Breaking News: Austin Rivers Commits to Duke

Rivers set to run through Duke.

By Antonio Curro – Midwest PUNKS Editor

The #1 2011 prospect in the country is off the board after a whirlwind recruitment as Austin Rivers of Winter Park H.S. in Florida verbally committed to Duke this morning.  Long regarded as one of the premiere talents in the country, Rivers chose the Blue Devils with a number of official visits including one to rival North Carolina scheduled for October.

This is obviously a huge recruiting grab for Coach K and the Blue Devils as Rivers is regarded by some as the #1 player in the country and is a consensus top 5 prospect nationally on virtually every other board.  At 6-4 Rivers has excellent size and as the son of former NBA star and current Boston Celtics head coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers the Winter Park standout has an exceptional pedigree for the hardwood.  While the foundation is easy to see, the younger Rivers is exceptionally skilled with a lethal scoring package that includes handles, range, scoring off the bounce, dribble penetration skills, and an ability to take over the game and score in bunches.  Add to the mix a fierce competitive fire, exceptional court awareness, nice vision, and the ability to be high major impact talent at either the PG or SG spots at the high major level, and it’s easy to see how Rivers is an big time catch for the Blue Devils.

Austin Rivers played with the Each 1 Teach 1 (i.e. also referred to by some as Team STAT) during the grassroots travel season.

    DAMN Duke you scary!!

  • VisionofGreatness

There will be no more great college teams besides Duke. UNC just gets one and done guys like Harrison Barnes. Kentucky is the same way. With the one and done players that we have now, we will just get to enjoy them for one season. Teams don’t stay together and create legacies. The last team that we had to do that was the UNC team that won in 2009. The NBA should scrap that dumb rule.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Coney….this is generally true, with a few obvious excpetions, but it didn’t really matter where this kid decided to spend a year, he’ll be a good pro

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

He will become worse duke never makes good pros

  • kd35

unc hardly gets one and done, just because barnes is considered to be a one and done doesnt mean he will be, i mean wtf are u talking about man?

@The Seed Curry >>>> Rivers…and we will see

  • Chris C.

Hate Hate Hate..haha Go Duke!..I see back to back to back ships coming to durham

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Seth Curry will be the National POY next year as Duke repeats, and he will be a high lottery, possibly #1, draft pick in the 2011 draft…..UNC will be a little bit better, but still will suffer for the lack of a decently skilled inside presence.

  • Will

    @The Black Rick Kamla.

No way he will be the top pick. Harrison Barnes and perry Jones are gonna go 1 and 2. Book it. He will not be national player of the year or even the best player for Duke. Kyrie Irving. BOOK IT!

  • nastierthanu4

Honestly F Duke!!! F Austin Rivers!!! F kenny blakeney F steve wojowhatever F Jeff Capel

  • Will

F Duke but Austin Rivers is the man. So is Kyrie and Seth. F the rest of em’

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Will Kyrie is an incredible young guard, kinda gives me a feel of a bigger Chris Paul, but you’d be crazy to think that a freshman guard is gonna get starting time under Coach K, especially with guys like Nolan Smith and Seth Curry ahead of him. Barnes is good….not #1 pick good, Perry Jones is good, not #1 pick good, Seth Curry IS

  • BK Chris

I’m not a duke fan but saying he’ll be a bad pro because he’s going to Duke is stupid. The kids dad is 1 of the best coaches in the game today! Doc probably has been training him at a pro level since birth!

  • Asad

@The Black Rick Kamla man you’re crazy. I’m probably one of the biggest duke fans but there is no way seth curry is going to be national player of the year. Right now, if anyone on the duke squad, it’ll be Singler who’ll probably be voted to be the POY. And in draft terms, I don’t even think Curry is going into the draft next year and even if he did, he wouldn’t be picked ahead of Irving. Also you must be smoking something if you think Barnes is #1 pick good. As much as i dread to say it, this guy is a hoss. Same thing with Jones. Projected Duke starting lineup: Irving, Smith, Singler, 2 plumless and Curry will be 6th man. Get real man. Get real.

  • Asad

    *isn’t #1 pick good

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

well @Asad you know that Coach K doesn’t give freshman starting burn if you’re a true Duke fan. Also if you’re a Duke fan you would have heard about how badly Seth, on the practice squad, was lighting up his teamates during practice and how badly Coach K has been itching to play him. And as far as the comments about the draft picks, these are just my predictions. Of course, in the growing trend of teams drafting touted yet unproven freshmen, its more than highly possible that Barnes and Jones can go some combination of #1 and #2, MY prediction (i.e. my own opinion) is that Seth Curry will sky rocket up the draft boards and no team in the lottery will want to miss out on him as they did with his brother….just my prediction.

  • JTaylor21

Barnes is the guaranteed #1 pick; dude is just that good, while Jones might go #2 because dude is a taller T-Mac on crack. Also duke will crush UNC for the next 2 years because they are too deep, too good, and have the BETTER coach.

  • JoeMaMa

Duke is a prissy private university whose team is as flaky as the guys like ‘Montgomery’, ‘Blair’ and ‘Rupert’ who enjoy watching them. I don’t like Duke, and never will. They’re an upper crust fancy boy university, and whenever the team wins I become convinced that the universe is a cold, cruel place. But…congrats to Austin. Mike Shi-chef-ski can coach and he’ll do well there.

Im about to make a corned- beef sandwich..! Oh, crap, this is slamonline, not facebook… oops, I got mixed-up, I think I just told facebook that I loved watching Gay-Love @the worlds, over the summer… Oops..

  • Kgomotso Nkhumise

Dukies don’t make good pros my @ss, so what you saying about Coach K’s coaching abilities. It is all about the fire that is burning inside each player and what they want out of Duke and Coach K. Austin is definitely gonna be a beast in college, move on to the NBA with Coach K’s teachings and kill it. So I say good choice Jr.

Austin Rivers just became soooo LAME for goin to Duke…you may when a title but you will never be a great pro….Duke sucks…they turn you into a system guy and you become unable to become a great indiviual player….he should of went somewhere else…Lame decision Austin smh…

  • http://slamonline.com Art Mo

Austin Rivers you just became sooooo “LAME”…Duke out of all places…they never produce good pros…they just goin make him cut his hair and become system player who just shoots 3s…that was not a good decision…everybody in the league from Duke is either a bust or a specialist…nobody from Duke becomes an allstar…smh…im so dissappointed in you this evening austin

  • twinparadox

I feel that the hate aura is almost as the time LeBron chose Miami…
Just let time tell how good he’ll be guys…it’s not for another year before this guy gets to be a effin blue devil…
As much as I hate the blue devils, they have been stocking up some serious talent these days…smh

  • UNC fan

@ Black Rick seriously though, why are you so high on Curry, because he is supposedly lighting up practice? Just curious. I saw him and Kyrie play at the NC Pro-Am and Kyrie was the one that really impressed, not Curry. What kind of numbers do you think Curry is going to put up, to win POY? And about Coach K giving freshman starting burn, Jason Williams started every game his freshman year, Redick started most of his freshman year, hell even Paulus started 30 games his freshman year. I personally think Kyrie is good enough to start.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@UNC fan, performances in Pro-Am scrimmages and in actual games shouldn’t be compared (though Seth played really well himself). But I’m so high on Seth because I feel he possesses all the strengths of his brother, i.e. deep and mid range shooting as well as court awareness, except he’s more of a pure scorer. Slightly bigger than his brother just by looking at the two, perhaps stronger also, a more confident ball-handler and he can attack the rim with the best in the nation. Your right about Paulus and Williams, just thinking now….thing is I think Coach K will have to establish some order of seniority with such a crowded backcourt and just from everything I saw of a freshman Seth Curry at Liberty, I think he seizes his moment….course I could be wrong

  • $am

It’s just an oral commitment. I don’t think he’ll suit up for Duke.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

    @$am lol wishful thinking huh?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Elton Brand and Grant Hill were pretty good at one point before the injuries.

  • http://slamonline.com bash

^^there are exceptions to every rule, but besides those two, Magette, Boozer, maybe Redick, Duke doesn’t produce good NBA talent. Coach K is too system oriented and dare I say arrogant to let talented players do their thing. Their players are good for taking charges and getting dunked on.

  • http://slamonline.com bash

The only way to break the Coach K/Duke curse is to leave early, preferably after your freshman year, 2 years at the most. Other wise, you come in playing like Sean Dockery, a talented, athletic Chicago-style point guard and leave out playing like… ojo. It happened to Dunleavy, Duhon, and countless others, and it can happen to you.

duke just pressed the reload button again. it’s becoming way better to be a fan

  • lupe

Anyone who doesn’t see the lack of player development (and that’s putting it nicely) at dook can’t see the trees for the forest. Rivers drank the kool-aid, but a lot of kids do – then they get to see one of the ugly cities, campuses, and co-eds in the nation and many transfer. Oh well, as a UNC fan it’s always a thrill to watch the K-rat teams and players flame out. Here we go again…

  • fitzy

^^ yeah and UNC losing in the NIT while Duke cuts down the curtains is always a thrill for us Dukies too

  • cnilla

Boozer, Brand and Hill were all very good pros. Laetner had a few all star seasons with the Hawks. Reddick has been playing well with the Magic. Corey, Battier and Dunleavey have been solid pros as well. We’ll never know how good J Will and Hurley could’ve been as both careers were stopped short b/c of motor vehicle related injuries. Yea, you have your trajon’s and will avery’s but what school doesn’t have their fair share of busts?
