The Legend Of Buckets-Bagger Lance

Is the NCAA ready for Lance Stephenson?

by Zach Smart

Lance “Born Ready” Stephenson bags buckets like the rest of us wake up in the morning. For those of us who aren’t hooked on Xanax or Tylenol PM pills, that’s early, often, and consistently.

Will Stephenson, a Brooklyn-bred baller who’s got all the tools to put together a one-and-done at Cincinnati this year, live up to the hype? A question of perhaps more importance: Will the kid they call ‘Born Ready’ be ready once the Bearcats kick-start their season against Saginaw Valley State November 5?

Conventional wisdom tells us that Stephenson will likely be cleared to play. The biggest issue is whether his online reality show thwarts his amateur status.

The NCAA has not ruled on his status. Stephenson is cleared to play academically, which is why the flashy 6-6 guard/wing has been practicing and scrimmaging with the Bearcats. He’s already developed a rapport with his teammates and is tight with guard/forward Sean Kilpatrick.

UC is expecting a decision to be made by the NCAA within two weeks, albeit there is no indication from them whether or not Born Ready will be ready from the get-go or at all.

Stephenson was a beast among boys last season, leading Lincoln High to their record fourth straight PSAL title. Stephenson averaged 28.9 points, 10.2 boards and 3.9 dimes, en route to being named a McDonald’s All-American and garnering NYS Class AA Player of the Year.

The recruiting saga of Stephenson — whose penchant for dazzling the crowd with emphatic and extravagant dunks added to his internet celebrity — tells like no other.

First it was Kansas. All signs pointed to Bill Self and former pro Danny Manning selling the wide-bodied, smooth operator. Then we heard Maryland was in the mix. The Maryland visit put Stephenson in hot water when Under Armour, the athletic apparel company of Brandon Jennings, gave the Stephenson family a tour of their headquarters in Baltimore.

Suddenly, the script flipped.

Word around the blazing Coney Island campfire was that Stephenson wasLance Stephenson going to stay home, and St. John’s would soon pen the highly sought after recruit. This could save the career of Norm Roberts, who had been active in Stephenson’s recruitment all along, we thought.

One rumor turned into another, and newly-minted Florida International head coach Isiah Thomas was mired in the conversations. Zeke, looking to resuscitate his image after his storm with the New York Knicks, thoroughly hounded Stephenson and a number of other highly courted recruits.

Sonny Vaccaro became involved. Tom Konchalski, the widely recognized prep scout who advised Stephenson when he tried out for the USA Under-18 national team and was cut for his body language, was involved. Konchalski was the subject of many interviews for stories about Stephenson.

The media began puncturing his image, saying Stephenson brought baggage. The analysts, pundits, naysayers and haters alike said Stephenson’s father, Lance Sr. (known as “Stretch”) was an ego maniac who wouldn’t send his son to a school where he wouldn’t be the man immediately.

Stephenson has wasted no time registering his presence in Bearcat country. He scored 22 points in 25 minutes in the team’s first intra-squad scrimmage.

Is the college hoops world ready for Stephenson? He’s taller, stronger and more versatile than the previous pro-bound prospects from Lincoln, Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair.

The legend of Buckets Bagger Lance continues this winter.

I like him but he got a screw loose, I personally seen him strip his own PG for not getting the ball during a charity game.

@ Da Hood He stole the ball from his own teammate?

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 4:14 pm
The kid can play. Now I’ve never watched him play a complete game, but from the sounds of everything and controversy surrounding him, he seems like a punk. Cut from the U-18 team for body language problems? That must’ve been pretty bad. Took so long to choose an NCAA team….damn.

Cincy is going to be a fun team to watch this season. They might even surprise a few teams in the Tourney. Now Lance just needs to be cleared asap!

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Nov.3 at 4:59 pm
    Tell ‘em, Stretch.

  • zachsmart Posted: Nov.3 at 5:06 pm
With Lance, Vaughn, Gates, Cash Wright, these guys have a core of game changers. With Pitt, Marquette, and other teams losing a lot of essential ingredients from last season, it’s wide open. Cincy has the chance to make some noise. Don’t sleep on 6-3 guard Jaquon Parker )who might get meaningful minutes right away) or springy guard Sean Kilpatrick, who starred alongside James Southerland (Syracuse) and Johnnie Lacy (Providence) at Notre Dame Prep last year. A lot of firepower. Should be interesting ZS

“whose penchant for dazzling the crowd with emphatic and extravagant dunks added to his internet celebrity” – that doesn’t describe his game at all, have you ever seen him play? Lance does not have great leaping ability; his game is more about power

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 5:12 pm
”dazzling the crowd with emphatic and extravagant dunks”?? the kid definitely has a knack for getting buckets in a paul pierce way but i was really disappointed by his lack of explosiveness.

  • mike Posted: Nov.3 at 6:12 pm
is there an echo in here?

  • zachsmart Posted: Nov.3 at 6:50 pm
I didn’t mean to throw him in a hyperbole but he had man-sized dunks that brought crowds to their feet in multiple games last season, namely when they lost to Jamesville-Dewitt at Baruch College during the Big Apple classic. Don’t see too many kids at the high school level dunking the way he does. Check out the youtube clips..I’d say he’s anything but a Paul Pierce like scorer and his shooting tailed off, significantly, last season. Never mentioned him having great leaping ability, at 6-6 you should be throwing down bangers…But he can finish with the best of them–he tends to do so by choking the rim and I think he proved that on many occasions last season and will continue to do so (if eligible) this season

screw u haters. lance is puttin bk on the map lets go brooklyn we here. he’s gunna dominate this season and be a top 15 draft choice easy.

  • migsthemac Posted: Nov.3 at 11:35 pm
Anyone 6′-6″ can dunk and LS definitely looks like an athlete – but that YouTube clip actually shows that LS isn’t explosive on the level of the big time NBA guys. If you stop the clip at the highest point of his jump, his head is way below the rim and his hand is only about a foot over. Compare that to someone like Blake Griffin, where his head is up by the rim on all of his big slams. Or Dwyane Wade, who in college literally dunked everything when he was anywhere near the basket. Doesn’t mean LS won’t be a good player, but you can see by guys like Beasley that if you’re not a freak-level explosive athlete, you’re not going to be able to translate your success in high school and college without a lot of hard work…

  • migsthemac Posted: Nov.3 at 11:38 pm
Born Ready may have been born to dominate high school, but there is a long list of guys who were the best ever in their cities or states, and didn’t even make it near the NBA because they weren’t willing to put in the work… Hopefully LS will realize this and never take for granted the gifts he’s been given.

BORN READY Lance doesn’t appear to be coming out of high school. He’s physically mature. What we’ve worked on with Lance is trying to decrease his body composition, and get his fat levels down. Lance has really done a tremendous job of buying into the program. Lance’s volume may not have been high, so we’ve really had to work on his repetitions and sustain his energy levels.

  • STRETCH Posted: Nov.4 at 4:26 pm
CINCINNATI (18-14 SU, 11-15 ATS) has a nice inside-outside thing going with scoring guard Deonta Vaughn (15.3 ppg) and bulldog big man Yancy Gates (6’9″, 260 pounds). The newcomers are real important here. 6’6″ Lance Stephenson is a highly-touted recruit out of Brooklyn. Center Ibrahima Thomas, a transfer from Oklahoma State, can be an impact player and will be eligible in mid-December. The Bearcats should be able to get to the NCAA’s.

  • STRETCH Posted: Nov.4 at 4:31 pm
524 Points Deonta Vaughn needs to join Oscar Robertson as the only UC players to score 2,000 in their careers.

    I’LL BE BACK

  • Da Hood Posted: Nov.5 at 1:05 pm
@thalilbigkahuna: Yup, it was a dribble weave and the pg didnt hand it off, so he reached in and tried to rip him and the ball went out of bounds of the pg’s foot. da whole gym was like WTF, did you see that?, i started cracking up, it was crazy.

  • Da Hood Posted: Nov.5 at 1:08 pm
Love his game though watched since a freshmen! He Brooklyn 4real.

  • thalilbigkahuna Posted: Nov.5 at 6:43 pm
Hahaha, that’s so funny. I saw that happen once in an elementary school game, but Lance Stephenson? I hope that I get to see him play sometime this year. And I hope that he rips somebody on Cincinnati.

  • STRETCH Posted: Nov.6 at 12:30 am
