NCAA: Derrick Rose Ineligible

by Ryne Nelson

The word sizzling around the ‘Net is ‘vacated.’ It’s used in almost every reference to the ’07-08 Memphis Tigers Final Four season, which apparently is now magically erased. It didn’t exist. Take out a flashy thingy and it’s gone. From the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

The most explosive revelation in the report involves Derrick Rose, the former Tigers point guard who allegedly was admitted to Memphis on a fraudulent SAT exam and retroactively ruled ineligible by the NCAA. According to the report, Rose took the SAT on May 5, 2007 – just more than a month before enrolling in classes at Memphis – in Detroit, not in his hometown of Chicago. Rose had previously failed the ACT test three times, all of which were taken in Chicago.

The report states that the infractions committee “did not need to make a determination as to whether (Rose) engaged in unethical conduct” because the subsequent cancellation of his test score by the Educational Testing Service was a “strict liability” situation.

To paraphrase, Derrick Rose didn’t take his SAT — making him ineligible — but the NCAA Clearinghouse allowed Rose to play. Despite Memphis not having any knowledge of this, the NCAA held Memphis accountable, ‘vacating’ all 38 wins that season. No penalties going forward other than a three-year “heightened review” period, which means that next time, when a Memphis player doesn’t take the SAT, he might not play. Sheesh. This is how NCAA Committee on Infractions leader Paul Dee explained the penalties:

“The penalties in this case were determined by looking at where the blame lied in this situation. Having penalties going forward … is really the dilemma you have. Where should you focus the penalty? We decided to focus the penalty on the time the penalties occurred.”

To paraphrase, the NCAA would never drag John Calipari through the mud, and Derrick Rose… well, he’s Derrick Rose. Memphis finishes with a slap on the wrist. Teleconference done.

It gets funnier, though. This wasn’t the first time a Calipari-led team went to Final Four, only to be later nullified. The NCAA stripped the UMass Minutemen of their 1996 NCAA Tournament victories because Marcus Camby accepted money from agents while still a student-athlete. UMass was dominant with Calipari at the helm. The team played some spectacular basketball that fans will never forget.

The NCAA is essentially extending the same non-punishment again by nullifying Memphis’ achievements. It hasn’t learned that removing honors does nothing.

Nearly the entire Tiger team ‘vacated’ Memphis after finishing as the national runners-up and owners of the most wins in college history. Let’s see where the key perpetrators are now:

Star (Derrick Rose) — Free, rich, famous, superstar
Coach (John Calipari) — Big fat raise at storied program
Athletic Director (RC Johnson) — Gainfully employed

The winners continue their success and the NCAA follows them, brushing away the tracks with an invisible brush. Sorry, ‘vacating’ doesn’t work. As if we’ll really forget who won those games. That’s just funny.

Sucks for Memphis. Cheaters never win. Unless you play baseball.

It’s weird because I can still remember it….

no izzo it was just a dream

Damn, not to be harsh… but failing the ACT three times?

  • jose

This is nothing new, it just so happens Mempshis got caught. There is so much BS when it comes to recruiting in D1 sports it is not funny. I think a lot of blame needs to be placed on the people who passed Drose through high school all those years. A 17 on the ACT is not that hard. Also, the NCAA needs to get rid of this whole Student-athlete shtick for Major college sports. We also could have a setup like europe where you play pro when you are about 14 and the club pays for your education. Instead of this “amateuer NCAA” status crap. DRose just needs to be able to do simple arithmetic i.e. 2.5 million plus 5 million and so on. AGGHHHH! I hate the NCAA I am now off my soapbox

I’m figuring the NCAA is gonna send Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith around the country with that mind-zapper thing. “What you saw was swamp gas, reflected off a weather balloon…”

  • Teddy-the-Bear

55-55 expellable, Rose was nice so they made sure he was eligible//Pretty final, that year played the March finals…

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

You’re going to see more and more of this since the NBA is forcing guys with no business going to college into the NCAA.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Spaceship Jay

    I’m with you Z.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

It figures he took (or didn’t take?) the test in question in Detroit.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

lol. I mentioned the Men in Black in the other post.

  • tit tat

When i listen to a postgame int. with Rose i thought it was the interviewer’s questions that made him seem retarted. But now i know he was just a dumbass.

  • Pancho

This is soooo gonna work against the NCAA as an entity itself. Look for A LOT MORE young kids from high school to pull off the Brandon Jennings-Jeremy Tyler trip to Europe.
Get paid and ball all day or deal with this crap?
    No question.

  • CJK

Yeah Z i know what you mean.. I love Derrick rose, he’s my fave player in the L, but seriously man, take time to learn. failing it once is bad enough.

  • Blue

Great thing the NCAA caught this AFTER they made their money. Seriously, I would put more stock in their whole righteous “clean up” act if they did it during the season…

  • http://www.daytonastate.edu/athletics/ White Chocolate*DSC*

If you knew your only had to go to college for one year then you get to get payed millions of dollars you wouldn’t care if you got good grades or passed a test. your more focused on making sure your handles and jumpshot are ready

  • http://www.nba.com JE

It’s not like David Stern allowed for much choice in the matter, anyway. I’d consider this a bigger deal if Derrick Rose had the option of going straight to the NBA. I go to UK, and I know good and well that the athletes get a free ride academically — Calipari or no Calipari. I had class with Patrick Patterson my (our) freshman year, and virtually every class he would show up about 30 minutes late, hand the professor a sheet of paper, and leave. In all honesty, as long as he puts up 20 and 10 every night, I don’t care. He’s going to college to prep himself for *his* future, just as students striving for a degree in computer engineering are doing for themselves.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    What’s a memphis tiger?

  • la huey

did someone just spell “retarded” incorrectly?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

This goes far deeper than the NCAA and how they deal with so-called student athletes. Without a whole treatise on public education in the U.S., this is an example of the low expectations of educators re: black male children. If they can play ball, push ‘em through. If they can’t, put them in special ed, look for reasons to suspend or expel or simply look the other way when they drop out. I don’t know what his family life is like, but his brother seemed to be the one to look out for him. Make sure the kid gets educated before you make a franchise out of him. Dam.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Its just sad because you have to be pretty stupid to fail the act 3 times. Its not good by any stretch to be stupid whether you’re an athlete or not. On the other hand I think the ncaa should really punish everyone and vacate itself from earth. That would really show us, please make this happen.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

btw, i don’t give a sh!t about the memphis wins being “vacated”. I care about the kids.

    Co-sign Cheryl. Educate Ms. Lady.

  • Big D

Don’t you get like a 15 just for spelling your name right? 17?? Wow, a person would have to really not pay attention starting at 7th grade to fall under 17 for 3 times in a row.

  • Shu

So here’s a little curveball. When the bulls are announcing their starting line-up, they’ll say “from Florida… Joa-kim Noah!!!” “from urrrr… Simeon Academy near Chicago and not from Memphis anymore, Deeeeeeeeerrrrick Rooooooose!!!”????

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

This really has come out as the “perfect crime” scenario for me. I was having a discussion with one of the guys at work about reconstructing the ‘perfect crime’, this could just about be it – Derrick Rose gets to play out a year of excellent basketball, setting himself up for millions of dollars for the rest of his life, the campus get the attention and accolades of being successful and still remain a powerhouse, verily untouched for the future. The coach at the time, remains in position (essentially being able to have his hands washed of the situation (again??)) as does the identity of the campus program. My question is this:
Where are the markers for the SAT? Are they held accountable on any level? Did they receive some incentive to allow Derrick Rose to ‘pass’? Surely there is something brown in the waters of the windy city….somewhere. Moneymen & Gangsters still exist on some level, thats for sure.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Why is Rose holding up a “3″ on his fingers? Is that the score he would have gotten if he wrote the SAT himself?

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/christopher_sells-authorHV106.html chiqo

    more alleged gang signs probably.

  • B-more Mike

You can’t win with Ricky Davis on your team!! He’s finished. Sorry for getting off topic.

  • B-more Mike

Teddy the bear: I’m feeling you wit the Killa Cam.

  • kwal

derrick rose is still sick. this won’t make me think differently about him at all.

  • HangTime Hec

These test are donkey turd not for just Athletes but students period. And I could care less about how intelligent Derrick Rose is or was. It has nothing to do with how great of a basketball player. This type of shady stuff happens all the time, the only diffrence here is that he got caught.

  • http://nba Darrell

Stallworth just killed a guy and Plaxico just got 2 years for shooting himself(thankfully nobody else). Its a alot more wrong in sports than this so called amature Org (ncaa) getting pimped by the athelete instead of the other way around. I bet they aint givin all that money he generated for them and the university through ticket sales,tv money, and jersey sells back.Plus you are not dumb just because you cant pass a certain test. I know plenty of people with good sense and business acumen that did not so good with standardized test.

  • Rnz

Well, you know,I’ve always thought that D-Rose always had that look of a basketball playing machine…he is an incredible player, one of my current favorite..but away from basketball, dude aint really showing signs of intelligence

  • Bryan Crawford

If you’re not from ‘The Chi’ then you couldn’t possibly understand what was at stake in the Derrick Rose situation. Two words…Ben Wilson. If you know that story then you’ll understand the reasoning behind the grade change and the ACT stand-in. D Rose HAD to make it, and people were going to make sure that he did…by any means necessary.

  • onions baby onions

bryan, i understand all of that. i’m just amazed that you can actually fail the act THREE times. wow. are we even sure that he was not having high school exams taken for him?

  • http://www.manutd.com z

yeah, 12:34a was me. slam is still having problems with this.

lets hear it for KU and their record 37-3 season!!!!!!!

  • Enigmatic

Bryan, I feel you on that whole Ben Wilson thing. I could care less what Derrick Rose did, and he may not be the smartest kid when it comes to non-basketball topics, but the fact of the matter is he’s a great basketball player and a great kid. Everybody wants to point the fingers at the athletes but never at the NCAA or the NBA. And what were you all doing at the age of 18, 19? I was out defending my country as a US Marine, that’s what I wanted to do. Rose wanted to play in the NBA, but was forced to go to college. Don’t quite seem fair to me….

  • http://www.facebook.com/rigo.gonzalez1 Enigmatic

    LOL @ Tarzan and KU.

  • underdog

Way to go NCAA, ever heard the word ‘prevention’?

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

well they should have let him go to the NBA out of HS.
oh well who cares. DRose is still awesome.

  • http://slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/fear/ Freedom Fries

Why are you all being so naïve. “The ACT” yada yada . . . . Neither the NCAA nor professional sports give a crap about their employees well being, education, business acumen, financial stability…. They only care about physical performance. Anyone who says or thinks otherwise must not live too much of their life on planet earth. Pro clubs in Europe take kids under their wing at ages like 13 and they split their time between hard core training and real world education. Maybe they won’t be so strong in geometry or the like but they get education that will help them as their careers progress (finances) and beyond. See it’s tailored for a future pro athlete NOT a potential future ACT/SAT genius. Unrealistic and incompatible expectations will mean that this type of scenario repeats itself as nauseam in the future.

  • http://slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/fear/ Freedom Fries

    “ad” nauseam

“To paraphrase, Derrick Rose didn’t take his SAT — making him ineligible — but the NCAA Clearinghouse allowed Rose to play. Despite Memphis not having any knowledge of this…”

That´s great, the NCAA infringing it´s self-imposed rules, but hey, these rules are great when you want to get rid of UNLV Runnin´ Rebels, or erase the Fab Five legacy.

  • ab_40

havn’t seen dumb ish like this since a belgian coach in the leauge there forfeited his teams no.2 position in the playofffs becasue they didn’t take all his orders haha.

but hey this is a dumb move, it makes no sense.

just like removing the fab 5 out of michigan like they never existed. there is a word for these kind of actions and it is… ignant

  • http://www.manutd.com z

cut the BS, guys. unrealistic expectations, blaming the ncaa blablabla. derrick rose (and countless other athletes) has problems with basic reading and writing skills. that’s a problem. it worked out great for him because he’s very very talented but what about the kids that will go down the exact same but won’t make it? what is lenny cooke up to these days? As of November 2008, Lenny Cooke works at the Food Lion Distribution Center in Prince George, Va as an order selector. where is pierre pierce?

  • Ryan D

NCAA Clearinghouse is a joke and if people really wanted to dig deep they can find shady practices by practically every every program in the country.

  • http://dsjklf.com Jukai

    Z is correct.
