Post Up: Nuggs Sting Hornets

And a broken Wade = 3-2 series lead for ATL.

by Holly MacKenzie /@stackmack

Ahhhh my fellow Post Up people, it’s gotta be a short one today. I just got home from work and I’ve gotta get to sleep because I’ve got a lot of work to do tomorrow am before another night shift.

Yes, that’s right, I will be watching Game 6 of the Boston/Chi series at work, in front of people where my girlie squeals will have to be contained. Curses and swears will be allowed though. That’s the beauty of working for a sports network. Particularly one that is “Home for the Hardcore”. Yup, perfect fit, I’d say.

I am postively jacked for this game though. (also… gotta admit, a little, teeny-tiny bit worried it’s going to be like Game 3…. okay, enough of that negative talk. I demand a Game 7). Rondo vs. Rose. BG vs. the world. It’s been an unreal series has it not? I was watching clips from Game 2, where Ray Allen and Ben Gordon had the UConn shootout. Doesn’t it feel like that was weeks and weeks ago? Crazy.

I suppose I should talk about the action that happened last night.

Well, the Hawks killed Dwyane’s Heat. I do NOT understand why Wade was called for a flagrant foul when he was clearly going for the ball, but I digress. Seeing him crumpled up on the floor is never a good look, particularly in the playoffs. Seeing Al Horford being helped to the locker room wasn’t fun either.

Seeing Josh Smith attempt a wild, circus-between-the-legs dunk with the game already out of reach for the Heat should have annoyed me, but it didn’t. That guy can get away with anything. Same as JR Smith.

JR was jacking three-pointers with abandon in the Nuggets blowout against the Hornets. I know it’s his former team so he’s jacked. It’s the first time Melo had been out of the first-round and the first time the Nuggets have advanced since 1994. Still, GK should have had those guys out of the game way before the final minute.

The score was tied at the half and then NOH just died. No Tyson Chandler in that one and it was sad to watch Chris Paul helplessly fight his way through a disappointing end to the season.

Chris and Deron out of the playoffs and Rondo’s averaging a triple-double in the series. I’m not debating anyone’s greatness, I’m just sayin. To everyone who tried to tell me that Rondo is only good because of the players around him kindly step off and admit you were very, very wrong.

So, you all know I love KG. I love his heart and his passion and that he finally got a ring last season. I LOVE “this is for ‘Sota” and his emotion and inability to keep his tears in check when he’s joyous. I even love that he had me crying tears of joy rather than sorrow when he took out the Lakers. Seeing him with that stupid “NBA Champions” hat on gave me chills.

You know what I don’t love? Foolishness like this.

Ben Gordon just played 50 minutes on one leg. He busted his ass and he drew a foul on your teammate Tony Allen for three free throws that tied the game. Your team was one flagrant/non-flagrant foul call away from going into double-overtime or potentially losing this game. You are in a suit. I understand that you are happy/thrilled/proud/overwhelmed with mfer’s for your guys. Still, this is unacceptable.

Props to BG for calmly walking on by.

Orlando/Philly minus Dwight and Courtney Lee. Who’ve you got?

My favorite injury of the playoffs was Lee’s,  listed on Yahoo! Sports as “blow to head”

One more thing: Let’s go Portland. I’m all about forcing the Game 7. I’d like to see Roy drain floaters over Yao some more, too.

Okay, it’s about time for me to get going or I won’t make it through my day today. Tell me your thoughts on last night’s action, what you think is going down tonight and anything else you think my life will benefit from knowing.

    I was wrong.

  • Co Co Posted: Apr.30 at 9:14 am
Seeing Wade crumpled on the floor is a regular occurrence in any game. At this point no one should be alarmed.

  • WhaHuh Posted: Apr.30 at 9:15 am
Lee has a broken sinus, how can someone have favourite injuries?

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 9:18 am
Does that make it ok for me to say I was thrilled to see Al hobble off like a busted up Fred Sanford, Co Co? Stay classy, lady.

  • TADOne Posted: Apr.30 at 9:23 am
I wonder how many hours JR Smith has actually sat in the chair at the tattoo parlor?

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 9:24 am
Allright……is it allowable to speak of the Nuggets in actual contender talks now? If they continue playing like they did in round 1….they are going to be hell.

  • TADOne Posted: Apr.30 at 9:26 am
Don’t be stupid, E. They will merely be a roadbump for the Lakeshow.

  • TADOne Posted: Apr.30 at 9:27 am
    Moron.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 9:28 am
Think the NBA can advertise the Carmello v Lebron thing to its full potential?

  • TADOne Posted: Apr.30 at 9:29 am
Ok, i’m off for training. I’ll be delighted to see what names Eboy has called me when I return.

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 9:33 am
I have one I could pull out…..but it wouldn’t be appropriate.

  • Co Co Posted: Apr.30 at 9:33 am
If Al were a drama queen it would be fine. But, unlike The Nature Boy when Al was writhing around on the floor in pain it wasn’t in attempt to get attention. I know you love Wade, but seriously he’s a drama queen.

  • Myung Posted: Apr.30 at 9:50 am
I thought he would get carted off in a wheel chair…

  • Bryan Posted: Apr.30 at 9:50 am
The nuggets are the only team that would scare me if I was the lakers.

  • Myung Posted: Apr.30 at 9:53 am
The two J. Smiths (Josh and JR) from the 2004 Draft keep it classy, always.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.30 at 9:55 am
Regarding the rejection attempt by Wade, if this were FIBA ball, a flagrant would have been automatic. I was shocked last summer when Fiba changed the rules regarding breakaways. Basically if you are behind the ballhandler, and you put a finger on em while they are making their move, it’s an automatic flagrant file. Lamest rulechange ever. Luckily most referee’s i’ve experienced since didn’t get the memo. So since this is the nba, and Flash goes for every rejection he can, that wasn’t a flagrant.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.30 at 10:01 am
I smell a sequel to that cool Brangelina flick, starring Josh & Jr. Mr and Mr. Smith.

  • Rasheedionics Posted: Apr.30 at 10:02 am
KG wasn’t screaming at Ben Gordon. Look at the picture more carefully. It’s an optical illusion. By the time KG was screaming, Ben already passed him long time ago. Ben Gordon is much closer to the camera than KG. It’s just looks like they’re next to each other.`

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.30 at 10:11 am
oh i know the Nuggs are the consensus slamonline pick to advance and play the Fakers later. But hey, on paper the Spurs were the pick to throw the Mavs out in round 1 too. (not to mention only Juks had the guts to predict Mavs in 5) So they beat the Mavs 4x this season, etc. And i have a fair amount of respect for the Denver Carolina Blues, no doubt. But the Mavs kicked Butt as much as Karl’s team so far. Why don’t we postpone the Nuggets coronation until they’ve truly beat Dallas? Thanx y’all.

  • Myung Posted: Apr.30 at 10:15 am
I DO agree that it shouldn’t have been a flagrant. It doesn’t mean I wasn’t happy with the call (c’mon, I’m a biased Hawks fan)…but it was a BS call that I think Heat fans are justified to feel upset by (but if you remember, the Hawks had the exact same thing happen when Smith was called for a flagrant on Matt Harpring a few months ago…the fall was worse than the foul). I also think Stern being 50 feet away from the action may have prompted the refs to call the flagrant. I’m just wondering what happened to “playoff” basketball. I grew up watching ball in the late 80′s and 90′s. In this series, the refs are calling EVERYTHING. It’s ridiculous. Both teams are being penalized by touch fouls. Just let them play ball.

  • Krishan Posted: Apr.30 at 10:49 am
    I agree with bryan

  • Krishan Posted: Apr.30 at 10:52 am
Also I concur with rasheedionics. It is an optical illusion. What you don’t see is that Jose Calderon was behind gordon at the time.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 10:52 am
I’m pretty sure the Nuggs are the third best team in the NBA right now.
When the Nuggets shoot the rock like they have against NO they have a shot at beating anybody. I’d LOVE to see them upset the Fakeshow.
Carmelo looks very solid, JR is finally having more good games than bad, and Chauncey isjust doing Chauncey while Nene and Birdman have really stepped up the physical play/shotblocking inside.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 10:53 am
welcome to the second round boys. it’s been 6 years but we made it

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 10:55 am
Anyone else find it odd that the first round has been one of the most exciting first rounds in a while, all while the officiating has probably been the worst it has ever been when a referee wasn’t on the take from the mob?

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:02 am
agree with jukai 100%. for the most part, it’s lived up to the hype. un like last year. and do u guys think the TNT cast realizes that we can see their feet. i mean suits and un-matching sneakers? not a good look

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 11:03 am
Denver might win the west this year. New Orleans is a harder team to play then Utah, yet Denver completely showed them up, while LA struggled. I think these are all indications of stuff…..

  • vtrobot Posted: Apr.30 at 11:03 am
Thanks, Holly. ROOONNDOOOOO! Can’t wait for tonight. It’s amazing to see how much respect everyone (not just Bulls fans, but b-ball fans) have lost for KG during this series. Unfortunately, even if he’s was aware of that, I don’t think he’d change. I think the Nuggs aren’t going to treat Dirk nicely. He’ll be wishing for the days when an opponent was gently caressing his face. Nate should just play Roy at the 1, Rudy, Outlaw, LaMarcus, and Oden for the whole game. Except put Ghostface in when Oden fouls out in the 1st. How many quality 3′s is that team going to have when Martell comes back next year. Is there another team on which a D. Miles comeback had less of a chance?

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 11:15 am
Nugs have impressed me the most so far this post season. I think they had a better first round opponent than LA or Cleveland, and they absolutely murdered them. I didn’t think the CB vs. CP matchup would be so lopsided. I thought they’d both play well, but CB pwn’d him real bad. CB has been the best PG in the playoffs so far by a long shot, and one of the best players period. Melo has really been impressing me alot lately too. He’s really adjusted his game well.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 11:16 am
I’m glad Meloman called that out. I used to think it was just Charles being lazy, rocking the white Nikes with a brown/black suit, but now I see its Kenny and Ernie as well!
There is a way to pull off sneaks witha suit, just make sure the colors match and try to find a slimmer silhouette.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Apr.30 at 11:17 am
Optical illusion? So how do explain this: http://www.tremendousupsidepotential.com/assets_c/2009/04/hatehatehatehatehate-thumb-500×507-9769.jpg

  • Bruno Posted: Apr.30 at 11:17 am
I used to like KG … now f@ck KG and all the celtics

  • Fred34 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:18 am
Denver is for real this time round huh? Nice. Let’s hope they all stay healthy and give us another great series.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 11:19 am
    ^ except Rondo. He’s incredible.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Apr.30 at 11:19 am
I actually used to like KG. How long ago that seems now…

  • Drew Posted: Apr.30 at 11:20 am
The Nuggets got past the first round, and the monkey is off their back. It was a blast.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 11:20 am
    EVERYONE used to like KG

  • Fred34 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:21 am
Khalid – when can we expect your next piece? Da fans wanna know . . .

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 11:21 am
The only thing that makes me worry about Denver is how satisfied they seem with the first round victory. The first round don’t mean sh1t.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:27 am
don’t worry coik. Chauncey is there to guide them when they get too happy

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 11:30 am
Micheal Vick is a construction worker…

  • Myles Brown Posted: Apr.30 at 11:30 am
    I still like KG.

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 11:35 am
    ^liar

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 11:41 am
    beat it like a cop.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 11:54 am
More people liked KG before because he was the underdog. Now that he’s won one and is on top he’s getting the hate that comes with that. I still like him despite the fact that he’s on the Celtics.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Apr.30 at 11:56 am
you like KG huh, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQaVvf2VOsc&feature=channel that’s kg, he sux

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:56 am
Steve Smith is slowly creeping up on Reggie Miller as the NBA’s most annoying commentator

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.30 at 12:02 pm
no way. That “honour” is Reggie’s for life.

  • Double J Posted: Apr.30 at 12:02 pm
i don’t like KG, he seriously had a stroke. turned from this nice awesome competitor in minnesota, to this douche bag, screaming lunatic in boston. too much change can result in head trauma, KG did this happen to you?

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Apr.30 at 12:06 pm
Lakers fan or not, just watch the video …

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 12:11 pm
Simon……I watched a minute of it…..why would I care about the trapping system the Celts used to try and deny Kobe spots? It’s a 10 minute video made by a crying Laker fan, isn’t it?

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Apr.30 at 12:12 pm
That dude in Simon’s video is a whiney little b!tch with to much time on his hands.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Apr.30 at 12:12 pm
Meloman, NO WAY. Reggie Miller is in a class all his own. Eric Snow is pretty damn boring too. Everytime I watch him I get sleepy. But Reggie? He’s bad on every gradeable level.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 12:14 pm
LOL yea but Steve Smith always seems like he has no clue what hes talking about

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 12:16 pm
and was David West seriously an all-star this year? this guys has to be one of the most overated players in the league

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Apr.30 at 12:17 pm
Dude actually said Jordan had the luxury of playing isolation basketball against smaller defeners in a “watered down era”, then said credited Boston with playing the toughest defence in the history of the world. To top it off claimed that the video was totally unbiased. The first 2 letters of his Youtube account name? “KB”.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Apr.30 at 12:18 pm
sorry, watch after 7:00 minutes, your lovely kg is there…

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Apr.30 at 12:23 pm
Everyone already knows, if KG had ANY other day job than professional athlete, he would have spent much of the last 10 or so years in various forms of mental instiutions. I hear they frown on walking on all 4′s and the repetive use of the word c0ck-sucker, at FEDEX.

  • Allenp Posted: Apr.30 at 12:34 pm
    The Nuggets are talented.
But, we can’t tell how great they are based on playing the Hornets.
That’s like deciding whether Chris Paul is the best point guard in the game after watching him be defended by Jason Kidd.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 12:35 pm
Jamal Mashburn is ATLEAST as bad as Steve Smith

  • Allenp Posted: Apr.30 at 12:38 pm
I still like KG, but just a little bit less.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Apr.30 at 12:38 pm
Some of the sh*t said in that video is laughable, Jordan did play against less athletic defenders that werent allowed to zone up, but it was hardly a ‘watered down era’. However, the vid is still useful to those who admonished Kobe for not just taking it to the hole and taking the series over. Like I said, it was f*cking impossible. I will no longer speak of Mr.Bryant until the second round starts. Carry on.

  • Anton Posted: Apr.30 at 12:46 pm
    KG ruins the party
Like he eats all the frosting
    I love Derrick Rose
    Like McAdams loves Gosling

  • e Posted: Apr.30 at 12:49 pm
if they nuggets continue to play this way theyll upset la and rondo has tremondously improved even though i dont like his game

  • Drew Posted: Apr.30 at 1:07 pm
The Pistons that Jordan played against were hardly “watered-down” defenders.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 1:23 pm
Obviously the dude is biased, and a LOT of that video was camera angles (a lot of those ‘hand checks’ were just players holding their arm out infront of Kobe and not actually touching him, which you’re allowed to do) but that video brings up a LOT of great points, and definitely shows a LOT of dirty plays that weren’t called. It’s actually worth a watch.
I also HATE when people say Jordan could average 45 in this day and age. As the video points out, Jordan never had to deal with zone defenses and ticky-tac charges like in this day and age. Sure, he may average 50, or he may average 20. It’s impossible to tell.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 1:24 pm
Then again, according to grandpa Eboy, the Pistons were just punching people in the face back then and no fouls were called, so maybe I’m wrong.

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 1:32 pm
A lot of dirty plays? Were you referencing each time Kobe got stripped or blocked and he threw his “follow through” elbow at the different guys that di*ked him? Nah…….you’re too stupid to see things like that. Of course you wouldn’t.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 1:48 pm
Eboy: Well, if you watched more than a minute of the video, you would have seen Kobe tripped twice when he was going for a layup, and punched in the leg once. Without multiple camera angles, we have no way to gauge how hard these were, nor do I think they were done to purposefully injure Kobe (a common Spurs tactic), only to throw his shot off. A lot of the block/strip footage on Kobe was so obvious that he was legit getting stripped.

  • Herfdawg Posted: Apr.30 at 1:48 pm
@Anton: WE HAVE A KID ROCK SIGHTING! also, KG is old and overrated, Rondo is the man, Rose is a born leader, Denver is very good, the West is STILL better than the East by a long shot, and LA will win the chip in 5 over the Cavs.

  • Z Posted: Apr.30 at 1:54 pm
I watched every minute of every game during last year’s finals and at no time did I ever think ‘wow, Kobe is getting mauled out there’. It was just VERY VERY VERY good team defense and crisp rotations. Getting to the basket against the Celts last year was not ‘f-cking impossible’ but very hard to do and Kob couldn’t do it. Am I the only one that’s seeing that he’s not going to the hole like he used to?! People age, nahmean.

  • clapzilla Posted: Apr.30 at 2:00 pm
The Mavs-Nuggets Series Might Be More Venomous Than The Celtics-Bulls. Cuban Will Send 40 Tapes To The League About JR’s “Reckless” Actiona And 50 More About Kenyon & Nene Roughing Up His Guys. Melo’s Gonna Keep Putting 30+ On Them, Dampier Is Back To His ’06 Form, Kidd & Chauncey Are Gonna Go At It For Old Time’s Sake, This Is Gonna Be A Fun Series. Denver Should Take It In 6, 5 If They’re Lucky.

  • Tzvi T Posted: Apr.30 at 2:06 pm
I’m only gonna say it once, listen close, J.R Smith has the makeup of a top10 offensive player in the L; his mental just isnt right.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 2:20 pm
Z: So, the dude doctored the video?

  • Myles Brown Posted: Apr.30 at 2:39 pm
Kobe, Bron, Wade, Melo, Paul, Deron, Roy, Howard, Yao, Al, Parker, Ginobili, Butler, and were still nowhere close to JR Smith…

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 3:22 pm
Myles: He meant OFFENSIVE. You know, a guy who would offend you. He did spit on a woman and rip her dress.

  • Esco Posted: Apr.30 at 3:33 pm
I do believe he said that he had the “makeup” of a top 10 offensive player, not that he was one. So ofcourse he is nowhere close to those guys, but maybe, just maybe if he got his head on right, he can make some noise on that end of the floor and be regarded as a player to never leave open. You would not put BG in that group either, but he’s just as cold blooded as the others. But his game is only putting the ball in the basket. Such as JR’s kinda is right now.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Apr.30 at 3:57 pm
It was still a declarative statement, that based on the sheer number of talented/skilled players who have more of the appropriate mental acumen necessary to be a top ten offensive talent, has little to no chance of ever being true. That’s all.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 4:52 pm
Uh, I’m not sure if AI is still actually better than JR. Like if I had to pick one of those two guys to be on the Spurs for the next 1 or 2 seasons it would be JR, no doubt about it.
I’m not saying that JR actually is a top 10 offensive talent in the L, but I’m just pointing out that AI (and sadly, maybe Ginobili) shouldn’t still be ranked higher.
For instance, I’d rather have JR than Ben Gordon. Yes, JR is still somewhat of a nut case, but I think some of that stemmed from not knowing if he was gonna play 3 minutes or 23. As his role solidifies I think his game will be less insecure and he’ll allow the shots to “come to him” more often. And when he’s hot from three he’s a straight up one man army.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 4:56 pm
*I’m clearly a JR fan and want him to ascend further in the L*
But what I REALLY want to see is him light Kobe up with a few ridiculous threes and send Kobe swirling into his selfish psychopath zone. I don’t know who would come out on top in a shot for shot duel(probably Kobe) but I could definitely see JR getting the best of him in a game or two.

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 5:25 pm
Since i owe Anton this—————————– Dear Sir/Ma’am/Tranny: You are a good person. I am inspired and honored to be remotely near your presence. Your aura you project is 100% of the reason i am the person i am today. Thank you for letting me be privileged enough to lose a bet to you and get the honor of telling you things that i am sure nobody in ‘real’ life would. Love, BET

  • Anton Posted: Apr.30 at 6:20 pm
    It wasn’t 500 words. :(

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.30 at 11:50 pm
i swear i was Ciolkstar in a past life

  • Myles Brown Posted: May.1 at 12:20 am
I forgot about Kevin Durant. And Paul Pierce. And Gilbert Arenas, Dirk Nowitzki, and Joe Johnson. Oh, and Danny Granger. And probably a few dozen others too. Anyone who thinks that J.R. Smith could be equally productive as the primary option of a team as the aforementioned players needs to pass the blunt. Hes pretty dangerous as the third option behind a Melo & A.I. or Chauncey, but dat about it.

  • Sarah Posted: May.1 at 12:45 am
I know I’m your average “boring purist/Spurs fan” or whatever you wanna call it, but watching JR bomb threes is pretty fun. It’s almost as fun as watching the Golden State Team in ’07. Almost haha. I honestly miss that team. Just indulging my basketball guilty pleasures.

  • Darksaber Posted: May.1 at 2:16 am
    JESUS (Shuttlesworth, that is).

  • Hisham Posted: May.1 at 6:59 am
@ Myles, all these players that you named are indeed better thta JR Smith. But do they really have that much more raw talent? I think that JR Smith, with the right mental state and work ethic, could rival any player in this league in terms of offensive power. Of course, JR lacks these characteristics, so this is all very hypothetical

  • Hisham Posted: May.1 at 7:00 am
    *better than*

  • Hisham Posted: May.1 at 7:01 am
I bet he’s crying in bed that he didn’t get 53 points, Dark

  • Darksaber Posted: May.1 at 7:34 am
so true, Hish. Still an outstanding performance by one of my all time favorite players

  • Tyquan Posted: May.1 at 11:33 am
I hate to say it and I watched enough hoops to know what time it is but New Orleans seemed like a team on the rise but they attempted to make a bogus trade that blew up in their face regarding Tyson Chandler and all. Denver on the other hand showed you how to destroy a team in six days.
