SLAMonline Mock Draft: Patty Mills, No. 19

That’s not a point guard…THAT’S a point guard!

by Lang Whitaker

There are two ways to go when you are a team confronting the NBA Draft: 1) Draft for immediate need; 2) Draft for the future.

Thus far, the Atlanta Hawks and their new GM Rick Sund haven’t been particularly good at executing either of these plans.

The Hawks (under, and I mean literally under) Billy Knight not only famously passed on Chris Paul and Deron Williams to take Marvin Williams, but they subsequently passed on Brandon Roy to select Sheldon Williams, who isn’t even the best basketball player in his marriage. And in 2007, the Hawks took Acie Law over Rodney Stuckey and Aaron Brooks. We didn’t land on Billy Knight, Billy Knight landed on us!

As for Rick Sund, before coming to Atlanta last summer, here were his last three first round picks in Seattle: Mo Sene, Johan Petro and Robert Swift. In fact, Sund drafted 16 players as the GM of the Sonics and never selected an All-Star.

Ahem.

So you can excuse us Hawks fans if we’re not exactly confident that our team will be able to competently handle the Draft process.

HOWEVA!, going back to the two ways of drafting, the Hawks are kind of in a weird place this summer. So much of what the Hawks should do or could do in this Draft is dependent on what else they’re planning to do this off-season. What do the Hawks need? Considering the Hawks were the fourth-best team in the Eastern Conference last season, that list is surprisingly long. Right now they have three starters under contract (Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Josh Smith). Marvin Williams is a restricted free agent, and Mike Bibby is a free free agent. Zaza Pachulia is a free agent, as is the only other big on the bench who got any playing time, Solomon Jones.

Will the Hawks be able to re-sign Mike Bibby? The more I think about it, the less sure I am, and not only about being able to sign him but even wanting to sign him. I think the Hawks are going to offer Bibby either the Mid-Level Exception or even a little less, and Bibby should be able to make that somewhere else, or at least make the same amount for a longer contract than Atlanta will offer. Having Mike Bibby on your team is something of a balancing act, as he’s still a very good perimeter shooter, yet calling him a defensive liability for us this season is an understatement. If the Hawks are planning on losing Bibby, would they be able to get someone to replace him in this Draft? Probably, but they’d have to trade up. They have the assets to do that — they could throw in Acie Law (who I think is dunzo in Atlanta), or Josh Childress’s rights, or maybe even a future first-rounder.

But I’m getting off track here. Who will the Hawks select at 19?

I have said many times that the player I’d like the Hawks to draft is Florida State combo guard Toney Douglas. I still don’t understand why this guy is only being projected as a second rounder. He can play the 1 or the 2, he can definitely defend (he was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year), he was runner-up as ACC Player of the Year, he’s originally from Georgia, and his brother plays on the Atlanta Falcons. If you want an endorsement from a college coach, how about Coach K, who said this about Douglas:

“He’s a great player. He’s my favorite non-Duke player in the country. I love that guy. I talk about him a lot to our guys. They’re probably mad at me. He’s as good as there is in college. He’s as good as there in college. He’s a kid I’d love to coach, no question about it.”

To me, Douglas could be a cheaper version of Flip Murray — he could come off the bench and back-up the 1 and the 2. Plus, unlike Acie Law, he doesn’t seem to get injured all the time.

All of that said, I don’t think the Hawks should draft Douglas at 19. Everyone I’ve talked to projects him going later in the first round, if in the first round at all. So if Toney Douglas is your guy, either you trade down to get him or you pick for someone else and then trade for Douglas.

So who will the Hawks select at 19?

Chad Ford has us taking Jeff Teague from Wake Forest, but from what I understand, that probably will not happen.

So who will the Hawks select at 19?

One interested observer that I spoke to was lobbying me to draft Wayne Ellington, the 6-5 swingman from UNC. I don’t like him at 19, though, not only because he’s projected much lower and they could trade down and still get him, but also because 6-5 guys are about the last thing the Hawks need right now.

So who will the Hawks select at 19?

Well, throwing all the variables out the window and assuming the core of last season’s Hawks team remains intact, and assuming the Hawks actually choose 19th, I think there’s two positions the Hawks are in need of: A big with toughness and a small, fast point guard.

As far as bigs go, I’ve heard the Hawks like Tyler Hansbrough at 19, and I think 19 might not be a bad place to take him. (Besides, you can always trade him to the BETcats.) I don’t think he’ll be as bad as Sheldon Williams, but I also don’t think he’ll surprise anyone — what you see is what you get.

So who will the Hawks select at 19?pattymills

Let’s do this: With the 19th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks select…

Patty Mills from St. Mary’s. He’s small — 6-1, maybe 175, kind of reminds me of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf in that regard — but he’s fast and quick. He can drive and score (he put 20 on the Dream team in the Olympics), he can create open shots for Joe and Marvin and Mo Evans, and he’s also a tough defender, which will earn him playing time from Mike Woodson. I think he’d be a great fit for the Hawks and could eventually supplant Mike Bibby. His jumper still needs work, but remember, Tony Parker didn’t have a jump shot until about two years ago, either.

Also important is that Mills seems like a good kid. The Hawks have managed to build a respectable team without assembling a crew of knuckleheads, and I think Mills would represent this franchise, my franchise, well. And for a team like the Hawks who still don’t have the sizable fanbase that some of the League’s other big teams have, would it be such a bad thing to draft one of the most popular Australian players and get that huge fan base handed to you on a silver platter?

Here’s a good Patty Mills video feature to close out on…

that’s awesome! we’re rooting for Patty Mills back in Aus.

Rick Sund’s and the hawks draft record is atrocious.

  • http://slamonline.com PolowdaJon

I like this pick only if he backs up bibby for a year or two. you cant throw him out there right away. he needs a steady veteran to guide him so he doesnt develope any bad habits. JKidd?

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 Weezy F. Leezy

yea definately a sleeper pick…kid looks solid

  • mj23

I was impressed with his play last year against the Dream team. He’s extremely quick and plays bigger than 6’1. I see him as a Tony Parker type of player. I would start him over Bibby.

  • Michael

do we have to call him Patty?

  • MattM

I like Patty Mills. The only problem is that all of the reports I’ve seen lately say he hasn’t been doing well in workouts and is sliding toward the second round so you could probably pick him up later on or trade down.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Anytime I’ve written anything even close to critical of Mills on the other sites I write for I get attacked by a gang of Aussies, so I better sit this one out!

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

    Not sure about this one…
What about drafting James Johnson to possibly replace Marvin Williams and then going after a PG like Ramon Sessions in free agency…
I like Mills but he’s undersized and seems like a score first type of guard who’s not a great shooter. I think Teague is easily the better pick here.

I watched a video on YouTube recently, which put together footage of all the terrible draft picks the Jets had made at the NFL Draft (passing on Marino…wow). The looks of anguish on the Jets fans’ faces and howls of disgust at the announcements were truly something to behold. Any chance of someone doing the same with the Hawks?

  • T.J.

I like Patty Mills but I was also thinking maybe Terrance Williams. We could use his versatility to give JJ a much needed rest from time to time.

  • hsglisn

Mills is projected as a 2nd rounder. Lang are you sure you are not Billy Knight.

  • http://Nicekicks.com MeloMan22

FOrget Patty, They need Jordan Montgomery!!! (youtube himif u dont knoo)
and the line about Sheldon was cruel…and very funny

  • Khalid Salaam

    jeff teague?…

  • Quail

T.J., if Terrance Williams isn’t picked before 19, there’s somethin wrong. and I still say i would have picked Darren Collison over Mills. Collison is gonna be a very good pro player.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

@ciolkstar: That’s exactly what we need — a guard who can score and is small and fast AND can defend.

  • Czar Ruke

Would have been cool if you GMs traded picks in this mock draft if you wanted to trade down or up. I REALLY hope the Bucks don’t resign Ramon Sessions so he can go to a quality squad.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

OK, Lang. I see that angle. Plus Joe can handle some of the point duties. I mean, I really liked the Patty Mills everyone saw in the Olympics. He’s definitely a tough player and a solid defender, 19 might be a little high but I like Mills and will be rooting for him (and the Hawks!) next season.
Can you explain why the Hawks aren’t interested in Teague?

  • Nick

I like this pick ALOT. This kid is 6 ft 1, blindingly quick, I mean super explosive quick, can shoot the three, has a great mid range game and is only 20 years old.
We must remember that we need to develop guys like Mills and teach him the system and watch him blossom. For me he is the standout with the most upside of any PG in this draft. Go and watch you tube of the USA v Aussies warm up game and get excited.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Lang, I hope you wrote this while eating a Bloomin’ Onion.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    I miss Charles Oakley..

  • JoeMaMa

Lang, with all due respect, you’re on crack. The high quality New York kind, making your ramblings extra high.
Atlanta will go for a 6’8″ swing man who handles the rock a little, rebounds a little, shoots a little. It’s the Hawks way.
Patty Mills will not go first round. No way. Noooooo wayyyyyyyy

  • knock knock

PATTY F***CKING MILLS!?!? are you kiddin.

Yeah he’s 6’1, too bad he plays like a damn shooting guard HENCE why he should be in the second round.

This guy is a ballhog and if he spent as much time finding open guys insteada his own shot, he’d be a much better player.
    But i doubt thats happening.

I love it when coach K goes all Rainman and starts saying the same thing over and over in that nasally voice of his: “He’s as good as I’ve seen in college…definitely…as good as I’ve seen in college…gotta buy boxer shorts at K-Mart…definitely gotta buy boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati…”.

  • tizzle

    Patt Mlls>CP3

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

Loved Mills in the Olympics, too, when he blazed passed even CP3, but I wonder if a more heady point guard like Darren Collison, who is also lightning fast, might be a better pick here. He’s not as good a scorer, but he may be the better defender and playmaker. Either way, the Hawks are reaching if they go for a point guard here. That’s how they ended up with Salim Stoudamire and Acie Law IV. James Johnson is still on the board. You sure you don’t want another 6-8 athlete?

  • ronak

    yer mills!!
finally a sub 7ft dude from aus that people can look up to.

  • Ariose (From Sekou’s Blog)

I couldn’t agree more Lang. But We need to find a way to nab Ellington also…and Get danny green in the second Round. Injuries to the SG/SF positions will never be a problem again. Also this takes pressure off Joe with other playmakers around. Also, if he leakes in 2010, it won’t be too devestating. We also have to sign Gerald Green(only costs 700K these days so calm down lol) to sure up the end of the bench. Then re-sign flip. Trade Speedy, and trade the Chills Rights, Andersen Rights, and Ankyol Rights. Trade Morris too, and sign Solo/Zaza/Sheed(or Brandon Bass). Signing a Guy Like anthony Parker who is an unrestricted Free Agent is alo an option.

The Jury is still out on Bibby. If he’s around then the Younun’s are certain to get extended pine-time. Sund may need to get rid of woodys crutch, which will force him to play our younger guards.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Hells yeah!
I’ll go read the piece and comments now, but I’m stoked.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

I’ve met Mills before, and from the way he carries himself as a person you’d be really impressed. If the Draft was based purely upon manners and good-nature, Mills would go top 5.
Nathan Jawai is also his cousin btw.
I really want him to succeed, that would be amazing not just for Australian hoops, but for the Indiginous community here, who’ve had a few hard knocks lately.
    Thanks Lang.
And for the doubters, I guess his play will just have to quiet you down, because nothing anyone says here will.

  • StingrayCharles

Great pick – he is getting slammed for his shoot first mentality – he played for freakin St Mary’s…who was he going to pass to?

The guy owned the redeem team and will be the steal of the draft – probably picked up by the Cavs or Lakers (who will have first hand evidence from LJ and KB how NBA ready he really is)

Also, check out the Coach K comments after the Olympics about Mills – just as glowing as the ones about Douglas

  • Declan

Man its good to see Aussie guys in the NBA. I’m hoping he stays around for a while.

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Patty Mills will be a steal assuming he goes out of the top 10, not meaning to demean/bring Rubio into this but imagine they matched up against opposing teams, who wins? Mills everytime because he’ll coast by him time after time just like al he young PGs today breeze by Nash, no insults intented. It’s even more surprising how hard he’s being slept on given how weak this draft. Looking forward to seeing him play next year.

  • stokesey

I have to say 19 is the highest iv’e seen projected for Mills but as an aussie im hyped for him, Atlanta could use his speed especially if Josh Smith is wanting his points purely on fastbreak points again and not develop a jumper (jokes Lang ;) )

  • Ben

19 does seem high for Mills based on what’s going around on him atm. I do think his passing ability has been dramatically underrated, and with the right development could be a nightmare in the P&R to match his open-court game, which is unstoppable. He has copped a lot of criticism over his shot and %s all year, so I’m not surprised he went off in Treviso like he did just to show his textbook jumpshot and midrange game. But I think he’s a win-first guard, and if that means pass-first then he’ll do that, and if it means taking the shot, he’s not afraid to do that either. To have a PG with such a complete midrange game at this early stage is surely a luxury.

  • AUS BALLER

Yer im from Australia and i reckon Dallas should take him at 22 cos he would be a perfect guy to learn from kidds game and eventually take over his starting point guard role.

  • Steve

Too high, I see him going somewhere between 26 and 30.
