Anthony Davis Chooses Kentucky

by Ryne Nelson

Davis, often considered the No. 1 player in America, joins SF Michael Gilchrist and PG Marquis Teague in what already looks to be yet another landmark class for Coach K CAL (sorry for the typo earlier today) in 2011.

From ESPN:

Chicago Perspective senior forward Anthony Davis has committed to Kentucky.

Davis was an unknown before the spring due to lack of exposure, but burst on the scene after showing off a rare versatility for a player his size while playing with Illinois-based MeanStreets. [...]

Davis was recruited by nearly every top program in the country and decided on the Wildcats over DePaul, Ohio State and Syracuse.

‘Coach [John] Calipari is easy to talk to and he listens to what you are saying,’ Davis told ESPN’s Paul Biancardi. ‘[Calipari] will be a father figure to me away from home. He’s a demanding coach that will not tell me what I want to hear, but what I need to hear to improve.’

Obviously, Coach Cal is bringing in talent at a never seen before clip, at least in the era of high school rankings –three of the top 5 players in the Class of 2011 already will be in Lexington next season.

If freshmen Stacey Poole and Doron Lamb stick around for a sophomore campaign, and SLAM diarist Quincy Miller commits to UK, the ’11-12 Wildcats should be favored to win it all.

Wow, does Coach CAL (not K you overzealous editors) walk around with bags of money or something? He is wayyyy to good of a recruiter for me.

Coach Cal- 2 different schools to final fours, last two ROYs (might be adding a 3rd this year) and Pat-Riley style on the sideline. Who wouldn’t want to go play for a guy like that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Wow, I feel the hate. Get over it, nobody is getting paid to play at Kentucky, they just want to go there because they want Cal to show em how to make it to the NBA. Championships are coming.

  • lupe

@ THE PROMISE – How much for a bag of what your on?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If Davis goes one and done hopefully he can gain at least 20 or 30 pounds or else he will get absolutely abused with that skinny frame of his.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

fact of the matter is Coach Cal can reload with five 5-star recruits every single year but if those styles don’t gel and create Chemistry he’ll still have no banners to show for anything. Its a shame these kids are getting suckered into running to this guy thinking he’s the way into the NBA…not realizing the NBA potential is in THEM not HIM….honestly this is getting a bit much for me…just too many cooks in the kitchen and this trend doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM MONEYMELLZ

@THE REAL BLACK KAMLA..A LOT OF PLAYERS HAVE TALENT..BUT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO TAP INTO THEIR POTENTAL..COACH CAL IS A GOOD RECRITER BECAUSE THE PLAYER KNOWS HE HAS A WAY OF HELPIN GUYS NOTICE THEIR TALENT AND GETS DEM TO PLAY UP TOO IT..

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM MONEYMELLZ

EVEN IF IT MIGHT NOT LEAD TO ANY CHAMPIONSHIPS..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@ Black Rick Kamla – I been saying the same thing man. As fun as it will be to watch these Kentucky teams littered with 5-star recruits and McDonalds AA’s every year, I feel bad for die-hard Kentucky fans. They’re not going to get a NCAA title, I don’t think, if they keep having to reload year after year after year with no continuity.

Black RK does have a point. Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe would be in the league right now if they would have gone to any top 25 school. Cal is not a ticket to the NBA, THEY are their own ticket. But Cal pays, though… Not sure Coach K or Roy can give the hook up

  • JTaylor21

T-Money every coach pays one way or the other. Cal is just the few that have been caught. Don’t let Coach K’s catholic boy looks fool ya, dude being doing back door deals for years. Anyways no doubt that guys that go to Kentucky have NBA potential but how many times have we seen top-nba prospects fizzle out based on the school they go to and how the coach utilizes them. Coach Cal is a master at knowing exactly what kind of style a player excels at and using his talents to fully showcase that he’s more than NBA ready. One of the reasons why DRose and Reke were so good out the gates in the NBA is because Cal’s dribble-drive offense plays to their strengths and hides their weaknesses. If I had to chose a college coach to teach me the game it would be either Cal or Coach K.

@Jtaylor21 deff coach cal..coach k has the betta resume but cal betta prepares his players for the next level

  • http://facebook.com/tronjohnson CHIEF

Honestly this Cal love is way to unmitigated. No championships but always a final four? Dude is trying to create a dynasty reminiscent of the Buffalo Bills.
Slam, Khalid…we love winners here, not to hear about another good player going to play for Calipari only to have his team beat by a better run college organization with players who work hard to be there that year. Freshmen hype is about as worthwhile as telling me the Heat are gonna beat 72 wins and sweep the finals. It’s useless and contrived.
When Coach Cal hoists up a NCAA DIV 1 Final Four Tourney Champ Banner and the trophy I want you to run an article about him so quick. Until then tell him and his media department sit down, shut the #%@! up and do something at the end of march. This whole Coach Cal love for guys you feature in PUNKS is starting ot disgust me.

  • EJ

He should take his skin and bones to South Beach!

  • http://williame888@hotmail.com primp

Calipari can’t coach. He can have all the 5* he wants. He’ll never get a banner cause his coaching skills are sub par.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@primp: If he cant coach, then why does he average 30 wins a year? So many idiots on this site.

  • JoeMaMa

College basketball is a business. And Coach Cal has this going for him: national exposure games, lots of press, a recent history of ROYs and quality players, players that sing his praises, and lots of wins (though not championships). It’s a winning business, even if he doesn’t get the crown. Players recognize that playing for him bumps them up a few spots in the draft, which translates to several hundreds of thousands. Also, he takes time to tell the national media, “this guy is amazing, I told him to leave”…more hype to garner a better spot. Say what you will about his practices, but he works the system to a TEE and puts the nation’s top players in a position for money. That’s just what it is.

  • EJ

Coach Cal is great for players who think College basketball is just a stop on the way to the NBA. He gets his players ready for the NBA, and that’s what’s important for some of the best players in the nation. NCAA championship doesn’t matter that much to them, coach Cal is the best choice for those guys. Like if Kobe and Lebron would be going to college next year, they’d probably choose coach Cal, cause they just wanna get to the L.

  • Hussman25

Kid looks good… but so did Brandon Wright.

    ^the promise..
yeah they just get stupider almost everyday

  • http://www.slamonline.com Mars

For homework, you kids go watch “He Got Game” and “Blue Chips” then re-evaluate how coach Cal gets recruits.
