I’m Out, For Now…

A quick shot before I hit the road…

Sorry I didn’t have more time to post anything yesterday. I had so much to get done it was kind of ridiculous, and I ended the day by nailing someone down for our cover then having back-to-back meetings. Fun. Then I got home after 9:00 p.m. to discover that the dog I’d been dog-sitting for a friend had celebrated her impending departure by crapping all over the power cable to my MacBook. Which was an interesting surprise. I couldn’t drop her off at her owner’s fast enough.

Glad you guys seem to like that Suns cover. We’re trying to shake it up and make the covers a little more dynamic, and I think this one fits that description. We’ve been planning on getting to the Suns forever, as Khalid wrote, and everything finally fell into place. (To get an idea of how far ahead we work on these magazines, we started working on that cover at the All-Star Game when I first approached Nash about doing the photo shoot. Feels like years ago, right?)

And yes, I did write a feature about Ricky Rubio for this new issue. That’s the real story behind my trip to Barcelona, not, sadly, Mario Kasun. Who’s Ricky Rubio? More on that next week. But after spending a few days with him and his very cool family and seeing him play in person, I will tell you this for now: Ricky Rubio is the truth. And that might be an understatement.

It’s late Thursday night now, and I’ve got either five or six flights (depending on a few things beyond my control) to catch between tomorrow morning and Monday. Why? Well, if I told you that would ruin all the fun, wouldn’t it? What I can say is that I’m not posting anything tomorrow, but there’ll be a few things up over the weekend. Check back all weekend for the latest.

And wouldn’t you know it…it’s almost midnight…almost midnight…it’s midnight! What does that mean?

Fri-day! Yes!

    In the 110-106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points (including a three-point buzzer-beater shoot from mid court to force the first overtime), grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists and stole the ball seven times — a performance unprecedented in tournament history. Rubio also was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals……..DIRTY!

    It’ll be interesting to see how Lang and the Slam crew respond to the recent shot Bill Simmons took at Slam in his column today. I love both sites, and to a degree I can see his point, but I know how Slam defends themselves and holds grudges…

    ricky rubio? is it the spanish teen who averaged 50pts, 20 rebounds and about 12 assists durig the junior euro championship? if this is him, he had a couple of quadruple double during this competition. amazing!

    oh yeah and he is playing pro in the spanish league?. he started at the age of 14years 11months and 24 days old, making him the youngest ever to play in the ACB, which is by the way one of the best league in Europe. Yep, hi’s that good.

    Wasn’t Mario Kasun in trouble with his homeland authorities because he has tattoos that depict some kind of ethnic cleansing that offends the government? I vaguely remember something like that being kicked around when Kasun played for the Magic.

    Darko’s perceived ‘suckishness’ is only because he was drafted so high and Chad Ford spent months talking about how Darko was going to revolutionize the game. If Darko had been taken in the draft’s 20s, he’d still be an “emerging presence” and not a bust.
    Steve Francis’ sucking, now that’s another story altogether. I watched him suck in Toronto to the tune of 8 turnovers and countless bad shots. That was an international incident.

    @Lang: how did you get Ricky to do an interview since he will not be available for any media related stuff until he turns 18, which his parents and his team agreed on?
    @Mike: Milan Gurovic is the guy with tattoo related problems in Balkan area, not Kasun.
