallace and mad mad mad shooters, another former allstar in Wally off the bench too, heck Pavlovic was a starter for their nba finals team and he cant even crack rotation now

Dwight has Rashard and Hedo, two allstars, and then Courtney Lee can create his own shot, Rafer can too and can create for others, plus a GREAT bench and lots of shooters…… if they had Jameer too instead of Rafer? WOW they’d kill it, but Rafer is still really good and can step up.

Celtics would have the best supporting cast of all if KG never got injured.

Kobe needs help. Odom or Farmar needs to start or at least play alot more alongside gasol-bynum-kobe and give them another playmaker/creator from the wing

Melo has the best supporting cast by far. I actually think Kobe has the worst supporting cast, but COULD have the best if it was utilized properly.

  • Steve

this years lakers remind me of last years celtics
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
they need to find themselves though, and it will take a WAR with Denver for it to happen, just like the celtics needed with cleveland last year after letting the hawks(undermanned rockets) take em to 7…….. once they find themselves and gut out a 7game series with denver, theyll win it by beating the unstoppable mvp and the unbeatable team that rolled through the other conference that they match up with perfectly and dominated in both regular season games, just like the celtics did last year…………………………………………………………. but thats only if they survive against the nuggets, who legitimately could win the championship………………………. its gonna be a war. I got Lakers BARELY winning in 7, and then winning the nba finals over the cavs in 5.

  • Steve

imagine if the nuggets still had mcdyess too?

  • http://www.slamonline.com george

The game went as I predicted, except for the loss. I wrote yesterday that if ‘Mello’s jumper falls he is unguardable. Also Kobe was the only clear advantage that the Lakers had. The nuggets front line dominated the game. I also said that Kenyon has to stay away from silly fouls. He did not. That play was just as responsible for the loss as the FREE throws and Carter’s brain freeze. Follow tonights preview after 6pm at http://www.gottheboot.blogspot.com

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

I agree that Kenyon had a very stupid foul…but in all honesty, if it wasn’t a foul, we’d be on his jock since it would have led to a fast break layup by Chauncey (or alley-oop back to Kmart). Let’s be honest…the Cavs lost 1 game at home all year. ONE! How can they lose with home court all throughout the playoffs? It could happen, but so far this year it hasn’t…not at any level.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

Bigdog you idiot. Billiups hit a three and was out of bounds ANNNNDDDDDDDD 4 goaltends in the first half that counted as blocks for the nuggets… gtfoh!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

O and the Lakers bench played good? lol check Kenyon Martin … 5 lobbed shots from the free throw line, and a mid range jumper he hit lol. That is NOT happening next game.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

A part of James the balla died when Kenyon blocked the black r@pist.

  • http://holleringinto.wordpress.com/ Nick the Great

@ bakers-dozen: Well, the Lakers were the team to give them that one loss, so if they beat them one game at home and hold their own home court… well, you know the rest.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Kenyon played better than Pau, Odom or Bynum. If that continues the Fakers wil not make it to the Finals (where they’d be trounced by Cleveland anyway).

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

No a part of me died when Kobe got called for a foul on the block, when he smashed Billups layup into the crowd!!

  • thatsthetruthruth

The only thing thats soft about this Laker team are the fans. The great hate is at an all-time high right now and Laker fans come back trying to sound all “knowledgeable about basketball” and “objective about the series”. Just read the other fans comments on this board. Thats how to act. Be like Antoine Walker and talk big! Be like Melo and just go for the choke hold. Denver Thugglets in 9! Book it.

  • bigdoggchad

@ James Well I have seen almost all of the Nuggets games this year and Kenyon has been hitting those shots all year so that wasn’t anything out of the norm. Also I seen one possible goaltend in the first half idk were you got four from. Every call went the Lakers way in the last five minutes of the game. The same time Kobe was scoring all his points and the Lakers came back. Coincidence??

  • bulldog

When you wish upon a star.. Denver will go very far..But we deal in reality..They’re history in another threeeeeeee.(Thank you-Thank you very much!)

  • bulldog

Then on to Cleveland we will go..It’s guaranteed to be a show..Lebron may have the MVP…But Kobe’s copping that trophyyyyyy! (Thank you-Thank you very much!)

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

Long read, take this post how you want to, if it’s too long don’t read it!!

It hasn’t suprised me that the anti-Kobe people always show up under every Laker post here. I’m sure some of you were ejaculating with joy of what Jerry West said. Jerry West knew what he was doing, hence the response from kobe yesterday. I’m going to stray away from the game a little but not alot and ask some of you, why do you hate Kobe so much, what did he do to you all?

He’s still playing at a high level and is performing outstanding on a busted shooting hand, bad knees, and ankles at age 30, do you all know how hard that is to substain and play like this? Also Bron, Melo, Wade and Dwight are all having great years “defensively” because Beijing Olmypics. They followed one man the ace coon boom KOBE. They all talked about how they followed him all olmypics and learned from him through that stretch he was the defensive demon on that Beijing team and what do you know, LeBron is being praised for his improved D, Melo improved defensivley this season, Wade made history with those steals and blocks and Dwight won defensive player of the year. They all followed him and admitted to the reason they won that gold. And who did coach K draw that last play up for them to beat Spain? Kobe, and who won us that gold in clutch situaitons? Kobe.

Some people need to put the personal hate they have of him aside and give him the due credit he deserves for what he produces on the court. I’ve never seen a player outside of Dennis Rodman be picked apart from everyone media, fans, Laker fans, and a boatload of others personally. He’s made mistaked like every other player in the league. His personal downfall was higlighted in his career more than what he’s done for the game on the court, and that’s why he hasn’t recieved the proper coverage of his career. Alot of people didn’t want to see him match MJ’s popularity so they tainted him as soon as he started catching fire, picking out petty parts of his game and making it seem like it was terrible when in reality he’s was just that good. It’s funny all of the things he’s been punished for is the exact same thing older players and present players are praised for. “Oh he’s too selfish he doesn’t pass the ball he just wants to score” doesn’t everyone score when they have to and need to? When others do it they’re heroes and when Kobe does it he’s selfish? “He’s selish because he doesn’t have alot of assits” So what he’s a shooter! His natural instinct is to shoot! His first few shots of his career where jumpshots not passes, dunks or lay-ups jumpshots. It’s what he revolves his game around shooting, so did Miller, and Allen are they selfish too? “He’s arrogant” so is eveyr greart or good player do you guys not watch the antics LeBron, and others do when they make shots or dunks?

It’s been 13 seasons and the same mess is still going on, I like watching all players in the league today but growing up watching L.A. and Kobe I feel he was the only player to be crucidfied because people didn’t like him personally, and it has caused people to see Kobe the “monster” more than Kobe the great player.
