USA U19 Men Capture Gold Medal At The FIBA World Championships

The U19 National team wins first title at the FIBA U19 World Championships since 1991.

The  American U19 team defeated Greece, 88-80, on Sunday night, snapping an 18 year drought at the FIBA U19 World championships while finishing with a perfect 9-0 record at the tourney in Auckland, New Zealand. Kansas’ Tyshawn Taylor led the way with 18 points. “We really set as a goal to win the gold medal. We also made it very clear that we hadn’t won this since 1991, we talked about that and we used that as motivation throughout the month we’ve been together and I think it was really an important part of our work ethic and what we did. We did a great job of committing to one another for a month and I thought it was just great. We had great kids that worked all the way through and committed to getting the gold medal and gave up, sacrificed individual glory,” said Jamie Dixon of Pittsburgh, head coach of the U19 national team.

Was at the final here in NZ… USA def the best there. Tyshawn Taylor is NBA bound – except he’s a little roadblocked at Kansas. Also thought Mario Delas and Toni Prostran for Croatia are serious names for the future.

Really good tourney, was great having all the games screened live on TV too. US were too good really, co-sign re: Taylor Mike, and I liked the look of Hayward as well. Let’s not forget the Kiwi lads, thought they boxed well above their weight. Rob Loe, remember the name.

Liked Dion Prewster, Rob Loe and Brook Ruscoe… and if Richie Edwards just cleans up that shot selection a bit… then he’ll make it too.

And yeah, the final was packed out – plenty of noise – was really impressed. Will be interested to see how Gibbs comes along under Coach Dixon at Pitt… has a weird looking shot which he manages to make go for the most part. Has good court vision too.

Gordon Wayward really impressed me in the semi-final, but didn’t do much in the final
