SLAM Fresh 25 – 2012

Hi, my name is…

by Rodger Bohn / @rodgerbohn

At the halfway point of their high school careers, we’ve caught enough of the top players in the class to throw together a respectable ranking of 25 cats. Obviously a whole lot can change over the next two years, so there will be a number of names that will be popping up between now and their senior prom. What makes this group especially unique is the lack of elite level point guards so far. Someone’s going to have to bring the rock up the floor, right?

Rank Name Height Position School Why?
1 Andre Drummond 6-11 C St. Thomas More (CT) Athletic big man has a surprising skill set.
2 DaJuan Coleman 6-9 PF/C Jamesville-DeWitt (NY) Monster in the paint has a touch of Jared Sullinger in him.
3 JP Tokoto 6-6 SF Menomonee Fallas (WI) Amazing combination of potential and production.
4 Isaiah Austin 7-0 PF/C Grace Prep (TX) Skinny 7-footer owns ridiculous perimeter skills.
5 Shabazz Muhammad 6-5 SG Bishop Gorman (NV) Lefty wing can score in variety of ways, inside and out.
6 LJ Rose 6-3 PG Second Baptist School (TX) Great size and basketball IQ for a young playmaker.
7 Brandon Ashley 6-9 PF Bishop O’Dowd (CA) Long, athletic forward with scary potential.
8 Justin Anderson 6-5 SG Montrose Christian (MD) Physical guard who can not only shoot the 3, but jump out of the gym.
9 Perry Ellis 6-8 PF/SF Wichita Heights (KS) Polished forward can score inside and out.
10 Amile Jefferson 6-7 SF/PF Friends Central (PA) Lanky forward has a very polished game.
11 Winston Shepard 6-7 SF Findlay Prep (NV) Big-time athlete who is already a full-time wing.
12 Khem Birch 6-9 PF Notre Dame Prep (MA) Athletic dynamo is one of better defenders in class.
13 Jarnell Stokes 6-8 PF Memphis Central (TN) Big bodied forward is an animal in the three second lane.
14 J-Mychal Reese 6-1 PG Bryan (TX) Heralded as an elementary schooler, he has continued to advance his game.
15 Peter Jurkin 7-1 C United Faith Christian Academy (NC) Game changing defender with improving offensive skill set.
16 Jordan Price 6-5 SG McCallie School (TN) Powerful wing owns a diverse scoring attack
17 Alex Murphy 6-8 SG/SF St. Mark’s (MA) Florida frosh Erik’s little bro is a bigtime shooter and has serious game.
18 Rosco Allen 6-7 SF Bishop Gorman (NV) Long small forward has some serious upside.
19 Tony Parker 6-9 PF/C Miller Grove (GA) Mammoth big man is a load in paint, but can also step out.
20 Ricardo Ledo 6-5 SG St. Andrew’s (RI) Explosive wing with great physical tools.
21 Wannah Bail 6-8 SF/PF Trent Internationale Lefty combo forward with prototypical natural gifts.
22 Omar Calhoun 6-3 SG Christ The King (NY) Scoring machine will put points on the board in a variety of ways.
23 Jordan Tebbutt 6-5 SG Horizon Christian (OR) Powerful slasher with the body of a grown man.

YOOOOOO, is JP Tokoto transferring to Quality Education in Winston-Salem, NC for sure?

It’s possible some of this info got mixed up. For example, Amile Jefferson’s profile sounds like Wayne Blackshear’s.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Lucas Shapiro

Love all the New Englanders on the list. Drummond, Murphy, Birch, Ledo, all have GREAT potential. Drummond is so much like Amar’e/Dwight it’s scary.

  • Ryan

    Wheres Gabe York at??

  • http://slamonline.com Rodger Bohn

@Phil/Justin- JP is def not going to quality education. There were a few guys whose high schools didn’t update. Thanks for the heads up. They’re all good now.

  • justin

@Rodger – Thanks man. That is probably a good thing, there is a lot of contradiction in the school’s very name. Just saying.

  • Joe

No Indiana guys on the list? Where would you put guys like Harris, Hollowell, Hammons, Smith-Rivera? Top 50?

  • Go To Tournaments

If Tokoto could ever hit a three, let alone a mid-range, he’d be dangerous. Virtually everybody on this list faces 17U competition and he’s busy slashing against the far weaker 16U group.

L.J. Rose, who is now injured, and Reese have been busy losing all spring for Houston Hoops. They couldn’t even lead the team to a top twenty finish out of a possible 42 team Nike EYBL tournament.

  • Jim

DID YOU SEE ANY OF THE EYBL? THE MOST DOMINATING TEAM AT 13-1 (PLAYAZ BASKETBALL CLUB)HAS A 6’8 POINT GUARD FROM 2012 HE PLAYS ALL 5 POSITION AND IS DOMINATING THE LEAGUE…HOW IS HE NOT ON YOUR LIST. KYLE ANDERSON AKA “SLO MO”! CHECK YOUR RECORDS!

  • Jim

Ask around about what Kyle Anderson 2012 6’8 Pt guard did to Quincy Miller out in LA!

  • http://www.twitter.com/rodgerbohn Rodger Bohn

@Jim- Kyle was RIGHT outside the list. I had him in there initially. I saw the Playaz at two tourneys this spring though and he didn’t do too well.

@Go To Tournaments- JP played 17′s last year as a 15 year old…and still has played some 17′s this year. I saw him play 17′s myself. I haven’t seen a wing dominate the way that he has so far, let alone possess that upside. As for LJ and Reese, how often do you see two young guys carry their teams on EYBL? None of the guys on that list did.

@Joe- All those guys will def be top 50. Harris, Hollowell, and Hammons were all close on making top 25.

  • Jim

@Roger, what two tournaments did Kyle not play well at? MVP of Spr Fling, games of 25, 22, 20,19, and 15 at Boo’s, Houston played well (check out the utube highlights), King of NY 22 in CHIP, LA played well with games of 21 and 13 against Q Miller and a 14 and 19reb game that they lost, maybe Pitt. I respect your opinion.

  • foots42

He is invited to 17U USA Trails, NBA Camp, Doron Williams and Lebron James Camp is a 6’8 point and his team is the prolly #1 in the country and is considered their most valuable player…do all those other guys have that resume? LOL.

  • foots42

@Roger, just go to utube hit Kyle Anderson Jr, not flashy or athletic just crafty and a winner.

  • http://@rogerbohn james

kyle had a underacheiving high school season.as far as a highlight tape is exactly what it is, a highlight tape u know any body can look good on one of those LOL.dont hate on other kids that is deserving

  • foots42

@James, underachieving? Averaged 10.5 pts, 6.3 reb and 4.1 assist on a team that was 28-1 and had 5 seniors and a jr in their 7 man rotation 4 of which are major D1 recruits. I’m not hating on anyone on the list even though I have seen most of them. It’s all an opinion…time will tell who is better!

  • foots42

Also James, you can’t make up highlights…they are of what you did not what you talk about doing! LOL

  • mike

Saw Drummond up at Amherst College with CBC and he did not impress – lack of hustle, no back to the basket game, content to jaw with lesser players instead of backing up his talk, form is too low, during warmups he chose to shoot only 3 pointers instead of working close to the hoop or in the mid-range, very athletic but he lacks fundamentals from what i could see on this day, did not look deserving of such a lofty ranking and i was kind of disappointed leaving the gym

    WHERE IS GABE YORK………………..

  • OCLakerFan7

We need more Cali players on this list….I agree, Where’s Gabe York, also Where’s Xavier Johnson….can’t wait for Jan. 7th when Xavier’s Mater Dei team, plays Gabe York’s Orange Lutheran Team. Mater Dei has another impressive squad with Freshmen, Stanley Johnson and Shaqquan Aaron and Xavier Johnson and Orange Lutheran is lead by Gabe York, NAU signee James Douglas and Super Sophmore Payton Banks, who was just offered by USC….Should be some great games. MD has owned O-Lu the last 2 years, but the next 2 years should be a lot closer.
