The Post Up: Throwing ‘Bows

Paul Pierce will rip your heart out.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Awesome. Just awesome. So awesome. That was awesome.

That was the extent of an im conversation I had with a fellow beat writer last night during the Celtics/Bulls insta-classic Game 4. Two of the chattiest, wordiest, loudest people in Toronto and we were reduced to throwing the word awesome back and forth for upwards of an hour. Honestly, this series is amazing.

Awesome, amazing, whatever the hell you want to call it, it’s fun.

Three overtime games out of five, one double-overtime. Ray Allen fouled out of this one, and while there is no KG, there is still a guy named Paul Pierce. With the shine that’s been surrounding Rondo, I slipped up and forgot. Until he drilled jumper after jumper after jumper to close out the game.

Ben Gordon also was playing with one good leg. I’m a little bit worried about that gimpy, strained hamstring when it comes to Thursday and Game 6. Playing 50+ minutes really hurts when they don’t get the W. BG continued to shoot and shoot and shoot. Shooting himself into it while appearing to shoot the Bulls out of it, then BAM, the guy would knock down the most ridiculous shot of the night. Then do it again a few plays later.

He’s crazy.

Twitter of the night came from our boy @russbengtson: “Ben Gordon is playing h-o-r-s-e with God

And the response from Ben Collins via im: “While Jesus watches from the bench

(Allen had fouled out at that point).

I love the SLAM-fam. I love these playoffs.

I don’t love seeing Tim Duncan look absolutely shellshocked as he watches the clock wind down and realizes he is going down in the first round for the first tme in his career. Yes, this is a first-time, first-round exit for a healthy TD. I went through this with an editor last week. The Spurs went down in 2000 in the first round (to the Suns), but TD was out with a torn lateral meniscus.

Not a bad run for Timmy, hey? It still hurt.

It was fun to see Josh Howard play well. Terry and Barea are fun as well. How does Barea get one rebound let alone five?

Dwight = suspended for Game 6? Could it be? If we listen to the TNT and NBATV crew, it should be. If you missed it, Howard threw a nasty little elbow at Sam Dalembert. It was a pretty hard hit and I’m surprised he wasn’t tossed from the game. The Magic got the W in this one as Dwight had 10 offensive rebounds and 24 total. That’s monstrous.

Dalembert wasn’t the only one with an elbow from Dwight. Courtney Lee fell victim to an errant Dwight elbow and had to be taken to the hospital for cautionary tests. Not sure on his status for Game 6.

Portland pulled out the W at home, so happy to see that for the Blazer-faithful!

B. Roy had a three over Shane Battier that was one of the prettiest shots I’d seen all night. Then, he goes at Yao and hits a floater over him and it was beautiful. Why can’t he be aggressive every single time down the floor? He’s too good to be passive.

Seeing JJ Redick on the floor for a playoff game still surprises me.

We’ve got MIA/ATl tonight and I’m praying for a healthy Dwyane Wade. I want a good game guys, no more crazy runs while the other team goes into a drought, lets pick up where C’s/Bulls left off.

New Olreans/Denver. Yeah. Unless Chris Paul scores 58 points I don’t see this series going beyond tonight. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope so. I’m just thankful I’m not liveblogging this one. That game was in my nightmares last night. Horrrrr-i-ble.

Okay, that’s enough from me today. Tell me your thoughts on last night.

I posted this on Twitter yesterday, but wanted to link to it here as well.

This is love:

MJ Trophy

Gets me every time.

Hi Holly. Just a tiny correction: on the second line, it shoud read “[...] during the Celtics/Bulls insta-classic Game 5.” instead of “Game 4″. (feel free to delete this comment). As always, I love your writing, keep it up!

Since I don’t wanna talk about the Rox, I got a few points.
    1) That picture always makes my heart seem to skip a beat.
    2) Just a shout out to Curren$y- This Aint No Mixtape is his best work by far! ( I know DP has my back on this).
    3) Dwight should probably be sitting on the bench for game 6. Agreed.
    4) Happy Birthday Josh Howard!
    5) Glad to have you back Holly, I missed yesterday entirely!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

So… who wants to help me out with analysing the differences between Act 1 and Act 2 of ‘Waiting for Godot’? I promise you’ll get a shout-out in my references and bibliography.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Holly, the end of this post up, while simple, might be the best ending to a post I’ve ever seen. I actually got a little emotional seeing that picture. Spine still tingling. Also love the Ben Collins line haha Guy is a genius.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

    Hursty:If you put down:
    “Act 1:Waiting for Godot.
    Act2:Still waiting for Godot.
    Act3:Godot still not here.
    Act4:Godots stumbles in drunk.Everyone p*ssed.”
as your analysis,I’ll give you money.

Wade shoulda been second in DPOY voting and in MVP voting too

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

lol Izzo. Thanks for the advice. I’ll use you as a footnote for ‘ways of thinking in the post-nuclear age- as described by an Irishman who once tried to make his own alcohol’.
    Hisham- is that for Jukai?
Oh, and I’m still waiting for Godot. As if the bloke didnt know how ‘boot’ translates from French to English. He played the literary field like a piper did Beckett.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

i can’t think of anything else

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

    yeah that was for Jukai

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Beckett is probably the best Irish dramatist who wrote in French ever.Yes,even better than Kobe.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Izzo: If Kobe had a healthy Bynum, he would have been the best Irish dramatist who wrote in French ever. Just wait till next year.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

haha HurstyI only started reading books after high school, when i didn’t have to anymore, and had a choice in what to read. Book reports SUCKED. and now i’m going back to college at 25, where i imagine a lot more of that required reading happens

  • vtrobot

as always, nice job, holly. it’s great to feel your emotion and love through a lot of your writing. love or hate the guy, you have to admit that Paul Pierce was cold-blooded last night. again and again, you know where it’s going and you know what’s going to happen, AND YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING TO STOP IT. suspend rondo and dwight. get some game 7′s. more ad dollars. C’MON!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Beckett believed in Camus’s philosophical ideals, but, if Camus believed in God, and Godot never arrived in WforG, then, what does that say about Beckett? That he lost his sense of self conciousness?
Kobe would never admit that, and Chuck Norris would round-house kick you for not mentioning him in your 9:46 comment Izzo.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Hisham I actually like the topic, existentialism, post-modernism etc. It’s much better than Helen of Troy and The Penelopiad and whatever. I (not to gloat) take the highest english course available in Sydney for a high-schooler, so it’s always been relatively natural to me.
I don’t mind reading. The Magician books by Raymond E Fiest (maybe its EIST) are really good, so is The French Leftenants Woman and the Wheel of Time series (which is the greatest series of modern literature ever written. It brings new meaning to the word epic).
Modern being the last 40 years or so.
    PS- JK Rowling sucks.
    PPS- Twilight sucks even more.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

You read Twilight Hursty? That’s pretty fu*king fruity mate.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Ok fellas, have a good one today. Go Hawks! (and Rockets obviously).
    Peace.
PS- If anybody has reading shoutouts, I’ll check the board tomorrow. I’m in the closing chapters of Catch 22 right now…Heller is a genius.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy, how awesome will the upcoming Cavalier vs Hawks matchup be?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

About as awesome as a Phoenix Suns title run.

  • Tavoris

Jukai, you are in rare form this morning!

  • Harlem_World

Hursty, Waiting For Godot themes = TMac and the second round – discuss. Pop believing he’s getting back to a championship with his aged ‘big 3′- discuss. Vinny Del Negro believing he’s actually a good coach = discuss. Everybody waiting for the Marbury implosion = discuss. Anyone who believes Kobe is still better than Lebron = DISCUSS. Need any more?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

No I don’t read Twilight Eboy. Stop being a twit. If you saw my facebook you wouldn’ve seen that Edward Cullen got punched in the face 3 times ( the girls think he’s cute… idiots), Rosie O Donnell once and that moron off American Idol Ms. Screech-A- Lot as well.
I didn’t even know what Twilight was until the book came out.
I did read JK Rowling though. It was cool back as a junior.
    Now I’m going. Peace!
PS- It was totally unnecessary to go into such detail about my un-twilightness, but whatever lol.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: Hey, it sucks when the referees are working for the mob to make sure Manu gets every foul instead of working for David Stern making sure Wade gets every foul. BUT HEY that’s all in the past, just like Miami having a chance against the Hawks.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

I don’t like it when people get too uppity to see that lighter reading ie Harry Potter can be fun too. That’s like people saying that they can only appreciate movies like Casablanca but not Predator haha to name some contrasting stuff

    Nerds.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm……what do you mean you’ve read Twilight but not by choice, Izzo? Did Stephanie Meyer come to Cork and tie you down with ropes made from her ill deserved cash and force you to read it?

Doesn’t TAD watch American Idol intently every week now?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Quick question? If you guys were Brad Miller last night, after you got your face busted up, missed the free throw that could have extended the Bulls chances and then missed the rim entirely to try and make a play for the offensive rebound, then stood outside the ensuing huddle and began to tear up like a high school girl reading the Twilight movie reviews, would you have spat blood from your busted grill all over the Celts home floor or immediatley announced your retirement during the post game interviews?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: If I was Brad Miller, I’d be so hocked up on meth that I wouldn’t even know what was going on at that point

  • matt the jazz fan

(Waiting for Godot Act 2) – (Waiting for Godot Act 1) = 1

But the last chapters of Catch 22, certainly the one that takes place in Rome, is haunting and an incredible human contrast to the tongue in cheek tragedy of the military camp in Sicily.
    But that’s just me…

And now back to our regularly scheduled: Kobe > Lebron! Lebron > Kobe! Deron CP3! etc etc etc

“I have no idea what’s going on”

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@matt the jazz fan: The last few chapters of Catch 22 are haunting all right, as is the part where they reveal what actually happened on that plane to scar Yosarrian so badly.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm…..JJ Barea is garbage……Mark Cuban is a douchebag…..Dirk still is built like a female Ruth Riley.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Poor Brad Miller. Oh wait, i kinda have no opinion on the guy. As for the tearing up? i gotta say it’s a mixed bag, lovely seeing a man care so much that his emotions overpower him, but on the other hand… make a damn freethrow, wuss.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Seriously, I have no idea WTF ya’ll are talking about.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

In fairness to Brad Miller, Rondo did pretty much tear the dude’s face off and it PROBABLY shoulda been a technical foul. I don’t remember Miller’s lips being part of the ball.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I mean…..it’s not like the series ended last night and the Bulls don’t have a shot. Maybe he was just trying to make Big Baby feel better about himself.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Ummm E, luv? J.O. is a whiner…. Eric Spoelstra needs to shoot his barber (if he can call him that)…. J.O. is not fit to shine Alonzo’s shoes, let alone fill the role…. Cook is a less glorified Reggie Miller…and Wade is… ummm (arrrrgh, can’t go there, i dig the dude’s game too much). Up yours, whitehot.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I was just placating your urge for insults Dark. Your words can’t hurt me…….my skin glitters like Edward Cullen.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I actually thought that was a pretty good play drawn up by Del Negro out of the timeout. I mean, Brad Miller had a straight line to the basket. And yeah, Rondo didn’t even make a play on the ball; it should have been a technical. Boston fans have no right to complain about officiating today.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Who would have thought that Boston/Chicago would be a classic series?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm……Miller still airballed the layup before Rondo hit him…..that’s embarrasing.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

If someone yanked Eboy’s head off his shoulders, Eboy’s body would still SLAM IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

  • Enigmatic

Ain’t this some ish?! I gotta play Vladimir in a scene from Waiting for Godot for my acting class, I come into Slam Online to get away from it, and the bastard follows me in here!!!

I’m disappointed in my Bulls for last night but still proud. We weren’t even supposed to make it this far. Charles Barkley can eat a dilznick (he probably would too)and everyone else who thought the Bulls sucked.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’ve lost a couple of teeth playing ball over the years, Jukai…..it comes with the territory when you don’t make a career of playing the D level Jewish Community Center leagues you frequent and playing in the paint instead of being a terribly poor stand still jumpshooter like yourself. Luckily I’ve had dental benefits.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Rondo’s airball from 4 feet was pretty hysterical as well.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Blame that on Vinny…..Paul goes to the SAME SPOT EVERY TIME when he is isolated……how about a double? Trap him without the ball? Nothing? Let Steph make a shot? No?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m playing in a JCC league. I guess I should be offended.

Whoa… WHOA Eboy… Watch your mouth!
    I’m a terribly AVERAGE jumpshooter!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I guess TAD does too……I’ve played in those leagues too TAD…..it’s usually the most terrible basketball played in a 20 mile radius.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Average…..like Rondo average or Starbury average?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: Wilt Chamberlain free-throw shooting average. I’m as great as Wilt Chamebrlain.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Is there any way the Bulls don’t force a game 7? I think they’ll push it to the very end. Although……lost in all of this…..is it an indication of how good the Bulls have played or the fact that the Celts have stayed alive basically playing a preseason roster?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, there is actually some talent in the league I play in. Since I don’t live in South Florida weather, JCC has some of the nicest facilities and the better comp knows this, so they come. I’m sure it’s quite different down there.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Damn wish i had Nba physicians treating me. Tweaked my hamstring 24hours ago, in the 2nd minute of my final season game (championship semi’s) and couldn’t jump, let alone change direction on D. Scored 2 (18 less than my average) and out team lost. And Ben freaking Gordon is scoring like a mother… Grarrr!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    That makes sense TAD.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

That said, there are a few scrub teams as well.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Lost in all the Bulls-C’s game, why is Brad Miller in the game anyway. He had two posessions before where he missed two shots, should have made both. Thomas should have been in the game for that play and earlier, he probably would have dunked and got the foul called or took a wide open shoot-uncontested. I blame this lost on Bulls coaching and PP went to the same spot, make him drive or pull up from the left, all of his moves and most of his moves go right shooting fading from right. Bulls scouts-COME ON.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

In all actuality, I don’t remember ever playing actual rec-league ball at a JCC. I mean, I played when I was like, 10 and all, but that was a bit different.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

It’s one thing to know a players sweet spot, but another altogether to stop him from making that shot, especially with 48+ minutes of hardcore basketball in your legs. John Salmons, you are not Ron Artest.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The Celts had no business winning that game once Ray fouled out. That may be the one thing….not Miller’s misses that come’s back to haunt them. Rondo was great again…..and Pierce got hot…..but the turnovers that Rose commited were pretty much just……bad….in the 4th quarter……growing pains and all…..but the Bulls just match this depleted Celts team pretty well…..and should have beaten them last night.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

If thebulls had a better coach there’s a chance this series would have been over already.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Dark…..I don’t thing that wagon has a chance to ever cool it’s wheels.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Naah, pimp that wagon up, because it’s gonna be his main ride if the Bulls lose this series.

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

Holly is amazing. love reading your stuff.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

The Seed is so right. I am actually shocked how many no names have coaching spots but Duckvoice is still unemployed (well apart from the occasional tv work). This guy is a proven winner. For 3+ Seasons, he’ll micromanage any team deep into the playoffs, then the players might start tuning him out, but isn’t that a risk worth taking in today’s “fire him after a few months on the job” nba?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Thanks for the love guys. These playoffs have just been amazing….. and it’s still the FIRST round!

  • Rich

Everybody who got the nerve to talk about Brad Miller, please imagine yourself getting laid out from your blind side. Losing blood, then having a gauze in your mouth, and trying to hit two free throws to tie an overtime playoff game. Let’s see how you feel. I would be happy it the C’s won fair and square, but they didn’t. Rondo didn’t mean anything by it, but HE KNOCKED THE DUDE TO THE FLOOR. Didn’t swipe for the ball, he swiped at his jaw.

  • Diesel

Bulls have the ball with 10 seconds left in a tied game. Vinny calls a time out and the play he set up when coming out of that time out…an isolation for BG with a lot of dribbling and a fade away jumper. The guy can’t coach! 3 times Pierce hit the SAME SHOT and Vinny doesn’t double, put a taller defender on him, nothing. The refs were bad, but Vinny still could have coached to a win.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

On the Dan Patrick Show: Larry Bird joined the show to talk about the playoffs and his past …
Bird couldn’t believe the Bulls let Paul Pierce hit three shots in a row at the end of the game. He doesn’t understand why Chicago didn’t make him go left. Bird says Pierce likes to spin and go right, and he likes a jumper instead of taking it to the hole. Bird also said Pierce isn’t the greatest free-throw shooter, so maybe fouling was an option.

Even Bird, who couldn’t play D, knows which way PP is going. Poor Bulls, next year will be better, GET AVERY JOHNSON!!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

I gotta give props where they are due. Excluding his soccer flop in game 4, big Baby Davis is BALLING this series. With only Micki Moore and spongebob Scalabrine as backups, he’s is battling taller, more athletic Forwards on the Bulls side. Chapeau.

wait, doesn’t everyone always say that doc is a horrible coach? shouldn’t that cancel out the excuse that vinny is garbage? yeah, prolly shoulda doubled PP and let Steph take the shot (or think about it and then pass it to Rondo).

  • Harlem_World

Doesn’t take a genius to see Del Negro can’t coach. NOBODY else on the C’s was hitting in the OT. Force the ball out of his hands, keep him out of the middle of the floor. Send him left and throw an aggressive double at him to get the ball out of his hands. If Bulls lose to a Rondo or Marbury jump shot – live with it. Most likely, a shot from either of them isn’t going in. Just dumb dumb dumb coaching. Furthermore, Brad Miller should have taken the jumpshot. He was WIDE OPEN and is a FAR better shooter than he is at taking ANYTHING to the basket. The moment he put the ball on the floor to go to the hole, Chicago were in trouble.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I’m sorry, but I’m still in a state of shock so I have to repost this yet again…

Do not get avery johnson. The last thing rose needs is a coach like avery.

  • Harlem_World

As for the Rondo foul being flagrant – GTFOH with that. This is the PLAYOFFS. Last play of the game and you want to give him shots PLUS possession on a foul that was not malicious in intent, but intended to stop him getting a shot off. And the tears? GTFOH with that too! You a PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER and SEVEN FEET TALL. DUNK THE BALL.

Harlem – that play was in slow motion. I think Tyrus or Noah would have had a dunk by the time Miller took his 2nd step. Jukai – I agree Bird could play D. Seed must not appreciate men with mustaches. You don’t win that many championships without playing good D.

  • Diesel

Harlem – a flagrant foul has nothing to do with intent. He hit his face and was no where near the ball. Flip the tables…if miller was hitting rondo like that it’d be a flagrant for sure. You try hitting 2 high pressure free throws after just get slapped across the face.

  • Harlem_World

Diesel, its the last play of overtime. Do you really think any ref is ever going to call a flagrant in that situation? Come on man…

  • Diesel

I would. I’m under the belief that a foul is a foul no matter what point of the game. Same with a flagrant. I’m not saying that’s why the Bulls lost the game though. Even if it was a flagrant miller missed the shot and Bulls would still need to hit a last second shot. The Bulls lost this game because of poor coaching with a sprinkle of horrible reffing.

Diesel: SEED is a Lakers fan, and a dillusional one at that, so that’s one thing… but Bird could not only play defense, he was downright GREAT at it. I have childhood memories of Bird downright shutting dudes down, blocking their shots from behind. It’s downright insane that SEED thinks that way.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Kobe > LeBron.
    AI > Billups
    Paul = Williams
    Yao = Howard
    Durant > Oden
Rondo = Howard = Flagrant Foul.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Actually, on offense Yao > Howard.
    Defense Howard > Yao.
    Hence, Yao = Howard

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That is, if their teammates actually PASS it to Yao and/or Howard.

Juks, just to make sure you see it. This is about whether Nash as always been an atrocious defender or if it’s just his back kicking in:
”It didn’t take a Nobel Prize winner to figure out this guy’s pretty good. It was just a case of hoping that none of the big names came around.”[8] However, Davey (Santa Clara coach) told Nash that he was “the worst defensive player” he had ever seen.”
    You fail.

Remember when danny ainge said steve nash was a good defender in slam mag ?

Not at all. When did he say that?

It was in nashty’s first feature I think right after he signed with dallas.

    Birdman > Bird.

    I love Waiting for Godot.

  • Harlem_World

Diesel, the game doesn’t work that way. End of game situation, if a ref calls a flagrant on the last play of the game, you’d never hear the end of it not only from Celtics fans but everybody else too. Fair to make him go to the line and earn it, which he clearly didn’t do. He should have either taken the open 15 footer (WIDE OPEN) or dunked it. What business does a 7foot NBA player have trying to lay the ball up with the game on the line??

  • Tavoris

Z, what’s really funny is that Nash appears to be a better defender than he really is. He does an excellent job of “appearing” to do all the right things. It sucks, cuz the Suns ask him to do sooooooooo much offensively, that I can’t imagine him having any energy on the other end.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Tavoris I think Nash is “doing the right things” but he is doing them at a High School (defensive) skill level so it has no real effect thats IMO though
