Top 50: Ray Allen, no. 50

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

It’s that time of year again, when we ramp up for the NBA season by painstakingly revealing our rankings of the Top 50 Players in the NBA. We’ve done it each summer for a few years now. The criteria is simple: The players are ranked based on what our esteemed panel expects them to contribute on the court this upcoming season.

To be totally fair, I’m not really sure who our esteemed panel is comprised of. I do know that Ryne sent out an email to a huge list of SLAM and SLAMonline contributors. If they got their rankings back in time, their opinions were factored into our list. In fact, I wrote a Top 50 and sent it in, and I didn’t even have Ray Allen on my list. And yet here I am announcing to the world that Ray Allen finished as number 50 on SLAMonline’s list of the NBA’s Top 50 players.

It’s not that surprising Ray Allen cracked the 50. He was Ray Allenon my original list of names that I compiled, but I had to drop him to make room for Pape Sy. (That’s a joke.) Actually, he was the last person I cut from my list. Ray finished 36th last year on our list, and our voters seem to be expecting Ray’s skills to continue to wither with age. After all, last year his points per game dropped for the fourth consecutive season down to 16.3, the lowest since his rookie year. Sure, that’s partly a function of his age — he’s totaled almost 38,000 minutes over 15 seasons and is entering his 15th season. But it’s also a sign of his willingness to step back and allow his teammates to shine — his 12.2 FGA per game was his lowest number in that category also since his rookie season.

Despite his age, Allen’s still remarkably durable, missing only 12 games over the last three seasons. Most importantly, Allen’s specialty is shooting, and shooting touch doesn’t necessarily fade with age. He might be a little slower fighting through picks or making defensive rotations, but give him space to launch and he’s probably going to knock it down. Don’t forget, just three months ago the man put 27 points on the Lakers in the first half of Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

I’ve been a basketball fan my entire life. I may never have been a huge Ray Allen fan, but I have always appreciated that he always plays the game so freaking elegantly. He consistently makes the tough stuff look simple, easy even, as though he were some kind of humanoid programmed by Dr. Naismith to play perfectly fundamentally sound hoops. Probably the most interesting thing Ray Allen ever did was play a character in a movie. Or that time he got his face painted like a tiger. But that shouldn’t make us less grateful for Ray being graceful.

Ray Allen has won a gold medal, an NBA title, been an All-Star (nine times) and a three-point contest champ. He once played the lead, but these days he’s content to be just a player in the band — a really good band, granted — with a realistic shot at winning another NBA title before his freshly inked two-year, $20 million contract expires. And according to us, Ray Allen will be the 50th best player in the NBA this season.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be counting down toward that number one spot, so check back in with us and see where your favorite players landed.

And of course, if for some crazy reason you feel like commenting on our rankings, we have this system down below the posts where you can make your voice heard.

just read Myles’09-’10 post about Lebron. Well written. Prescient is quite a reach, however. There were those (Bron fans/Kobe haters) who predicted the takeover and those (Kobe fans/Bron haters) who predicted a(nother) chokejob by LeBron. Congrats on belonging to that second group!

    yessssss Jesus

So out of a 30 team league there is (at least) 4 Celtics on this list? Guess the Raps and the Cavs pull on the short end here huh?

  • Ghost

    So it begins.

  • The Lord of Nsam (formerly known as Fresh Prince)

Whoah Slam contributors have some funny names. Maybe u shld consider me 4 next year, my name is OMGBA.
And Ray is 2 low (despite his play in the finals last 5 games).

“Anna” better make this list or else……i wonder if he makes the “top-50 players in the Chinese league…?”…..who would have thought that while Steeve Nash (older than both cartoons) is still an all-star , both overhyped jokes would be out of the league and fighting for a place in the “top-50 of Chinese league”….well, I HAD!!!

  • rob stewart

    #49 Rashard Lewis

by the way: RAY ,as always, underated here. It is understandable (not many tattos and stupid behavior). He will always be one of the greatest 2 guards ever (unlike your feavorite Anna)

    @hoodsnake, I think you’re on to something.

  • JTaylor21

@Hisham, Kobe has had way more choke jobs than bron so don’t go there. Also what has anyone done to take that #1 spot from him, kobe and Kd didn’t distinguish themselves as better players during the regular season or playoffs. Kobe was good not great during the second season and KD was MUD. Bron wasn’t exactly great during his playoff run but he wasn’t BAD like people like to claim, he did put up 27/9/7/50FG%. Also Ray Allen is no. 50 just because his name, dude was straight up garbage during the finals except for GM2 and was the BIGGEST reason the celts lost. I’ve never seen a supposedly great shooter miss so many open shots and it goes to show people that think he’s better than Reggie are DUMB.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Ray Allen wasn’t on my Top 50 list either. In fact, I forgot he was still in the league. OK, not really…well, kind of.

let the madness begin…(grabs bag of popcorn and a Corona)

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

so, this list is about production. of course rayray should be ranked higher than #50, but production wise this sounds about right

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

ranked 11/11 for sg’s on this list? wonder who the other 10 are (in no particular order):
    - kobe
    - wade
    - joe johnson
    - roy
    - eric gordon
    - monta
    - mayo
    - stephen jackson
    - vince?
    - ginobli?
also: crawford? marcus thornton? kevin martin?

  • monkeyball

In terms of the regular season, Ray Allen wasn’t one of the top 50 players last year and won’t be this year either. Allen is a great role player during the season. In the playoffs he’s more valuable because he has the ability to have a few really great performances. So, is SLAM’s list taking account of that? The answer is obviously yes. So the idea that the list is all about projected “production” is a little bogus.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

    monkeyball,
just my take, but going off past slam top 50′s, it seems like production is the main focus for these lists.
not just any kind of production, but production that translates to wins and overall team performance. then you also gotta consider the type of role the player has on his team. is he a key piece? is he the alpha dog?
ray doesn’t produce like he used to. while he still produces for a team that wins a lot, he’s more of a role player (during the season) as you pointed out. all of this brings him to about #50.
i’m curious to see where amare is ranked. he’ll most likely put up monster numbers as the focal point of the knick offense, but will he produce numbers in a meaningful way that translates to wins?

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Milk carton: Russ, Ryan, Myles, Jake and Khalid. Honorable mention: Sam.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Been waitin for this. And everyone, Ray Allen is in a good spot. His defense and inability to score on his own would have kept him off of my list. (Tom Thibideau has really put a “mask” on ray allen, confusing people into thinking he is a solid defender)

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

that might be right, nbk. Two-a-day for the next couple weeks. Be ready!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Ray Allen game is all about shooting and that is it. Ray is getting older cannot play defense, can’t score one on one, but still has a streaky shot, that when he is on he is on. The problem is that he was off more that on in the NBA Finals, if Ray Allen is on, Celtics win. Ray Allen plays well in the Boston system, but he should not be on this list with his age, inability to score and the numbers he will put this year. BOOK IT!!!

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

DavidR; Joe Johnson in front of B-Roy?! now thats a big fat joke! Roy is FAR and AWAY the third best SG in the L!!!!!behind kob and flash

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Er, DavidR did state ‘in no particular order’.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

@ JTaylor: couldn’t agree more with you, simply restating the arguments that the two sides bring to the table. I personally have no bias towards any of the two (i’m an iverson guy, which I know is rather sad right now).

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Great to see that he cracked the list. It’s impossible to hate on Ray’s professional attitude and respect for the game.

  • http://kb24.com jbn74sb

Top 50? Still? Not a chance in f-cking hell. Although he played good D on Kobe in the Finals (with the help of the entire Celtics defensive gameplan, as well as the refs), he shot about 12% from the 3 point line when you eliminate the one game where he hit like 37 3′s.

  • xplor

    Top 8 Celtics
    1Bill Russell
    2Paul Pierce
    3Rajon Rondo
    4Ray Allen
    5Larry Bird
    6Kevin Garnett
    7Rober Parish
    8Bob Cousy

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

^I really, really hope that list wasn’t in any kind of order.^

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

    trailblazing,
that list was in no particular order (you skipped that part). and i’d have to disagree with you about roy > joe for the simple fact that joe is more durable than roy. if healthy, roy > joe no problem. but when is he fully healthy?

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

@Moose: xplor has John Havlicek at #137.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

sorry, didnt check…hes more durable thats for sure, hope roy can acomplish that, he had an unbealiveble 08 09 season, last year was a step slow almost all year due to being banged up.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

though even banged up and in the slowest team in the L, that 20 5 5 with nice %s is guarensheed baby!

  • JTaylor21

Xplor must be exploring with different drugs at the same time when he wrote that SH*T.

  • Big E

Kevin Durant isn’t better than Chris Paul. He should NOT be #1. He is overhyped right now because of his great FIBA tournament and people love scoring titles. I expect him to have a good season though but right now I look at Durant as an athletic volume scorer. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but #1? Nahh.

  • Big E

CP3 should be top 5. Dude is healthy and is tweaking to get on that court.

  • JTaylor21

Big E speaks the truth. KD is a product of people having short memories and gets over hyped to the extent that people really believe that dude’s in Kobe/Wade/Bron level. Also guys like CP/DWill/Melo are still better players and will continue to show that this season. Until durant plays better defense, takes better shots, becomes a better passer, and comes up BIG in crunch time, he will be nothing but a high volume scorer.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

JTaylor21, I’m taking Durant over Melo all day. However, I agree on the short memories front – also doesn’t help that CP3 was out for a while. People forget.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Michael’s been speaking logic all day.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I hope Rondo breaks top 25.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

to me rondo´s defenetely top 20

  • bashmo

wow..ray allen at 50?? i expected higher to be honest..maybe round the early 40′s or even late thirty’s

i think that number 1 will be Kobe, and 2 will be lebron, 3 dwyane wade…the durant, melo or dirk for 4th im assuming.

I hope CP3 gets up high here as well…his injury set him back, but he’s still the best PG in the game!

  • sample

    i want bogut!

  • Slick Ric

It is a damn shame people already hating on D Rose. Anyway Im intrigued to see just how good boston will be this season epsecially with the addition of Shaq.

  • ab40

wow no adam morrison this year? Slam what happened. I think kobe is no 2 or 3 this year. he’s on the decline.. want proof? check the finals. Pau was mvp not kobe.

  • don

    i arenas is out of this list, i’m quitting slamonline.com …. for 2 days…. :)

  • James

LeBron will be no 1, Durant will be 2 and KB will be 3rd.

I’m going to have a tough time understanding how there are 49 players better than Ray Allen.

  • Mitya

Ray is forever Jesus and that’s that.
