Celebrate the US Olympic Team Monday in NYC!

Nike and USA Basketball are inviting the public to check out the new team today!

SLAM will be in the building, and we will have MUCH more to say about this team soon. In the meantime, we wanted to pass this announcement on to any Slamonline readers in New York who might want to check the event out in person.

Here are the details…

WHAT: On Monday, June 30, the United States’ top basketball players, including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade, will assemble in New York City to take part in an unprecedented fan celebration and unveiling of the Men’s Basketball Team that will compete for Team USA at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Led by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Team USA will gather at Rockefeller Center’s famed ice rink for a team introduction that will feature all 12 members of the squad that will represent the United States this summer. The event will be hosted by TV personality Kevin Frazier.

During the event, Nike will also unveil USA Basketball’s new Swift System of Dress basketball uniform. The new Nike designed uniform eliminates 24 centimeters of material and reduces the weight by 31 percent. The uniform also features Nike Aerographics, an engineered mesh providing zoned cooling that reduces up to half the yarn, making it more lightweight and breathable. An exclusively designed “We the People” graphic, inspired by USA’s rich history, is also integrated into the uniform.

In addition to Team USA’s uniform design, Nike will showcase the USA Nike Hyperdunk colorway. The Nike Hyperdunk is 18 percent lighter than the average Nike basketball shoe and is the lightest and strongest basketball shoe Nike has ever created. Key products inspired by the USA Basketball uniform and Hyperdunk footwear featuring Flywire technology will be available to consumers beginning July 26th.

WHEN: Monday, June 30, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Rockefeller Center Ice Rink, 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Yeah, we knew something like this was happening for a long time, but the organizers were a little slow with the details. It can’t be easy to coordinate the schedules of some of the most famous players and coaches in the world.

The U.S. uniforms are going to be like the new swimsuits in giving them an advantage over the competition.

    Ben, Lang et al:
I haven’t see much out there on the other olympic teams this year, how about an article on the competition and how its going to shape up? US fans go into most of these games with no idea of who were playing or what they’ve accomplished….it’d be interesting to get some background.

    Go for the bronze!

LBJ takes a subtle shot at Larry Brown in the USA basketball quotes: LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers
Can you talk about what happened in 2004?
What happened in 2004 wasn’t the best for myself, Dwyane and Carmelo. It was a bad situation, we didn’t play as much as we thought we should have and it left a bad taste in our mouths. We wanted the opportunity to get better and make an impact on the USA team and now we’re going to be able to do that.

  • Eboy Posted: Jun.30 at 1:57 pm
    Nice.

  • Saku 39 Posted: Jun.30 at 2:16 pm
Funny you mention swimsuits because that’s what I thought of when I saw the jerseys. I stopped by for a bit and J. Kidd looked like he was wearing one of those old time, 1920s swimsuits. Oh and I would say Lebron got the biggest pop from the crowd by far.

  • Rasheedionics Posted: Jun.30 at 2:25 pm
Just got back from the even myself. Yea, Lebron almost got mobbed by those kids, but he’s only one who even attempted to give kids the high fives.Dwight Howard showed one of his incredible dance moves. Him and Lebron are the only 2 players who looked like they were having fun. Assistant Coach Mike D’Antoni should enjoy this experience because come October, he won’t have nearly as much fun.

  • Chou Posted: Jun.30 at 2:31 pm
Are they gonna sell those Hyperdunks to them euros?

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Jun.30 at 4:10 pm
only thing i’m curious about: did anyone yell out “kobe how does my ass taste?”
and i can’t believe dwight was busting moves. didn’t he bust his sternum already?
