Links: SLAM Podcast Show 1

Featuring special guests David Stern and Stephon Marbury. Really.

by Lang Whitaker

Yo. So…we’re literally hours away from All-Star 2009, and things here at the SLAM Dome are kinda insane right now. We’re closing our next issue, we’ve each got about 10,000 things to write and sterncastedit and proofread, and by this time tomorrow Ben, Ryne and I will be jetting our way toward Phoenix for All-Star Weekend. As always, the SLAM crew will have All-Star on lock, updating live from Phoenix as much as we can. We’ll start coming live from Phoenix on Friday morning, assuming we don’t run into the travel issues we had last year. (If we get on the plane and Sully Sullenberger is our pilot, I’m getting off and walking to Phoenix.)

In the meantime, we’ve got something cool to help you kill an hour or so. We’ve been talking about doing a podcast forever, but we never really got around to making it happen. Until now. I’m not a regular podcast listener, other than the Ricky Gervais podcasts, but I recognize the value of podcasts — they’re relatively easy to make, and they’re a cool way to get insight into particular topics on demand, when you have free time. So between cranking out SLAMs, trying to write on SLAMonline and twittering away, I’m going to try and do one of these podcasts each week. (Don’t quote me on that, though).

I wanted to set the bar high for show one, and I figured we had to come out of the box strong. So for our first show, our guests are…NBA Commissioner David Stern and exiled Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury. I’m still working on getting this on the iTunes Store, but for now you can download the file to your computer by right-clicking the link below and choosing “Save Link As…” on a Mac, or choosing whatever PC’s ask you to call it.

Or, if you want to let it ride in the background, you can listen on our convenient flash player below.

Huge thanks to both Commissioner Stern and Stephon for taking the time to be interviewed.

Hope all you guys enjoy it, and be sure to keep it locked to SLAMonline all weekend for live coverage from Phoenix. Later…

    Intro Music is BOMB

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

good polar opposites to have on the initial cast.

  • tenorca

Ha! Got Handles is right. I’m excited for this guys—thanks for killing an hour of my weak ace work day.

I hope this is an every week project. Excellent work Lang.
    Great subjects for issue 1.

  • Gumdrop

You guys have got to get Olowakandi for your next broadcast.

  • Blinguo

PC’s call it save “LEEG PASS?” no but, the same thing, save as. And I will be disappointed if a “LEEG Pass” joke, from nearly 2 seasons ago doesn’t come up with these 2 marquee names involved. Bonus: What happened with the Hawks color commentary files? Internet voodoo bad juju? (although I didn’t click back on that week old story yet)

  • Blinguo

Because of course we all need more Lang in the world wide web of weirdoes. You’re now on that twitter tip and were on youtube ASG to translate that “Mr. Iverson, how do you like Jose Juan Calderon?” and you turned paparottzo with “Langee!” via Melo “my man” word to the Roots. Also you were in that other video thing about Ricky Rubio in Spanish TV documentary or something. (and your Facebook analysis is on point, don’t get on that crazy train, unless sponsor forced)

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

ASG will be weird without Sam.
    Not gay.

@Michael NZ: I was explaining to Ryne today why it’s a bad idea to wear flip-flops when traveling, in case you have to run through an airport, as Sam taught us last year.

  • http://wherethenbareallyhappens.blobspot.com Collin

    stern and marbury? now there’s a party…

  • Tom

Awesome interviews Lang, especially the Stern one. I wonder if Stern would talk trash to players if he got to play in the ASG?

  • http://www.showmeyourwits.com showmeyourwits

Great, great podcast. This made me respect Stern a little more than I did previously. Just a little more though.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

Fair to say Sam taught us a lot.
Listening to the podcast now… Stern thinks the ASG roster is 10 deep.

  • dlinkwit

    damn, marbury is a b1tch.

  • Blinguo

Thanks for the link to the Hawks play-by-play sidekick’n. Now my only other request would be a “Tractor Traylor” Slam Tag to get all big and bold, one day… baby. (I’ve made at least 2 Tractor Traylor comments so its at least on the list, albeit the last of 1,000′s) Or figure out why I can’t post with a website url anymore, but that’s the techie side – not SLAM dome editorial/linkstigating work. Great job Lang double.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

Naw its kinda hard to disagree with Steph on all this. They signed him to that contract now they want to take some back? Then they don’t want him, but when injuries hit they want him to play. It needs to be one or the other in that situation. He’s either on the team or he isn’t. Also I do recall he was prepared to come off the bench and he did come into camp in great shape.
Altough there is a strong case that he could help himself and his image if he just took a little less and and took a buyout.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

Which segment was brought to us by The Basketball Jones?

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Quick question … anybody find it freakin’ hilarious that Mike Brown is complaining aboutt he foul on LeBron? lol

  • Jackie Moon

Sweet interviews … you really have a good rapport with Stern and Marbury, you can tell they don’t view you (for good reason) as the “evil media” who will manipulate their words.

  • Jackie Moon

Oh man, I just thought of the most brilliant move, Lang … you should have conferenced in Steph when you had Stern on the line … “Can you hang on for just a sec, Mr. Commissioner?”-Click- “OK, Steph you there?” “Sup Lang” “Mr. Stern, I’ve got Stephon Marbury here with us now …” and let the conversation flow … and never get an interview with the Sternbot again.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

Q Rich has a big-a** mouth. Ask the Knicks. Ask the Celtics. Ask the Suns.

  • toney blare

man, i never thought Sam could do better than those Bill Walton impressions.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

Only flaw was that, Sam, as Marbury, did not say the words ‘different direction’ enough. He was quite obviously drunk. Or high. Or both. Probably both.

  • Heals

Great addition, can’t wait to see how you guys utilize podcasts from here on out…

  • http://twitter.com/SeanEMitchell Homie

You know how you picture someone, get an idea of how they sound? And then you actually hear their voice and it completely throws you for a loop? That’s how I feel with hearing you Lang. Somehow I figured more south’n, being from ATL and all. Maybe that’s the ignorant Canadian in me…but good job!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Tzvi T: I still say for the All-Star weekend they have to implement boxing, or even a streetfight between Q-Rich and Paul Pierce.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

Teddy: right? They need to throw Starburst in there as well.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

With Sirius in trouble, it may be time to start calling Lang the new King of All Media.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

@Ben: I’m working on getting Beetlejuice and Elephant Boy for the next show.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    That would clinch it.

  • http://www.lineofthenight.com/ Shannon Booher

Nice Lang. Love that SLAM is in the podcast arena, now.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I like how the commish’ relates ‘POWER LUNCH’ to actual food…ehehhee..
1 point for the common people.

  • datniceguy

    About freaking time!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

This definitely needs to be a weekly occurence. Marbury sounded like he was in a daycare, as Lang pointed out. Great intro and exit music. You cannot go wrong with Onyx.

this is great. Good stuff Lang

  • riggs

hey yall should make a deal with zune and ipod to make it downloadable :(

  • adams

Michael NZ, I thought the same thing at first about “the other nine guys”, but I’m pretty sure he meant the other players on the court.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

@adams: Yeah you’re probably right. Damn it.

  • BostonBaller

    Gangsta, simply Gansta….

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Personally, I always wear sandals (no socks) atthe airport. I always get hit with that “Random Search” and I hate having to take off shoes and socks in that security line.

  • David Thomas

Great guests, i wish i could say the same about the audio quality. Once the growing pains are out of the way I will come back and listen. The idea of a SLAM podcast is a beautiful thing.

  • chintao

Stern said he would call-out Kobe to go one-on-one. Awesome.

  • sab

I think steph’s great, and totally understand his principles and everything, and agree with him to a point….. then you realise this is the real world, and maybe, just maybe, he should grow up, compromise, move on. Surely, by sitting around not playing this year, just to get his full amount of money, he is ensuring that he gets a poor salary on his next contract – whereas if he got bought out, he could show what he can offer, and then score a decent veteran contract in free agency. Basically, shooting himself in the foot in the long run, by being a big baby.

  • sab

i’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate – 38mins is NOT an hour, haha

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

as your last question you should have yelled : WHY DID YOU SUSPEND AMARE IN THE PLAYOFFS YOU PRICK?!!!
