Report: Norm Roberts Out at St. John’s

New York Post’s Lenn Robbins is reporting that current St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts coached his final game with the team last night in a 57-55 loss to Marquette at the Big East Conference Tournament in MSG. From the NY Post: “Multiple highly placed sources — in the athletic department, on the board of trustees and in the booster sector — told The Post that Roberts will not be retained for a seventh season.” Roberts, who went 81-100 in his first six seasons with the program, has been under fire for not winning enough games as well as for not being able to land any of the top New York City recruits such as Sylvan Landesberg, Lance Stephenson and Jayvaughn Pinkston (the last 3 years).

Good guy, decent coach, not able to bring the Johnnies back. I think they need to go for a BIG name if they can scrounge up the money.

It’s OK Norm, you did the best you could… The Johnnies need to hire a coach w/ NYC ties to get the city kids to stay home… Hey (Chris) Mullin, what you doin? Or If Mark Jackson dont get an NBA Job, maybe this is the way to get in…

The team always played hard and the program is in better shape than it was six years ago but, if true, I think it’s time for a change. Bring on Jax!

I don’t think Mark wants to recruit. He is waiting for a good NBA head coaching job (which he 100% deserves and will excel at!).

@Ben O: True… But he keeps getting passed over for NBA jobs possibly due to inexperience… what way to get a job better than groom your former school. I also think he would be a great recruiter… He’s a great PG and what kid wouldnt wanna play for a coach who knows what it takes to get to the L… Just thinkin out loud… What about Rod Strickland? Knows the NY Landscape, another great PG to groom a potential recruit and coached under Cal who knows the “in’s and out’s” Of the NCAA…
