UNLV Freshman Anthony Bennett Still Not Cleared by NCAA

UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett is still not eligible to play for the Runnin’ Rebels this season. On the surface the situation seems normal, as the NCAA usually take its time before clearing student-athletes like Bennett, who have attended multiple high schools, let alone in different countries. SportingNews.com has the details: “Coach Dave Rice says it likely will be another month before he learns if top-10 recruit Anthony Bennett gains his NCAA eligibility and is allowed to play for the Runnin’ Rebels this season. Bennett, a 6-8 power forward from Ontario, attended multiple high schools in Canada and the U.S. and thus is undergoing further scrutiny by the NCAA. It’s not a surprise, but it is a process. ‘All potential student-athletes who have gone to multiple high schools require additional review,’ Rice told reporters this week. ‘Anthony has been admitted to UNLV. We are submitting all the documents that the NCAA Eligibility Center needs to certify him. It’s not unusual. But we’re very optimistic that he’ll be here in late August.’ The delay in NCAA certification for Bennett likely will cost him the opportunity of playing alongside his future teammates in August. The Rebels have a summer exhibition trip planned for Canada on Aug. 16-22, and it was Rice’s hope that he’d have Bennett on the court for the 10 full-scale practices leading up to the tour plus the games. That seems unlikely now.”
