Post Up: First Round Finished!

As the Celtics and Hawks prevail.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

And just like that, the first round is done. A little anticlimatic, don’t you think?

Those Bulls and the boys in green spoiled me. Game 7 was still a close one, but I think we all felt like the Celtics were going to pull it out. At least, in the pit of my stomach and depth of my soul, I did. It just felt like the experience of the guys on the Boston bench was too much for the young Bulls to overcome. I can’t be too disappointed though -and no one should be, even if you’re a Bulls fan- because we got a series for the ages.

I think it was the youthful exuberance and blind ignorance to the task in front of them that allowed this Chicago squad to be able to come back from that soul-crushing Game 3 beatdown and turn the series into a dogfight where every single Celtic saw their playoff lives flash before them.

I will forever remember this series by:

- The UConn shootout

-Ben Gordon playing h-o-r-s-e with God (thanks @russbengtson), and playing on one leg.

-Joakim bounding down the court like a gazelle, outdribbling a sprinting but gased Paul Pierce before elevating and dunking all over everything green

-Rondo playing his heart out and his feet off, (literally),

-”It wasn’t my ankle, my feet were just tired”

- Jesus Shuttlesworth giving us a glimpse of all things divine (is there really anything prettier than that jumpshot?)

- Rondo silencing every single critic who thought he was successful only because of the players around him (including some doubters here at SLAMonline).

- Derrick Rose becoming the embodiment of not allowing your emotions to get the best of you while on the floor.

- Stephon Marbury on the court in a crucial Game 7.

What a series. What fight and heart and ultimately poise from the Celtics. Scal coming in  to score eight quick points that made all of the difference in the end. Eddie House coming off of the bench to be perfect from the floor and break the heats of the Bulls. Big Baby and Perk stepping up when they were needed in the absence of KG.

I love this game.

About the Heat folding against the Hawks. I just wanted one good game from this series but then I stopped, thought about the Bulls/Celtics and thought, “screw it, I got what I wanted last night”. Congrats to ATL fans for moving on to the second round. Not sure what to say about the match up with Cleveland.

Moving on to the Western Conference…

Those Nuggets are something. Talk about a redemption story. Billups gets moved and his old team sinks while he becomes the steadying force that Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith and Kenyon Martin needed.

JR Smith proves his worth off of the bench and comes in second to Jason Terry in Sixth Man of the Year voting. Melo finally gets out of the first round and appears to have his head on straight. Nene is back and he is healthy and stronger than ever.

Chris Andersen has been through hell and back and everywhere in between and he’s bouncing up and down the floor, blocking shots and bringing smiles.

Then, look to the sidelines and you see George Karl, one of the nicest, realest coaches in the league. I can’t hate on the Nuggets. Of course the Lakers are the pick in the West but wow, the Nuggets are fun to watch. You all know I love JJ Barea and Josh Howard, but I’m pulling for the Nuggets in this one.

We’ve got Celtics/Magic and Lakers/Rockets tonight.

I’m going with the Celtics and the Lakers for victories on their homefloor. Kobe sat out practice yesterday with a sore throat, so he very well may throw down 4o on Ron Ron and show him Roy isn’t the only guard to be able to light him up. He also may keep his eyes focused on the bigger task at hand and get his teammates involved early and score 20 while getting a 20+ point victory. What do you think is going to go down in that one?

And will a reinvigored Dwight drop 25 and 25 on the C’s?

NBA Playoffs, there is truly nothing better.

I dig it Holly Mack. Good stuff as always. And that Russ Bengtson comment (as well as the Ben Collins one) are gold

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Quick turnaround for the Celtics to face a rested Dwight and the Magic. Howard is going to straight beast on Kendrick Perkins. I’m not sure if the Rockets are going to give the Lakers much trouble unless Yao comes to play. And yes, the Nugs are dangerous.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Kobe will try and score 40 points each game. Then he’ll try and add to his assists and rebounds totals after he accomplishes that. That’s what I’d like to see from Bryant this series.
Let’s see if we can get that selfish, one-minded, egotistical, self-serving Bryant to come back. Sure he had a sh!t team when the majority of that was going on, but he still did it with Bynum early last year, and mid-way through this year. I DONT think it will, but it would sure give the Rockets a hell of a shot to steal a game at Staples some time.
That would be nice. Otherwise, a 6 or 7 game series would do me just fine. Maybe not Ron Ron, but I’d be satisfied.

  • AlbertBarr

The Bulls played a good game and made it an epic series…heres to hoping next year is even better…bulls have a tendency to get worse after promising seasons.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hursty, since you are a Rockets fan, what do you think their chances are? Who do you think has to step up to make this a competitive series?

  • vtrobot

Thanks, Holly. What an amazing series. It’s odd that it happened alongside one of the more lopsided 7-game series in NBA history. I knew that Eddie would get it going if given the chance. His shooting confidence is at the opposite end of the spectrum than Steph’s. The 2nd round has some potential to be almost as exciting as the 1st. Cavs/Hawks could be amazing. I’m thinking there might be some highlight real material coming out of that one. C’s might end up being too beat up. Two west coast series should be great as well. Get it on.

  • Harlem_World

I think PP has saved a lot in the tank for round 2. Ray carried them in round 1, now it’s his turn to step up and there isn’t a player in the Magics roster who can stop him. That being said, Ray on Redick should be a joke too. Perks and Baby’s development in round 1 will also off set SOME of the Howard advantage and Rondo will outplay Skip. Though on tired legs, I’m giving that to the Celts in 6 (please no 7, or they’re going to be on gas and air by the time they play Cavs in ECF). Cavs do ATL 4-1.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

does anyone else think that andre miller is the shaun bradely of guards? (players taking turns putting him on their highlight reels)

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

and yes, MY nuggets are goin hard

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Go Hawks! My boy, Joe Johnson redeemed himself with a understated (fitting) monster game. And it was nice to Al Horford get some run and play pretty well in game 7. I’m sure they wish they had a little more rest before meeting the Lebrons, but they’ll be ready nonetheless. I feel happy for the true Hawks fans (like Coco, Myung, and Lang on here), keep supporting your home squad, appreciate what you have there.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I’m not sure if I’m a believer in the Magic, yet. There were points during the regular season when they looked 100% legit, but now…not so much. It looks like they’ll be missing Courtney Lee for atleast a portion of this series, whcih could be huge. They won’t be able to rely exclusively on D12 to carry them offensively. Hedo and Shard’s play (and shooting especially) will be crucial for the Magic’s chances.
Oh, and since nobody has talked about Bron for the last week or so, I’m guessing he comes out in total beast mode for game 1 aginst ATL. 40 with a triple dip is about what I’m expecting. Josh Smith better be ready.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Wow, I almost forgot about the Nuggets. They sleepwalked threough the first half, while Melo was saddled with foul trouble, and still blew the game open. JR is balling. Nene is beasting. Melo is waiting to explode. And Chauncey is the steady hand, guiding the squad and picking his spots to go off. Dallas has no chance in this series. And people who think Denver won’t give the Lakers trouble are kidding themselves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    Im kidding myself.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

And sorry, Harlem I don’t think Paul Pierce HAS much left in the tank, certainly not enough to have been “saving something” during that Chicago series. I think Hedo/Shard will kill him if they are matched up all series. But I think Perk can give Dwight more trouble than some are predicting. I cannot waiti to see thre RonRon v Kobe matchup as well. Kobe and the Fakeshow are huge favorites but they will have to BEAT a tough Rockets squad that won’t best itself to move on. The question is: Will the Rockets be able to score enough to stay in games with the Lakers? And will they get Yao the f@ckin’ ball?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

No surprise there, keep slurping the Kobester Myles.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

C’mon. When you support your team are you slurping Duncan, Parker or Ginobili? Or do you just believe in a championship caliber squad? This is Melo’s first trip out of the first round, that team still doesn’t play adequate defense and they’re probably the most combustible team left in the playoffs, if not the entire league. But because I dont think they can beat a contending Western Conference champ and title favorite FOUR TIMES in a seven game series, Im slurping? Solid argument.

On a completely different sidenote: I juat saw one of the Dallas Cowboys coached got paralyzed from the waist down in that tragic accident at their training facility over the weekend. He was only 33. I hate the Cowboys, but this sucks.

    great read holly.
i think the nuggets. and the lakers western conf. finals would be a great series.
Howard is going to murder the C’s tonight.

co sign Nate – LAL and Denver is the finals I’d like to see. C’s have nothing in the tank unless KG makes a surprise visit – they will get toasted but well done. Myles isn’t slurping – please. And Eboy should be allowed time to recoup. Cheers!

rockets are surprisingly more effed up than the nugs. denver/LA WCFs would be great and yes, the Lakeshow will have their hands full. There aren’t many 7 footers who Kenyon and Nene would beat up on more than Dirk, but I think Pau might be one. pierce should have his hands full with the son of the science teacher from fast times.

  • Harlem_World

Coikstar, though I’m not his biggest fan, PP is better than shard and hedo. I think shard is the most overpaid player in the L. He’s decent, but $126M?? How much better is he REALLY than John Salmons? Hedo is better, but even he isn’t great. The thing that will kill PP and Ray is fatigue, not ability. We’ll have to see how much the Bulls took out of them.

  • Harlem_World

I also don’t believe in their ability to take over games. Hedo can hit a shot, but they have yet to impress with takeover ability.

I just can’t believe how john salmons and ben gordon don’t even look to pass the ball on most possesions and how rose won’t have a defender within 7 feet of him at the three point line and won’t shoot. The bulls problem is mostly coaching with a side of immaturity. And that the only two people willing to take big shots will take those shots with 3 defenders on them.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I said “if you think the Nuggets won’t give the Lakers trouble”, Myles, not “if you don’t think that Nuggets will best the Lakers” There is a difference. Its funny that laker fans a=often assume the identity of the 24 full of fake swag and annoying overconfidence. Your repsonce was so quick and short that it sounds like you don’t take the threat of the Nuggets seriously, which is exactly what I was referring to. I know the Lakers are still favorites to advance, but you have to respect you opponent. I just hope the Lakers are as arrogant and foolhardy as your first comment came off sounding.

    My typing = FAIL

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

It was a joke. I like to joke. Jokes are dependent on timing and inflection, hence the brevity, no? Its not like I said, ‘Were gonna eat everyone alive, r@pe your wives and pillage your village’ (I plan on using that quite often). Just like Houston and Utah I expect Denver to put up a fight, theyd be chumps if they didnt. But to me, ‘trouble’ is the Lakers being in danger of losing the series. I dont see it happening. But I guess that means Im a slurper.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Ciolkstar, if the nuggets are going to give the Lakers trouble, then the Hawks are going to give the Cavs trouble. This is one seed vs. four seed, yes they could win one game, but for them to win the series the Nuggets would need God and the Hawks would need Jesus and Melo and JJ would need the Holy Ghost. COME ON!!!

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Myles referenced One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest on a SLAM thread…
    Really?
Anyway, it’s eating me up inside that the Nuggets are playing so well. I feel small, but I can’t help it.
I do think the size of the Lakers with Bynum and Gasol will be a problem for the Nuggets, but I think they look legit. I think their defense isn’t great, but it’s not horrible either. They have too many bodies for Dallas.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

It seemed appropriate. For multiple reasons.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I think Denver’s D is A LOT tougher than the Lakers’ D. I wanna see how Pau does against Nene. Everyone agress that the Lakers were too soft to win it all last season, and I don’t see how thats changed. Their bench is weaker in terms of scoring (and is probably not as good as Denver’s bench this season), but I think having Ariza in the starting lineup helps the Lakers, he could give Melo some trouble. Bynum STILL isn’t the championship factor he’s been consistently touted as. I just think its going to be a VERY close series, and if the Nuggets shoot efficiently and limit the Lakers easy buckets they’ll have a decent chance to get to the finals.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Los Angeles Lakers Defensive Rating: 104.6 (6th of 30)

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Man, my problem with the Nuggets is that even with Chauncey, they aren’t as disciplined as the Lakers. The Lakers have problems on defense, and they can fall in love with jumpers, but they are still a team with an identity. What is Denver’s identity?
The Lakers run the triangle and they run it down your throats. They also have a player who can take over any game, and the idea of JR Smith or Dahntay Jones trying to guard him is just ludicrous.
I think the Lakers system, which gets good shots for it’s bigs and littles, will be the difference. The Nuggets may have more talent, but is that talent going to consistently be put in the best position to succeed.
They beat a flawed Hornets team, and now they are beating the seventh seed. What’s all the hoopla about?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

The Lakers are clearly the best offensive team in the L. They get SO MANY easy baskets from Pau, especially against bad teams. I just think Denver has enough weapons to beat the Lakers. And if Kobe trys tro win those games by himself I fully expect him to fail.

  • Michael

Lakers beat The Rockets in 5. No matter who they play in the WCF it’ll be easy. Denver just doesn’t match up well with the Lakers at all. The Lakers are maybe the only team with the sdize to deal with them on the inside, and they can’t do a thing with Kobe. If Dallas somehow gets to the WCF finals it’ll be a massacre, they want no part of Kobe in the playoffs he’ll average 40.

I think Boston can beat Orlando. I guess i’m buying into the “heart of A Champion” BS.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

…and regardless of the defenive rating stats, The Lakers just don’t have any balls. Still. I expect Kenyon, Nene and Birdman to body the Lakers bigs. If Odom plays his best, I concede that the Lakers will be EXTREMELY tough to beat, but I wouldn’t exactly be thrilled to have my championship aspirations pinned to that guy again.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

On a totally different subject, Wikipedia has a page on the nicknames of basketball players… take a look at some of these:
    —————————————
“The Boston Celtic Mascot” – Brian Scalabrine
“Down Syndrome Duncan” – Tim Duncan ‘
“D-Whistle” – Dwyane Wade (Given to him out of spite by whiney Maverick fans from Texas. Face it you lost!)
    “Dr. No” – Joakim Noah
“Earl the Girl” – Earl Boykins
“Half Man, Half Season” – Vince Carter
“The Human Victory Cigar” – Darko Milicic (he only gets off the bench when Pistons had won)
“The Machine” – Sasha Vujačić (for his ability to suspend in the air)
“Never Nervous Pervis” – Pervis Ellison[3] ( aka “Out of Service Pervis.”)
    “The Slave” – Paul Millsap
“The Truth” “The Chink Beard” – Paul Pierce (Having witnessed Pierce play one night, Shaquille O’Neal quoted “Paul Pierce is The Truth”)
“T-Pain” – Tracy McGrady (for being constantly injured, ie. in pain) [3]
    “White Mamba” – Sasha Vujačić
“Wince Harder” – Vince Carter (reference to his low pain-tolerance)
    “WoodShaq” – Brendon Haywood
    ——————————————
I love Wikipedia. From now on, Sasha is White Mamba and Tracy McGrady is T-Pain.

  • Michael

@ciolkstar. Are you a Denver fan? Caue if you are you know damn well that Kobe kills them all the time. If he does try to win the games bu himself he’ll probably suceed. Denver is a better defensive team but they aren’t Boston or Detroit of couple of years ago.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Denver has shown that they have no one to deal with LA’s size inside with Pau, Bynum and Odom. More importantly they have absolutely no one to guard Kobe, so he can play cat and mouse with them all series, alternately scoring and dishing as the situation dictates. And I have to admit, I find it absolutely hilarious that you continually expect Kobe to abandon the team concept as though JR F*CKING SMITH isn’t a constant threat to launch a contested thirty footer.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

JR has no understanding of team concept, so he can’t really abandon it. I’ll admit that my distaste for the Lakers often clouds my judgement, and alot of what I write here is a form of wishful thinking. But Laker fans are so overconfident for a team that hasn’t done sh1t in the 5 or so years without Shaq, that I feel like I need to respond in kind: Refute every logical argument/critique with fanboy idealism. So yeah, the world where Kobe’s a good teammate and the Lakers play good D is the same one where JR can outplay Kobe on a given night and Melo can aveage 30 on solid shooting.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Ciolkstar is buggin. But when the Lakers win the chip, what can he say then?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I think Birdman could eat Pau’s lunch. I really hope Denver tries to just beat the Lakers up, because it workred last year and would probably work again. Odom and Nene could be a tossup, though I’d lean toward Nene as he makes less mistakes and is much more efficient. Kmart could guard Odom as well if the Lakers try to use him more on the perimeter. I still don’t think Phil trusts Bynum and think it’ll be interesting to see how big of a contribution he makes, he could be the difference if he plays really well.
If Kobe makes like %60 of his jumpers and Ariza hit a ton of those wide open threes I don’t think anyone outside the Cavs could beat the Lakers, but those are all big ifs…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    I’ll say “Congrats f@ggots!”

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Okay, i just gained a smidgen of respect for the lakers fans in the staples center. After Yao just bumped knees with Kobe, the place went silent. Then when Yao made his comeback after stretching in the hallway, the fans (all in yellow) close to the tunnel started cheering for him. That’s respect. gotta love that. And Yao sure is a fighter. comes right back and hits his first jumper. oh wait… OMG, Yao just spun into the lane on a desperation play and got hacked by Fisher. Dude just knocked knees and he’s spinning around?? FANTASTIC.
