The Post Up: Lakers Payback

And the Magic crumble.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

40-point win!

I know, you’re all going to tell me this is what the Lakers are supposed to do against a Yao-less Rockets squad. You’re right, of course, but it was still nice to see some of the guys get themselves back on track in this one. Seven L.A. players in double figures. My favorite things were seeing Jordan Farmar and Andrew Bynum appear to get into the groove again.

It was crazy how quickly the game turned into a b-l-o-w-o-u-t. I was watching with a few friends and every time I looked up, the lead had stretched. It was kind of wild. You know what else is kind of wild? That I was watching the game at a bar. Me, watching the Lakers in a playoff game with other people. I’m learning to be more calm during games. Also learning how to respect the fact that some people will never see the brilliance of Kobe or the heart that is Lamar Odom and that’s okay.

Crazy how the Lakers came out so focused this game. Will they be able to close this thing out in Houston?

Now, about the Magic. I’m a SVG fan, but why was Dwight Howard on the floor/getting the ball in the final seconds when they were down by three? That just didn’t make sense. And the Magic got screwed out of a possession on that shot that did not hit the rim and was out of bounds off of the Celtics. Still, they gave up key rebounds when they needed them and gave Boston the room they needed to get the W.

So, Boston and L.A. are each up, 3-2 while Cleveland waits for their ECF opponent and Denver/Dallas will try to get through tonight without any more family members getting offended and anyone else getting escorted out of the arena or ejected from the game. Absolute craziness going on in that series. I’m not a fan of any of it. You’re playing basketball, playoff basketball there is no need of this foolishness.

Cuban shouldn’t have said anything to Kenyon’s mother. Kenyon needs to broaden his vocabulary if he wants to jaw at Cuban. Lala needs to calm down so she can stay in her seat and doesn’t miss her guy dropping 41 (although it was a loss).

And Dirk? Poor Dirk needs to pick up some pointers on things to look for in his next girl. That whole mess made my head spin and also made me feel horrible for him. What a disaster. Props to him for playing well in the face of personal adversity. Can you even imagine?

Despite all of the subplots, sidestories and drama, I’m jacked for the game. Think Denver has it, or will the Mavs steal another W? I think the Nuggets will finish things off tonight.

“If I’ve hurt anybody or if I’ve done any harm to anybody, please forgive me because my intentions were just harmless,”

-Glen “Big Baby” Davis

Did you hear about the father who wrote to the NBA office demanding an apology from Glen Davis after his son lost his hat and became a part of the many replays we’ve seen of Baby running up the court after draining the game-winning buzzer-beater? To that I can only say,  wake up! Your kid is sitting courtside at an NBA playoff game and was basically, unintentionally, a part of the action. He was not harmed in any way and gets a crazy story and memory to take home with him. Had he been injured, I could perhaps understand the concern, but even then if you sit courtside, you take that risk. Ask Jason Kidd and his son TJ’s broken collarbone. Things happen. Davis meant no harm.

I still smile when I see him running back to his teammates to celebrate his big shot.

I also was happy to see Lamar Odom on the court and looking okay last night. Boston and LA winning. It feels like all is right in the NBA world again.

Okay. Prediction for tonight: Dallas or Denver? Any ejections? Any more drama?

Actually Holly, LaLa was removed by security because they were concerned for her well being, not because she was acting out in any way. They didn’t want to see her be a target for unruly fans.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Dwight Howard blasted his own coach after the game:
Magic center Dwight Howard had a lot to say about the way his team managed the game down the stretch Tuesday night. “The coach has to recognize what’s working on the floor and stick to it,” said Howard. “Even if you don’t have your starters in, the guys you put the most trust in. You gotta have trust in everybody. When you’re in the situation where guys got it going, you know everybody’s moving the ball and the energy is up, you have to stick with it. You have to stick with what works.” It’s never good when a player second-guesses a coach. Howard’s postgame press conference suggests the Magic will be facing more than just the Boston Celtics in Game 6 Thursday night. (Boston Globe)

As for the Lakers, they finally looked like they had that killer instinct. This doesn’t bode well for other teams. The Rockets seemed to give up midway thru the 2nd quarter. Horrible game by them.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

I need Dallas to put up a fight against Denver. Tire them out a bit!!

  • mj23

I told y’all. Don’t get caught up in the hype!!! Rockets had a nice little run, but their season is about to end. Lakers by 40 pts. Amazing!!!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

That’s what I’m talking about lakers. Wake up. Of course now comes the chorus of “they should win anyway” …I’ll say this about marbury we (meaning the knicks) could have used some 12 point 4th quarters this year. We probably would have been in the playoffs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Odd that all the Lakers love was stone cold quiet after game 4. And of course they should have won last night Shia, if they didn’t, they would have been a laughing stock. Stop being such a nob slobber, kid.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

It shall be quite boisterous today, E.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Good, besides, the best thing about last night was seeing Steph have a few minutes of Starbury come back to life.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I can’t believe Big Baby apologized. That disappoints me.

  • riggs

so all the laker folks come out of hiding to boast eh?

  • James aka…

I turned off the game with th 5 minutes left and the magic up 10. Im surprised they completely collapsed, but they were playing like they were trying to lose. their offence seems to be built around people jacking up shots with no regard, and they should have done whatever they could to get both davis and perkins in foul trouble. They have the talent but not the brains to be elite.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai
  • riggs

@Co: he’s a good guy of course he’s going to apologize.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Why wouldn’t Glen Davis apologize? He accidently pushed the kid. He didn’t HAVE to apologize, of course the kid is courtside, stuff like that is gonna happen… but Glen Davis is a good dude, so he’s gonna say he’s sorry. What’s the big deal?

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Dude called him an animal. Eff that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Van Gundy is such a garbage big game coach, it’s not funny. He fu*ked up the Heat’s chances in ’05 against the Pistons in the same way. He get’s too caught up in the moment, screaming and jumping around like an idiot, instead of looking 2 or 3 possessions ahead to keep his squad in tune.

  • mj23

The magic are about to join that other Florida team and go fishing!!!

Riggs is pretty annoying lol!! Co sign Jukai!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

It’s not like Big Baby knocked him down. And when it happened, if you keep watching the kid in the background, he makes no motion to his dad that he got hit and they are both just standing them dumbstruck that the Magic blew it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

If the Magic don’t win, the Cavs may sweep… again!!

  • riggs

@James: youre the LAST person to even utter the word annoying.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

So E, is it SVG’s fault for him team continually blowing big leads or the players? Or both?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

You comments are bad lol … always so hostile.

  • mj23

Game 7 in Boston is gonna be crazy!!! Let’s see how Stan Van Jeremy(Master of Panic) handles it.

  • http://lacuevacrosscountry.com Slick Nick Da Ruler

Van Gundy was hilarious to watch, because you know SHaq FU was calling him a choke artist. I feel bad for the Magic, they have assumed SVG’s choking ways. The Lakers/Rockets game was turrible to say the least.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s35kBpvxfsc&feature=related James the balla

    Both!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

TAD, at some point the coach and his strategies have to be called in to play. If the team keeps running the same two plays over and over, because that’s what plays are being called from the sideline, then that’s where the problems start. Like Dwight said, why wasn’t he being fed? Not that he’s so dominant on the post that he can change the complextion of the game from there, but draw and kicks would be much more workable then just running screen and rolls at the three point line over and over.

  • http://lacuevacrosscountry.com Slick Nick Da Ruler

Will Stan Van Gundy be hired in Sacramento? Or will he and Jeff become the NBA’s second worst broacasting presence? (Shout out to Reggie & Cheryl)

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy, read the comic I posted (from Slam Dumb) if you hate SVG

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

How come Laker fans can’t get excited when their team wins, but fans of other teams can? D Why all the hostility and hate against the Lakers all the time on here?? Oh nevermind I know why, silly me *insert sarcasm*

    **exiting**

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Whoever is the focus of the blame–players or coaches or both–the Magic just don’t have championship pedigree. There’s no leader, there’s no enforcer, there’s no player who has a take-no-prisoners persona. And the head coach is not the calming, in control sideline general. This team, as currently constructed, will never win a chip.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Nw09: Not that you will be around to see this answer, but the Lakers have a ton of fans who either A)Come on here to make excuses after losses or B) Don’t show their faces at all unless it is after a win.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Lol, the comic was hilarious. Whats even more funny is Shaq’s words coming to life.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Cheryl with the truth!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Cheryl, still feel sad that Stan’s not around with the Heat?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

    Um, no.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I think that Jameer Nelson injury was a lot bigger than people want to admit. He WAS the calming influence and leader on the team. I don’t remember the Magic blowing big leads early in the season.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m thinking of hiring a handler for myself and have him collect money from Tim Floyd.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Me neither.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Or maybe that Orlando were never serious contenders anyway?

  • AlbertBarr

Good point TAD…I was thinking the same thing last night when Hedo was running the point in the fourth…they really need Jameer back, he is quick and very strong, he would be giving the Celtics backcourt a lot of trouble and his drive and dish abilities would be helping the Magic offense a great deal. Hid defense is pretty good to.

  • AlbertBarr

This Orlando team is like the Nuggets pre-Chauncey, tons of talent, affinity for scoring, nothing from the neck up…George Karl is even the Wests crazy choke artist coach before Chauncey shows up…I’m not saying Jameer=Chauncey but Jameer’s stint on the sideline should make him an even better floor general come next season.

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

I think the Magic have all the potential and pieces in the world to become a contender for the title, as their record shows. They have a big man who can excell, and shooters that can shoot. However it’s almost like they don’t know how to take advantage of all of those objectives. Van gundy is an awsome coach but his “character” isn’t fitting for the team especially when the main guy is a young up and coming player. Young leaders need to be surrounded by coaches that show some poise, like a Doc Rivers. Jumping, yelling, and almost having attack along with slight tears isn’t the right emotion to display with a young team or a semi-young team.

  • mj23

Dwight Howard is not very fluid on offense. He seems very robotic, and until he develops some offensive skills, he won’t be able to take the Magic to the next level. A turnaround fadeaway jumper would be nice a la Ewing and Hakeem.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Hmm, maybe i was too quick to name Pat Riley the villain in that Stan Van Jeremy firing a few years ago. Sure Pat is no dummy, and saw the opportunity to get some glory in his older days, BUT can you imagine Shaq dealing with Stan day to day in ’06? He was already mildly grumbling about Stan’s style before he left the heat.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

I think it’s safe to say (i’ve been screaming it since the olympics), Dwight Howard is no Kal-El on offense. Sorry dude, you are fun, and a monster dunker etc. But go to guy, you are not. Go to Houston in the Summer, BEG Hakeem to teach you his repetoire. Hell at this rate, even Dirk, who’s often critisized for his limited low post game (yeah right, ask Carmelo how that tasted in game 4), makes more happen with his back to the hoop than Dwight.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Has there ever been another guy in the lig who averages the types of numbers Dwight does with so little talent for post moves? It’s pretty crazy.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

    Lakers fans are P*ssy

  • http://Double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Looks like I was wrong about Kobe having to take over E, all 12 laker players scored. 7 were in double figures. Damn. Kenny Smith is a moron also.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Zee, the Rockets are sort of like a CBA team right now, it really should be over already….they fuc*ed up buy letting it go six.

  • mj23

Eboy: He is able to put up those numbers based on his athletic ability and size. He’ll back down his man, and just dunk on him or throw that ugly hook of his. His offense is very predictable. If you force him out of the paint, he can be stopped.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Dwight puts up monster numbers, but as someone here stated recently, look at the rest of the Magic frontcourt. Shard And Hedo have size and are very skilled, but no physical presence. Basically, if Dwight doesn’t get the board there’s a chance no one else on the Magic will. Dwight is an elite talent but I still don’t feel like I’ve ever seen him really take over a big game on offense.
The Celtics have really impressed me with their focus and ability to execute and get stops in close games. With the talent they have (healthy) they really shouldn’t even be in the 2nd round, but guys like Big baby and Scalabrine (and now Marbury?) are stepping up and contributing in whatever minutes they get.
Nice game for the Lakers, though if they had lost or even won another close one it would’ve been a pretty poor showing.

If the rockets are a CBA team, the heat are an And 1 team? Or a victim of playoff jitters?

  • mj23

There’s something about those Florida teams…. They have a habit of choking.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

You two rocket scientists aren’t really comparing a team that was made and handed the opportunity to win a title with a team that was about as poor as your commenting skills last season to one that became a playoff team in one season. Seriously?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

I know it’s not over yet, and “anyway Leboom is gonna make em cry if they meet in the ECF” is the prevailing thought allover the world, but gosh do i enjoy the way the Celtics have been gutting wins out lately. Comebacks, buzzer beaters, villainy (Rondo, Perk), strokes of genius (Ray with his 50 last round) mixed in with head scratching (Ray in this round…wtf? Orlando has better D than the lockmedownbulls? Really?) and improbable heroes (take.your.pick), the most in the game coach this side of SVG (emotionally calmer though). I am truly enjoying the Celtics this year.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Nah…..I don’t think you are. You’re both teetering on puberty so I can forgive the dumbness. It’s all good now.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

i for one would enjoy it if the Celtics threw a monkey wrench in the works, if it came to a meeting with the Cavs. Even if it’s just to see LBJ rise to the occasion and have SOME adversity in these playoffs.

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Magic don’t have the hearts to win the tight games, you could see it in their faces. When PP fouled Rashard right near the end, Shard looked like he just wanted to go home and get it over with.
With Howard on the line a bit later, he looked like he just didnt wanna be there and they had no hope either way

  • mj23

It’s obvious Wade won’t win as many championships as Kobe as long as he plays for the Heat.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Oh man, it’s yet another round of “goad an Eboy”. Dudes, Miami’s done for the season, give it a rest.

It seems like Orlando forgot how to rebound towards the end of the game.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Eboy, my comment was in the vein of a team standing around watching one player do everything, like how the Lakers do at times. It’s good to see a team distribute and get everyone involved and have it lead to a win. I can only type so much on an iphone. And I’m a grown man dog. Kill that talk you give these young’uns.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I put this loss on StanVan, I hate when coaches take out players, when they have a lead and the game isn’t over yet. I started yelling at the TV, when StanVan started running Hedo at point, knowing all he wants to do is shoot and be the hero. I feel the Magic need a defensive minded coached who is used to running a high powered offense. Avery Johnson would be good for the Magic or the Bulls to me. Dwight and the backup center called StanVan out and event the old Shaqtus said something. It must be true.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

mj23: Wade is going to win multiple championships his career.
That being said, he wont win them with the Heat, hahahahahah

I blame Rob Van Jeremy for the Magic’s implosion. The Magic have more talent, they just dont know how to use it, i call ‘bad coaching’.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Holly, that’s the thing, the lakers DIDNT come out focused…it took them a few mins to finally wake up…that shouldnt be acceptable for this team. A healthy Rockets team or Denver would have kept running with it instead of giving up the early lead.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

and Big Baby should have never apologized. The father called him a raging animal and just made some very stupid comments and exaggerated what happened. If i was big baby, i wouldn’t apologize unless the father publicly acknowledged he overreacted.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

That dad is an example of too much access to media for the average person nowadays. Stupidest reaction ever. I mean do you know what BIG Baby would have done to the kid if he hadn’t shoved him aside in that decisive manner? If anything, he showed good awareness of his surroundings, given the circumstances. The person who reported that “raging animal” nonsense should have typed it up, shaken his head ruefully, AND THEN DELETED THAT ISH!

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

That dad probably is an elitist prick who sits courtside all the time and was happy until his team lost. Rich people at these games take sore losing to another level. He was probably pissed anyway for having to listen to SVG scream all game. The Big Baby barely pushing his son brought it all to the surface.

  • Drew

As for Denver/Dallas, we will see tonight how much difference a healthy Birdman makes in this series. The Nuggets need him to help guard Dirk. Plus, Karl needs to start doubling Dirk and Kidd in the post. Denver will get back to hitting the boards tonight and close out the series.

  • http://slamonline.com Nw09

    @TAD

So Laker fans can’t come on here and post a positive comment for their team winning like every other person does? We have a right to defend our team whether we win or lose as people in here defend their favorite player and team by saying awful things about another opposing team or player their favortie team of player is going to face or is facing, now am I right or wrong? Now me I have no problem stating how poor L.A. plays but I’m for sure going to produce a positive comment when they win as well.

I know alot people on here hate the Lakers and Kobe but don’t crucify the fans for supporting their team, well atleast the non-bias one’s like me lol. Geesh.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I’ll admit there is a LOT of jealousy on these parts about the Los Angeles Lakers. That being said, they’re a bunch of p*ssy prima donnas run by a ballhog r@pist.

What we learned from the Boston-Orlando game:

    - SVG is a terrible coach.
    - Dwight Howard is the softest superstar in the NBA.
    - Rashard Lewis is a choker.
    - Paul Pierce is a futute hall of famer.
    - Glen Davis drinks baby blood during timeouts. That nickname finally makes sense.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Nw09: Not being smart, but please re-read what I said. I have no issues at all with fans who support their teams and writing glowing remarks of their performances after a win. As has been stated before, there is a lot of Laker fans who frequent this board who really only come out after a win and comment, not after a loss. That irks me. I’m a Pistons fan and i’m here regardless a win or loss. I’m probably the most critical of my team. That said, I have much respect for you if you willingly come here after the Lakers lose and readily give criticism of their play instead of making excuses. There are a few like Holly, Myles, B.Long, Bodie, Marcel, Zee, etc. who are here regardless of a win or loss. I respect that.

  • madamerica

Seed, what the hell are you talking about? Hedo kept the Magic ahead in the 4th. He made assists on 3 consecutive plays, and he responded to Pierce’s 3-point play with a 3-point play of his own. Then Rashard began jacking up threes and turning the ball over, Alston threw an airball and Orlando couldn’t score another basket. Hedo should have run the offense all the way. He was the only guy trying to get the ball down low to Howard.

  • http://lacuevacrosscountry.com Slick Nick Da Ruler

    Nice said TADOne.

Tad, did you read the Chauncey article on the worldwide follower? I was embarassed for the Pistons organization when Joe D didnt have the decency to give an exit interview/thanks for everything man to man talk. That burns.

  • Lz – Cphfinest 3

Well said TAD. The hyperbole to the Lakers’ commentators you mention must be James the Baller, always loudmouthing after a win/ staying away after a game like last time in Houston.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Slick Nick: Yup, I read it. Great article. It did kind of upset me when I read that about Dumars and the coaches. However, in fairness, it was just Chauncey’s side of the story. Reagrdless, that whole situation, including re-signing Rip right before the trade, was handled poorly.

Tad, now that I think about it…you’re 100 percent right. On the support (or lack of) following Laker wins/Losses and the situation in the D. Joe D is a cold piece.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Again, i’m not sure Joe D is cold hearted in how he goes about things. I have to give the benefit of the doubt since i’ve heard only one side of the story. Thing is, Chauncey’s only request from Dumars while the team was being shopped around was “if you can send me back home to Denver in a trade scenario, please do it”. I have to give Dumars credit for that.

Lets see whats happen on game 6…I trust my man SCOLA!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

question….Portland seemed to prepare Houston for this matchup…if Portland doesnt take Yao out of the series, Houston doesnt learn to play without him. If Przybilla doesnt knock them around, they don’t learn to be consistently physical inside…otherwise this series would have been over in 5, maybe 4. So although I’ve criticized the lakers for not being ready since they’re suppose to be a championship team..anyone see Houston as the team who’s preparing the lakers for conf finals and possibly the finals? I think it depends on how the lakers come out in game 6. If they take it in 6 Its safe to say they learned something, if it goes 7, well, there’s always next year…..and the cavs, if they breeze to the finals without being challenged, are they likely to have a letdown?

Well I actually used to like the lakers with van exel and eddie jones. That squad was talented. And I’m a big robert horry fan since his suns days. (Not the rocket days obviously). Sorry E.

CIOLKSTAR – Yeah they started the season 0-15. Horry threw the towel in (literally…threw a towel at Danny Ainge, the coach at the time) and was traded so that he could win all those championships down the track…
    :\
