Links: Win Signed KG Stuff!

Plus, how can Orlando improve?

by Lang Whitaker

Fri-day! OK, it’s actually Thursday, but I’m traveling tomorrow and out of the office, so this is my last post for the week here. And we’ve got something very cool to give away…

• I went to a charity benefit thing last night and got to see an advance screening of Inglourious Basterds, which was really, really, really good. Check it out this weekend.

(And FWIW, Omar promises we’re going to get his blockbuster summer movie review tomorrow. Gangsta!)

• Yesterday I was thinking ahead to the SLAM NBA Preview, and I tweeted my initial Top 5 teams to get some reaction. I went with, in order, the Lakers, the Cavs, the Magic, Denver and Boston.

A lot of people thought Denver should be replaced with San Antonio, and maybe they should be. I just thought Denver became such a tenacious defensive team late last season, like they all finally bought into defense winning games, and I suspect that will carry over into this season. I know they lost Dahntay Jones and Linas Kleiza, who were important for them last year, but I don’t think those guys were irreplaceable. And that Kenyon/Nene/Birdman rotation in the post is for real.

The other question I got a lot of was how I could drop Orlando behind Cleveland, considering Orlando picked up Vince Carter, Brandon Bass and Jason Williams, which will seriously upgrade their bench. As I noted, yes, Orlando added better players. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they became a better team. I think that’s still up in the air. My man Kelly Dwyer said, “Name a team that added better players that didn’t improve? Don’t say 2000-01 Blazers, because they didn’t add better players.”

It’s a good point, but I have seen it happen, multiple times, even with my own Atlanta Hawks. When they added JR Rider? Didn’t get better. Moses Malone and Reggie Theus? Nope. In ’03-04, the Hawks added Stephen Jackson, who ended up leading the team in scoring, but they lost seven more games than the year before.

Yes, Orlando’s roster is unquestionably better than it was a year ago. But has Dwight Howard learned to shoot? Will Vince be able to fill in for Turkoglu? My other thought about Orlando is that it’s going to be really hard for them to improve. They won 59 games last year and went to the Finals. The only way they improve on that is by winning at least 60 games in an arguably better Conference, or by winning a championship. That’s it. And that, to me, seems like a pretty slim margin for improvement.

• I don’t know much about him, but it seems Nets CEO Brett Yormark could sell water to a well. (Or a whale, for you olski wolski LInkstigators.)

Not only are the Nets retaining all their sponsors from last season, but they also have 10 new sponsors? Imagine if the Nets were good!

• Here’s a funny video clip from the Howard Stern Show that Jimmy Traina ran today on Hot Clicks…

• And the guys from FreeDarko found this mesmerizing clip of 8 mm NBA footage from the ‘70s.

Some great Wilt Chamberlain footage about a third of the way in. It’s well worth watching on full screen mode.

kg1• And finally, we have a contest. You may recall a few years ago, in Kicks 9, Kevin Garnett outed himself as a soccer fan. I’d heard that on a recent trip to Asia, KG had brought along his Xbox 360 and played FIFA the entire time. “I’m into Zidane with France, I’m a big Raul fan,” KG said. “Deco! Those are my guys.”

At the time, KG was more of a fan of FIFA than actual soccer (he was stumped when I asked him about Fernando Torres), but since then he’s apparently become a real futbol fan, and one of his favorite clubs is Chelsea FC. (I am trying really hard to not make a joke right here about how being a Chelsea fan reflects on KG’s taste. But I digress.)

To honor KG’s love for Chelski, adidas is dropping the adidas TS Commander LT x KG x CFC pack. It comes with a Chelsea version of the adidas TS Commander, a Chelsea jersey with Garnett 5 on the back (in the official EPL font, which is kinda fresh) and a Chelsea scarf. It will be mad limited and will only be available in Boston at Bodega.

That is, unless you’re a SLAMonline reader. I’ve got a Chelsea/Garnett jersey as well as one of the shoes autographed by KG sitting here on my desk.

Do you want ‘em? You can have ‘em. Seriously. Here’s how: Drop a comment down below and tell us why you deserve this KG swag.

That’s it. You’ve got until noon on Monday, when I’ll close the comments and pick a winner.

Have at it…

I’ve played in a local Park & Rec league in San Francisco for the past 4 years. Due to the recent cut-backs, the Park & Rec has had to cut many of its after school programs for kids. Because the Park & Rec feels like family to me and my teammates, we’ve pledged to raise $1,000 to help keep some of the programs running. We know it’s not a lot- but it’s something. We’ve almost reached our target, but with what KG’s Chelsea package is worth, I’m positive we could double our goal and really help the kids who need these programs.
    Thank you for the consideration!

  • supremearthur

i am a big kg fan ive been following him ever since he came in to the league as a skinny kid from illinois out of high school. i like how he plays with passion and with heart. and i know about chelsea fc and their history(they won the fa cup last year) theyre my favorite team because drogba and anelka both can get it done. and not to mention i am a big basketball and soccer fan, and i will wear this shit with pride.

  • ti-sizz

much love for kg, the most intense and crazy (in a hyper and berserker battle-rage way) warrior on the court at all time! he’s got so much heart and intensity, that even when he isn’t playing.. he STILL yells at the weak ones, spraying them with curses and spit. haha, i just love that crazy side of him, that so many people are hating on. he’s a real monster, and his game backs up his bark. that said, i’m far from a soccer fan, but you know what, i would treasure anything with kg’s name, signature, insignia, whatever on it. his name can make a turd on a stick look good in the louvre! so lemme keep that jersey (even though it’s not a bball jersey), perma-seal it, and tell my great-grand kids how sick of a baller kevin garnett was.

  • ti-sizz

    joking about the perma-seal lol

  • Ken

Well here we go, I believe I should win the set because I’m a good ol Irish boy from Mass who whenever basketball is mentioned, all I can think about is the Celts, and as far as I’m concerned there are no other teams, and KG is definitely one of the best. My favorite sport however is football (soccer) and I’m a Chelsea die-hard and have been since day one (of me coming in contact with European football). I don’t understand why people are posting comments talking about Torres or other things that have nothing to do with Chelsea. This set is for CHELSEA fans and should seriously go to no less.
I grew up with the Celts, my whole family likes the Celts, only basketball games I’ve ever watched are the Celts. And like the Celts, Chelsea was there to introduce me to football. It was world cup time in 10th grade when I really got into it and I had grown fond of Michael Ballack (captain of Germany) and after all that was done I realized he played for Chelsea. So I looked into it. Tho not the best club at the time they were on the rise and I decided they needed my support. And I’ve been bleeding blue ever since. I watch every game no matter what (even if it means cutting a few classes here and there around Champions League time and staying in the dorm to watch), I was at the World Football Challenge, I painted my car to have Chelsea all over it just because it was already blue, I organized a supporters group at my college, I piss checks away at the newest kits and scarves from overseas. There isn’t much I won’t do for this team.
Now that we have these competitions come over, we have jerseys being sold in stores here, we have some games on TV now, we have celebs and our athletes publicly endorsing these teams, and now we have this… all these things are finally bringing two huge parts of my life together into one. Once I thought these things were so different, and the news that they are slowly merging makes me just as happy as when I saw this limited package picture for the first time. And I do realize that the “political” factors of KG playing for an Irish founded and representative team and openly supporting Chelsea, which is linked to past political issues of being loyalist and the troubles with Ireland and England (if you ask me I thought he would have liked Celtic FC :D ). But then it hit me. We as Americans don’t see all this. We see good players and a good team. Just like we see the Celts and we see great players and a great team. KG does the same. Chelsea caught his eye just like it caught mine and he has respect for the teams players and abilities and that is all that SHOULD matter in sports.
So, I believe I should win because it would mean so much to me as a Celts and Chelsea fan from Mass to own such a significant symbol of my two personalities coming together; the Irish Boston fan and the football loving Chelsea fan.

Even if I am not picked this should seriously go to a die-hard fan of Chelsea AND supporter of the Celts & Boston! Anything else would just be wrong…

  • Quentin Jensen

I deserve this because im a die hard KG fan ever since he played in highschool. I’ve always wanted to buy an autographed shoe or something but im poor. The only thing I have is like a Wheaties Box so please choose me.

  • Jonny

I deserve to win the KG stuff because I’ve been a Celtic fan for as long as I can remember, even when the rest of my family were Laker fans. I’ve stuck with them through the hard times and the best of times. I’ve gotten my wife (from Germany) to become a huge Celtic fan as well as her Dad who lives in Germany. We are also all soccer fans which my wife and Father-in-Law got me into. Since the economy went south, it’s been real tough for everyone. It would be nice to have a little piece of something good.

If you don’t choose me, please choose someone who does deserve it. Thank you and God Bless

  • Kevin Conchinha

I’m a die hard Celtics and KG fan and I would love to win this so I can wear it opening game. I would be in my balcony seats, but I would probably get on the jumbotron that day. I’d then probably get weird and curious looks from the fans and laughed at by some of the Celtics. It would all be worth it however because KG is the man and he’d invite me down to courtside to meet him… Banner #18 here we come!!!

  • Matt Gregory

If you give me this shirt, I’ll wear it every single day for the next 5 years.

  • Ashley Hoitink

I deserve this because I’m a chick, from Canada, and a diehard Garnett fan. It’s bad enough to get criticized for liking an American team (I just don’t like the Raps, alright?); but when guys don’t think you know your stuff about ball? I love shoving it back in their face.

Anyway, I’m in University right now and just blew all my money on tuition and books… I couldn’t afford anything autographed unless I sold my ’96 Neon (even then….that’s hoping). I’ve been compared to KG on the court countless times…so doesn’t it just seem to fit?

  • Rohit

Winning this prize pack would bring me more joy than anything Chelsea has accomplished/done in the post Mourinho era. It’s been frustrating watching the Mighty Blues for the past 2.5 years, wishing that each transfer window would bring one player with the intensity and passion that Kevin Garnett has for the game. At least with this combo, I could have something tangible that I could look to whenever Chelsea find a way to disappoint this season, as they’ve managed to do in recent memory.

  • http://www.twahc.blogspot.com twahc

Well, if KG plays for Chelsea, KG’s unselfishness can sure help Drogba win Chelsea a title.

  • http://www.twahc.blogspot.com twahc

If KG plays for Chelsea, his unselfishness can help Drogba bring back a title to Chelsea fans.

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

Lang, just out of curiosity, what size are the jersey/shoes?

  • shawn simpson

I feel that I should win the KG Chelsea gear because I can use it to motivate kids. I am a school counselor, coach, and huge Celtics fan. Above my office door I have the famous KG quote, “Anything is Possible!” This is now my daily motto and message to kids. They can do anything they want, anything they put their mind to. KG is the perfect connection for them. Intensity and determination in whatever they believe. If I win I will proudly display the goods in my office as proof that anything is indeed possible, and this is why I am taking a shot. Thanks for reading!

  • Chris Ujma

I think it’s funny when people say ‘I followed him from the beginning’
um….you mean when the NBA, whose whole idea is to ram superstars and triumph-over-adversity/human interest stories down your throat, made you aware of him you ‘rooted for him’.
    Okay…
If you watch the NBA draft, and subsequently watch the NBA and its highlights, then you’ve been ‘down with a guy’ from the start.
What next? ‘I have followed Lebron since High School….and I’ve ALWAYS read Slam’ hmmmm, maybe the 2 things are connected….

  • Arvydas Sabonis

KG would be a Chelsea fan. I know Will Farrel likes them too. But, why would they? I’m a Liverpool fan so i hate Chelsea as much as i hate Man United. I’m a die hard Barca cule and La Liga fan though. I used to love that La Liga column that used to be on here. Bring it back!

  • AlbertBarr

I wish I liked KG or Soccer…cause that kit is fresh. Unfortunately, the spot I have in my heart for hatred is reserved for KG. And soccer just isn’t a big interest for me. Yet…I would still rock it if you sent it my way. Humboldt county is a long way from Boston… otherwise I might cop a pair of the shoes anyways.

  • http://tudobola.blogspot.com/ Edu

    Me!
    Who else?
Not only I’m a linkstigator from day one (I still prefer the jurassic early days layout), I’m also:

    - a big KG fan (I always dreams about him in my Bulls);

    - a big Chelsea fan in England;

    - the biggest soccer fan of all people here (that’s you included, Lang, sorry), cause I’m from Rio, Brazil, and my heart belongs to the club with the biggest fan base in the world, Flamengo!, that was bigger than life in the 80′s, with a genious like Zico (you think Kaká and Ronaldinho are good? Ask then about Zico…) and several other extra-class players. Youngsters, go now to You Tube and type Zico and Flamengo, you’ll get a glimpse…

Here we live soccer. And I also live b-ball, cause I’ve played and still love the game that once was bigger here, when Oscar and Marcel played. That’s why I deserve it, Lang. My opinion, of course.

  • Shtro

I would love to give it to my son who loves Garza! I am, personally a Liverpool fan dating back to Aussie Johnson, but my kid can’t get enough of Da Kid!

  • roybot

i need some new shoes for school so i deserve them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Sully32

What the hell, I’ll take it I need something to annoy my neighbor who hates KG and Chelsea. We argue about everything, music, politics, sport, you name it we disagree. When it comes to NBA and world football two of our biggest beefs involve the following 1) KG is only a second banana 2) Chelsea ruined the EPL. Roman Abramovich turned the EPL into a fantasy league with no team spirit. I argue vehemently against both points. If I could walk out with a Garnett Chelsea shirt on to get my morning paper and he saw me, the beef would be squashed for ever.

  • Sebastian

I think I should win it because i am Kevin Garnett and maybe this will pump up my spirits to get better the next season and if i dont win this who knows what will happen to the celtics next season

  • gb

i may not deserve this. i haven’t worked for it but i would very much appreciate it. kg is cold, i have respected him ever since the espn the magazine commercial with starbury…”tastefull”

  • gb

also i really don’t want kg to ever say this to me…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltpqPd3t5V0

  • mike

I don’t think I should win because I want KG to use the the jersey to sign with a European team like other nba players are doing like your boy Josh and Brandon Jennings and the few others. Exempt I’m not talking playing hoops, but soccer. Wait, that won’t happen so as a person married to basketball and a person who is has a growing passion for soccer(somebody has to defend US soccer from my hispanic coworkers harsh comments)Ishould get it. Plus, post Jordan da big ticket has been my favorite player. I played soccer growing up and basketball was always on tv so I could get to much of a feel for it.

  • K-Nasty

Lang, I deserve this jersey because I am a fellow Bulldog, and if you hook me up, I’ll get you tickets to a home football game of your choice. That way, you can relive some great moments between the hedges, and we can talk basketball over a postgame meal at the Varsity. You know you want to.

  • Jonathan appell

i deserve them because i was born in 94 and i have every kg card since 99 and kg is my favorite player also my mom developed cancer two years back and because of the cost of her surgeries she can hardly ever buy me new school shoes and clothes

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

I like to think I deserve this KG swag for several reasons. One, I was born in Minnesota, raised in Boston, and have love for both places which surprisingly have a few things in common – super stars in Randy Moss, David Ortiz, and of course Kevin Garnett. Is Adrian Peterson next? I’ve always followed Garnett and basketball for both organizations and the sport is my biggest passion. Without hoops I would probably be just another tall, lanky kid only good for cleaning ceilings. Two, I enjoy collecting sports gear especially of Boston nature, but I’m missing a Garnett piece sadly. Three, I started playing soccer as a kid and it ranks right up there with basketball. I ran and played as hard as I could, much like Garnett, until I broke my leg on the field. But I didn’t let that stop me, because like basketball, it was a passion. I have jerseys of a few nations and appreciate worldwide play. And lastly, friends poke fun and take notice of how random and colorful my wardrobe collection is, and this bright blue Chelsea jersey would be a perfect addition.

  • Will Imbo

I deserve this gear as I happen to be English, but love basketball more than football (or ‘soccer’), and for this so called ‘crime’ I am routinely victimized in my home nation. Winning this gear would help me gain some respect back, whilst still showing love to the real beautiful game of basketball

  • hillbomber

I know for a fact that you’re a ManU supporter so I want to save you the trouble by taking that kit off your hands.

  • CJK

I deserve this because I live in Minnesota and I played soccer for 10 years when I was younger. Although not a huge Chelsea fan, I still root for them because of Petr Cech and Deco!!! As for basketball, I have played ever since I was only 4 years old (the same time I started playing soccer). I rooted for the Timberwolves only because of Garnett (they are now an afterthought). I felt Garnett’s pain when he was here in Minny and was overjoyed when he won with the Celtics. He has always been a favorite players even when 2,000 miles away and injured. Although I will never get to see him play in person, I will always consider him one of my favorite athletes and a role model. That is why I deserve to win this swag.

  • Jesse Lambert

I deserve this dream package because it is a perfect combination of all my likes and passions. Garnett has always been one of my favorite players due to his unique skill set and demeanor and this feeling only increased when he joined the only team I can consider myself a diehard for.
Additionally, I studied abroad in London, living in the “Royal Borough of Chelsea and Kensington.” I have always been a big soccer fan, growing up playing the game, but I had never chose a team in the premier league to follow. My geographic location combined with finding something in common with Garnett made choosing Chelsea as my team easy.
I can say I have a Garnett jersey, and a Chelsea jersey, but I can also say, without thinking twice, that I would trade them both for the combination of the two that you are offering.

  • James Irvine

This would make a mad gift for a mate who supports them

  • Daniel Segura

i think I deserve it because this is very special to me and that is my favorite team please pickme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(leteraly)

  • SimSimma

this is off the hook!!! it will help me promote my fav player in the league when moving to the uk next year and support my team chelsea fc, it’s the best of both (sport)worlds!!! would love to wear that stuff!!!

  • http://yahoo.com Angel Moran

I think i deserve to win is because i been a KG fan all of my 15 years of my life. I seen him play when he was with the T- wolves and still watch him play for the celtics even though im a Laker fan. Also i play both sports.I grew up playing soccer then saw basketball and started to play it to. Even though im not a chelsea fan i like watching the teams in Liga BBVA ill still were it with pride since im a KG fan. It will also mean alot to me if i win since i never seen KG play since i live in Los angeles and i never seen him in person or never had his autograph. It will mean alot to me if i win its like having the best of both worlds soccer and basketball.

i want to believe that a man who’s read every issue of slam for the last 13 years will be recognized…

i want to believe that a man halfway around the globe from Boston, in Beijing, can win a SLAM contest…

i want to believe that a man who’s favourite basketball and football players are KG (ok, i’ll be honest, TIED for favourite, along with my man Grant Hill) and Deco of Chelsea, respectively, can get ONE jersey which will properly display his love of these two sports…

i want to believe that the man wearing this jersey will proudly represent as every person in China will wonder where he got this ultimate jersey mash-up, to which he will reply, “The magazine of all magazines, SLAM..”

i want to believe that “anything is possible”…

..the ball’s in your court Lang, make me a believer…

    cheers,

Seems Lang found the ideal way to gather new followers/commenters on slamonline … could your online ed please come up with statistics how many people in this comments section are first time commenters ? this type of “prize-winning-online-tourism” is making me sick …. and by the way, I would never EVER want to win this because I am german and A) english teams payed by russion billionaires suck and B) germanies worst player is playing with Chelsea and he is the exact counterpart to KG`s enthusiasm: Ballack is lazy, uninspired and never will be a true leader …. and the only time he shows emotions is when he fouls opponents in meaningless situations … so keep the stuff to yourself or give it to one of this newcomers …. and to make it crystal clear: THE BALL NEVER DID CROSS THE LINE IN 1966, GERMANY WAS ROBBED OF THE WORLD CUP AND EVERYBODY KNOWS !!!!!!

  • LeoneL

I deserve this because it’s my birthday today and you won’t ship that to the Philippines so no worries naming me as the winner. LOL.. J/K.. Good luck guys^^^!
