Shaq and Kobe reunite again as co-All-Star MVPs.

by Lang Whitaker

Sunday night and we’re ready to get it crack-a-lacking. Let’s go!

• About an hour before tipoff I was walking around under the stands and walked past the press room and heard someone speaking. I walked in and found Sen. John McCain stading there talking to about 10 reporters, so I walked up and listened in. When someone asked him to choose his favorite player in the NBA, I heard his wife, Cindy, groan, as if she knew there was no way for him to answer and keep everyone happy. He answered but gave a couple of choices. Once a politician, always a politician.

• Love that TNT is preceding the All-Star Game with The Rock. Fantastic movie.

• Everyone’s  ready to go, it seems. Just caught up with Ernie Johnson who says he’s feeling great and sends his best to SLAM’s readers.

• The East just came out to shootaround to “Roc Boyz.” L’chaim! I’m guessing nobody at the NBA knows what that song’s about?

• The West came out to the more conventional “Bring ‘Em Out.”

• Melanie Collins is not a game.

• Craig Sager drank a bottle of Pepto-Bismol and vomited it all over his jacket. I think the color of his jacket should be called Pepto-Abysmal.

• Aiight, had some techincal difficulties there, mainly because I’ve been using the same laptop for the last 5 years and now it would just be faster if I used an Etch-a-Sketch instead of this thing.

• Loved the intros. Nice anthems as well.

• Early celeb watch: Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, Donald Fasion, John McCain, Spike Lee in an Abe Lincoln top hat. Seriously.

• Dwight welcomes the crowd. “Hey y’all! We gon’ have some fun!” He’s been watching too much Paula Deen.

• Here we go. I’m going with D-Wade for MVP.

• And he hits a three off the bat. Nice.

• Duncan getting shots up early. So’s KB24. 9-4 early on.

• Dwight said, Hello Tim! Wade with a crazy dunk from the wing. Bron again. 16-6 early on.

Weird stuff is happening…my computer is slower than Shaq tonight and I can’t get a wireless signal. So I’m out You guys want to keep talking it out in the comments, go for it.

I shoulda got a PC.

• I’m briefly working again. Everyone loves Bill Russell — except for me, because when I was a kid and asked for an autograph he said no and was really a jerk about it. And now he sells his autographs. Classy!

Aiight, even though my computer kinda died in the first half, I’m gonna keep on taking notes and add them later, or as my computer deems ready.

• Halftime. John Legend and Juanes. If you’re out there, play a faster song, please. Zzz…

• Uh-oh, he just went to a faster song…that nobody knows.

• Jimmy O’Donnell and Brian Benson, if you’re out there…hook a dude up.

• One advantage of being here live: I can’t hear Reggie Miller.

• So Kobe (13) and Pierce (14) are leading scorers at the half. David West has fewest minutes played with 6:22.

• BTW, someone told me that Luis Scola is rolling completely posse-less out here and has been seen a few places (hotel bar, Hooters) sitting alone and eating or having a drink.

• Redeem Team tribute…to “Bittersweet Symphony.” Kinda cool to see them all here together…well, most of them. Now Coach K is on the scoreboard with a  video tribute to Redeem Team. He also urged them to buy his latest book and to use the products he endorses. LeBron’s cutting up during Jerry Colangelo’s speech. I wish Colangelo would snap, “HEY! PAY ATTENTION, DAMMIT!”

• I’m testing out sitting in Ben’s seat instead of mine — perhaps I was in a dead zone?

• Ah, maybe so!

• We have better seats for the NBA All-Star Game than we do for a regular season Knicks game.

• Donald Faison bricked a couple of threes at the end of the half.

• Second half opens with “Crazy Train.” The East has a ways to go here.

• AI begins the second half by shooting a layup over the backboard.

• The West is actually running plays. Iso for Yao Ming and he hits over KG.

• LeBron! With the shot he almost dunks, gets fouled and then does a lefty windmill layup!

• I was talking with Mike Grange from the Globe and Mail last night and he said he thinks LeBron still has a ton of upside — thought he could be averaging 34 or 35 easy. Just saying.

•Dwight just threw a shot from Duncan into the third row. Any block that impressive shouldn’t be considered goaltending.

• It’s sorta fitting that Cindy McCain is sitting next to Eva Longoria, isn’t it?

• 86-74 West, with 7:55 to go in the third.

• After Duncan threw that pass two feet over Yao’s head he shrugged and tried to give him five — and they missed that, too.

• Kobe. 3. LeBron. 2.

• Yao and Dwight go down in a tangle. We hear the people in Orlando gasp from here. They’re both fine.

• They keep showing a great fake infomercial in the arena with NBA players singing love songs — Shaq singing “Carribbean Queen,” Amare singing “That’s Amore,” etc. Just looked for it on YouTube but no luck.

• The Kiss Cam segment included Jay and Beyonce. Beyonce gave the camera the stink eye and Jay held up the dynasty sign. Really. Mediatakeout will have a whole post about that tomorrow.

• Shaq is back and scores. Mo Williams for three.

• Kobe makes a layup and screams “Oh sh*t,” which gets picked up on the mics and broadcast throughout the arena.

• Shaq iso’s on Dwight Howard and hits CP for a long two.

• Shaq pulls the give-and-go with Chris Paul which the East kinda lets happen. Shaq’s like the oldest guy in the Teacher-Student game who the crowd is cheering for.

• Now that I’ve got internet access I’m afraid to move my computer at all. The problem is that I’ve got it in my lap and it’s searing a burn into my left thigh. I’m live-blogging this game even if my pants catch on fire!

• Corbin Bleu is here again. Can we just call him Corbin Bleh?

• The West players came out of the timeout and I swear I saw Chauncey texting someone.

• Joe Johnson is back! I just want him to score at least 1 point.

• The West is dominating, 109-89. 59 seconds to go in the third.

• I love Shaq, but he manages to disrupt he flow of his own team’s offense even in an All-Star game.

• After three, it’s 110-91, West. Disappointing that T-Mac hasn’t had a good game thus fa…whoops!

• Yes, whoever asked, Roy and Chauncey are both wearing number 7.

• Bennie the Bull won’t stop messing with Ludacris on the sideline. He might be the only mascot gangsta enough to not be afraid of Luda.

• 116-99, West, with 9:14 to go. Other than Shaq being Shaqciting, it’s been a rather uneventful game. Still, Shaq and JabbaWockeeeezzzzzzzz was pretty dope. And then the game started.

• Chris Tucker plays the game on the scoreboard during the TO. What is a “saquaro?” On tape, Shaq says it is where he originated, the land of the cactus. CP3 says it’s “something sharp, like a sword.” DWade says a fish. Dwight says it’s a hat. Amare says it’s similar to a dust storm. Chris Tucker chooses cactus, and he’s right. Yao Ming loves this from the huddle.

• Great moments in NBA All-Star timeouts: “Say Hello to the Reverend Jesse Jackson…and Akon!”

• Back to live action. LeBron is back and going to take a shot at closing this gap. Three-point play, good. West leads 120-104.

• Writers are bailing out left and right. Bron misses a big dunk, then Dwight misses a three, then Wade gets a follow dunk.

• You can tell Phil Jackson is coaching the West because even the East’s points are way more exciting, the West is just more effective and not as compelling.

• 124-106, West. 5:55 to go.

• The game is so boring now that I’m googling Melanie Collins. Literally, not figuratively. Found the link of the day, though.

• Anyone else have a feeling this is what a postseason Phil/Mike Brown match-up could be like?

• Dwight rips Kobe then clears it out to go one-on-one…and turns it over.

• 136-114, 2:09 to go.

• Chris Paul catches an oop! Can we turn out the lights yet?

• OK, can Joe Johnson get just 2 points? He wants the ball…and CP3 steals it and misses the dunk.

• Amare/é/’e with the windmill to punctuate the win. Then Brandon Roy with the oop. They should’ve started doing this about 15 minutes ago.

• Bron on the clear-out for the huge flush.

• And that’s it. Final score is West 146, East 119. Kobe led the way with 27, so from a basketball standpoint he probably deserves the MVP. But from an entertainment standpoint, the MVP should totally go to Shaq. My solution? Co-MVPs, Shaq and Kobe.

• And the MVP goes to…Shaq and Kobe! I actually called that in the car three hours ago in the car on the way to the game. What!

• Shaq says he’s just happy to be here. Kobe says it was “fun, it was fun” playing with Shaq again. Will Ernie ask Kobe how Shaq’s ass taste?

• Apparently not.

So that’s it from Phoenix. Hope you guys had fun tonight and thanks for being with us. We’ll have some wrap-up material in the next few days…

We out!

BET and myself had it at like 1100 during the Kobe post where he was named number one before the season!!

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

@ MP3: because he has street cred

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

Click on my name and read the story, if it does not make your day then it will surely give you goosebumps. If you read truehoop and read the Fernando Martin Story don’t worry about it. Its the same thing

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

    WOw … cool story.

  • illydiva

I know it’s late, and I was remiss in not live blogging on Saturday; but aside from the Dunk Contest being AWFUL anymore, I am sick to death of Nate Robinson. (Disclaimer: I will admit to not getting over his robbery of Iggy in ’07 but this has nothing to do with that.) Is Nate going to win every contest just because he’s 5’10? His dunks are either unoriginal and/or fake. He DID NOT dunk over Dwight Howard. He clearly used his hand to hoist himself over Howard and what’s impressive about that? Rudy was robbed. If Rudy was booed for taking too long, Nate should’ve been booed for using a trampoline in the previous dunk. Rudy’s dunks were the most creative and unique. I’m only 5’5 but I will forever hate short people because of Nate Robinson.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

A few things about the Dunk Contest- Rudy did not get robbed – Nate Robinson Jumping off of Wilson Chandler is not like a trampoline at all, where do you see his body pushing Nate Robinson back into the air at all? If anything his back took height out of Robinsons dunk (but it did not deserve a 49 or whatever), and JR Smith is who got robbed, if you watch the contest him and Nate Rob did the SAME dunk to start and Robinson got 3 more points. THen on the second dunk JR got a better score then robinson meaning he should have actually beat him. And being there it awfully felt like the Finals of that contest were predetermined…..the finals were entertaining but the NBA’s intentions in the matter were transparant

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Yeah … the off the back just doesn’t make any sense. I use to do that when I was in grade 9 first getting into basketball. I am only 5″9′, but sitll throw it down. But that right there … it was sad. Disrespectful to all short folk like myself!!

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

    Cosign NBK. They were predetermined!!

  • http://myspace.com/arodakaroman and1ballermj2350

Hey Rashard Lewis eats micky D’s, i was behind him in line!

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

@James the balla swallowa: The difference is thet TD’s chips all came with him as the best player on his team, same with KG, and almsot every other great winner in the history of the game. Kobe is best as a second fiddle, and knowing that drives him crazy. You too, apparently.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Also, Rudy’s dunk was very nice but it took WAY TOO LONG. Go back and watch the Vince, or even Jason Richardson, everything is clean and powerful on the first try. I’m not saying that anyone this year got close to Vince or JRich, but taking 8 or 9 tries, there’s absolutely NO WAY anyone is going to be ale to fully appreciate it. Its just too anticlimactic.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

KG best on his team .. why did PP get finals MVP. And Ray Allen hold them together?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

KG was the reason they won it. Its not all about scoring points. Kobe fans forget that pretty easily. Not surprised its ahrd for a little 5’9″ dude to appreciate the subtle value of a defensive big man.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

And I hate the judging the THROW wtf its not a passing contest. Like why did JR Smith have to have his teammate through from the crowd? They need to do away with the teammate pass thing its garbage. LeBron – Josh Smith – Rodney Carney – Russel Westbrook 2010 dunk contest (in my dreams)

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

what does “and Ray Allen hold them together?” Mean?

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

lol so then MJ didn’t win they’re 6 championships? It was actually Pippen and Kerr?

  • http://myspace.com/arodakaroman and1ballermj2350

Hey Rashard Lewis eats micky D’s, i was behind him in line on saturday!

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

James – MVP of the FINALS goes to the best offensive player. Defense got them there and KG is their defense

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Well if it wasn’t for Ray Allen getting hot they wouldn’t have beaten the Lakers. He was on fire. REason being he was left open all the time!!

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

cosign NBK on the teammate routine being beyond played out. Pau’s silly little behind the back pass basically ruined it for Rudy. If he could’ve pulled that off on the 1st or 2nd try he would’ve been in the finals. Also, I fear we’ve entered the era of prop dominated dunk contests…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I’ll say it again James, Jordan was the BEST player on those Bulls teams. Yes, it takes a strong supporting cast for ALL championships. Scottie was the greatest second fiddle of all time, with Kobe as a close second.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

KG is the most important player on the Celtics James – regardless of how much other guys help KG is their engine. Ray Allen is like the emergency brake – if the emergency brake was equal to a 3 pointer – Paul Pierce would be the gas. But not of that matters without the engine

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

No matter how hard he tries Kobe won’t be able to shoot his way to a ring without a true defensive big man to cover his ass. Jordan was able to do that, over and over again. Which is part of the reason it was so special.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Paul Pierce was absolutely unconcious during the Finals, but I don’t think the Celtics get there without KG. And that seems pretty obvious…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    This again?

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

I think this is the first time I have ever agreed with you 100% ciolk

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Blame James the Balla, E. He tried to extend my take on Kobe’s inabaility to be a champ w/o Shaq as an indictment on the C’s and Dynasty Bulls. Doesn’t make sense to me either.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

And why did they ask the fans to vote for MVP of the game? There is not humanly possible way Kobe & Shaq got the same amount of votes? WHy did they want us to text in? I didn’t see the game on TV so if they said I wouldn’t know

  • Justin

    ciolkstar is heated. lol

  • Justin

nbk the media voted for Shaq and the fan vote went to Kobe. It was similar to the electoral college. They both ended up getting 6 points, so they got co-MVPs.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

This is way off topic but i just read that Phelps got poppoed for drunk driving when he was 19, apologized, and no one ever brought it up again. How is that less of a big deal than hitting a bong ata party when you’re 23 or whatever? In the story it said he would NOT be charger… what the hell could they have charged him with?! Not possesion, not PI because he was at a private home, I think its pretty scary that people even thought he should or even COULD be charged with a crime…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Here’s something simple that most of the basketball-knowing world is aware of, and only Lakers fans don’t know or can’t swallow their fanship fast enough to accept it: the majority of people that belive Kobe is Micahel’s equal are Lakers fans. That being said….it’s a muted argument. The press (including SLAM)comes up with headlines and comparisons on a monthly or nightly basis to garner ratings, revenue, what have you and use some oversaturated numbers to promote their falsehoods. Let me ask yo uguys a question….when we saw the SLAM cover revealed and it was touting the headline “Can Anyone Guard Kobe” (parphrasing)was anyone expecting some cool, stats driven writeup that showed where he stands in that discussion? Possibly comparing Kobe to the games great, past and present, and having an “imaginary” analysis of how guys like Michael Cooper, Scottie Pippen and yes….even Michael Jordan could match up today with Mambo. Yeah, me too. Instead…we got a typical state of the Lakers…how’s Kobe doing piece. It was completley misleading, but panders to a certain audience….and Lakers fans make up the largest majority of ball fans and Kobe is the current centerpiece of that chapter of Lakers history. Ben O/Ryan gave us a definitive explanation as to why the mags covers are picked a certain way…so it should be obvious….but instead, false arguments are made…time and time again…because the fact of the matter is….the talent level of the current NBA is at an all time high, individually. So many guys are SO good…it’s hard to choose who’s best…sometimes from night to night. As a guy who followed Jordan’s career from college to close…as a teenager until I was an adult….I can tell you…..once Michael got his first title (and the whispers were there before that)there was NEVER, EVER discussion of who was the best player in the game….like the Kobe/Lebron nonsense that happens daily around here. Sure guys like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley were gifted a couple of MVP’s and had great years when they won and had solid teams behind them, but everyone knew…and still knows if you saw the complete body of Michael’s work. Was he a perfect player? No. Did he fail in situations? Yes. Was he portrayed in a light that covered his personality faults? Yes. But he made a legend out of being at his best in the biggest moments (something that Kobe and his team (s) have failed at miserably twice) and until someone else comes along and does just that…..there isn’t room for discussion….everyone else is outside in the waiting room..waiting for an invite into that room he’s at.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

thats retarted- so comvp was predetermined?

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

Eboy – You should post that everywhere Lakers fans are…..I 100% Cosign what you just said.

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

Its a 4 person room though – Michael, Magic, Bird, Russel – Russel at the head of the table but everyone is starring for Michael

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    COSIGN EBOY

  • Caleb

CP3 was the only guy with a double double, and was close to a triple double… but no MVP?

  • Caleb

The slam dunk contest and the all-star MVP thing… both had a feel of being predetermined nonsense.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

nice one eboy. might i add the “no hands allowed” perimeter defensive rules of today. can anyone imagine what jordan would have done if you couldnt touch him on the perimeter? he would have avgd at least 40 every year.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

In the news: Fred Taylor cut by the Jaguars.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@Caleb: They always have that feeling. And they probably are. Rudy’s dunks? They were great. Last place? No. But, you know, don’t care about the judging. Just watching it is fun, I don’t trouble myself with all of the rest.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Y’all see that massive article in the NY Times magazine with Shane Battier as the centerpiece?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Yeah, I did, Allenp. Great stuff, too. They touch on a lot of good stuff there.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

^Yeah, I was at my folks house yesterday and my mom said I should read it. I haven’t yet but I think its mostly about Darryl Morey (The rockets GM), PER, and other newfangled metrics used to analyze sports.

I’m sure there are a lot of Laker fans that know the difference between their favorite player & the best player. Not all Laker fans think that Kobe is the best so please stop with the hate. Oh & i’m not sure how some guys say it, i think it goes something like this– nbk please stop riding eboys jock.

@NBK that was a gud story
and its tru, Jr did get robbed. this whole giving 50′s because hes 5’3 is getting ridiculous.

Eboy, thanks for all the help today. Everyone: me/Lang/Ryne were traveling and getting reacclimated today. Not sure where Mutoni was but he had given us a heads up…and our office was closed. Hence the slowness. The ad in that corner of the site is run by Google…I’ll look into if they can take it down or be more demanding of their advertisers, but I just wanted to clarify that SLAM sells (or gives away, or trades, whatever the case may be) the banner ad on top of homepage and the box ad below SLAMTV. The ad box in the lower lefthand corner in the box that says “ads by Google” is, well, an ad by Google.
