The Post Up: Throwing ‘Bows

Paul Pierce will rip your heart out.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Awesome. Just awesome. So awesome. That was awesome.

That was the extent of an im conversation I had with a fellow beat writer last night during the Celtics/Bulls insta-classic Game 4. Two of the chattiest, wordiest, loudest people in Toronto and we were reduced to throwing the word awesome back and forth for upwards of an hour. Honestly, this series is amazing.

Awesome, amazing, whatever the hell you want to call it, it’s fun.

Three overtime games out of five, one double-overtime. Ray Allen fouled out of this one, and while there is no KG, there is still a guy named Paul Pierce. With the shine that’s been surrounding Rondo, I slipped up and forgot. Until he drilled jumper after jumper after jumper to close out the game.

Ben Gordon also was playing with one good leg. I’m a little bit worried about that gimpy, strained hamstring when it comes to Thursday and Game 6. Playing 50+ minutes really hurts when they don’t get the W. BG continued to shoot and shoot and shoot. Shooting himself into it while appearing to shoot the Bulls out of it, then BAM, the guy would knock down the most ridiculous shot of the night. Then do it again a few plays later.

He’s crazy.

Twitter of the night came from our boy @russbengtson: “Ben Gordon is playing h-o-r-s-e with God

And the response from Ben Collins via im: “While Jesus watches from the bench

(Allen had fouled out at that point).

I love the SLAM-fam. I love these playoffs.

I don’t love seeing Tim Duncan look absolutely shellshocked as he watches the clock wind down and realizes he is going down in the first round for the first tme in his career. Yes, this is a first-time, first-round exit for a healthy TD. I went through this with an editor last week. The Spurs went down in 2000 in the first round (to the Suns), but TD was out with a torn lateral meniscus.

Not a bad run for Timmy, hey? It still hurt.

It was fun to see Josh Howard play well. Terry and Barea are fun as well. How does Barea get one rebound let alone five?

Dwight = suspended for Game 6? Could it be? If we listen to the TNT and NBATV crew, it should be. If you missed it, Howard threw a nasty little elbow at Sam Dalembert. It was a pretty hard hit and I’m surprised he wasn’t tossed from the game. The Magic got the W in this one as Dwight had 10 offensive rebounds and 24 total. That’s monstrous.

Dalembert wasn’t the only one with an elbow from Dwight. Courtney Lee fell victim to an errant Dwight elbow and had to be taken to the hospital for cautionary tests. Not sure on his status for Game 6.

Portland pulled out the W at home, so happy to see that for the Blazer-faithful!

B. Roy had a three over Shane Battier that was one of the prettiest shots I’d seen all night. Then, he goes at Yao and hits a floater over him and it was beautiful. Why can’t he be aggressive every single time down the floor? He’s too good to be passive.

Seeing JJ Redick on the floor for a playoff game still surprises me.

We’ve got MIA/ATl tonight and I’m praying for a healthy Dwyane Wade. I want a good game guys, no more crazy runs while the other team goes into a drought, lets pick up where C’s/Bulls left off.

New Olreans/Denver. Yeah. Unless Chris Paul scores 58 points I don’t see this series going beyond tonight. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope so. I’m just thankful I’m not liveblogging this one. That game was in my nightmares last night. Horrrrr-i-ble.

Okay, that’s enough from me today. Tell me your thoughts on last night.

I posted this on Twitter yesterday, but wanted to link to it here as well.

This is love:

MJ Trophy

Gets me every time.

    Larry Bird couldn’t play D…..?

  • vtrobot

wait, doesn’t everyone always say that doc is a horrible coach? shouldn’t that cancel out the excuse that vinny is garbage? yeah, prolly shoulda doubled PP and let Steph take the shot (or think about it and then pass it to Rondo).

Doesn’t take a genius to see Del Negro can’t coach. NOBODY else on the C’s was hitting in the OT. Force the ball out of his hands, keep him out of the middle of the floor. Send him left and throw an aggressive double at him to get the ball out of his hands. If Bulls lose to a Rondo or Marbury jump shot – live with it. Most likely, a shot from either of them isn’t going in. Just dumb dumb dumb coaching. Furthermore, Brad Miller should have taken the jumpshot. He was WIDE OPEN and is a FAR better shooter than he is at taking ANYTHING to the basket. The moment he put the ball on the floor to go to the hole, Chicago were in trouble.

I’m sorry, but I’m still in a state of shock so I have to repost this yet again…

Do not get avery johnson. The last thing rose needs is a coach like avery.

  • Harlem_World

As for the Rondo foul being flagrant – GTFOH with that. This is the PLAYOFFS. Last play of the game and you want to give him shots PLUS possession on a foul that was not malicious in intent, but intended to stop him getting a shot off. And the tears? GTFOH with that too! You a PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER and SEVEN FEET TALL. DUNK THE BALL.

  • Diesel

Harlem – that play was in slow motion. I think Tyrus or Noah would have had a dunk by the time Miller took his 2nd step. Jukai – I agree Bird could play D. Seed must not appreciate men with mustaches. You don’t win that many championships without playing good D.

  • Diesel

Harlem – a flagrant foul has nothing to do with intent. He hit his face and was no where near the ball. Flip the tables…if miller was hitting rondo like that it’d be a flagrant for sure. You try hitting 2 high pressure free throws after just get slapped across the face.

  • Harlem_World

Diesel, its the last play of overtime. Do you really think any ref is ever going to call a flagrant in that situation? Come on man…

  • Diesel

I would. I’m under the belief that a foul is a foul no matter what point of the game. Same with a flagrant. I’m not saying that’s why the Bulls lost the game though. Even if it was a flagrant miller missed the shot and Bulls would still need to hit a last second shot. The Bulls lost this game because of poor coaching with a sprinkle of horrible reffing.

Diesel: SEED is a Lakers fan, and a dillusional one at that, so that’s one thing… but Bird could not only play defense, he was downright GREAT at it. I have childhood memories of Bird downright shutting dudes down, blocking their shots from behind. It’s downright insane that SEED thinks that way.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Kobe > LeBron.
    AI > Billups
    Paul = Williams
    Yao = Howard
    Durant > Oden
Rondo = Howard = Flagrant Foul.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Actually, on offense Yao > Howard.
    Defense Howard > Yao.
    Hence, Yao = Howard

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That is, if their teammates actually PASS it to Yao and/or Howard.

Juks, just to make sure you see it. This is about whether Nash as always been an atrocious defender or if it’s just his back kicking in:
”It didn’t take a Nobel Prize winner to figure out this guy’s pretty good. It was just a case of hoping that none of the big names came around.”[8] However, Davey (Santa Clara coach) told Nash that he was “the worst defensive player” he had ever seen.”
    You fail.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Remember when danny ainge said steve nash was a good defender in slam mag ?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Not at all. When did he say that?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

It was in nashty’s first feature I think right after he signed with dallas.

    Birdman > Bird.

  • vmcb

    I love Waiting for Godot.

  • Harlem_World

Diesel, the game doesn’t work that way. End of game situation, if a ref calls a flagrant on the last play of the game, you’d never hear the end of it not only from Celtics fans but everybody else too. Fair to make him go to the line and earn it, which he clearly didn’t do. He should have either taken the open 15 footer (WIDE OPEN) or dunked it. What business does a 7foot NBA player have trying to lay the ball up with the game on the line??

  • Tavoris

Z, what’s really funny is that Nash appears to be a better defender than he really is. He does an excellent job of “appearing” to do all the right things. It sucks, cuz the Suns ask him to do sooooooooo much offensively, that I can’t imagine him having any energy on the other end.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Tavoris I think Nash is “doing the right things” but he is doing them at a High School (defensive) skill level so it has no real effect thats IMO though

Nash is the one PG that I can recall that actively looks to draw charges… what more do you want from the guy?…
    -
Brad Miller was trying to miss that 2nd free throw….wasn’t he? O_o
    -
Ben Gordon is laying it all on the line this post season…he’s hamstring will be ham gravy after it’s all said and done…
    -
time for more money! (he sang with Lewis and david lee in harmony)…
