Lakers/Rox Game 3 Recap

The Lakers steal home whenever they want.

by Adam Sweeney

Game 3 had all the build up of a prize fight between Ali and Frazier, with the assumed advantage going to Houston at home, particularly with Derek Fisher serving a one game suspension. Yeah, about that.

Before the game, there were some intriguing sights.

In case you had forgotten,  Adam Morrison still plays in the league. The NBA Playoffs. Where the kid on side of the milk carton happens.

Also, Von Wafer will have a job as the And 1 hype man once he leaves the league. Just saying. The cat is intense.

A sign in the crowd read “Kobe: When Ron says no, he really means NO.” Houston fans aren’t pulling any punches this series, but neither is Kobe, so does that make them even? Nah, it doesn’t. Those signs are uncalled for.

The L.A. Lakers looked once again like a championship team, or to go Dennis Green on you, “They are who we thought they were!” The Lakers got off to another tremendous start but you got the feeling that if the Rockets could handle the surge of the Lakers’ home cro… oh wait.

Kyle Lowry said, “Those guys came out aggressive. They put their stamp on this game, so we have to come back and put our defensive stamp on the game. We had a good defensive stretch but they made some big plays and hurt us.”

Much was made of Derek Fisher’s one game suspension, but it actually helped the Lakers. Jordan Farmar’s quickness limited the passing windows for Aaron Brooks, clearly frustrating him. His 12 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 1 turnover were critical to the win.

In the locker room after the game, Farmar told me the key was, “Really controlling the tempo was important, especially on the road in the Playoffs. You can’t let the game get out of hand. It starts with me, the point guard, to not turn the ball over and distribute the ball when you need it. Kobe was hot early. We got Pau the ball, got Odom the ball and got Trevor some shots. We just spread the ball around and use our talent.”

You have to cheer for a hometown guy like Farmar. He has fought through adversity and come out on top. After the game, he talked about what this game meant to him.

“You never know how this league works or what the situation is going to be,” said Farmar. “We have a team that’s going for a championship and a whole city behind me. It’s a place that I grew up in, and loved and watched. You just gotta be ready to step up when you get that call.”

Kobe Bryant echoed those sentiments.

“I’m very proud of him. It’s one of the things we talked about while he wasn’t playing for a period. He stayed with the team and worked on his game, because the opportunity’s going to come. You have to be ready to step up for it. Tonight he played extremely well for us.”

Lamar Odom chimed in with some love for Farmar as well.

“Jordan, it was tough. He missed time because he got hurt and wasn’t playing as much. He got his call tonight and he answered it. That’s why we call him Little Pro. Derek [Fisher] is Big Pro and Jordan is Little Pro. He was ready, prepared and I don’t think he turned the ball over tonight.”

Kobe switched up his game tonight, getting teammates open looks. He told me, “I’m just doing what I do best, challenging other teams to do something with it. We. as a team, play off of that. It’s on me to be aggressive. When a double team comes, I gotta hit my teammates.”

Let’s make something clear. Kobe’s an amazing player, arguably the most skilled player in the game, maybe ever. He can break down any defender, and I mean any. Nobody doubts that. But dude threw ANOTHER elbow on Artest in the 3rd and he continues to jaw at Shane Battier without provocation. His 3 at the end of the 3rd was the dagger in the Rockets’ heart, but he kills the beauty of it by rocking a Buffalo stance in the middle of the court after. Kobe is too talented to be doing that, but I guess that’s what makes him such a polarizing character. He has become the Alex Rodriguez of the NBA, a rare talent that is letting it get drowned out by the things that don’t matter. Play ball and we will love you for it, Mamba, I promise.

I’m not going to be confused for Rick Adelman any time soon, but has anybody considered double teaming Kobe? Anybody? Luic Scola shaded him in the 3rd quarter, but the Rockets need to make it their mission to contain Kobe. If they get beaten by the rest of L.A., like they did tonight, so be it.

If Barack Obama wants to push for a more environment friendly America, he could start by cleaning up a nuclear meltdown in Houston. The Rockets lost because they continuously made uncharacteristic mental errors and bad passes. The Rockets have made their name because of their crisp defensive rotations, which were surprisingly absent in the 1st quarter, and limitation of turnovers. They had 11 by the half. Sick.

Yao Ming spoke about the breakdown, saying, “Each quarter we had our problems. The first quarter we gave them fast break points. The turnovers in that second quarter. Then the third, we didn’t show up. By the fourth quarter, it was too late.”

Von Wafer said, “We have to give a better effort. They killed us off the turnovers. They got 20 points off the turnovers. You have to limit that because they’re already the best or second best team in the NBA. You can’t give them that many points. They’re going to beat you every time.”

The Lakers matched the Rockets’ aggressiveness and were quicker to 50/50 balls. Luke Walton, Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom had timely shots, killing any momentum the Rockets were gaining.

Luke Walton talked to me about the depth of the Lakers, saying, “We pride ourselves on being a deep team. We know we have the superstars and we feel like if we get production out of different guys each night, along with scoring from our stars, we are really tough to beat. You have to give credit to a lot of guys. Jordan that haven’t been in the rotation lately. He comes in and plays 32 minutes, has double digit scoring, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. That type of performance s huge for a team. It’s a big reason that we won the game.”

Ariza has been great all season and doesn’t mind his guy doubling Kobe.

“That’s fine with me. I’m going to keep shooting them as long as I’m open,” said Ariza.

The Rockets had more rebounds on the night, but it looked like the Lakers were getting every second chance opportunity. That’s what happens when a team is aggressive.

The story of the night will inevitably be Ron Artest’s ejection. We should be talking about the Lakers’ defensive intensity and bench support, but let’s get on the refs for a bit. I don’t want to say the refs in the NBA Playoffs are smoking crack, but they just hired Pookie from New Jack City to sub in Game 4. The officials are calling the games far too tight as a preventative measure. Every player I talked to said that the ejection was uncalled for, even Pau Gasol, who said, “It wasn’t an intentional hit to be dirty, but at the same time it was still physical.”

Yao told me that he’d have committed the hard foul the same way as Ron on the play ,and that the physical play isn’t hurting the Rockets.

“We still play the way we play. The foul that got Artest ejected, it seems like I’d foul a little hard too because I don’t want to get dunked on. It looked like on that, an and one play, you want to foul hard. Ron did and he’s obviously strong.”

By the way, if anybody sees Sasha Vujacic, tell him to give Von Wafer his head back. Vujacic cracks me up. He hits one shot all game and runs to tell Andrew Bynum that he’s on fire. Then he proceeds to miss his next 2 shots. Not that the Vujacic- Von Wafer battle isn’t the stuff of legends, but maybe it’s time to tone it down. I also think “The Machine” has a man crush on Kobe. Just saying. He should. He’s made his postseason career off Kobe’s leftovers.

I called Lamar Odom the X-Factor of this series and he proved me right this game. He got into foul trouble but set the pace on the first score of the game, a crowd dejecting alley oop. His dunk off a rebound near the end of the game put the exclamation on the Lakers’ statement. They aren’t afraid of anyone on the road. Yeah, even you, Cleveland.

Luis Scola is going to get a fat paycheck for the way he has played. Mark it down.

Now down 2-1 at home, the Rockets must win Game 4. It’s that simple. Whether they can do that depends on Yao Ming’s health. He is getting tests on his foot, which was aggravated in Game 3. Also, we will see if Stu Jackson decides to suspend Ron Artest. If so, the Rockets are as good as done. If Houston wins Game 4, this series is going to 7. Believe that.

The Lakers have officially shaken off the rust that came from a layoff, and have taken control of this series. They’ve also proven they can win playing any style of basketball. But they also know that the Rockets aren’t going to give them any game for free. There’s no quit in Houston. That’s okay. The Lakers are proving that they have the killer instinct, as they have almost all season long against Houston. A win in Game 4 for them essentially ends the series. I’m calling it. Kobe scores 100. Okay, not really… maybe.

Its interesting how whatever Kobe does is panned as showboating etc but whatever Lebron does is all good….Kobe is killing two vaunted defenders this series…deal with it guys and enjoy watching Kobe play, not gonna see anyone like him for a long time

  • Max

Great recap, one of the best SLAM has run yet. Kobe’s having a good series, but he’s not “killing” two vaunted defenders when he shoots 14 for 31 in Game 1 and 11 for 28 in Game 3 — only Game 2 was excellent. Brandon Roy handled Artest and Battier much more efficiently than Kobe did in Houston’s last playoff series.

  • AlbertBarr

The difference is the Lakers are winning and Portland Lost. So, who cares how efficient Brandon Roy was.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

That was the single worst flagrant 2 call I’ve ever seen in my 20-something years watching the NBA. We get it, the League wants L.A. and Cleveland in the Finals. Fine. Call me when it starts. In the meantime, I have better things to do with my time. FREE RON ARTEST.

  • http://www.twitter.com/kevinchung Kevin

i honestly get where some of the hate/dislike of Kobe comes from.. but you can’t deny his talent.. or his flair for the dramatic.. as a kid, i remember being awestruck when i’d watch Jordan demoralize an entire team when he wanted to.. i was mesmerized watching Olajuwon toy with defenders as a 7footer during those playoff runs.. in his prime, i was always amzed by how Shaq could both overpower AND outclass defenders with footwork/passing.. now, Dwight Howard and Lebron James both simply dominate the competition, but there really isn’t anybody i’d want to watch play basketball more than Kobe.. so, what more can you really ask for? athletes are human too, and maybe he just IS an a*hole in some ways.. i’m not trying to be his best friend, so it doesn’t bother me one bit – simply put, i’m happy just being a fan when Kobe’s playing. (Dwayne Wade is distant 2nd, for the record)

  • http://www.twitter.com/kevinchung Kevin

ps. i think its stupid as hell that they actually said they called it a Flagrant 2 because of the way Pau fell.. 95% sure it’ll be rescinded.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Great game for the Lakeshow. Jordan was huge for us. Maybe it was the haircut? Him diving on the floor and crawling to the ball was the highlight of the playoffs for me so far. That flagrant call on Ron was bullsh!t, but I agree with pretty much everyone else that it will get rescinded. I’m just glad it had no bearing on the outcome of the game. That would’ve been ugly. The fact that you compared A-Rod to Kobe is a little ridiculous considering the reason Alex gets hate is more for his steriod use and his inability to contribute to a championship than anything else. By your way of thinking, I guess that makes LeBron Manny?

  • http://www.twitter.com/jamesgoesham JamesgoesHam

i agree with logan, kevin, and russ

  • Tecun Uman

Come on dude. Why complain about something LeBron did the night before and no commentary from you.

“…he continues to jaw at Shane Battier without provocation. His 3 at the end of the 3rd was the dagger in the Rockets’ heart, but he kills the beauty of it by rocking a Buffalo stance in the middle of the court after…”

You just don’t get it. Kobe is sending a message to all media types out there that somehow think Battier is some kind of Kobe stopper. You know… it’s become a joke now. This fool even has some note book on how to take Kobe to where he wants him to go. Good luck with that. We know your breed… Patterson, Pippen, Bowen, Christie, Artest, Radja, Kirelenko, Iguodola … the list just keeps growing. Give it a break now. I assure you Kobe will keep rubbing it in to the media types who keep hyping up the defense of Artest and Shane played on him. Sure it’s great but why not also then bring up the defense he’s played on Shane? Straight up pimp slapped him in to irrelevance. What were his numbers last night? Oh yeah…

    42 minutes
    2 -5 FGM-A

    Oh, and baaaaaaaah.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Adam, i think Houston will be hesitant to double Kobe considering how close the games have been…and even game 3 would have been close had they not turned the ball over so much, plus they dont want to give anyone else an open cut to the rim…….i can’t be mad at this team though even if they made some dumb mistakes, i’m sure everyone though they’d get blown out at least once and yet all the games have been competitive. Kobe had his Kobe moments and he had great block and strip on Yao….Yao needs to bulk up again…basically houston went back to playing the way they did at times during the regular season…i expect them to bounce back in game 4, their energy was piss poor in game 3 which was very surprising to me. This was probably the first game in the playoffs were i didnt feel they were giving it their all…that being said, to still be in the game late has to be encouraging for them.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jamesgoesham JamesgoesHam

it didnt really feel like they were still in tha game even when it was close. losing on your home floor by double digits is never encouraging

  • Michael

Good game from the Lakers. Jordan was excellent, Kobe hit big shots, and drove to the basket much more than he had in the rest of the playoffs.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

JamesgoesHam, your comments doesn’t surprise me given your link….i’m sure you didnt think the game 1 victory was encouraging at the time either..

i agree the Artest foul was BS, but it didnt determine the outcome of the game. ugh i hate the lakers so much man. but they won this fair and square. they cant handle chauncey though!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That was NOT a flagrant 2. It shouldn’t have even be a flagrant 1. Nowhere did Ron Artest even TOUCH Gasol’s head. Stu, please, we know you’re better than suspending Ron Artest, when he’s an important piece of the Rockets.
If the NBA does this, its as good as handing over the championship to the Lakers, simple as that.

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

when i saw the “flagrant,” my immediate thought was that i am through with the nba. how can professional referees be that bad?

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

if you watch the replays, it looks like kyle lowry karate chopped pau, which through him off balance. ron just happened to be the last guy to hit him, making it look like it was his fault

  • Sarah

I have no stock in this series other than watching good basketball, but I have to say that was NOT a flagrant 2. This really is getting out of control now.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

By the way, I really, really don’t get why the NBA and other fans think of Ron Artest as a dirty player. WHERE has he been dirty? He doesn’t throw ‘bows, he doesn’t cheapshot, and he doesn’t blindsight people on fouls. He’s also constantly keeping the guys on his team from losing their temper. Just because he got into a fight with the Pistons’ fans, after somebody THREW A CUP OF BEER AT HIM, people make him out to be the villian. In actuality, Ron’s a great guy and he’s always honest.
Seriously, if a fan threw a cup of beer at Larry Bird, would you really expect him not to throw-down with a couple of punks?

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

hey tecan uman, you’re not proving anything with those numbers. those are pretty much shane’s averages for the season anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

^If you think that that call had anything to do with the outcome of the game, there is no hope for you. It was a horrible call though.

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

yea b.long, it was a terrible call. even though it happened so late and didnt do anything to the outcome of the game, what if the foul happened in the first half?

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

and teddy, there was a season where ron had flagrants all day. he was throwing a lot of players to the ground if i remember right. this was before malice at the palace.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

It didn’t. Thank God we don’t have to worry about that. And that comment was really for Tad.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ davidR: Back then, we had Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason knocking people all over the place. BUT, they weren’t dirty or cheap, or punks.
Now, we have Sasha Vujacic. Who, if I may add, is about 10 times worse than Ron Artest in terms of dirty play. But wait, does that girl get any reputation in the NBA for flagrant fouls? Not to referees, anyway. In short, its BS.

  • kkent

I agree with Logan! The biased press “Loves” Labron who does a show before and after games, but when Kobe try’s to shut down big mouth players like Artest they call Kobe “Arrogant”, and make comments on his trash talking. Anyone remember Michael Jordon and his trashtalking? Seems to me Artest started it before the playoffs when he kept talking smack to Kobe. I’d like to see you write about how you want Labron to just play and not showboat and then maybe I’ll take your bised comments seriously.

Hater’s are always proved wrong! So what if he froze, and posed. Did you see the signs that were supposed to intimidate him? Sorry, you just fueled him so, THANKS!

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

I love how worked up y’all Laker fans are when somebody insinuates a guy can guard Kobe. Battier, in the game during some interview segment, basically just said “I have a plan, I’ll stick with him, not foul, make him shoot jumpers. The rest is out of my hands.” With guys as good as Kobe, the best you can do is limit them. That’s all he’s doing. But you’re right. Shooting 11 for 28 is totally dominant. It’s not working at all.
    Dubious.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Yeah i dont think anyone considers Shane a “kobe stopper”, and that’s because HE DOESNT REFER TO HIMSELF AS ONE like those other guys..the book he has is about kobe, but it doesn’t guarantee anything, it’s no different than the reports teams have of other teams, it’s just research he tries to use to help him out there, he never declared it had all the answers to guarding Kobe..

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

and ron’s flagarant was reduced to a 1 by the league today

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i’m surprised no one is hating on Yao’s injury though..

  • rand33p

Why is this writer complaining about kobe’s “antics” or “posing” … thats pretty much 90% of the league these days (including wade, bron, the whole nuggets team…)

  • rand33p

…and i hope yao is healthy.. sick of him being injured dude is a beast

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

Why would anyone talk about Kobe’s defense on Battier? That makes no sense. Outside of spot up shooting Battier has never been a scoring threat. Kobe on the other hand is one of the most gifted offensive players in the game… and Battier is one player who can defend him very well and make him work for his points… which he has done so far outside of game 2.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

“By the way, if anybody sees Sasha Vujacic, tell him to give Von Wafer his head back.”

I can’t stand Vujacic, but that play should have been an offensive foul on Wafer.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Caleb, i think he even made him work for his points in game 2, Kobe just hit more of them….There was a stretch in that game in the 2nd where Kobe was dribblign alot, trying to get by the defense for a few posessions, he finally drew a foul and at the FT line he looked worn out, obviously he wasn’t, but that stretch did wear him out for a sec, which is not common. By the end of this series, if it goes to 6 or 7 games, regardless of the outcome, Kobe’s going to be tired as hell. Roy’s last words in Houston, while on the bench, were “I’m so tired” (said it to a teammate). That may take a toll on Kobe if they advance and meet the energetic Nuggets.

Sternbot needs to send a memo to the refs to rescind their vendetta against Ron. I am a huge Lakers fan, but what is the NBA trying to prove. Artest has kept his nose clean, even playing peacemaker when other players start scrapping. His has shown that he is in control, but he still gets thrown out 2 of 3 games. If they really want to make sure that an “incident” doesn’t occur, keep him in the game. One more unneccesary tossout, and he may go Spreewell on Joey Crawford. Why punish a guy who has been obviously making a huge effort? Absolutely no other player on either team would have been ejected for that foul….

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Doubling a superstar wing player is not as easy as it sounds. Send it too early and they will pick you apart. Dudes like Kobe and LBJ will find the open man everytime. It’s not like doubling a bigman on the block off the bounce while he has his back to the basket. A good wing will seek the double team, drag it somewhere near halfcourt and hit an open shooter.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

Nice Logan! O and Max, more efficiently eh, hmmm how did that work out for Roy? OMG This is stupid LBJ his the exact same shot, dusts his shoulders and stands in the middle and yall talk him up ,,, ADAM SWEENEY YOU ARE A F()CKING IDIOT!!! GTFOH

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

Lol ya’ll include this writer Mr.Sweney, is so far up Bron’s ass… lol I wishhhhhh the Lakers started dancing every home game and spending 45 minutes lighting fake fires and hitting fake baseballs … Eboy and the rest of you guys would have a heart attack lol. O and Ebou how did “I can really see Houston taken both of these homes games” go???? GTFOH!!

  • http://www.Slamonline.com Adam Sweeney

    @Logan,
I am not too big on LeBron’s act either. I get that he wants to get the crowd pumped up, etc. but it does get a bit tired after all. I think the difference some people see is that he includes his teammates in his gestures a lot of the time. Kobe has yet to do that. Both deserve credit for the ability though, and that’s why they’re likely going to the NBA Finals. Ya better believe David Stern is aching for it to happen. Almost everyone in the media room was of the belief that there has been an effort to ensure it happens. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but there is without question a double standard for certain stars in the NBA. Always has been.

  • Justin

I agree with James. LeBron hit a very similar shot the night before, stood there posed at halfcourt. You don’t think Kobe saw that? These guys watch each other. They know what’s up. That was just a little acknowledgment from KB.

  • http://www.Slamonline.com Adam Sweeney

LBJ, I have never talked LeBron up. There are many writers on this website. Maybe you’re thinking of one of them. Whether it’s Bron, Wade or anybody talking noise and making the game about themselves, I don’t like it. Let’s make that clear. It has nothing to do with an agenda against Kobe. The point is that Kobe’s so talented that he doesn’t have to ask for attention. His game should be enough to say it all. And nobody has been saying Shane Battier is a Kobe stopper, Tecun Uman. In fact, we all were commenting about how unstoppable Kobe is. Battier has said he can’t stop Kobe, so I don’t know if it gets any more definite than that. So yeah, I think I do get it. Thanks.

  • Peter B

I don’t understand why everything kobe does has to critisized and scrutinized. If Kobe didn’t celebrate after making a big shot, he would be labelled as cold and passionless, if he does it’s a selfish gesture. If he scores alot he’s selfish if he doesn’t he’s lost a step. If someone hits on kobe’s wife its his fault for making an issue about it. If shaq doesn’t want to get in shape to secure an extension with the lakers it’s kobe’s fault for pushing him out. If the lakers win a championship, it’s a team effort, if they lose it’s because kobe let them. If the laker’s beat the cavs in the finals, it’s because the lakers had a better team, if they don’t, will obviously lebron must be better than kobe. If the lakers lose a game the laker hater nation arrives and submits 100+ comments, if they win they dissapear, unless they have something to criticize kobe about. Noticing how the game 1 laker loss only had around 160 comments and the game 2 laker win had just 28!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

So if that is what your saying Adam. Why not say Lebron and Kobe and WADE BIG TIME, need to stop. Every lay up Wade makes he stares at everyone he can, little kids included. Or hit a game winner and get ont he anouncers table. Lebron runs into the crowd and dances, or flexes to the crowd. And what do you write about … and dagger to end the 3rd that Kobe hit and he stands still for 2.4 seconds and shoes a serious face, like he ain’t playing … now before I finish that sentence, you say Lebron does it with his teammates. So when Brown the rest of the Lakers ran out at Kobe and were telling him that was an amazing shot … he is celebrating with who? The Lakers feed off of Kobe like the Cavs do Lebron. yet you say Kobe celebrates himself with his anctics? You are very very biased, you can see it in your writing. Not impressed. All though my opinion means sh1t … Wade is above most players for this, Lebron and Kobe are way above as well. I seem to remember Detroit being mad because Bron walked around for 3 minutes flexing his muscles after an and 1 …

  • Holiday

Man what’s with the MVP talk only surrounding the best players, I think Chauncy Billups should have been real close to gettin the MVP he was more valuable than Kobe! Tell me the Lakers wouldn’t be any good without him, yeah he puts them at the top but Denvers defense and success in a big part is because of Billups! Who’s really more important to there team winning!
