2008-09 Top 100 High School Girl’s Prospects

Brittney Griner and Kelsey Bone lead the way as Texas does it BIG.

By Kelvin Powell

The state of Texas is staking a claim as the most fertile of grounds for big-time high-school girls basketball and it’s doing it in a big way…a really big way. As in Houston’s Nimitz High’s 6-8 forward Brittany Griner leads a bevy of talented post players from the state of Texas. Griner, featured in the next issue of SLAM and discussed here on Slamonline last week by Aggrey, is the Preseason National Player of the Year according to Roundball Journal and gaining notoriety nationally (and internationally) for her array of YouTube highlight videos—highlights in which Griner is shown dunking in a variety of posterizing ways. Not to be out done is another Houston product, Dulles High’s Kelsey Bone. Bone is a 6-5 center who dominates in the low post but also has an improving jump shot and great ball-handling skills for someone her size. Griner and Bone are one and two, respectively, in the Class of ’09. Amazingly, Houston is not the only Texas city producing great players in this year’s class. In fact, five of this year’s top 20 players are from Texas, with Waco’s Cokie Reed (4), Diboli’s Nikki Green (9) and another H-Town player, Waltia Rolle, joining Griner (pictured below) and Bone. What is even more amazing about the state’s pedigree is that all of these players stand 6-5 or taller. And if you think any of this is an anomoly, think again. Houston’s Nneka Ogwumike was one of the top two or three players in America last year, and her younger sister Chiney is arguably the best junior in the class of 2010.

To see how we rank all these great Texas-based players, as well as the rest of the top 100, please check the rankings below and feel free to share your thoughts.

I care, too, and not only because my Lady Lions have two top-20 recruits. Also, Mr. Powell, nice work. I loved you on the first season of the Real World.

This makes me sad about Delledonne.

  • witness

    Brittany Griner is a beast.

  • justin

Yeah Delledonne is wack. It must not be hard to pull chicks that are tall, because Sheldon Williams got Candice Parker and yall know how ugly he is.

    One MA. Ranked 71. Sigh.

Lots of talent coming up. Good to see the Illini pick up some top recruits. Law is for real! Northwestern’s on the rise too. I’m all for anything that gives DePaul some competition in this state…

SO…. If you are talking about prospects (not just players graduating this year), then where is Tomilayo Akinpetide? She’s the 6th man/girl for Monteverde Academy in Orlando. And she’s 13. C’mon. She’s already been offered college scholarships to places like Duquesne University. Shes 5’10 already and plays the point.
    SHE is a HUGE prospect.

What’s good, Hursty? Good morning, my man.

  • Kate

So how can this be so far off HoopGurlz? Anne Marie Armstrong dropping from 41 on Hoops Gurlz to 51 here? Give me a break. She’s carried her team to 2 state championships (and one runner-up) and is Miss Georgia Basketball. Keep in mind too that she is a three-sport athlete – and has SEVEN state championships to show her all-around skills.

See Wesleyan playing in the Nike Tournament this December and you’ll see that she should definitely be rated higher than this.

Kate, I will be out at the NIKE TOC and looking forward to seeing Anne Marie of Wesleyan. She is no doubt a talent. Let’s see how’s she does against some of the other top players and teams. In this case, playing three sports may not be good for her bball ranking.

“2008-09 Top 100 High School Girl’s Prospects” could be interpreted badly, heh heh

I spent all of last season covering Morgan Toles (prospect number 54). She’s an outstanding player, but she’s not even the best point guard in the county. I can’t believe that Tessah Holt of Fayette County, Ga. didn’t make this list. She was the best girls player I saw all of last year. She carried her team to the state championship game. Her and Toles are in the same region this year and I can’t wait to see them go head to head.

check out no.9 rodgers at g.town next year.her game is tight.

Lakevia (#73) is bad as hell dawg…
she killed enloe, but Shala Hodges needs to be up here. She’s from Enloe High out of Raleigh. Shala gave her 50!

  • jen

It’s sad to see Ashley Wilson from Wheeling, Il didn’t make the top 100, which incidentally is averaging 20 pts and 10 rebounds a game to start the season, team is off to a 10-0 start.

To: (Mr. Edgar) Subject: Fayette Co. vs Sandy Creek girls high school basketball game. I to could not wait for that match up. I was there and it was a great game. Tessah Holt of Fayette Co. held her own. But, that Toles girl showed me why she is ranked. Holt played a super game, and she had a little more help from her teammates. M. Toles with no help. She took her team, put them on her shoulder and almost beat Fayette Co. “One” of the best games I’ve seen all year. Great game from both girls.

Griner is the future of women’s there should be an article on how she could go straight to the WNBA from high school. She would have been the #1 pick in this years draft
