All hail king of the backpackers for he has returned!

After 3 weeks of nothing to write about I’ve finally stumbled upon something that moved me. Something that is essential to my well-being. Good music! Now some of you might be saying to yourself there is tons of good music out there. In your head listing the likes of Lil Wayne, Jeezy and Sam’s favorite dip set’s Capo Jim Jones, or some of you might start to think about music that has been out for a minute now. I am tired of listening to old music and I think L’il Wayne is the worst hot rapper ever. He is ok but not great folks. You don’t have to settle for 800 punch lines that go nowhere not to mention he kisses dudes on the lips. THAT’S NOT GANGSTA! I think you deserve better honestly and that’s why I am here to inform you if you didn’t know already about Kanyes’s latest mix tape.

I’ve been waiting for new music and I‘ve been lucky to find a couple of freestyles here and there, Swizz has been significant to my musical welfare in these last couple of months. But no full mix-tapes, no albums, nothing I can put on and listen straight through, it’s been really rough for me. I’ve been cranking massive amounts of dancehall and R&B in my head which is all good but I truly miss my first love; And besides as good as Vybz Kartel and Amy Winehouse are they can’t quite scratch my hip hop itch. But early this week when I walked into the office my man Branden Peters (lifestyle Editor of XXL) was playing some new Kanye, and man o man that ish was HOTT! After his long hiatus, the king of the backpackers has returned with much to say and my ears are wide open as yours should be. The drought of good music is now over, no more of that chipmunk with a mop on his head screaming he’s the best rapper alive and stories about him and his daddy riding motorcycles together. Kanye is honestly among the top three rappers that is currently making music and a lot of you forgot because he hasn’t released anything in a while. But we all remember how he shut the game down when both college dropout and late registration came out. And several head banging mix tapes ehhh umm second semester.

This joint has new cuts from Common, Kanye and a special track dedicated to people like me and former SLAM editor and chief Ryan Jones by PM called hater family. The graduation will be coming soon as he informs us on the mix-tape. The title of the mix-tape is “Can’t tell me nothing” but it would have been cool if he kept his college theme and named it “My thesis paper” but he didn’t so download Can’t tell me nothing or buy it today .

Off the topic of music something a lil more basketball related! Is this real or fake?

    the video is obviously fake. as for the kanye tape, i just got it, and it’s fire. too bad the rest of the hip hop scene makes me want to slit my wrists. (i think weezy is on the new tape, and this is what he says on that ‘c.o.l.o.r.s’ song: “when you’re really rich, asparagus is yummy”. that’s the best rapper in the world, folks. asparagus is yummy! oy)

    I stopped listening to Jones a while ago, though his youtube rants are usually must-see TV. As far as the state of hip hop music, well that’s why I went to a prog metal/hardcore show a few weeks ago.

    that Kanye tape is refreshing. Some of it is odd though, like the track with the girl singing about having her toes and nails done. I, too am screaming “wait til I get my money right” to all of the members of the “hater family” I come into contact with.

    Cub, the answer to that is Mastodon. Dream Theater is for people who were put off by the hard coreness of Queensryche IMO
    Omar Mazariego has moved on to a better place – a site that is going to pay him to write. He said he finished negotiations and he’ll have the url for us soon enough. There’s an orientation period and stuff (?). Don’t worry I already accused him of selling out and warned him not to move out to the burbs.

    Popular hip hop = mostly wack. Good sh-t: K-Os, Kool Keith, Deltron 3030, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Blackalicious, Danger Doom, Fatlip. It’s still out there, you just have to look for it. Oh, and thanks for not writing about some new neon sunglasses or some sh-t.

    And Konate, I don’t hate Kanye, especially not when HE SAMPLES F*CKING THOM YORKE. I almost crapped at my desk when I heard that joint. Among other things, it reminds me that I need to buy another copy of The Eraser, which I haven’t been able to find since I moved. Thank you for posting this. I emailed Khalid last week to ask if there was any good new hip-hop out, as I’m so far out of the loop now. So this is appreciated. For once, I’m glad I hired you.

    Why would you expect rappers like Lil Wayne and Jim Jones to come out with good music? They’re not musicians, they’re entertainers. And I know you guys are in NYC, but if you think hip hop is dead, check out some west coast stuff. Blackalicious, Blue Scholars, Lifesavas, Tha Alkaholiks, People Under The Stairs, Heiroglyphics, Murs and Jurassic 5 are a few.

    James – I have tried to get the guys to listen to one of my metal playlists while playing hoops, and every single time they look at me like I am evil incarnate. They then make me switch to a rap playlist. Mind you, most of these guys are white and from the suburbs. Playing ball to Slayer, Slipknot, old Metallica, old Godsmack, etc., would make even Dirk aggressive.

Bone Thugs N Harmony, got there new album out(strength & Loyalty) and are on the new DJ Khalid track The Originators. You want good music listen to them, then listen to everyone else in the industry who copied there style

    Jazzy Jeff’s got a hot new album out. Listening to it now. Hip hop ain’t dying, but it’s on life support. Agreed on Deltron, Lifesavas, MF Doom. They’re like the IV that’s going into hip hop while it’s in the hospital. All the rappers out there with Lil in front of their names are like the guys in the Godfather, trying to sneak into the hotel to finish off the hit so they can take over. And I can’t talk about hip hop without shouting out J-Live.
