Live Blog: USA vs Brazil

Tied atop Group B, but not for long

by Matt Lawyue / @mlawyue

Predictably, USA and Brazil have steamrolled through Group B in their first two games. USA defeated Croatia and Slovenia by similar margins, 106-78 and 99-77, while Brazil came one point close of identical victories over Iran and Tunisia, 81-65 and 80-65.

Tonight’s match-up should significantly test the American’s lack of size, which hasn’t been a problem thus far, as they’ve out-rebounded the competition 89-74. Kevin Love is cleaning up, coming off the bench to snag 21 boards in just 26 minutes of action. His double-double yesterday is exactly why Coach K brought him along, to be a bulldog in the paint. Along with Lamar Odom, they’ll have to deal with the height and physicality of Andy Varejao, who’s been out with a sprained right ankle, and Tiago Splitter.

The winner of this game will sit alone at the top of Group B, with Team USA and Brazil inevitably advancing in first and second place. This is significant because Group B faces Group A in the knockout rounds, where powerhouses Argentina and Serbia (likely finishing their group first and second) await the third and fourth place finishers of Group B.

ESPN will be airing the game at 2:30 PM EST. ESPN 3 should have it online.

@Dark,Nick,max & the rest of my young ones….:so Germany faces an average/good team that simply has most its players available and loses 83-42…???!!! And your boyfriend (is the only rational explanation i can give for placing an international nobody in the top-40 players in the world) comes back to his usual self when facing real competition(2 points, nothing new, he did the same facing decent competition against Olympiakos, but ,u see, not only you don’t watch FIBA games , you also make affirmations also like the jukaitavoris guy…)???!!! Well, my little ones, the fact that “I TOLD YOU, I TOLD YOU” is not called ARROGANCE, it is called REALISM. We are talking about 30 years bball experience here.No videogame/statistic coefficient can help you here. Why? Cause there is no short-cut to knowledge. SORRY. SCHOOLS OUT.-

Where were you when Greece got their dicks handed to them the other day by the team of cartoons from the United States, Spanny?

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

    @Eboy…..: LESSON 1: This is a ball.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

I feel bad for Barbosa; this is one of the last times he’s playing on a good team.

  • Pnightmare

    go Brazil!!!

  • tavoris

I see the greek guy is still mentioning my name. I haven’t entertained the dude in conversation in almost a fackin’ year, and he’s still typing my name. BRILLIANT.

  • Pnightmare

Team USA widhout KD wouldn’t even win a medal

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Ouch Gerard.. Come on!

  • Pnightmare

Team USA without KD would never win a medal

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

@ Spanny….Lesson two: These are balls…in your mouth.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    LMAO @ Eboy

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

The atdhe broadcast I’m watching at work (espn3.com doesn’t work here) appears to be the British feed. It’s pretty refreshing, actually.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

@Ben: I love the British announcer. Dude is screaming when someone hits a 3, I like it.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

But daddy is not bad, daddy is old and wise, daddy is here to cultivate his young ones, he is here to teach and tutor, not make his own kids feel bad after a small (ok not so small but doesn’t matter) mistake…your daddy is here to love! And now he is about not only to make you happy again (and allow you to get out of mammy’s skirt) BUT he will also save you lots of money!!!! How..??? Well, tomorrow plays Greece against Turkey and everybody is going to say “Greece is top-4 in the world to turkey’s 18,they have some of the best players in the world, and ,most important, they elliminated last year Turkey without having the legendary Diamantidis and one of the most skilled bigs on earth(Tsartsaris), this is going to be piece of cake for them, lets place our bets on them and fool the poor bookmakers….well here intervene the little details that seperate the pretenders from the masters: for a variety of reasons (politics, history, the recent serbia-greece game and others) Greece will propably lose tomorrow and maybe(i hope not the latest) even with a wide margin. Erdog*n will see the game personally and said that they HAVE to win tomorrow, the refs have killed Greece in the first two games(especially in the Puerto Rico one were Barea got the WADE-2006 treatment) and 11000 maniacs will root against the powerhouse like crazy…So,DONT bet against Turkey and lose money.just come here and yell at daddy and feel good again. And daddy will feel better about his little ones!!! Now , in case we win (you never know) i promise not to say anything about our greatness,blah,blah,…..by the way: next game your boyfriend plays Angola, i expect a strong showing from him.Heads up!!!! GO YAGLLA !!!!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

no offense, but most of the times in your posts I’m not sure if you are just talking to yourself, or you just really like typing down whatever comes up in your head and using this site as your diary. “daddy”.

  • Kauhl

Wow! The “mighty” USA team having a hard time against depleted Brazil… Who knew?

  • Retrobat

I have to co-sign Gerard here. I’ve often enjoyed Spanny’s (if that is Spanny) posts in the past and tend to think that some of his observations about various ballers (i.e. iverson, starbury, etc.) are fairly accurate. However, his above diatribe is really…kind of odd.

  • Megalo

    USA, USA!!!!!!!!

  • tavoris

@Gerard & Retrobat – it’s called spamming. He’s old hat at that annoying tactic.

Sorry for that fellas, just a “private” message to the Greek guy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

A grown man who refers to himself as “daddy” while talking to other men is more than a little suspect…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    Durant. That is all.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

not that i’m at all interested in adding to all of this intercontinental hatred, but isn’t it a bit short sighted to refer to brazil’s depleted team while ignoring that only one of usa’s best players is in uniform? two or three if you’re being generous. let’s not overreact here, people.

    fun game!

  • http://Www.lkz.net Darksaber

Daddy and boyfriend, hmm? Someone misses mommy’s breastmilk. Quite convenient to start ranting when a team has an off game (a day after a 2OT thriller agaiinst a very good team). Wonder where all this Schadenfreude was when Team Germany was fighting off ARG or hustling for the win agains SRB So refreshing to see the Greek Douche for what he is. Keep on ranting and insulting, troll. It adds more weight to what little ‘opinion’ you think you have.

  • http://Www.lkz.net Darksaber

Wow, nice liveblog again Slam. I missed the US game, gotta watch the recap after work.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

haha you gotta respect Iguodala, here’s what he said on twitter after the game: “That move by barbosa was wicked wasn’t it? Respect where respect is due… I was like “please miss the shot!”

  • xplore

love usa’s team but not more than 08 olympics team. this new team is young , fast, and got game.

  • paolo paolo

The best game of the tournament so far. The first half in particular. Huertas played phenomenal pick & roll (have you seen between the legs pass to Splitter for a finish?), but during halftime the USA made adjustments. Brazil missed badly Nene, who could add to the scoring in the post. Splitter was very predictable but still caused some problems.

Leadership by Billups, incredible skills of Durant made the difference.

  • damien

Durant had 7 turnovers so lets not completely forget about his contribution to the game being close. Everyone could have played better but theyve only played a few games together. If Coach K ses more pick and roll offense it would be helpful to the guards because the refs are allowing the international players to play tight and aggressive so lets fight fire with fire.

  • Pnightmare

Leadership of billups made only difference to the worse, as he was constantly trying to win a game by himself – mr. big shot. Rose was much more dangerous.

  • The Champ

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned how Barbosa destroyed Iggy with probably the best crossover of the year!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

It was my first time seeing Splitter play and it was very unimpressive. I was expecting more from all the hype I heard about the guy. Did anyone see those stupid floaters he took?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

The Champ, we did in the live blog, and also check my comment at 8:53 pm

  • jcoo

i cant even believe varejo was named as competition..

  • http://slamonline.com Matt Lawyue

@the Champ: I commented on that in cover it live! it was sick..

  • http://www.lkz.cn Darksaber

I expected the Greek game to change now that they got Sofo and Fotsis back, but either their coach is stooopid (Kauslauskas usually isn’t) or his players don’t listen. Chucking up brick after brick from 3pt range and are getting killed by the turkish bigs. Erdem and Asik are just dunking allover Bourousis and co. i thought the 39 attempted 3′s vs China were an aberration. i was wrong. it’s 72:54 with 7mins to go.

  • http://www.lkz.cn Darksaber

Ersan Ilyasova, facemask and all, is killing the Greek team from downtown. 6-6 so far, all pretty much splash into the net.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Darksaber
    I love that dude’s game.

  • gaber

    powerhouse of greece

  • http://www.lkz.cn Darksaber

Allenp: He was the stud for Turkey tonight (26pts), they beat Greece by 11 (and it could have been more). Greece has Bourousis their huge center taking 3 pointers and dude has low post skills when he plays for Olympiakos! this MUST be a strategy thing, they just keep on chucking 3′s…
oh damn, i gotta go to bed, i’m beat.

  • http://www.lkz.cn Darksaber

Wait, Lithuania beat SPAIN? when i changed channels in the 2nd qtr, team Whine was up by a dozen points, and Gasol was just eating the slim LIT defenders up in the post. Wow, Spain sure as hell are overrated this WBC. Good for Lithuania, Kleiza has come a long way.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

yeap, exactly as i told you again (unfortunatelly this time)….

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@Dark….:you are unbeliavable,… so last years tournament in Poland (where Spain aslo started slow and finally won easily) never happened to you..?? Ok, judging by previous comments, you most propably don’t know what i’m talking about (2009 european championship in Poland, Spain loses to Turkey and has problems in other games also) and at the same time they are missing Gasol now, BUT writting off the best basketball team in the world the last 5 years so easily and calling it overated (yeap, i read this also here, thanks SLAM !!) is really “funny”….

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

i always liked Iliasova but today he was simply amazing, Tanievic(turkish coach for many years, one of the best in europe) said that they were lucky to have him in such a great form today, and he also said that he is proud about succesfully executing their team strategy to stop Spanoulis…indeed Iliasova was the guy that kept Turkey in front with amazing shots whenever we where about to take the lead or come close to 1 basket…anyway, congratulations to Turkey for a historic win (one of their players said that this was the biggest day of his career) and for a really pasionate but civilized atmosphere in the stadium.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

Most propably for Greece it is much better to finish 3rd instead of second, meaning it is better for us to intetionally lose from Russia on Thursday (i know how it sounds)….if we win against Russia (we are much better at this moment, they are actually with a B-team, not like U.S..) we likely play Spain in the “sweet 16″ and then we definitely play U.S. in the “elit-8″, not the easiest road to a medal(to say the least)….BUT if we manage to lose from Russia, we avoid both great teams till the end…(not bad).Under Giannakis that kind of manipulations where unthicable, i don’t know now, kazlauskas is not Greek, just a pro that wants to go us far us possible….well, that’s when INTERNATIONAL tournaments get “interesting”….stay tuned!!!!

  • Jon

    Dumb greek

  • http://Www.lkz.net Darksaber

102 three’s in 3 games at a 33% success rate, with a center shooting 2-8 against Turkey, yep, that strategy translates to medals.

  • http://Www.lkz.net Darksaber

Rolando Blackman as an assistant coach on the turkish bench was a nice surprise.

  • http://Www.lkz.net Darksaber

Wow, just saw the rest of LIT vs ESP. Nice businesslike approach by the guys in green. That team is full of guys who do all the little things you need to win (especially Pocius and Maciulis). Just erased Spain’s double digit lead mid 4th quarter by playing some fantastic D.
