SLAM Fresh 50 – 2012

It’s a big man’s world.

by Franklyn Calle / @FrankieC7

Just by glancing at this list, it’s quite noticeable how loaded with big men this class really is. More impressively, many of them can also play out on the perimeter with the ball. Versatility is the key with this class. With the early exit of Andre Drummond to UConn, SLAM‘s High School Diarist Shabazz Muhammad is now the undisputed top player of the bunch.

This summer saw some names climb their way up the charts with guys like Mitch McGary and Kyle Anderson having spectacular offseasons and showing that they’ve upgraded to among the elite. McGary, who arrived on the national scene just earlier this year, had some great outings—demonstrating that aside from bullying in the paint and being able to finish on anyone, he can also create for himself from the perimeter. Anderson has now convinced the whole world that despite being listed as a forward, he might be a point guard at heart. The uncommitted senior can bring the ball up the floor, make plays and get others involved like no one his size can. But let’s not forget about the high number of talented 2-guards in this group.

All in all, when you’re talking about the Class of 2012, the new school of big men has arrived!

Meet the nation’s top-50 seniors.

Saw Archie and Shaq Goodwin, along with Kyle Anderson at the Franchise Classic. All three have serious, serious game. Archie is the second coming of John Wall (in terms of style of play)…. hyped for this class

A nice class overall. Was really impressed with Yogi Ferrell, Amile Jefferson & Ricardo Gathers at adidas nations. Steven Adams of New Zealand dominated the 4 games he played in there. Justin Anderson was beasting at elite 24 in Venice. Shabazz did his thing too and I was bummed we didn’t get a chance to watch McGary. He shattered a glass backboard in warmups and was held out of the game thanks to a gash on his shoulder.

Ran against DeJuan Coleman his sophomore year, dude has serious potential to tear it up down low. I’ve heard though that he’s really slacked off this summer and isn’t looking as impressive though

Muhammad is gonna be scary good.
I really like Kyle Anderson too, I think he can play the point and be a big point guard in the Penny Hardaway/ Shaun Livingston mold.
This class is super-weak in Illinois, the top ranked Illinois high school player this year is Steve Taylor of Simeon, going to Marquette.
And he’s probably top 100 nationally, but not top 50.
