Links: Changes…

Fri-Day! Yes!

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

(I realized yesterday that this post was going to be going up on the site on April 1, better known as April Fool’s Day. But this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke. So i almost held it until next week, but figured I wanted to go ahead and get this out there.)

For the last eleven years of my life — roughly 4,015 days — through rain (like today), sleet and snow, I’ve moved myself out of bed every weekday morning and made my way down to Manhattan’s Flatiron District, to enter the SLAM Dome. I moved from Atlanta to New York City  to work for SLAM in the fall of 2000. The first issue I worked on was SLAM #46, the issue with T-Mac on the cover in his Orlando uniform. I worked at the SLAM Dome through getting married, through losing family members, through gaining family members, through 9/11, through the New York City blackout. There were snowstorms and rainstorms and heatwaves and subway outages.

Last summer, I started thinking about how I was surpassing a decade of obsessively covering the NBA full-time for SLAM. The thought was staggering. Almost one-third of my life has been spent sitting here at this desk in the SLAM Dome, where I am sitting right now, trying to tell stories as best as I could, and also doing whatever I could to help other people’s words sing, too.

The more I tried to think about not leaving, the more I thought about what it would be like to not be here every day. And I constantly have ideas and thoughts and dreams and other things I’d love to pursue, but I haven’t been able to.

So, getting to the point: As of this Friday, I will no longer be a full-time editor here at SLAM.

What does that mean? Well, we’re not really sure just yet. I’ll get a fancy new title like Editor at Large. I’m still going to write a lot in every issue of SLAM, will still write on the site. The Links will probably go from the homepage to the drop-down menu, but the biggest change is that I won’t be working out of the SLAM office any longer. And now I’ve got the free time I’ve been dreaming about to chase down other dreams.

What are those dreams? Well, that’s a great question. Right now, besides SLAM, I’ve already got a few pots on the stove. I’m still rep for SLAM on bigger stages, doing things like NBA TV and the podcast on NBA.com (50th episode is available here). My memoir is out and, kinda amazingly, has been getting some great reviews. (BTW, if you’re around NYC, I’m doing a reading on Monday night, April 4, at 7:00 PM at The Half King.) I’m writing essays about random lifestyle things in each issue of Antenna magazine, and I’m working on a food website for guys (it launched this week and my first column is up here).

That’s what I’m up to now. And I love all of that. We nailed all this down on Tuesday, and I left the office on Tuesday night and felt excited. For the first time in a really long time, it feels like I’ve got an open road ahead of me. The only excuse I have for not making my hopes and dreams come true will be that either I screwed it up or that I wasn’t good enough.

Am I good enough? I think so, and I hope so. Mostly, I’m looking forward to finding out.

It feels weird to write this, because it feels like I’m writing a goodbye letter. But this isn’t goodbye, it’s just…I’ll be seeing less of you, at least around here on SLAMonline. Most people who read SLAM might not be able to tell any difference. I’m already working on a couple of things for issues of SLAM down the road, including something for issue 150 that should be tremendous if we can pull it together.

Anyway, let me know if the site gets crappy and I’ll post Ryne’s cell phone number in the comments section so you guys can complain directly to him. But I don’t anticipate having to do that. SLAM is in great hands. I’m still in the huddle, I’m just not one of the guys in middle.

I have no idea what’s next, but I hope to see you there. And I’ll definitely see you here.

Been along for the Lang journey from the start (well from issue #2 really…semantics) and this feels like a goodbye.
One of my best experiences on twitter was asking Lang to follow me and letting him know it who was using the DS alias.
    Mr. Whitaker didn’t even hesitate.
He was also involved in my only online contest ever; the Nba Live ’10 contest.
Got major respect and yes even admiration for the man and his Slam legacy.
All the best in your future projects and lasting success, Lango.
And as usual; I envy you your career.

Best of luck! It’s great to see you pushing your talents forward. You’re a very talented scribe–my favourite at SLAM–and I hope to see your efforts rewarded. Richly.

    omg Lang…
what’s gonna happen to the Links and us Linkstigators???

  • BP

Congratulations Lang and thank you for all the energy you’ve put into putting up an enjoyable and informative read for so long.

I think I’ve been reading The Links since back in 2001 or 2002…so long ago I can’t remember. I loved those pre 24/7 news cycle days when reading The Links was my daily ritual and a great one-stop shop for all things NBA.

    Your name will ring out!

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

btw, love the line “I’m still in the huddle, I’m just not one of the guys in middle.”
you need to TM it, Lang. unless it already is…

i’ve also been a long time lang whitaker fan ever since he ran the links when it was the grey background/verdana font era. i once wrote him an e-mail when i was in second year high school telling him i know i wasn’t his primary target market since i was a teenage girl back then living in far away philippines but i was one of his most loyal follower and his articles and daily links were things that i really looked forward to. he graciously replied, which i still have that somewhere in my inbox. i’m now 23, and still a big fan..

    good luck with everything, sir.

  • Milan

Wow, good luck wherever the road takes you Lang.
This might sound sad, but Links have been a part of my life for years now, loyal reader, if not commenter. I also plan on picking up a copy of your book one of these days.

  • Myung

You’ve earned it, Lang. The Links (back in the gray/orange days) got me through my first job after UGA. Thanks for all your hard work on this site.

  • http://slamonline.com Susan Price

Will not be the same without you in the office (to make fun of everyone). I just might make shrimp and pretzels for dinner tonight in your honor.

  • Myung

PS. You never replied back to my Facebook post on your page… I wanted to drop by and get a copy of your Bobby Cox book signed, but I didn’t know when/where you would be signing. Any more Atlanta book signings coming up?

    good luck, lang!

I’ve been checking The Links since the days of the gray background and animated .gifs. Checking Slamonline every day has been enjoyable for me, and I hope the quality stays tight. Good luck with your future endeavors, Lang.

I know you mentioned it at the top of the page but, I just can’t get passed this might be an April Fool’s joke. lol

  • Maurice Bobb

Lang, one of the best to ever do it. No need to wish you luck in your future endeavors…you already winning

  • Fat Lever

Lang, best of luck! Must be a great feeling to not know what’s on the horizon, but having the confidence to take that step. I’ve been reading the links for almost 10 years now, and Lang is one of my favorite writers on these here Internets. Do your thing!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Bittersweet. I wish my man all the best in his future work….but this is his home and like Ben O said on Twitter he basically built Slamonline. From reading his work on the mag, following him for 10 years now on the site, thinking about all the hilarity I got from the Links, reading through some of the best comment sections due to a piece he posted….this place won’t be the same. I wish that this could have been a n April Fools Joke, but I understand. I STILL contend that some of the most compelling writing I ever took in were the days after 9/11 and Lang’w writings about the day to day in the city. It kept a displaced NY/NJ native in touch with how the old stomping grounds were coping with our worst national tragedy and to this day, I can’t thank him enough for that. Know that your “family” is always here Lang…..your spirit will always be.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. Just be this nice to me next week when I post my picks for the all NBA postseason awards and everyone gets all prickly again.

I’d be saddened if you didn’t have a Hawks/Lakers Final prediction.

The best moments in life make us pause and remember. The worst do the same.
This news falls somewhere in the middle, but the writing is on the wall, in the mag and in our memories. And I think we have all remembered the ride.

Good luck Lang. Reading the original Links back in the day got me through a lot of slow work days. Its been fun getting an inside look at the life of an NBA “insider”. Props to you for having the guts to chase the bigger things in life. Hope for nothing but the best for you.

That’s exciting and scary and everything else — all at once. Fortune favors the bold! Can’t wait to see all the stuff that comes next.

I’m glad to see some knowledgeable old-school heads on here so I don’t have to do too much schooling. For one thing, this is very well-written like everything Lang does. But the main point I wanted to make, which I did tweet earlier today, is that all the young bucks who joined the SLAMonline community in the last year or two (and I’m proud to say that community is at about 500k and growing right now) might know Lang more for his occasional Links column and great features in the mag. But really, from 2001-2005 or so, he WAS Slamonline. Built this thing from scratch. Thank you Lang for doing that, and thank you to all the readers who have been down since then or just joined the fun recently. And, as Lang said, at least this is not any type of formal goodbye.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

    I’m definitely picking a Hawks/Lakers Finals.

  • http://www.nba.com/nets/news/View_from_the_Couch.html Ben Couch

Cheers, Lang. Been a good time reading you here through all the years and redesigns. Keep doing you, and I hope to continue to see ya ’round the NBA. Enjoy the adventure!

Lang, thank you. Best of luck, I’ll be reading anything credited to you.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

Wow, I don’t know what to say. The links were my entree into an arena where my thoughts about my love of all things basketball were listened to. Lang made sure I felt welcomed in the comments, and even posted a question or two of mine when the Links didn’t have a comment section per se. Until Slamonline, I’d always felt like an interlorper. Like, “you’re a girl, what would you know?” Lang said, dam this chic knows the game, and I think because of that, my viewpoint here got respected. I could be wrong in this assessment, but it sure felt this way. Lang also made me feel (and still encourages to this day) like I could write for a living, and I’m still pursuing that. So, even though this is not good-bye, Lang, I still want you to know how much of an influence you’ve been for me and how much I’ve appreciated that. And of course, the spitting water through my nose laughs at your stories are my favorite things. Please stay in touch, dude. And send me your contact if it is changing. Dude, it’s not going to be the same, eventhough I know Slamonline is in good hands.

I been down with SLAM the magazine since #12, but just recently got my SLAMonline commenter on about two years ago.
I wasn’t here in the old days, but I knew from reading the mags that Lang was a huge part of the website as well as the mag.
Thanks for all you’ve done and will continue to do, Lang.
    And good luck to you.

Back in HS, i sent Lang an Email the day after Kobe’s 81 point game & he posted it on The Links, i didnt notice i was using my mom’s computer til i logged on The Links the next day and saw that “she” was now published on SLAMonline, talking sh!t about Kobe, no less. So thats kinda dope. Good luck “Langy” #melovoice

Co-signing all of the positive comments, but mostly Myles’. (OK, and Eboy’s. And Ben’s. And Susan’s. Etc.) The office won’t be the same, but very excited to see what comes next, and happy you’ll still be sticking around in the mag/site.

  • Khalid Salaam

Lang, thanks for being you and for growing the site. and for the 1000 funny moments you provided…

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Lang bought me lunch on my first day at the SLAM Dome, and it’s been downhill ever since. Ha, seriously, though… Lang’s stamp on SLAMonline will never be forgotten. We’re just adding and tweaking. On a personal level, Lang’s advice has been invaluable — on everything from proper word selection to locker room etiquette.

    This sucks…
I don’t know whether to say congrats or %^$#$@@#&*&^!!!!
Anyway, shout out to Lang for holding it down at SLAM and SLAMonline for like, forever, and giving me advice on that NBA 2K11 thing that one time.
    He knows what it is.
So in words that I know that he can relate to I leave you with this:
“Even the sun goes down, heroes eventually die, horoscopes, often lie // and sometimes why, nothing is fa ‘sho, nothing is for certain, and nothing lasts forever…”

Damn Lang, you are the reason I got to slamonline.com everyday since I was in college

  • Jj

    Lang, i’ll miss you.

Your links were the brightest light at the darkest of periods. You got me through some tough times just by making me laugh, u should know…

Ive always been a loyal Jazz fan… Ill always treasure the links in 03-04!

If i’m reading slamonline today… 10 years later… Its only cause of you. Since youre leaving, ill retire the Jj…

One last thing: Is there a way i can purchase a signed copy of your book and have it sent to Argentina?

    I’m out like Ben Handlogten

Well, it’s April 2 here so I guess this is no joke. The Links got me through my studying days. Seriously. Every day, at around 11am, I’d take my own 10-20 minute break to read The Links. I’d forward it to my basketball loving friends. We’d discuss at lunch. Even got my emails posted a few times. Linkstigator. Remember THE BEST THING EVER! Occasionally, Langs name would be scribbled out (in the logo that someone made and sent in) with the words ‘Sam’ and ‘Rubenstein’. Madden battles. Anyway, great to hear we’ll still get the always excellent magazine work as well as the odd Links post. Good luck with everything Lang.
