SLAM Diary Keeper Harrison Barnes Chooses UNC

by Ryne Nelson

Don’t say there wasn’t any drama in Harrison Barnes’ letter of intent press conference. After thanking his supporters, the SLAM diarist got down to the business every media outlet within 100 miles came to capture: “The coach for whom I will play next year will be… the coach that I’m about to Skype.”

Barnes got up, amidst heightened and anxious cheers and moved over to a black MacBook sitting atop a podium. The computer gurgled Skype’s intro and the entire North Carolina team appeared live on a theater projector screen. For the first time in history, Ames HS had big-time college basketball in its relatively tiny gym.

When it came down to it, the SLAM high school diarist had his choice of the best schools in the nation. Sure, there was the talk about Kansas, Oklahoma and possibly UCLA or Iowa State. In the end, though, it came down to the behemoths: UNC or Duke.

Harrison not only fits-in at UNC, he’s going to thrive. With his all-around game (think Antawn Jamison) and extreme IQ (honors student), Harrison could become that piece that gives the Tar Heels the edge above all others next season.

Today, Harrison Barnes made it official: Skype has officially taken over the recruiting world.

I am so excited for Harrison, this is a great fit for him.

He promised something “creative” when I talked to him the other day. This is pretty good. They just picked up two dope guards for next year, too. Sorry Dookies.

3 ESPN Top 100 recruits in one day. All three of them in the top 25. Wow.

  • Raeniel Holgado

Good for Harrison. Only if Henson and Wear brothers stay pat, extremely deadly. We are all witnesses.

  • bakers’ dozen

Skype, huh? Guess thta’s another media outlet the NBA will ban players from eventually.

  • Justin

@Ryan Jones – Do you have any idea what you are talking about? They did not just pick up two dope guards for next year.

@Justin Walsh – no, not even close. Please do not listen to Ryan Jones in this matter, he as no clue what he is speaking on.

Good kid, seen him play here locally all 3 yrs. Great pickup for the Heels. But he’s the type of player who’s most likely a one and done like Melo and Durant so how relevant is where he plays his one year of college( barring injury)?

Man, I was hoping Oklahoma to get a Tiny Gallon, Tommy Mason-Griffin & Barnes Trio.
If Ed Davis returns, this will be phenomenal.

    PG- Drew
    SG- Strickland or Bullock
    SF- Barnes
    PF- Henson
    C- Davis

    UNSTOPPABLE

Justin, you’re way off here. First, Ryan Jones generally knows what he’s talking about. Second, my opinions aren’t formed on his account, they’re formed on my own from seeing these players play.

Lucas: too true. However, Ed Davis is as gone as gone can be

I will always miss Roy in Lawrence cause he bought in all the top recruits. Dont get me wrong, I love Bill Self, but he cant ever seem to bring em. If it wasnt for Calipari going to KY we wouldnt even have Xavier Henry. Self needs to learn how to close.

ed davis is as over rated as can be

@Justin Walsh – what I meant is that those other two players have been verbally committed for some time now (especially Marshall). Just because they signed now, they have been coming all along. He stated that they all came in together on the same day. All 3 pretty far spaced out actually.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

@Justin – you should get a Twitter feed so you can put the shift-2 maneuver to better use. Stupid.

  • Do Work

Justin – Bullock and Marshall didnt sign officially until friday, the same day as Barnes. Therefore, the tar heels did land “2 dope guards” the same day that Barnes committed. everybody knows they’ve been verbally committed for a while now; but a verbal commitment doesn’t put you in a uniform.

Even without Davis UNC will still be top notch. Zeller is solid and can run the floor. I’m really pumped for next year.

yees i cant wait till i have pumpkin soup

  • clos1881

That was devastating for Duke. Coach K can’t get the players anymore, it started when he said I feel betrayed when playes leave early so why would a top player want to go there. Its over Duke fans!

  • skeeter

coach k will always be the best at signing “tweener” white guys

  • henry

    gotta love it

  • Hubert

    haha at Justin

Why pick UNC he should have picked a smaller college like Iowa State and take over

That is definitely a creative way to make such an announcement. I’m sure it grabbed everyone’s attention.
