Video: Controversial Ending at MSG

by Jeremy Bauman / @JBauman13

St. John’s and Rutgers fought down to the final play today in the second round of the Big East Tournament, but the game did not end without controversy at Madison Square Garden.

Rutgers inbounded the basketball underneath their own hoop, threw the ball towards St. John’s three-point line, where St. Johns player Justin Brownlee came up with the ball with around 4.0 seconds on the clock. Upon seeing Coach Steve Lavin walk up the sideline, the forward ran out of bounds with the ball near the scorers table, stepped out of bounds at the 1.6 second mark, and chucked the ball into the stands.

The referees did not review the play and went straight into the locker room immediately following the play.

If the play was reviewed, there is little doubt that Brownlee would have received a technical foul–meaning Rutgers would have had two shots and the ball with 1.6 seconds left. No matter what, they would have had a chance at tying or taking the game into overtime.

These events will probably overshadow an entertaining back-and-forth affair, but it brings a broader question into play: Should these refs be allowed to ref the rest of the Big East Conference Tournament or not?

ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb already said that he believese these referees should be suspended. What do you think?

    Waaw, stuuupid refs.
They’re like it’s done, I made my money!

Tim Higgins and Jim Burr are the worst officials in the entirety of the NCAA. They need to be fired immediately and banned from ever working another NCAA game again.

The game was over, rutgers turned it over, suck it up

Just last week BE officals called a T on a Louisville Cheerleader with 1 second left. All season long they have been reviewing the clock late in tight games. Here they never even made the attempt. Seems like on of the officals should have had the guts to do the right thing!

It’s about time Refs were put under the microscope and be made accountable for horrible judgement calls. Start at the college level, maybe eventually it’ll move up to the Pros…but they need to be suspended. Too many times they change the outcomes of games and walk away unscathed, hiding behind unions.

  • Cbass

Today is Wednesday, yo. This just happened an hour ago.

  • DNz15′s

whoa… technical foul.. had a chance to tie the game with the ball back.. with 1.6 seconds left… that plenty of time to get a good look

    that sucks

  • 2KInsider

He was barely out of bounds.

  • Felix

Out of bounds is out of bounds. 1.6 sec left= time on clock therefore game is NOT OVER. This is sick… those kids have to be hurting over a loss like that…Brownlee lucky refs f’ed this up so bad- historically bad error will now be a historically bad call

  • IhateRefs

Doesn’t matter if he was “barely” out of bounds. Out of bounds is out of bounds moron! Plus throwing the ball into the stands in a “T”. Rutgers should have had free throws and the ball. Worst no call i’ve ever seen. I thought SEC refs were bad.

Where is the video? Am I blind? I can’t see it on the page!

@Cbass Sorry it was today of course but I got the days mixed up!

  • Papa Smurf

Seriously? Your excuse is “He was barely out of bounds”? That’s like me saying that St. John’s barely made their last couple shots. Get that weak a$$ excuse out of here.

you guys hear Hubert Davis defending the refs on this?

  • SoleMinded

    where’s the video?

  • Heals

Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that. Watching live was crazy, my condolences to those with who bet on Rutgers…

That ref cheated like the English in the Ashes mates

  • thalilbigkahuna

They should absolutely be suspended, they neglected their duties as officials. And @ whoever said he was “barely out of bounds”, if both feet means barely, then yes, he was barely out of bounds. With 1.7 seconds left his entire body was out of bounds.

  • Felix

who is the ref? Tim Donaghy w some plastic surgery and a fake id?

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

lol@2kinsider – “barely out of bounds”

  • KB8toSG8

I dunno if that’s a historically bad call or a hysterically bad call……..you guys don’t get it do you?

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

Did you see the video? It wasn’t just that call, the refs missed two more foul calls on rutgers down the stretch.. just wow
