SLAM Fresh 25 – 2013

Hi, my name is…

by Rodger Bohn / @rodgerbohn

The Class of 2012 is stacked with bigs, yet no elite point guards. The Class of 2011 is loaded with 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s, yet no true big men. The Class of 2013 has the potential to offer the best of both worlds, combining playmakers, scoring combo guards, and a few big men that have the chance to be really special. Remember, these cats still have three years of high school hoops left for their games to grow.  Regardless, here’s a look at 25 youngsters that have already stood out among the pack.

Rank Name Height Position School Why?
1 Julius Randle 6-8 PF Prestonwood (TX) Inside-out forward with a man’s body.
2 Kuran Iverson 6-8 SF Northwest Catholic (CT) True wing who has scary upside.
3 Rodney Purvis 6-3 PG/SG Upper Room (NC) Combo guard with outstanding ability to slash to the cup.
4 Chris Thomas 6-5 SG Princeton Day Academy (MD) Freak athlete with a versatile offensive game.
5 Andrew Harrison 6-5 PG Fort Bend Travis (TX) Big, physical guard who can really put points on the board.
6 Nerlens Noel 6-10 C Tilton School (NH) Easily the best defender in the class, perhaps the best of anyone in high school.
7 Thomas Hamilton Jr 6-9 PF/C Whitney Young (IL) Thomas Hamilton’s son can shoot it from beyond the arc and may be as tall as his Pops.
8 Austin Colbert 6-9 PF St. Patrick’s (NJ) Lanky, athletic power forward who can score facing the basket.
9 Keith Frazier 6-4 SG Irving (TX) Skinny two guard has an unstoppable pull-up J.
10 Aaron Harrison 6-4 SG Fort Bend Travis (TX) Tough scoring guard with good size, strength, and vision.
11 Jabari Parker 6-6 SF Simeon (HS) Do it all forward played all five positions for his HS team last season.
12 Aaron Gordon 6-7 PF/SF Archbishop Mitty (CA) Physically mature sophomore is an explosive athlete with improving perimeter skills.
13 Johnathan Williams 6-8 SF Southwind (TN) Bigtime lefty is already adept at playing on the perimeter full time and can be a nightmare to defend.
14 Peter Jok 6-5 SF/SG Roosevelt (IA) Lanky wing with a very polished offensive game.
15 Malik Price-Martin 6-8 SF/PF Monsignor Pace (FL) Face-up forward with great length and versatility.
16 Tyree Robinson 6-4 SG/PG Lincoln (CA) Explosive combo guard who can really finish with contact.
17 Nigel Williams-Goss 6-4 PG Findlay Prep (NV) Big point guard with a very high skill level.
18 Ishmael Wainwright 6-6 SF Raytown South (MO) Versatile forward with a great motor who can kill you both inside and out.
19 Alex Foster 6-8 PF De La Salle (IL) Athletic, lefty power forward is third Chicago player in Fresh 25.
20 Matt Jones 6-4 SG DeSoto (TX) Lights out shooter with extremely deceptive athleticism.
21 Isaiah Hicks 6-8 PF Body of Christ (NC) Big time athlete who can runs the floor like a gazelle.
22 Deonte Burton 6-5 SF Brewster Academy (NH) Milwaukee lefty is a power wing who can explode with the best of them.

24 Stevie Clarke 5-9 PG Douglass (OK) Diminutive scoring guard led his squad to a 4A state title as a freshman.
25 Mike Tobey 6-11 C Hotchkiss School (CT) Mobile big man has outstanding touch around the hoop and can stroke the mid-range jumper.

I’m keeping my eye on Jabari Parker, and really hoping the kid signs with either Illinois or DePaul.

  • http://Myspace.com Shanoooooo

Texas hoops is constantly on the uprise as shown in this top 25.

  • lupe

@ Shanoooooo – well that’s good, considering it is the largest of all 50 states. That’s awesome.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@lupe – Largest of all 50 states? Hold up, now. I grew up near Chicago but I live in Alaska now, so all’s I gotta say is http://www.yachtalaska.com/photos/maps/ASA_usa_alaska.jpg

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

OK lupe, before you accuse someone else of stupidity you need to check yourself. Texas is not the largest of all 50 states, it has 268,820 square miles compared to Alaska’s 586,000 square miles. Texas isn’t the most populated either, it’s California. Food for thought, you do the dishes.

big ups to Nigel Goss for continuing to rep Oregon basketball. People dont think of Oregon as a major basketball state but in recent years we have been cranking out future stars.

  • TXLA

Yea, the TX list is a little off. There are several players omitted. Known and unknown.

Randle is very good for sure, but how impressive is an elite PF playing in 15U? Not to mention he plays for a private school, which private schools are not where the best basketball in TX is played. I’d like to see him and his team get away from that weak a$$ schedule and play in some Dallas public school tournaments. And in AAU play against Dallas Mustangs/Team Texas/Dallas Showtyme etc.

This is not the East Coast, the best ball is played in 4a, and 5a public school in TX.

Check Derron Williams, LaMarcus Aldridge, Chris Bosh, TJ Ford, Darrell Arthur, Daniel Ewing, CJ Miles, Kendrick Perkins etc. all 4a/5a public players.

Everyone plays up, Frazier gets 20+ while running with the Houston Hoops 17s. It was a down summer for them, but they won’t stay down long.

Matt Jones is good, d1 good, but not top 20 in the USA good. There are several others in TX that will give him work.

And for the Harrison twins, they are both 6’5. While Aaron, Not Andrew is playing the point more, I like him more as a scoring guard. His brother Andrew, plays the 2 more, not the point.

    no Isaac Hamilton?

  • lupe

@ Enigmatic – DAMN I wish fishing was that easy, you gotta stay away from the bait junior! Alaska has PRODUCED exactly ONE big-time basketball player, so I just kinda assume nothing is ever coming out of Alaska or Hawai’i as far as ballers go. Largest of the lower 48 states, often referred to as the “continental United States”, is Texas. So out of all the relevant states when it comes to basketball, yes Texas is the largest. My apologies for not making that clear and please accept my apology for assuming you would know what I meant. Don’t live life on the surface son, its way too shallow…

  • kd35

Kuran Iverson is 17 so how is he ranked 2 amoung a bunch of supposedly 16 year old kids, and where is dj fenner?
Im seeing a trend of lots of kids being a year old for there grade, more and more every year, where would iverson be if he was a junior or even a young senior?

I believe there is a point guard out there in 2013 that truly has the goods…Daryl Davender 5’9 quick as light! Handles tight and can score at will…avg.16.5 and 5.6 asst. has the ablility to take over games. Keep your eyes on “Puppy” at Body of Christ Christian Academy playing along side Mr. Hicks…

Don’t forget about the kid in Baltimore, MD
Aquille Carr!!! I think I know talent and I have
seen some of the best players in the world when
they were in High School. The Kid can Play!!!!
Check the AAU circuit Bmore Elite or youtube. See for yourself. Plus he plays in Baltimore so the
    talent level is very good.

  • fifty

check out some more Indy ballers in Devin Davis Jr.,Zac Irvin,Collin Hartman in the class of 2013

  • CMoola

Bronson Koenig of Aquinas High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, should be on here. He just led the Aquinas Blugolds to the state title in D3 of Wisconsin. He has offers from North Carolina, Wisconsin, Marquette and Virginia, among others. He is the best pure point guard in the state hands down and has just as much potential as fellow Wisconsinite, Class of 2012 swingman JP Tokoto. They both play for Wisconsin Playground Warriors during the AAU season so you can probably catch them together this summer.

  • joe will

to CMoola, just want to give u a heads up, lacrose is a division 3 school, way less competition than these kids who are playing FOR d1 schools. watched him play this past summer, hes very over rated. not one of the top players in the country, thats a fact.

  • jrock

yea i agree with cmoola, idk what coach roy williams is on but to offer a sophomore that plays division 3 basketball in high skool a full ride to unc is nuts. hes good but not that good
