SLAMonline Top 50: Josh Smith, no. 47

The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…

by Lang Whitaker

ATLANTA — As the confetti rained down on the Philips Arena floor, signifying the end of the 2012 NBA Finals and the first NBA title for the Hawks organization in over 50 years, Hawks forward Josh Smith stood at midcourt and sobbed tears of joy.

Smith, who just four years ago ranked 47th in the SLAMonline.com rankings of the NBA’s best 50 players, had not only led the Hawks to the Finals, he’d also won the Finals MVP award, a significant achievement for a player who had struggled to unearth a competitive contract offer just a few years earlier.

“That low SLAMonline ranking was really the turning point in my career,” Smith said after the game, following a raucous locker room celebration in which the Hawks celebrated by spraying Coca-Cola around their locker room instead of champagne.

“I knew I was a top ten player in this League, but at that point, when I was still just 22 years old, I was only beginning to scratch the surface of my potential.”

Since averaging 17.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg in ’07-08, only his fourth NBA season, Smith has averaged a double-double in every season, making the Eastern Conference All-Star team each year as well. And in these Finals against LeBron James and his Clippers, Smith left no doubt that he was the best player on the court.

Known mostly for his dunking ability early in his career, Smith’s long summers of working out in Houston with Calvin Murphy finally began paying off four years ago in the 2008-09 season, as Smith consistently knocked down jumpers from the wing, which forced defenders to close out on him and allowed Smith to drive more frequently for thunderous highlight reel jams.

Under new Hawks coach John Wooden, who was stunningly lured out of retirement by the bottomless pockets of Hawks owner Rupert Murdoch, Smith was also utilized more in the post than he had been under former coach Mike Woodson.

“Josh is a fine young man…” Wooden began, before drifting off to sleep amid the postgame merriment.

While Smith’s offense was impressive, his defense was equally as important to the Hawks, who often relied on Smith’s preternatural shot blocking ability to atone for defensive lapses by power forward Al Horford and center Dwight Howard, who returned home to Atlanta in the dispersal draft after the Orlando Magic were contracted for a general lack of relevance.

“Josh makes me look even better than I am,” noted Hawks point guard Ricky Rubio, who was selected second overall in the 2009 Draft after the Hawks traded up using the rights to Euroleague MVP Josh Childress. “I just throw it near the rim and he slams it home.”

As Smith was presented with the MVP trophy by NBA Commissioner Mark Cuban, it was not only a crowning moment for the Hawks franchise, but for Smith himself as well. From 47th to top 10…and hardly anyone saw it coming.

Oooooh, here we go. Let the disbelief (at his ranking) begin.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:03 am
Lang, nice bit of crystal ball writing though.

  • Staff Posted: Sep.3 at 8:03 am
Sigh….Josh Smith is barely top 100, come on Lang? Are you putting crap players in provoke comments? He has talent but this is a strech

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:06 am
WHAAAAAAAAAAAT! Smooth cannot be this far down on the list. I don’t care what people say about his jumper, he is top 30 player

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:07 am
Yep yep yep. He was around that in 06′ though wasn’t he? Liked the story. Lang fantasizes(sp?) about that day…. ;) I would had him a little bit higher ( 42-46) but this makes sense. So, Lang, who goes no.1 overall? Ater Majok?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:08 am
    Rupert Murdoch represent!

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:08 am
Josh is….. interesting Money. Inconsistent-dont let the highlight reels fool you. He can grab 15 boards 1 game and have 6 blocks then the next he’ll have 6 and 2. Never mind assists or 3 pointers.

  • Staff Posted: Sep.3 at 8:09 am
Seriously? Top 30? I did fail to mention the article has a nice angle on the whole thing, but thats the point, this is it for him, his peak is now.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:10 am
So Stern got shot or something huh? Sounds about right re. the Magic but damn the Clippers would be loaded. Thornton, LeBron, old Baron, Kaman, Old Camby. Eric Gordon…

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:11 am
ok ok, reavuluating and i may have been a bit too out there saying josh is top 30. Def top 40 though

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:12 am
damn staff your worse than kevin g or whatever yesterday. Get back inside your box of cynicism and negativity. Im out anyways. Peace. Good write up Lang.

  • mat smith Posted: Sep.3 at 8:12 am
erm, nope, hawks in 2012, me thinks the dynasty trailblazer will be on their 3rd by then, maybe….

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:14 am
camby would have to be retired by 2012

  • Jiggy Posted: Sep.3 at 8:14 am
This guy is TOP50 with his defense alone…. Hey Lang, put Rubio in the mix since you already see this guy balling in the L.

  • Staff Posted: Sep.3 at 8:15 am
Theres nothing negative about it, Im a fan of smith for his highlights and hustle, but I just dont buy him in the top 50….

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:17 am
Ok, this rank seems quite alright, considering that in the playoff tussle they had with KG & Co., Joe Smith, Bibby and the other Josh were always in the middle of things, yapping, scoring, defending, being prominent in everything Hawks. Smith? i noticed the occasional scoring expolosion and lots of dunks / blocks, but he just doesn’t strike me as being deserving of a higher ranking at this time of his career. It’s not a stats thing, i love stats, but my favorite players have to bring out the emotion in me, good or bad, and Josh (apart from the odd superdunk) never leaves a lasting impression on me. Still, top 50 he sure is, i mean his jumping ability alone would warrant this spot.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:17 am
He ( Camby) would be 38 or something. Mutumbo is 42 and will most likely re-sign with Houston for the minimum ( he wants more though). He’ll still be hanging around if he can play a bit of D and block the occasional shot. He has the ‘long length’ body which is better suited than say Shaq or Wallace ( Ben) as they get older. Just seems to hold together better and for longer…. Shaq was 2nd in MVP voting as a 33/4 yr old though with the Heat in 05? I think.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:19 am
Oh crap, i wrote Joe SMITH instead of Joe Johnson earlier. My bad.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.3 at 8:19 am
Then Green or JR should be on the list based on hops saber.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:20 am
@Hursty: no they do not. The hops part, that was sarcasm my friend.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:20 am
38 ain’t that old but with cambys long list of injurys it is doubtful

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:23 am
But JR COULD be in the top 50 soon in a season or two if he got his act together (becoming a consistent scoring option, playing D, passing the ball once in a while etc.)

  • Froggiestyle Posted: Sep.3 at 8:23 am
that low ranking is mainly due to his not-yet-ready-for-top-10 facial hair and overall look - dont worry, he’ll find a personal groomer and move up in the list

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:25 am
    Lol at Froggie’s comment. wow.

  • andrew Posted: Sep.3 at 8:27 am
I sold rupert murdoch tennis shoes about five years ago. He has to be kept alive by something that ordinary folk don’t have access to. Money?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:30 am
an asian wife 40 years younger than him?

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:35 am
Isn’t Rupert just a cover for his true persona, you know as the dark emperor of the sith? or was that the emperor of the greenbacks?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:37 am
lol at saber, but ruperts true identity is a sultana

  • DP Posted: Sep.3 at 8:38 am
Even now I think Josh should be ranked higher. Maybe in the mid 30’s but that’s just me. This dude is a quadruple doulble waiting to combust. My favorite fantasy pick and one of my favorite players when it comes to sh*tting on cats.

  • riggs Posted: Sep.3 at 8:38 am
who the hell was number 49

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:40 am
    kevin martin

  • andre anglais Posted: Sep.3 at 8:41 am
Maybe its the baby face, but I just don’t see Josh as ruthless enough to dominate the way that a top ten guy has to. Sure, he can score and block shots, but for forty minutes a night, 82 per season? 47 seems right, Sorry Josh.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:43 am
    What Andre said….

  • Benoit Benjamin Posted: Sep.3 at 8:44 am
Mark Cuban commissioner? Man that’d be just too good.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:48 am
Lang, your love for Ricky Rubio (even including him in your Nostradamus Vision post) is so strong, i can feel it from across Atlantic. Damn, man.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:48 am
what does his babyface have to do with his playing ability? larry bird looks like one of shaqs sh*ts after drinking too much milk so does that mean he is not one of the all time greats?

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 8:50 am
oooooh, Money just desecrated the basketball jesus (as Bill Simmons tends to call Bird). Blasphemy.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.3 at 8:57 am
darksaber, the last person i would desecrate is bird, i was just trying to make a point that what you look like shouldnt determine how your juded as a player

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 9:00 am
Hey, i’m with you on that. Don’t watch the NBA to comment on looks. Andre though did point out that the reason he wouldn’t place JS higher is the face, since he believes a babyface can’t dominate. But it’s cool.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 9:07 am
I so enjoyed Lang’s writeup that i’m not even going to dispute the ranking.

  • Eboy Posted: Sep.3 at 9:08 am
    ^ Agreed.

  • Bryan Posted: Sep.3 at 9:11 am
I don’t know that there are 46 players I’d rather have than Josh

  • Eboy Posted: Sep.3 at 9:11 am
    SHIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 9:31 am
    Agreed and agreed, Shia.

  • Bryan Posted: Sep.3 at 9:34 am
    What’s up guys

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 9:46 am
    Leboeuf??

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Sep.3 at 9:51 am
I agree. The sky is the limit for Josh. I’ve said it before around here; Josh will for sure be an All-Star this year.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Sep.3 at 9:53 am
Sorry, what I meant is I agree on Josh’s talent and roof. Actually I think he should have been ranked higher (late 30′ies probably) on this list imo.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.3 at 9:56 am
Uh, you know, I can’t really argue with any of this right now

  • Michael Posted: Sep.3 at 9:57 am
seems a little low..if we assume vince carter makes the list, who would you say is currently the better player between the two? and if he doesnt make the list, well i have no point

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 10:10 am
Wait, Jukai has nothing to argue?? Slam is obviously f*cking up this list then.

  • Maurice Garland Posted: Sep.3 at 10:14 am
    Drinkie drinkie?

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.3 at 10:22 am
You know TADOne, did it ever dawn on you that maybe SLAM finally got something right?

  • niQ Posted: Sep.3 at 10:33 am
NO WAY. josh smith is at LEAST top 15!.. or at least top 20… omg

  • ciolkstar Posted: Sep.3 at 10:34 am
I agree with Josh here. But its gonna be hard to start judging the list until we get down around 20 or so. IN terms of personal preference for players, I’d have him higher. But thats not what this list is about.
Jukai can only argue about players from before 1979.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 10:41 am
Oh, I just thought you argued when the sun comes up.

  • ugly_fish Posted: Sep.3 at 10:45 am
Andrei Kirelenko is not better than J-Smoove.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.3 at 10:47 am
your last sentence dictates that there was some sort of stopping point to my arguments, TADOne.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.3 at 10:57 am
Damn, they are piling up on ya Juks. where’s the fire homes?

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 10:58 am
    doggie style

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 11:00 am
    You’re right. My bad.

  • Fresh Posted: Sep.3 at 11:09 am
Josh Smith should be way higher. But might be one of the most athletic people in the NBA. Great defender, trying to get to the rim against the Hawks near impossible, contest everything. nightmare in transition can jump over almost anyone. Extended his range to the 3 point line, shoots pretty consistent from inside the arc. Also at 6′9 has a guard handle and will fill up about every stat on the stat sheet. COME ONN

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 11:15 am
i would put Josh at #43-39, but SLAM makes the decissions. If Josh developed a nice jump shot he would be top 10

  • Deuce21 Posted: Sep.3 at 11:22 am
The 2012 Atlanta Lineup. Hmm, let me see…
PG: A 22 yr old (by this stage) Well seasoned Ricky Rubio
SF: Apparent 2012 Finals MVP Josh Smith
    PF: Al Horford
    and
    C: Dwight Howard???
Who’s the 2 guard Jerry West??That’s quite a team there, no wonder they won. Nice one Lang :)

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 11:22 am
If Josh had a Jump shot that wet it constitantly, he would be top 10 in the NBA no doubt. BUT he doesnt, so maybe 43-39 would have been better for him.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Sep.3 at 11:40 am
A quick look at Josh Smiths NBA Hot Spot chart will show you that he shoots a healthy 59% from directly near the basket-and under 40% from everywhere else on the floor. His ball handling is suspect, he doesnt create that well for others and Im not sure he could ever be the number one or two guy on a championship team.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Sep.3 at 11:42 am
i disagree with disagreeing with rankings befoer we’ve seen at least positions 50 through 30…
but i loved the post lang. thanks, made me smile on a sad day.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 11:42 am
Myles, he is still young though. He does have a lot of potential, and all he needs to do is get that J wet and somebody else like the Point Guard will handle the ball and create for others. But the Hawks wont be a serious contender for maybe 3-4 years, so he still got time

  • Myles Brown Posted: Sep.3 at 11:43 am
Indeed. Im just saying why Id rank him so low right now.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.3 at 11:53 am
I thought you weren’t supposed to be commenting?

  • Myles Brown Posted: Sep.3 at 11:55 am
    Shhh…

  • ciolkstar Posted: Sep.3 at 12:19 pm
I wonder if the list is already finished and SLAM is just releasing one each day or if it’s still being compiled…?

  • Bryan Posted: Sep.3 at 12:27 pm
The ability is there though Myles his jumper has a smooth looking stroke and aside from offense which isn’t all that bad his defense can be game changing.

  • John D Posted: Sep.3 at 12:36 pm
    That was funny, Lang.

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Sep.3 at 12:50 pm
@Deuce: Two guard is Joe Johnson.

  • a_whiteman Posted: Sep.3 at 12:52 pm
despite the GLARING lack of a jumper he should have at least been top 40 but good piece on him

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Sep.3 at 1:03 pm
    Well done Lang…

  • Marcel Mutoni Posted: Sep.3 at 1:03 pm
i saw the words “nba finals” and “hawks” in the same paragraph, and my eyes began to bleed.

  • Dallas J Posted: Sep.3 at 1:22 pm
there was a time Kirelenko was going at a beastly pace kinda like Josh is now. Josh being ranked a low 47 is a clue that AK47 has dropped out the top50..they guy was 16 on the last top50. maybe too high..but still..I’d be shocked if he’s in it because at this point Smith is def. better

  • what Posted: Sep.3 at 1:34 pm
I might stop being a Hawks fan if Rupert Murdoch became the owner, just out of principle

  • what Posted: Sep.3 at 1:40 pm
I don’t see what’s so wrong about ranking Josh at 47 either… he is a top 20 fantasy player whose actual impact isn’t as good as his fantasy impact, so somewhere between 40 and 50 sounds right

  • Deuce21 Posted: Sep.3 at 2:06 pm
That’s true Lang but with the other talent and the picks needed to get that roster together I assumed they’d have to trade JJ.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Sep.3 at 2:17 pm
I heartily agree with this ranking. That is all.

  • Brian Posted: Sep.3 at 2:30 pm
Great line about coach Wooden drifting off to sleep during the celebration……..

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 3:06 pm
does this mean that Gerald or Jason wont be on the list? And will Teddy the Bear get at me, or is he too busy on his honeymoon with James?

  • DP Posted: Sep.3 at 3:22 pm
Yeah Gerald might not be on the list, BET. He shouldn’t be rated higher than J-smoove and Jason should crack the top 40.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 3:23 pm
i agree. i heart gerald wallace (no homo) but no way i could honestly take Wallace over him

  • DP Posted: Sep.3 at 4:13 pm
I think G-force is going to snap this season though. 19 and 8 wouldn’t be unrealistic.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 4:26 pm
yeah i agree. Wallace is all about hustle, and Larry Brown is too. Thats a match made in heaven.

  • scott Posted: Sep.3 at 5:12 pm
Josh Smith should be top ten (if this was ranked on fantasy value). Guess AK47 isn’t going to be on this list considering they are basically the same players only Smith does everything better.

  • scott Posted: Sep.3 at 5:14 pm
Does Atlanta make the playoffs this year? I say no the East is getting deeper and Atlanta isn’t one of the top eight teams.

  • j-smoov 5 Posted: Sep.3 at 5:20 pm
@ Staff: Josh Smith? come on he is EASILY in the top 50. Once his jumper’s consistent he’ll be unstoppable! and he has the TRUE all around ability unlike the others. except camby.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.3 at 5:33 pm
and this comes from somebody with the nickname j-smoov. I wonder who his favorite player is. But he is correct, when that J comes Josh will be top 10 in NBA

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.3 at 8:00 pm
I can def. see Josh becoming a top 10 player but the Mark Cuban Commish line blew my mind.

  • DP Posted: Sep.3 at 8:13 pm
Josh was actually starting to drop bombs from deep at a fairly(and I mean fairly in the SMALLEST WAY)consistent rate during the second half of the season. Yes, we all see that he has top ten potential but I believe he will have an MVP before it’s all said and done. His MVP year will be an all-star stat line of 25 ppg, 6 ast, 9 reb, 3 stls, 3 blocks, and 368 dunks. play wit it.

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.3 at 8:16 pm
Josh could be the Dominique to LeBrons MJ.

  • David Posted: Sep.3 at 9:09 pm
Cuban would be a great commish for the modern game, as long as he didn’t make a barrier to players representing their national squads. And I bet he’d create a better way to broadcast games on the net. Murdoch buying the Hawks is funny. Lang, you’d have to admit that the compromise would be Page 3 girls as cheerleaders, the team would be forever knowns as “Fox presents… the Hawks”, and he’d somehow find a way to get advertising space okay’d on the court, ball, and uniforms. Oh - and right-wing beat writers and commenters. You’d probably have to disassociate yourself from Ryan Jones.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.3 at 9:13 pm
So far I have no complaints with the list. Props.

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.3 at 9:14 pm
Cuban is one of the best and worst owners at the same time.

  • RV Posted: Sep.3 at 9:51 pm
anyone at SLAM still around? I’ve got a link to Artest’s new ‘do.

  • chintao Posted: Sep.3 at 10:54 pm
This ranking seems like Lang is just playing favorites (which is his prerogative — hell, I do it all the time). In 2012, Smith might be Top 50 material. Right now? Well, I don’t feel entirely qualified to judge, but my gut is telling me, “not quite”.

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.4 at 2:22 am
Could buy all of it just about…except LeBron would never go to a Western Conf. team…. …and Rubio wont come to the NBA. He’s pure Euro.

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.4 at 2:25 am
Heres my mathematical theory. 30 teams. Pick the two best players on each team…thats 60. Some teams would have a third player ie Lakers, Suns, Boston etc..and others would not ie Memphis, Charlotte, Kings, T Wolves. At best you could round UP and take top 3 players from everyteam… go for top 100… …Have you picked any NON ALL STARS within the top 25. Are there any current ALL STARS OUTSIDE the top 25…??
Curious just to see your list anyways….

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.4 at 2:33 am
    1.LeBron
    2.Garnett
    3.K.Bryant
    4.T.Duncan
    5.Dwayne Wade
    6.Chris Paul
    7.Amare Stoudermire
    8.Allen Iverson

This is harder than I thought.

  • Michael Posted: Sep.4 at 5:13 am
dacre, which member of the grizzlies is currently top 50?

  • mitch Posted: Sep.4 at 5:27 am
good to see him somewhere. But I would have put him at about 50 or 51.

  • i am the walrus Posted: Sep.4 at 5:43 am
Joshsmith is the best playa in the league(in 2012)

  • Fresh Posted: Sep.4 at 9:57 am
    Top Players not all stars:
    Just Some names
    Tony Parker
    Manu Ginobili
    Deron Williams
    Stephen Jackson (maybe)
    Baron Davis
    Jamal Crawford
    Gilbert Areanas (injury)
    Micheal Redd (maybe)
    Elton Brand (injury)
    Caron Butler (injury)

  • Sparker Posted: Sep.4 at 10:03 am
hilarious, lang. but although josh has huge potential, when you compare him to high flyers like vince or t-mac (or even david thompson), you realize how sketchy his offensive game is. bigger dangers are his ego, which is reportedly large already; and his apparent lack of on-court smarts, which ya can’t teach. a couple of frustrating seasons with atlanta or a bad trade and he could be a marginal player in a hurry

  • Fresh Posted: Sep.4 at 10:14 am
    quick stat
Possible MVP and Defensive Player of the Year: Kevin Garnett 18.8 points 9.2 rebounds 3.4 assist 1.4 steals 1.2 blocks no . 46 Josh Smith 17.2 ppg 8.2 rpg 3.4 apg 1.4 spg 2.8 bpg I wonder where they are going to rank KG not that he is not deserving of it fully but still josh smith 47. the stats are not that far off

  • kevin Posted: Sep.5 at 12:51 pm
HAHA funny story, i’d love to read it in 2012!!!

  • Ross Posted: Sep.7 at 3:35 am
If Josh Smith had the knowledge of the game of Tayshaun Prince, he’d be top 10 .. but that’s the difference between a college and HighSchool senior.

  • marc Posted: Sep.17 at 5:02 pm
    Great piece of writting. Hilarious!
