Breaking: Wall to Kentucky

The nation’s top high school PG picks his college.

by Aggrey Sam

WallSources tell SLAM that John Wall, the nation’s top high school point guard, committed to the University of Kentucky tonight. Wall picked Kentucky over Duke, Miami and Florida, among other schools. The 6-4 senior from Word of God in Raleigh, N.C., is viewed as the missing piece for new Wildcats coach John Calipari.

With forward Patrick Patterson recently deciding to return to school (and high-scoring guard Jodie Meeks rumored to also be considering pulling out of the NBA Draft) and recruits like Alabama big man DeMarcus Cousins, as well as a talented core group of returnees, Kentucky is likely to be one of the favorites to win a national championship in 2010. While Alabama point guard Eric Bledsoe signed up to play in Lexington recently, in Calipari’s dribble-drive motion offense, multiple ballhandlers can play together in the up-tempo style. In addition, the recent SLAM co-cover boy is viewed as a one-and-done prospect.

Aside from Patterson, Meeks, Cousins and Bledsoe, other future teammates who will benefit from Wall’s playmaking ability include sharpshooting juco recruit Darnell Dodson, incoming freshman big man Daniel Orton and athletic sophomore wings DeAndre Liggins and Darius Miller. Long story short, don’t be surprised if you catch a case of deja vu when you watch Big Blue play next season–Wall will remind you a lot of Derrick Rose and with him on the team, Calipari could have another team back in the chip.

  • Jose Posted: May.19 at 2:14 am
“Wall will remind you a lot of Derrick Rose and with him on the team, Calipari could have another team back in the chip.” That last sentence makes it sound too much like Calipari won the championship game against Kansas. Sorry.

  • Section 137 Posted: May.19 at 2:17 am
I hope this is legit!! Final Four with Wall.

  • timmy Posted: May.19 at 2:23 am

uk will still not win a championship next year

  • Jon harris Posted: May.19 at 4:16 am
With Coach Cal at the helm, Kentucky will not win a NC. Cal is a great recruiter but is a terrible bench coach. With the team he had at Memphis with D Rose and company, up by 9 points with two minutes to go and choked!!!

  • Jim Jones Posted: May.19 at 4:17 am
yeah says you. Who is your favorite team? I hope Kentucky plays them.

  • Up way to Late Posted: May.19 at 4:54 am
If this is legit, the only thing that will STOP UK from a FF bid will be themselves. How freakin’ amazing is it that Cal pulls in the best recruiting class EVER in his first year at Kentucky? Its really mind boggling sh*t for a program that is still in a major transition period and fallen off so far the national radar.
Loaded everywhere…and if Meeks comes back…pre-season #1 son (yes over KU). KY fans have been accused of setting expectations high before and this team will take time to gel, but I’m not buying Cal’s suggestions that the fan base needs to tone it down. My God, this is something special and this could be the CATalyst that changes the college basketball landscape for years to come. It’s going to be simply awesome and I’ve never been more optimistic about the chances of the greatest program ever climbing back to their rightful place atop the totem pole. Go Big Blue!!!

Calipari was already ONE of the best recruiters in the country. Now that he has the Kentucky name he will be THE best recruiter in the country and he has shown that early and often. Kentucky will have the best recruiting class in the country next year too. Mark it down.

  • Josh Posted: May.19 at 6:05 am

I think, for many UK fans, the return to even being in the discussion will be enough. ‘They expect a championship every season.’ Please. I’ve not heard a single one say that.

  • SLONER Posted: May.19 at 8:03 am
“uk will still not win a championship next year” Wow! That’s a real bold statement. You could say that about any team in the country (UNC, KU, Mich St any team) and have a really good shot at being right. You might end up being right (the odds are in your favor), but if you can put your Kentucky hating aside; you have to admit that Kentucky has as good a shot at the title as any team in the country barring any serious injuries or conflicts. Go BIG BLUE!

I agree topcity, and I’m a UK fan. Realistically, we have 6 new players, who have never played a college game in their lives. Plus, a brand new system to learn. I can understand being excited about the talent we are bringing in, but I think to call us instant national title contenders is a bit premature. And any rate, GO CATS!!!!

  • WyldeKat Posted: May.19 at 9:04 am
We don’t have to win a Championship NEXT YEAR. We just want to be competing for them again. We WILL win another Championship soon. Maybe not next year. Personally, I think it’s going to take a couple seasons with veteran players to get used to Calipari’s offense before we have a serious chance. But, we’re so loaded now … even without Wall we had a phenomenal class that many were already placing in the Elite 8. No Topcity, maybe we won’t win the Championship next year … but, you’ll hear our name when people are talking about it.

It’s hard to tell which of the hate mail is posted by Louisville fans and which is posted by Memphis fans. The Memphis fans are understandably bitter right now, as we were about 12 years ago when a coach packed up & left Lex in the middle of the night. They’ll be all right when the new coach gets settled. The Cards section on the Courier Journal site is full of people sharing blonde jokes - seriously.

  • tenncat Posted: May.19 at 5:57 pm
Oops - hit “send” too soon! The season should be fun and exciting every minute. For now, it’s great fun watching Coach Calipari’s enthusiasm build and the anticipation balloon. It’s a fine time to be a Wildcat.
I wish only two things today - that Mr. Bill “Wildcat” and my father could be here to enjoy this moment. They are doing a happy dance in heaven.

  • AR Posted: May.19 at 7:00 pm

I believe this was all planned from the beginning of last season for Cal to go to Kentucky it all seems obvious he got all of his recruits to sign a waiver in their LOI that they can be released if he was not the coach here at Memphis this is the biggest piece of crap coach of all time he will disappoint the Kentucky fans with his great way of words but he will not produce on the sidelines.

  • AR Posted: May.20 at 5:12 pm
Good point Gene, but if I were in a similar position, I’d go to the U. For one, he can pad his stats better than he could on a stacked Kentucky team. Two, he could wind up in Minnesota next year for all he knows. BTW, I have absolutely no connection to Miami. I’m just playing devils advocate here.
