Lakers/Nuggets Game 4 Recap

Are the Lakers the superior TEAM here or not?

by Cub Buenning

The first three games of the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets Western Conference Finals series have all been exciting, high energy; closely contested games that have all been decided during each game’s final minute. Simply put, one team’s late-game ability to execute on offense and get stops on defense has been the key. In what appears to be a series that might go the distance, the fact that the Lakers had a 2-1 advantage does not necessarily paint a picture of a unit that has been the better team.

In both of their wins in the series, LA has been largely outplayed but able to procure a victory with key steals by Trevor Ariza and clutch shooting by Kobe Bryant. Much of the same could be said about Denver’s Game 2 victory at Staples Center last Thursday, a game in which the victor held little of neither the game’s momentum nor its scoreboard advantage until the final ticks.

So could someone build a lead, endure its opponent’s inevitable runs and hold on for victory?

Or would it just behoove a team to tank early in hopes of coming on late for the win?

While no sane individual would base their strategy on a loser’s philosophy, it would be tough to ignore the paths followed by the past three games. Aside from the last 24 minutes of Game 3, Denver’s Carmelo Anthony has been as fabulous as his Olympic compatriot on the other side of the court. Sustained excellence by either team’s superstars was sure to be integral as the Lakers looked to take a commanding 3-1 lead while the home Nuggets hoped to head back to Tinsletown with a knotted-up series.

But on this night, it wasn’t the play of Kobe or Melo, rather the performances of each star’s supporting casts.

Melo’s was great, Kobe’s was grossly outplayed.

Melo’s scored in crunch time and did the dirty work; Kobe’s made Laker fans say dirty words.

The Denver bench outscored their Laker counterpart to the tune of 42-24, and the Nuggets blew open an early fourth quarter lead to win going away, 120-101. Seven Nugget players finished in double figures (paced by Billup and Smith, each with 24) an amazing fact which helped make up for both the ailing ankle and stomach of Anthony.

In what must be a tiresome refrain for Laker faithful, not much was produced outside of #24 and his bigman, Pau Gasol. The spindly Spaniard played another splendid game in the paint, getting 21 and 10, but his touches were far too rare for the production needed. Gasol was without much assistance under the boards as his team was brutalized on the boards, giving up 20 offensive rebounds to the Nuggets and once again, little more than a whimper was put up by the Lamar Odom/Andrew Bynum combo.

As Kobe put it, they got “whooped.”

Just as in Game 3, the home team jumped out to an early lead and held an advantage for the entire first half. While the home star-tandem of Anthony and Chauncey Billups were neutralized with the former suffering from a bum ankle and a 1-11 shooting half, it was the Denver bench that provided the lift. JR Smith and Chris Anderson played their usual brilliant selves at home with Smith electrifying the raucous crowd with both feats of individual scoring and deft playmaking.

Despite owning as much as a 15-point lead during the second quarter, the Nuggets were only able to go into half, up seven. Kobe was the biggest culprit of spoiling a Pepsi Center first-half blowout, scoring 19 first-half points.

Bryant continued his sublime play in the second half, as his 34 points gave him a combined total record for the first four games of a conference final series, but alas, basketball is a team sport.

And as this series rolls on and with Denver controlling the bulk of the action, a couple questions beg answering, regarding whether or not the Lakers are actually the better TEAM in this series.

Can LA overcome its massive over-reliance on Kobe and get the two wins needed to advance to their second straight NBA Finals?

Or is the better-rounded team from Denver poised to rewrite franchise history and make their first ever NBA Finals appearance?

If the Lakers can’t find a way to be little more than just Kobe, you’d have to side with the latter.

So if it 2 and a half, Kobe should get alot of recognition!!

LOL! Phil Jackson – That overrated geezer! Just check his record if you don’t believe me. Nine NBA championships as a coach and Two as a player. What an idiot! It’s not like he is one of the preeminient coaches in NBA history or even has a superior playoff winning percentage – he’s so out of touch and unintelligent. Thank God the Lakers aren’t paying him anything – he’s just too old, ya know. Just look at him. I bet you I could smoke his a** on XBox360. I’m guessing in his advanced age and with a hip replacement he could probably still take you to school after posting you 10 points and with plenty of time to catch the next episode of Golden Girls.

Red Auerbach won 10 championships and I bet I could beat him at checkers right now. Just because you did something once (or nine times) doesn’t mean you can still do it. And right now it seems to me that Phil is getting outcoached by GEORGE KARL.

  • Bub

Bottom line, the Lakers win the games they need to win. They needed game 3 to get back homecourt, and they got it. Game 4 didn’t really matter. They’re back in control and they will win game 5 at home. They could take it in 6, but if it goes 7, they will win that game because they step up when they need to. The Nuggets are all high off that big win and all that emotion, watch in game 5 as they get punched in the mouth.

  • bulldog

Considering the fact that Red Auerbach is dead I’d have to concede that one to you. Something to consider during your solo checker game:
At present, Earth orbits the Sun once for every roughly 366.26 times it rotates about its axis. This length of time is a sidereal year, which is equal to 365.26 solar days. The Earth’s axis of rotation is tilted 23.4° away from the perpendicular to its orbital plane, producing seasonal variations on the planet’s surface with a period of one tropical year (365.24 solar days).
Once again, I agree with you. All of that can change too in an instant. But I doubt it.

1- Russ, there would be some validity to that comment if it wasn’t freaking George Karl. He’s been killing teams since the early 90s. I suspect that media guys go easy on him because he’s always a great quote. 2- I beg to differ, Allen. JR can and does go left. 3- JR has been a lunatic since he came to the L. Why ya’ll acting surprised all of a sudden? Wild 3s, turnovers at the worst possible moment, jawing with everybody, hot streaks where he’s basically unguardable, glimpses of all-star status followed by mistakes that could earn him a d-league contract = JR Smith.

  • bulldog

Well said,”Z”. I’ll use an old school reference and say that JR is like Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson with a Ron Artest brain transplant. He’s like a Forrest Gump box o chocolates – You never know what you’re gonna get. It rarely shows with his understated, below the radar, aww shucks style of play- but I’m beggining to detect some type of minor flaw involving his ego. Naww. Scratch that – he’s golden.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

    Z
JR is a right-handed bandit in the mode of Latrell Sprewell and Jerry Stackhouse.
You get a maximum of two dribbles with the left hand before he’s shooting, passing or turning the ball over. Just watch him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’ll pay attention next game, it never occured to me that JR couldn’t go left. / Lol, Spree had basically two off hands. I remember those fastbreaks in NYC where he would literally throw the ball in fron of him and then sprint to go get it. All that capped off by a nasty two-handed tomahawk. His game was based on confidence alone, the J was crooked as eff too. Good times, good times.

JR, or should I say “Smitty”, can have a home on my fantasy team any time though. If the Nuggets can steal game 5 in LA they’ll close the Lakers at home in 6. Bet it.

  • TADOne

Just checking in after a long vacation and in the midst of some boring ass training to say…….HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

Loved the comment last night when they started calling JR “Smitty.” The other commentator was like, “that’s an original nickname…”. Good times. The thign is, yes the Lakers can win when they need to, but dang…they don’t have the killer instinct you’d expect. Why NOT win yesterday and then close out at home in 5? I’ll tell you why, because they LACK THE KILLER INSTICT. This will cost them the series. Denver wins tomorrow, and gets the OT victory at home in 6.

  • TADOne

That said, the Lakers will probably still win this in 7 games. The Cavs however……

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

we need to create a puppet show of our own that shows Bird and Melo vs. Dwight and Hedo…THAT would get 1,000,000+ youtube hits! Scrizzew the Kobe/LBJ commercials!

Good game by Denver they abused us on the glass, that was the key to them winning

I like Frank Hamblin’s expression in that pic: “What a jerkoff”.

  • Stan

I don’t understand why Vujacic is allowed to play at all, he did make two 3′s but whenever they show his face on tv, i want to throw the gaddam remote right through his face. Brown is definitely a better player so i’m not getting it. The zen master has to get out of zen mode and start coaching, having gasol and kobe on the bench while denver rolls. If it was up to me, if kobe is on the bench, pau should play and vice versa. Damnit phil, you don’t have scottie and MJ anymore!!!

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

It’s amazing how what JR Smith did is considered cool when he plays for your team, and a sign of everything that’s wrong with the NBA when he doesn’t.
    Perspective is a mother.

  • Sparker

it was only one game. this is something we all know, yet we all continue to generalize on what we saw most recently.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I love watching JR, he’s one of the reasons I like the Nuggs so much. He nearly won me a fantasy basketball chip by going absolutely bananas for the last two weeks of the regular season. But last night’s antics were a bit much. Not that tere was anyhting inherently “wrong” or even “thuggish” about them, but I just found my self enjoying him less afterwards. If he had hit that shot to win the game or even take the lead from 7-10 in the last minute, I could understand him wanting to walk it out in front of LA’s bench. But the game was over at that point. It was celebration for celebration’s sake.
I know it was just an emotional moment for him, especially after struggling throughout this series, and at home he allows himself to get caught up in the crowd’s jubillation, but I just found myself saying “ugh”
All that said, I still hope he torches Kobe in game 6.

  • Sparker

and you can’t stop jr smith. he can only stop himself… which he does fairly frequently (not that it makes me like him less)

  • The Truth

I think in order for Denver to win this series, there are 3 X-factors.

    1. JR has to score the ball/ facilitate. The offense runs much smoother for Melo, and Chauncey if JR is a threat.

    2. Kleiza is key, (which he basically won the Nuggs game 2) He has to come in and hit his open jumpers, and rebound the ball efficently.

    3. Chris “Bird Man” Anderson has to get some blocks. We know he does his thing at home and gets the crowd roarin, he obviously is a fan favorite for his hustle and effort but he cannot only do this at home, he has to be able to do this on the road. To block shots, hustle after loose balls, even when the crowd is not on their feet for him.

In Game 4 all three of these X factors were in favor of Denver, and you see the results even though Melo only had 15 points. If the Nuggets can get these X factors in their favor I think Game 5 should be interesting, and Denver will have an oppurtune chance to take this series and advance to the Finals.

    JR Smith can’t go left.
That is all. ” If the Lakers cant stop JR from going right, does that really matter, at all?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

If the Nuggs get big games from JR, Birdman, and Kleiza in game 6 in LA…Carmelo, Chauncey, JR and the Nuggs will “Walk It Out” all the way to the finals!

  • bakers-dozen (12-13_

I like the look on Phil Jackson’s face, “Crap…now he’s getting loose…we can’t stop Melo, let alone JR Smith, too…long game on Wednesday…”.

  • bill breedley

blame loss on a great game by the nuggets. they outplayed the lakers. dominated the boards big time. that I think was the key. calls may have been going nuggets way, but even if called evenly lakers would have still lost. you dont win getting outrebounded by more than 10.

  • Josh

Exactly. An 18 rebound difference between the two teams equals nowhere even remotely close enough effort from the Lake show. Its funny, I thought they could have won if Bynum played more in game two, he started out alright there, but yesterday all he did was foul and allow offensive rebounds (that flagrant was NOT a flagrant foul). Nuggets had their way last night, look for a more focused Lakers tomorrow/a more pissed off Kobe

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Kenyone, Nene, and Chris Anderson are too gritty for LA’s bigs. LA may have size but that doesn’t change the fact that they have the consistency of whip cream in the post. 3 plays with atleast 13 rebounds in one game? Lakers Bigs = Cake

    Great great photo… classic.

  • http://www.showmeyourwits.com showmeyourwits

That was ONE game where the Lakers bigs were outrebounded. Hardly makes them incapable of rebounding

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Lakeshow vs. Nuggets = Kobe Bryant vs. 10 players.
The Cavaliers vs. Magic = LeBron James vs. 10 players.
Why are the Lakers and Cavaliers considered GOOD? LeBron and Kobe are impeccable, but seriously, basketball is a team game. Right now Kobe and LeBron are practically FORCED to score half their teams’ points, and even that isn’t guaranteed the W.
The Magic might be the best ALL-AROUND team left in the playoffs.

  • chintao

Paradoxically, the Nuggets are the better team, because they have the better star. ‘Melo is more willing to trust his teammates, and his teammates respond to that trust.

Fphil at 20 m.p.h. and the turn-signal on killed me. While George Karl deserves alot of heat for that Game 1 fiasco, I must acknowledge that he has made progress of which I did not think he was capable. He has heeded advice from his staff and his players in scrapping the chuck ‘n’ duck offense and in deciding defensive assignments. He learned from Game 1, but some unlucky miscommunication caused a near instant replay in Game 3. For these and other reasons, it may not be so shameful to be outcoached by George Karl these days.

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

i really don’t like the Lakers, but I think those dirty plays Denver is doing is gonna catch up to them. I think L.A. wins the series. Can they beat Orlando though?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

George Karl out coaching Phil Jackson?? He’s been waiting for this day since the 1996 finals with the Bulls and Sonics, I think he cried after the press interview of game…4 was it? Where they got done over by 40-50 points. Mind you, it always looks like George is about to cry…

I Think The Key For A Nuggets Game 5 Victory Is Scoring More Points Than The Lakers. Or Do They Want To Score Less? No, No, They Want To Score More. And They Will.

  • Windex MAN

i agree with the truth…….. it will be interesting to see if melo is recovered from the sickness that effected his play in game 4 but his team stepped up and played flawless basketball…. If melo is not 100% again 2nite then the pressure will be on the other starters and the very talented Denver bench…….If the Lakers do not get all players involved in the game it will be hard for them to beat denver and some of the lights out shooters for them miss shot they make on a regular basis
