SLAM Fresh 75 – 2012

And this year’s valedictorian is…

by Franklyn Calle / @FrankieC7

After ranking the top players in the Class of 2012 for past three years—and watching their games evolve—the time has come for them to graduate and move onto the next level.

The valedictorian of this class is without any doubt, our high school diarist, Shabazz Muhammad. The 6-6 UCLA-bound forward proved why he is the best prospect in the class during the post-season all-star games, taking home MVP honors at McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic game. He also set an all-time scoring record at the Nike Hoop Summit with 35 points. In fact, he was also the game’s leading scorer at the McDonald’s game and led his team in scoring at the Jordan Brand Classic. I’m sure there are many who would argue for Nerlens Noel being the top player in the class, but it’s hard to dethrone Muhammad with the type of performances he had at the all-star games.

Following our January rankings, Steven Adams from New Zealand finally made his American high school debut and showed that he isn’t just all hype (and even included a 23-point and 10-rebound outing against Nerlens Noel early on). Thus, Adams now has emerged as a top-5 prospect. Another player who rose all the way up the charts is Glenn Robinson III, who began the season ranked in the 40s back in September but now finishes ranked among the top-17 in the nation.

As much fun and entertaining that ranking these players may be, at the end of the day, these unofficial numbers don’t mean much by the time the players get to campus in the fall. From that point forward, it will all be about outworking and adjusting to their competition as well as expectations. Congrats to all the players who made the list and even those who aren’t ranked but persevered to garner the attention of colleges at any level.

Every year, SLAMonline ranks the top-75 seniors at the end of the season. But this year, for the first time ever, as a bonus, we have gone all the way up to 100—giving us the opportunity to show more players some love!

Check out the full rankings below and let us know what you think.

Looks like UCLA has the best freshmen class this year. They have 4 incoming freshmen ranked in the top 50.

Hard core rumors that Nerlens Noel may be headed to Canada for a year or two, as his eligibility is coming into question. No surprise here, just another Cal recruit who is not eligible for college. Guess Canada pays more than Pay-pal-Cal, but who knew? As for this past season’s banner, I hope UK puts it up using velcro, just to make it easier on themselves when it is forced to be taken down. Dang that school soled their soul.

Also, there is no way that the best pg in the nation is the 30th best player. That is ridiculous. Stupid. Amateur job SLAM, amateur.

  • Gary

Justin, #30 marcus paige isn’t better than marcus smart, rodney purvis, kris dunn or yogi. What are you talking about?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Best PG in the nation is up for debate, but my vote goes to Paige.
