Auburn Guard Involved in Point-Shaving Investigation

Suspended Auburn PG Varez Ward is under investigation by federal authorities in an ongoing point-shaving probe. According to the Yahoo! report, at least two Auburn games are under scrutiny: a February 7 loss to Alabama and a January 25 loss to Arkansas: “Suspended Auburn University point guard Varez Ward is under investigation by federal authorities in an ongoing point-shaving probe, Yahoo! Sports has learned. Three sources with knowledge of the case said the FBI has been investigating Ward since late February after he and guard Chris Denson were suspended by the Tigers prior to a Feb. 25 home game against Arkansas. Two sources said Denson was also questioned as part of the point-shaving investigation, but he was cleared of any wrongdoing and returned to the team after sitting out the loss to the Razorbacks. The sources said additional players have been questioned in the case about whether Ward – who has not been with the team since being suspended – attempted to enlist them in a possible scheme. The sources said at least two games are under scrutiny: a 68-50 loss to Alabama on Feb. 7 and a 56-53 loss to Arkansas on Jan. 25.”

In the ‘you might be interested in’ section it has the ‘lakers get paul, give up gasol and odom’ headline. Oh what could have been. :(

Huh??????? What the hell does that comment gotta do with point shaving??? Annoying!!!!!!!

  • MaxIsNative

Really? Disgrace. Even if it’s false, speculations like this will make any game lose some integrity.

  • tomtom

Jpm34 what does your comment have to do with point shaving?

why is the FBI investigating this? Isn’t it kind of the NCAA’s jurisdiction? Is there some part of a no-name point guard missing jumpers on purpose that merits federal attention?

  • Shaver

They might want to check the Vandy game Aub lost in January, it was the worst game a college team has ever played. 34 turnovers and 35 points, send em to jail.

Not saying this is ok if it’s true, but college players should be paid then maybe this stuff won’t happen.

@rocksinmypants. They get paid in the form of a scholarship

The reason the FBI is involed is because point shaving usually involves gambling fraud

i read the article and i still dont understand what point shaving is, can someone explain for me?

  • kh

I was always curious how one shaves points in a 20 point blow out? By 3 now that’s a bit more believable.

@rocks, so first of all, we should start paying college athletes more $ because they’re getting into trouble? By that logic everytime someone commits a crime we should just change the law… legalize pot, legalize theft because that would decrease the overpopulated prisons! college students ARE paid! They’re getting a free education that would cost somebody, who is not under an athletic scholarship, thousands of dollars. But that’s not enough? How about free room and food? How about free nikes to play ball in? How about tutors that travel with the team to help out with their academics? Still not enough? They’re STUDENT athletes! Basketball, and any sport for that matter, should not be about the money. Damn, people don’t seem to put any value on a college education. If you want to get paid, then go pro… simple as that!

Point shaving is when you reduce the or increase the margin of victory in order to cause the game to make or not make the spread.
The spread is the gambling line that estimates how much a game should be won by. Gamblers bet on the over/under of that spread, which is whether the game will go over or under the estimated margin of victory.
Point shavers try to impact the result so that certain gamblers can make large sums of money.

Longhorns dodged a bullet on this one.

KH per Allenp’s post, it all depends on the spread. Point shaving focuses on margin of victory, not just who wins or loses.
