SLAM Fresh 75 – 2011

Quincy Miller looks like the best player in an incredible class.

by Rodger Bohn / @rodgerbohn

Ok, so we spent virtually our entire summer sitting in hot gyms watching the nation’s finest in AAU action. Sometimes the player that you went to see decided to switch teams at the last second. Many times, games were running behind schedule and messed up your plans to see certain cats throughout the day. Almost always, the rosters were either erroneous or not available and you found yourself nudging the dude beside you to find out who a certain player was. All in all, it was just another summer on the circuit. Still, many players rose above the chaos to show their skills. Here are the top 75 guys that we checked out.

Quincy definitely ain’t a KD clone yet, not as athletic as KD and definitely doesn’t get his jumper off as fast as KD. But the handles on this 6’9″ are spectacular. AR is still #1 in the country as far as I’m concerned. Rakeem and AD should probably be ranked a tad higher as well.

  • http://slamonline. The Black Rick Kamla

Myck Kabongo is that dude, best PG in the nation….oh my bad he’s from Canada lol, dude is nice with his. Picture Steve Nash passing with Rafer Alston handles, Texas should be a beast in the upcoming

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

I still think Gilchrist is best player in class, but so many of these kids are great players. All in all, nice job by Rodger. Look forward to your junior and soph rankings as well.

  • JTaylor21

I’m have to go with LeBryan Nash, with a name like that everyone else comes in second.

  • http://slamonline. The Black Rick Kamla

which draft class is better 2011 or 2010?? I think 2010 was definitely more PG heavy but this class has more overall talent

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

YAY, looks like another wave of one-and-dones are headed towards Lexington yet again. How does Calipari ever expect to win a title when he trots out an almost all freshman starting 5 every year, regardless of how talented they are?

  • for da luv of da game

    y ben mclemore twice???

  • Ryan

Q Miller is not the best in the class. Gilchrist is the best allaround player. I think Rivers is second till he learns how to pass then its the UK recruits except Wiltjer. Lebryan nash is right after those 3. Nash is a beast.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@fordaluvofdagame WHOOPS. we’ll get on that.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

Who is the next great big man?

  • Wilson

    @doyouwantmore Greg Oden…

  • http://www.twitter.com/rodgerbohn Rodger Bohn

@doyouwantmore- There really isn’t a great true center in this class, although there are a number of guys with tons of potential!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@doyouwantmore…well no ‘big men’ to really speak of…we all know that is a dying breed. Johnny O’Bryant is a guy with good size, extremely physical, plays hard, rebounds and has some offensive polish to boot. From what I have seen he’ll be a future NBA big

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Ben McLemore mix-up fixed. Thanks again to Rodger for the hard work, and to the commenters for sharing their opinions…remember, whether it’s here, another site or magazine, or in your head, these are all JUST opinions.

man for real. quincy miller is not the best player for 2011 ! i mean, hes just to skinny to survive under the basket in the ncaa and to slow to be an effective guard or small forward. and his ego is to big i think. austin rivers should be #1 because theres nothing he can´t do on the court. sick handles, great shot, quick as hell ,the size and the ability to get to the rim whenevere he wants

  • andy

can’t help but notice there’s hardly any centers…could this be the death of the traditional post player?

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Co-sign Ben; I’m a big Gilchrist fan and I think he has the motor and talent to be the best player in his draft class at the very least.

  • tom

i think myck kabongo is the best pg in the long run. yea he lacks being so athletic but look at john stockton steve nash how great they wore he can run a half court set and hes a blur in the open floor and can shot it

  • http://google c_cantrell

not likin that theres not any real centers in here.. its a dying breed man.. i love watchin dominating centers do their thing

  • Ronson

    Dez Wells 6-4 SF?

  • JTaylor21

C_Cantrell is right. There’s nothing like watching a great center just downright control and dominate a game. It pains me to see that kids don’t even want to be a center and think that’s it is uncool. If I had to opportunity to be 6-11 or taller, I would be working on post moves instead of shooting jumpshots all day. Shoutouts to DCousins; the last of a dying breed.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@doyouwantmore: Andre Drummond. Not in this class, but look him up. He’s coming.

  • The truth

Everyone is sleeping on Nick Johnson he’s the only player I know that players hard on defense and offense he has brung back the lost are of the mid range jumper at that he has solidfied him self as an all-around player unlike most of these other kids

Hmmm hello Roger, maybe instead of watching a bunch of high schoolers playin ball you could maybe get all the fellas over and get a new SLAM mag made. Its been 2 month since ish 141. gettin sick of seein kobe’s face on top of my pile. WTF. (Kicks don’t count)

  • http://slamonline.com Rodger Bohn

@Ronson- Yeah, Wells is more of a power wing. He plays point guard at times, but is best suited at the small forward position right now because of his outstanding ability to get to the cup and lack of a consistent outside J.

  • http://google c_cantrell

man speaking of cousins i cant wait to see dude do his thing in the nba

  • http://gregoden.com roybot

These days, noone cares about a big man’s post moves or defense, all they want from that big man is a smooth shooting stroke and handles. Its not his fault, but KD may have triggered the end of traditional basketball.
